THEODORE J. MOON ♠ Boston, Massachusetts ♠ #8A2BE2
――――――――――――――――――――――――――

Early mornings were relatively quiet for Theo. The only sounds let into his spacious loft were the droplets of rain that began to pour down from the gathering clouds. Casts of gray slowly canopied the sky while the dynasty’s prince worked through his usual routine. By half past seven, Theo was nestled into the armchair or his home office, his attention focused solely on the amassed schoolwork in front of him. It had been his own choice to tackle university and the dynasty all at once, but more so lately, he found himself regretting his decision. Caesar had made it clear countless times that if all those responsibilities came to be too much, Theo was to alert him immediately and temporarily hand over any dynasty related affairs. Though Theo had agreed, he’d never actually made use of the deal.

Even now, as he swayed in his chair, determining which mountain of work to scale first, asking his father for help didn’t quite feel right. Eventually, he’d settled on conquering the hardest assignments first. Luckily for Theo, he’d always been a quick study. Understanding concepts and committing them to memory had never been an obstacle for him. Truthfully, it felt as if time was the only element not on his side. It was when he was elbows deep into his second assignment that his cell chimed from across the desk. His head perked up, almost startled by the sudden noise that tore through the silence. He’d been so hyperfocused on his studies, he hadn’t even realized how heavy the rainfall had gotten.

Jake’s name flashed in blue across his screen, and Theo didn’t hesitate to answer. He hadn't had the chance to talk to his friend since their impromptu chat within the base parking lot. As he answered he silently hoped the situation hadn’t gotten any worse. Theo didn’t want to intervene unless necessary, but he also knew Jake’s fears and Salvi’s stubborn nature. ”Alright?” Jake’s footsteps could be heard on the other end of the line, as if he’d been readying himself to go out.

”Mornin’ boss.” the reply was lackluster. The usual beatitude that greeted Theo most mornings was missing, a dejected spirit taking its place. It felt unnatural to hear said tone paired with Jake’s voice, but Theo wasn't given the chance to probe. The other man made it clear that he wasn’t calling to vent to his best friend, he was reaching out on official dynasty business. Much to Theo’s relief, Jake assured him the news was good. The minor details weren’t explained, as was customary to do when discussing business over phone calls. Jake simply made it clear that Victor had something, and it was something good. Perhaps the last piece of the puzzle they needed to have Mayor St. Claire wrapped in their ropes. It wasn’t until Jake mentioned the meeting request that another man’s voice was heard in the background. Salvi’s voice to be exact. Only then did the former’s down-casted tone begin to make sense. Theo shoved aside the subject, once again setting it on the backburner in exchange for business.

Ideally, Theo would’ve finished his school work first. But focussing on school work would be an impossible task. Knowing they could have St. Claire on the palm of their hands overshadowed all other thoughts that populated Theo’s head. He’d agreed to meet with Victor at the base within thirty minutes, making it clear that Jake and Salvi were to stay as well. On top of being his closest friends, they were also Theo’s right hand men. They needed to know exactly what was going on. After ending the call, it didn’t take long for Theo to be on his way. The ponderous storm had subsided almost completely, having left behind only a feathery drizzle.

The sound of puddles swishing underneath the car tires echoed throughout the empty lot as Theo’s vehicle came to a stop. Only a handful of men could typically be found at the base so early in the day, Theo included among them. A cold breeze brushed over him as the door to his office opened. The room always felt too cold and eerie in the morning. Not that it remained that way for long. Shortly after Theo’s arrival, the trio walked in. The once quiet space was now engulfed in an impalpable tension. Theo observed in silence as the three shuffled in, Salvi and Jake taking their usual watchmen posture by the door. Theo’s dark eyes only briefly looked them over before directing his attention towards Victor.

”Well?” Theo too, settling into his most comfortable posture. Resting at the edge of his desk, legs outstretched and overlapping in front of him, arms carefully folded across his chest, as he watched and waited for Victor’s tidings. ”Better be bloody brilliant, Russo.” though significantly less threatening than the first time the two had met, Theo’s tone still commanded the room. Whatever Victor claimed to have, had better be good enough to justify Theo setting aside his degree and his friends’ needs.
