Socio-Political Landscape

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby KumoriRyuu on Mon Jan 11, 2021 1:56 pm

I wrote a lot about the five nations and their lore/culture. But this page is dedicated to more detailed information about how each nation relates to the next.

Obviously Veilbrand has been excluded because you all have heard enough about how it's doing.

Cre' Est

In Cre' Est, life's peachy for the majority of the citizenry. The economy is thriving, so fear of unemployment or significant tax changes (in either direction) are very low. With a large and powerful military the fear of invasion is also incredibly low.

Where the Social issues lie in Cre' Est is with the current mindset and decision making process of the government beneath the King and Queen.

Due to the nation having a Constitutional Monarchy, the King and Queen are bound by the Constitution's tenets which, unfortunately, are seen as "flexible" by the Senate who preside beneath them. And because the Senate can, by majority vote, veto anything the King and Queen try to do, it's not hard to see how obstruction and corruption can and are spreading. What's worse is that the Senate is funded by a percentage of the taxes meaning the people are paying their wages. This is causing a rift between the people and the Senate due to how poor their decision making has been in recent years.

To provide some examples:

* Last year (year 573) the King and Queen were requested to pass final judgement on a "treason" case due to the Senate obstructing the court ruling for public execution due to the severity of the offense. The King and Queen ordered the court's ruling to be carried out, and the Senate vetoed the ruling and voted amongst themselves 18-2 to overturn the execution entirely. The offending party's identity was kept secret from the public as well because they felt revealing the individual's identity would "compromise the individual's future and chance to repent." This was seen almost universally as a defiance of the Constitution's 1st tenet demanding no Cre' Itian citizen be judged by any other measure than the law. The Senate's feelings on an individual's future and chance for penance is not the law. And it drew more than a few critical responses from the general public.

* 4 years ago (year 570) the Senate put together a measure to increase the tax on the lowest earning families claiming the measure was to improve the overall stability of the economy at large. The King and Queen denied this measure, but a 13-7 vote vetoed their dismissal and the measure was passed. And as you can imagine, the lowest earning families, as well as many others within the bulk of the commonwealth, spoke loudly against this measure and even took to riots and stormed the Senate building. The Senate members were not in session, so nobody was harmed. But this was enough for the Senate to revoke the measure some two months later. But even though the measure was revoked and the tax returned to what it was previously, the fact they went this route at all spoke volumes to the people that the Senate's eye on financial gains has become more than a little selfish.

* 7 years ago (year 567) the Senate also refused to pass along a requested policy change regarding Trade with Shaharan. The people voted on a request to divert 1%, as opposed to 0.5%, of their taxes towards providing further financial assistance to traders which would go a long way to helping them pay for better protection on the road as the increase in bandit and Rogue activity in the last decade or so has put a strain on the security of the two mountain passages that Cre' Est uses to trade with the Eastern Hemisphere. The Senate denied this request in an 11-9 vote, with the reasoning being "funding for trade is considered adequate by our top economists." That was it. Nothing about the safety of the traders or the security of the mountain passages. Just "it's adequate."

Due to the now growing divide between the people and the Senate, there have been calls to hold a vote to replace currently active Senate members. But these calls have been completely ignored by the upper nobility who control the Senate and who goes into it. The last time a new Senate member was elected was 14 years ago. And the people are getting sick of the same people causing more and more problems as time goes on.

War-Treaty

Cre' Est currently has active Treaties with Triveila, Shaharan, and Gweynura.

However, though there is a treaty on paper Veilbrand has openly violated it by engaging in skirmishes along the border. When questioned about this by emissaries from Cre' Est, Egruus To' Veilbrand claimed that it was nothing more than "cases of mistaken identity," and that his soldiers had been getting their uniforms and equipment stolen by bandits and Rogue Guilds who were out to make him look bad. The Royal Family in Cre' Est has voiced open skepticism about his explanation, but Egruus countered their skepticism by welcoming them the chance to attack Veilbrand in retribution for these offenses.

Cre' Est has thus far remained neutral and has not crossed the border into Veilbrand territory, as doing so would further violate the Treaty which exists between their nations. Any open violation would be considered and act of war, and Cre' Est has no interest in war despite Egruus' provocation.

Triveila

Currently, Triveila is looking more and more like there's going to be a transition of power. The King, Orphon Xa' Triveila, is incredibly ill and the doctors don't know what's wrong. His chances of living are dwindling, and the Queen cannot rule on her own as Triveila has always held the belief that the Royal family must rule. But due to tragic circumstances the only heir to the throne by blood died over 10 years ago leaving the King and Queen as the last of their own bloodline.

However...

Ever since that death in the family 10 years ago, there have been numerous aggressive attempts by upper nobility to force the King and Queen to step down prematurely and appoint a new ruling family from among their ranks. The King and Queen must pick their successors, and thus far with the King incapacitated and the Queen doing her best to handle the nation's issues on her own, the nobility is clamoring that the time is now for a change in rulership.

This aggressiveness for a change has not gone unnoticed by the commonwealth who have been critical of the nobility. As a result of this criticism, the nobility have begun banning together to form unofficial "committees" to decide who the next ruling family should be when the King passes.

The Queen, however, has her eyes on a specific candidate family and is in communications with them about the possibility should her husband indeed pass in the near future. She has refused to identify the candidate or their family despite protests from the nobility and the few in the commonwealth who support them.

Currently, the prime candidate from the nobility, according to the committees, is Herold Miils and his wife Theresa Miils. Both were born of wealthy families as it was, and their union only served to make both families even more influential. But influence and popularity are two different things. And the Miils family is currently despised by more than 60% of the general population for their sketchy business practices controlling the largest import/export company in the nation dealing with incoming goods from across the seas. Their family and associates alike have been earning money at alarming rates, and none of it seems to come from the actual income of the business itself. So where's the money coming from...?

These mysterious dealings by some of the upper nobility like the Miils family and the aggression of the nobility for a change of the hat in rulership has the general populace on edge. And although it's nowhere near civil war or any kind of major uprising, tensions do run high in several larger cities. Particularly in the capital city of Auxeras.

War-Treaty

Triveila currently has peace Treaties with all four other nations. But, similarly to Cre' Est, Veilbrand has been testing the limits of Triveila's patience. Several trade ships traveling along the coastline have been raided by "bandits" and Rogues, the same as how Egruus claims they're doing in the skirmishes on the Cre' Itian border. Triveila doesn't believe it for a second despite Veilbrand's current state, as the people of Veilbrand, despite living lives of survival first and morality second in many cases, have never in history openly attacked or tried to interfere with the other nations and their activities like trade. The people of Veilbrand know better, as it would only hurt them even more if war broke out between Veilbrand and another nation on top of the Revolution's presence and impact.

Shaharan

In Shaharan, life is as it should be for nearly all Clans.

Clans keep to themselves. When they step over the line, Clans will clash and those disputes are to be settled by the Clans themselves either through diplomacy or combat between their best warriors.

At present the only thing in Shaharan that would suggest any kind of sociopolitical unrest is the fact that the nation is also feeling the effects of the lack of security in the Mountain Passages between them and Cre' Est which is affecting trade. Numerous Clans, especially those who live closer to the Central Mountain Range, have been greatly affected by this lack of security and consistency in the delivery of goods as well as messages being lost due to couriers being attacked and robbed of their bags.

War-Treaty

Because it lacks a centralized government, it's "understood" that Shaharan as a nation is currently at peace with the four other nations.

However...

Shaharan has a strong relationship with Cre' Est due to their frequent trades and cultural exchanges through the arts like song and dance. It's understood by Triveila, Gweynura, and Veilbrand all that if Cre' Est were ever to call for aid in a time of war, Shaharan would be the first to answer. And with great force.

Gweynura

Gweynura's absolute monarchy is, thankfully, more stable than that in Triveila. Both rulers are healthy and have strong relationships with the most prominent noble families who in turn have strong relationships with the commonwealth.

Everyone works together as part of a larger, harmonized unit for the betterment of the nation as a whole. And although the economy isn't as booming as that of Cre' Est, it's not far behind. The stability of the peaceful and harmonized nature of the commonwealth, nobility, and rulership help make Gweynura one of the most emotionally and mentally healthy places to live.

War-Treaty

Triveila is currently experiencing a lot of tension with Veilbrand who controls the singular Mountain Pass that serves the ground-based trade between them. Veilbrand has created a massive stone gate on the far side, and none may pass without a permit or proof of business such as a trader's license. No license or proof of business in the nation? Then turn around or die.

Despite everyone's best efforts to adjust to this development, it has strained Gweynura's relationship with Veilbrand, and the treaty which exists between them is dangerously close to breaking...
