Her mother is a servant at the Curzon household, mostly working with the laundry and cleaning. Emily was schooled with the children of the family in reading, writing, and basic arithmetic. The tutor, however, refused to continue schooling the children if Emily was not included in the upper level maths, on a hunch. The other children had taken a liking to her, and wanted her to continue; Mrs. Curzon chose to indulge them.

Well, Emily proved her worth, and Mrs. Curzon allowed her to apply to some colleges. Nothing large, nothing too expensive, and only if she could keep up a scholarship. She even gave Emily a new name to apply by: Jessica Rowen Elizabeth Curzon.
