On the History of the Galaxy (Incomplete)

Tips: 1.50 INK Postby StrategosXII on Wed Jun 12, 2019 2:02 pm

This brief historical overview of the state of the galaxy covers events from the middle of the 21st Century and ends before the Arkadi invasion of the Principate. This is going to be a long post, so hold on.

Spoiler: show
The Regal Age began between the early 2040s and the 2060s. The Yazhou Emperor rose in this time period, first as the Chairman of China. He was a former military commander who fought for a backwater Asian nation with China during the Third World War in the 2030s. Surprisingly for many, the war ended after a period of time longer than anticipated, and with little loss of life as compared to what was estimated. Tremendous effort was put on mobile warfare to get the other side and its allies to capitulate before it became necessary to use nuclear bombs. Throughout the course of the Eight Year War, as it is colloquially called, many commanders and heads of state were close to pushing the button, yet the prospect of ending humanity was out of the question. In an agreement between the East and West, the two belligerents in the war, nuclear warheads were banned, though tactical nuclear artillery was permitted. The UN mediated over these talks, and promised a full-scale mobilisation against the nation which breaks this law. In a matter of eight years, the war ended in a pyrrhic Western victory. Though it was not the billions estimated by nuclear war theorists, the casualty count was half a billion, with majority of victims being citizens. The war's consequences lead to famine and disease, leading to an indirect death toll of a billion. In fact, it was not the direct invasion of Russia and China that triggered their capitulation, but the sheer loss of manpower and the loss of the will to fight. Despite being a very modern and supposedly mobile war, from the historian's perspective, it was a war of attrition.

The man who would become the Yazhou Emperor was not native Chinese. In fact, he came from a Southeast Asian nation that supported China with volunteer forces. The muddled historical records of this time have caused his real name, ethnicity, and nationality to be wiped from the records. One of the few details left was that he was a devout Catholic, and this is seen in his later actions in the Christianisation of China. The Yazhou Emperor saw the stagnation caused by Western democracy at this time. By the will of the people, he rose to power and restructured the government into a monarchic state. It had an elected parliament, though it was limited in power and size. The real power rested with the Council of Electors, who would elect the next leader from the New Nobility that governed the localities, who were in turn, chosen from specific bloodlines based on their capabilities. Being part Chinese, he initiated a conquest of China and Asia as a whole, and adopted Chinese culture as he moved his capital to Beijing and renamed it Peking. With his reforms, the nation flourished once more. Many nations were inspired to abandon their democracies in favour of a solution that would guarantee their safety and allow them to flourish as well as China. European countries chose leaders from the deposed imperial and royal families, most popularly, the Bourbons of France, the Habsburgs of Austria and Hungary, the Hohenzollerns of Germany, and a distant line of Romanovs of Russia.

This radical change of governance in many nations caused the fall and replacement of the United Nations. Though many progressive groups saw this as a backwards step for humanity, there were many advances that were made by the kingdoms of Earth. Eventually, the monarchies of Earth created a new substitute for the United Nations. It took many years before the East and West could ever mend their relations, but it wasn't impossible. The monarchs blamed the previous rulers, who were corrupt and power-hungry. Hesitantly, mankind united, even if only temporarily, for their greater good. The Dominions of Man became the international governing structure, ruled by the Supreme Emperor. The first Supreme Emperor was the aged Yazhou Emperor's capable grandson, who was elected to the position by a body of princes, the princes being high nobles from the nations they represent. Perhaps the greatest achievement of the Dominions was the successful colonisation of the moon, which began in December of 2071. By the 25th of December, the first colonists stepped foot on the moon after more than several decades after the first attempts failed, and conquered it in the name of the Dominions. It was advertised as a birthday gift for all of humanity.

The Dominions, under request from the old Yazhou Emperor, formed a council on 2073 on the prospects of colonising Mars. By 2074, it was put to vote. Ninety percent of the entire council voted for colonisation. By January of 2076, the first terraforming and colonisation vessels were launched, courtesy of the Yazhou Emperor. The vessels arrived on November of 2076. By 2077, half of Mars had been terraformed into a habitable land full of vegetation. The first colonisers landed here and built their first settlement: the village known as Yazhou, named after the Yazhou Emperor, and Anglicised into Iashov. This would eventually become the City of Iashov, the capital of Mars. In late 2081, the Yazhou Emperor died, and was succeeded by his trusted and capable grandson, whom he elected and groomed, while his sons remained unconcerned with politics. It was during the reign of the Peking Emperor, successor to the Yazhou Emperor, that a primitive version of warping was invented. It could send ships on FTL travel through a teleportation system, though the first few tests were failures. By 2100, it was perfected, though it did not use the same teleportation system, and instead opted for wormhole-like corridors. Depending on the vessel and the distance, it could take mere hours to months to get from point A to B.

There were many small conflicts that erupted between 2100 and 2200, caused mostly unresolved tensions due to the Eight Year War. These wars, fought with, at most, 500,000 soldiers, had major effects on the state of the world, but the battles were smaller in size when compared to those of the 20th and 21st Centuries. This caused the abolition of China, and the birth of the Pan-Asian Empire. However, a major war once again occurred that would change the course of Dominions history. The Fourth World War, as it is called, became the first war in which spacefaring vessels had a major impact on strategy. The war was sparked by the bombing of the Buckingham Palace in the year 2206. Nobody knew who the culprit was at first. Then, the Eiffel Tower was damaged in a blast. It was later discovered that the culprits were Iranian soldiers sent by the Neo Persian Empire. Still bearing the previous generations' anger, England and France declared war on Persia. Yet, Persia was defended by the Chinese, and the Chinese in turn was in a military pact with Russia. The entirety of the West, minus the American Continent, rallied against the East once more, but this time, there was a definite winner. Even Eastern European nations, including Habsburg Austria, rallied against the West. Pan-Asia gathered all of its assets, including the ones from outer space, and began the destruction of the West.

When the West was defeated, its government migrated to its planetary colonies and attempted to resist. The citizens of those planets did try to resist, but lost heart when Pan-Asia formed the first spacefaring navy of a hundred ships. The resistance capitulated immediately. From then on, the prospects of a space navy became realised, and this came to fruition years later when the Dominions was locked in war against a massive pirate fleet, which would later be defeated by Don Carlo el Gran. In a matter of years, the Dominions of Man became further unified. By 2250, Terra became a sacred land as the capital of mankind was placed on Planet Zeus. Terra's resources were mostly exhausted, and the lands and seas were polluted. They cleansed it to the best of their ability. The monuments to the nations became pieces of history as cities were levelled and rebuilt. From then on, it became illegal for any army to set foot on Terra. Many planets were also lost when the war began as communications failed. Left alone, these planets developed on their own. This includes the future planet of Dzhalus, and would later become Lavrentia.

By 2400, the Dominions stagnated due to centuries of peace. The old nations began to crumble, turning into distant memories with nobody to resurrect them. The planets instead began to develop their own culture. Mars, for example, began to develop a warrior culture as more and more nations began to draw mercenaries from them. Terra became a holy land of the pious. Zeus developed a high culture of debauchery. Arkad, however, adopted a culture of revolution and democracy after the failure of its previous incompetent administrations, though Arkad was later brought back into the Dominions through conquest.

Spoiler: show
By 2600, the Dominions had grown incompetent and unfit to rule as its nobles lost the vision of their founder. Only a few nobles remained competent enough, but even 'few' is an overstatement. In 2608, the Martian Revolution began. The first democratic institution since the failed Arkadi Republic sprung into existence due to high tax rates for the benefit of the corrupt Martian nobility. The first Martians created the philosophy of planetary nationalism, which states that the old nations had grown too similar. Culture should instead dictate what a nation is, and at this point, each planet had developed its own culture. Hence, each planet should in its own right be a nation. This, combined with the republican philosophers of Arkad and Mars, were the bases for the revolution, which began on January 8 with the imprisonment of the nobles by the Martian Army. Many of them were executed, including the Governor of Mars, who himself was capable and noble in vision but was ultimately restricted by the other nobles, and his family. Some, however, were spared as bargaining chips. Yet, the Republican Revolt was, in a way, a failure. The allure of power corrupted the government, for the politicians were untrained to resist corruption, no matter how well-meaning they were before. They temporarily abandoned their Martian traditions, and instead adopted the lives of the nobles, living free from worry. Yet, the coming Dominion forces would definitely not permit them to exist any longer. So, they once again adopted their warrior tradition, despite some progressive cells in the nation thinking of this as a backwards move.

Their most capable commander, Medi Ari, was a foreigner from Terra, who admired the martial culture of the Martians. He sought to instead preserve this culture from the harm of stagnation, the same stagnation that caused the fall of the Dominions. Medi Ari quickly ascended the ranks through both navy and army. This is a difficult task in any military at the time, yet Medi Ari did it with ease due to the lack of other capable commanders. Despite spending a better part of his childhood in Terra, Medi Ari spent it wisely by reading in the monolithic libraries constructed after the depolluting effort in 2250. He was allured by history and stories of heroes and strategists, most especially his personal hero, Napoleon Bonaparte. His family moved to the Martian Republic when he was a teenager, where he joined the Military Academy at the age of 16 on 2627 due to their lack of funds.

Spoiler: show
Despite being outnumbered, Medi Ari defeated the invading Dominions Fleet. Confident in his ability, he pushed further beyond the Solar System, and conquered fifteen of the eighty planets occupied by mankind. He administered them perfectly, and his confidence in himself grew into ambition to destroy the Dominions and establish for the entire galaxy a new order. The planets he conquered were, officially, loyal to the Martian Republic, but everyone knew they were loyal to him. Terrified, the Republic attempted to destroy their only capable military commander. At that point, the Republic reluctantly joined forces with the Dominion to destroy Medi Ari, but this was short-lived, as only mere months later, before the Dominions could organise a new invasion fleet, the Republic was overthrown by both Medi Ari and his supporters on Mars. Seeing that the Republican experiment had failed once again, the Martians wished to turn to an effective method of governance. They trusted Medi Ari, as they saw his skill in managing his newly conquered territories. Hence, he was turned into the sole ruler of Mars, and by virtue of the Terrans, was crowned Emperor on November 28, 2637. He resurrected and fixed some clauses of the Napoleonic Civil Code and the long forgotten Dominions Civil Code, and turned them into law. Some of the capable nobles of the Dominions knew that Medi Ari was the new Yazhou Emperor, only this time, he came not with scrolls and documents, but with fire and the sword. Many flocked to his side, but some capable nobles chose to serve the Dominions until their death.

Medi Ari renamed himself Medinius Aurelius before his conquest of the Dominions. It was an easy campaign, for it was difficult to find an opponent that could match his skill. With the martial prowess of the Martians, he easily steamrolled every planet, and with every promise, he gained the respect of the vanquished. The final battle of the war proved to be the most costly and the most devastating to the Dominions. Over 40,000 ships were deployed by either side. The Battle of 100,000 was an over-exaggerated name, but it came close. It was a devastating defeat for the surrounded Dominions Fleet, with 90% of their ships being destroyed, and the remaining ships being captured, or having fled, the Dominions capitulated on 2645, and the remaining nobles were stripped from power, while the nobles that joined Medinius became the rulers of the galaxy. Medinius turned Zeus into his capital, and renamed Medinia. On 2672, Medinius Aurelius died quelling a massive rebellion of nobles and republicans. His generals, being former nobles who were all preferred by Medinius in his life, grabbed power for themselves. The galaxy was divided into five empires: the New Persians, Agrantine, Barkus, Arkadi, and Medinians, of whom the Medinians, Arkadi, and Barkus were the strongest. During this time, there was peace and scientific advancement. Better weaponry, better warp engines, and better ships for the navy; and better infrastructure, better healthcare, and better administration for society as a whole. It was in 2674 that Emperor Dzhalus of Medinia, the son of Medinius' cousin, rediscovered several planets forgotten by the Dominions and integrated them into Medinia. With this discovery, a grab for lost human territories was initiated. One of Dzhalus' favourite planets was named after him, though this Planet Dzhalus would later become a backwater after the fall of the Imperial Age. They also scrambled for new planets which they could settle and extract resources from. In fact, the rush made it so that some colonies didn't even have settlements, only mines.

However, the Five Empires came to an abrupt and bloody end, starting on the year 2806. The many successors fought a bloody war against one another for domination. It began due to the many years of tension since the start of the reconquest age, as well as the scramble for more colonies on uninhabited worlds to extend their power. The ensuing war caused the abandonment of these uninhabited colonies. It began when a task force from Medinia was surrounded by three Arkadi warships, now known to have sided with the secret Republican faction within the Arkad Empire. The task force was destroyed after they refused to give all their supplies to the Arkadi.

Medinia declared war on Arkad a month later. The New Dominions joined the war on Arkad's side. Barkus, being the largest of them all, started off independent and trying to swallow the other empires whole, while Agrantine, the smallest empire, attempted to stay out of it. It was forced to take up arms when Barkus intimidated them into allying with them. The war was costly for all sides. Medinius codified his art of war, but it seemed as if nobody interpreted it correctly. The empires fought and pushed themselves to the limit. Barkus swallowed up Agrantine near the end of the war, and the New Dominions attempted to betray Arkad and go against everyone at once. It was swiftly defeated by Medinia. However, Medinia itself was defeated by Barkus and Arkad's sheer numbers. Despite Medinia's defeat, Barkus and Arkad lost millions of soldiers as Medinia drew its last dying breaths. At the end of the war, twelve years later, two billion people, again mostly citizens, were dead, and all the great empires had fallen. Many planets seceded, and once rich ones were forced into poverty. Medinia, Agrantine, and the New Dominions lost all their holdings. Medinia was reduced to a single planet. The New Dominions was destroyed. Agrantine became a Barkus puppet.

Barkus, despite being massive and victorious, had expended the most amount of manpower. A hundred million soldiers died by the end of the war on Barkus' side. The factories and farms were left unused, and the government was utterly paralysed. Arkad profited more, but by the end of it all, Arkad had transformed into a republic after the Republican faction, riding the current of the times, took over through another bloody civil war that lasted a mere three months. Barkus did not have the luxury of having a short civil war. Instead, it was long. The Barkus Emperor at the time abdicated and fled as he surrendered his government to the Barkus Republic. Yet, the troublemaker, Gregor Alkav, a well-known intellectual with egalitarian leanings, managed to stir the angry population. The communards rose up in rebellion. At first, nobody thought that they would win, yet as the civil war dragged on throughout the years, many planets declared secession from Barkus, and those that remained had entire populations that began supporting the communards. The Imperial Age truly ended with the death of the last Arkadi Emperor, and the murder of the already-abdicated Barkus Emperor. By the end of the Imperial Age, there were dozens of new nations, and two superpowers.

Spoiler: show
The war had taken a toll on mankind. Nobody had the stomach for another war. The two victorious nations, Barkus and Arkad, were two very different nations, roughly equal in size, and yet they attempted to shape the world as they saw fit to finally bring peace. They established the Galactic Federal Union together, and forced all the planets in the galaxy to join in order to be policed. Yet this was what caused the great divide between the two powers. The two nations had differing morals and values. The Arkadi Republic spoke of freedom from oppression and suffering, freedom of markets, and liberty. Yet Barkus was more authoritarian, but very left-leaning with their economy, as no business exists without the express permission and control of the state. The Galactic Cold War, as some historians jokingly called the Troubled Times, was short, lasting from 2818 to 2890. Each side vied for more control, expanding their sphere of influence time and time again. Perhaps the most notable change here is the abandonment of the AD and CE calendar. Instead, they adopted the Era Calendar. The first year of the Second Republican Era started in 2818.

During this period, the long-neglected planet of Terra threw off its shackles as a planet with sacred ties as religiosity dropped to an all-time low. Since Arkad was influenced by many Terrans, with its upper classes dominated by Terrans since the end of the revolution, Arkad was very supportive of the move to turn Terra into a formal nation. The Republic of Terra began to create a powerful military and industry with permission from the Arkadi sphere, though some nations saw this action as foolish. Former territories of the Five Empires declared war on mankind's cradle, but were swiftly defeated by the fledgeling nation with Arkadi intervention. This was the final straw for Barkus, who had straining relations with the Arkadi. It was difficult to not fight a war, so they opted instead to fight proxy wars. Barkus won many of these proxy wars, but Arkad won more. The already strained Barkus economy had expended itself. The unsustainable nature of the Alkavist-Communard economy was too much. They were forced to minimise military expenditure, which was their largest manufacturing sector, and switch to the agricultural and infrastructure sector. Even this was not enough to keep the economy alive, and in 2890, Barkus lost all its influence as the Alkavist government collapsed following a coup by autocratic politicians. The Second Republican Era ended thusly, with the Arkadi Republic guiding the world, and the GFU itself being under heavy Arkadi influence.

Spoiler: show
The first year of the Third Republican Era began on the 1st of January, 2891. It is the modern era. On Y3 TRE, the Arkadi adopted a new religion born on the Y40s, Second Republican Era, invented by a far-left libertarian group in Arkad, with an emphasis on debauchery and distraction. It was the greatest implementation of Epicurean philosophy. Not all were open to this, but the generation born during its rise became its most active defenders. This religion was called Neodemocratism, and was blindly followed by many citizens of the galaxy. Its followers were known for destroying old churches, spreading propaganda, and organising lewd marches in the streets of major cities. Many were disgusted, but chose not to speak openly about it out of fear of being persecuted by the Neodemocratists.

Arkad increased its power by sending its military all over the galaxy as part of a peacekeeping operation, as well as to squash the remnants of authoritarian control. Not only that, but they also paid discontent people to start full-scale rebellions against enemy regimes that have lead to the deaths of thousands. Increasing anti-Arkadi and anti-Neodemocratism sentiments have lead to discontent among the people, some of whom still believe in the age of the Empires despite their wars. Everything would once again change in the late 30s TRE in the planet of Dzhalus.

Larus Basil, a student of politics, began actively opposing Neodemocratism and the Arkadi for spreading it under the pen name of the Princeps Augustus. He was born to a middle class family in the Dzhali capital, the Dzhalipol, somewhere by the Capital Region. His early years were spent hiding, but that changed when he became an orator for his high school. By then, he had already fully constructed his own set of beliefs and philosophies. He was also an avid reader of history, and took inspiration from people like Caesar, Alexander, Napoleon, and most especially, Medinius Aurelius. When he went to college, he created his online persona via blogs that expressed his own beliefs. The first few failed, but he eventually managed to create the Legionary Post with the help of like-minded intellectuals. He called himself the Princeps Augustus. He gathered supporters all over his backwater planet-nation.

An avid supporter of the Ancient Church, he was frowned upon by many contemporaries in politics for his public views, and his online personality condemned. Even some of his friends condemned the Princeps Augustus. When war began to brew on the horizon, Larus pulled the rug from under his ideological foes as he gathered support from the working classes. It became clear that the corrupt politicians would be unwilling to give this unknown boy power, so Larus did what he thought was the only choice left: he declared open rebellion, for in his eyes, only strength will tell who is right in the end. He abandoned his friends, and had some of them assassinated. When the Legionary declared open rebellion, he was fully confirmed into the Ancient Church, and was renamed Laurentius Augustus Basileus, one of the leaders of the Legionary.

Contrary to popular belief, Laurentius was not the first leader of the Legionary. Before its establishment, Laurentius was indeed the face of the Legionary Post, but when the organisation was officially created, he was just one of twelve leaders. He gained their respect, and was made to be their official leader after the Northern Dzhalipol Campaign. Laurentius stopped the advance further into the Capital Region to shorten the campaign. His devious strategy was simply inspired, however. Recently, the Citizen Militia Order was enacted by the government forces. Commissars were sent out to arm and train the citizens of the Capital Region in the event of a rebel invasion. If the rebellion invaded, there would be a large loss of life, possibly in the hundreds of thousands, or even in the millions if the battle drags on for too long. A nuclear bomb was dropped into the rural city of Khariv, one of the false capitals of the Legionary when Laurentius refused to move into the city. Angered by the unnecessary murder the politicians of Dzhalus committed and attempted to commit, he gave an impassioned speech addressed to every Dzhali. The government forces were shocked, including some officials of the government. They immediately attempted to ally themselves with Laurentius, but some were killed in their attempt to escape. A bloodbath occurred in the city between the deserters and the remaining government forces.

The deserters succeeded in escaping, including many commissars, officials, private militias, and civilians. Laurentius pressed his advantage. He bombarded the city, and personally lead the assault on the Hall of Dzhalus, the main palace where the president and the remaining officials were holed up. There was fierce fighting, but the rebels finally got hold of the building. The president survived, but the other officials had committed suicide. After a short trial, the president was hanged on the grounds of using a nuclear weapon against a civilian target. The people rejoiced, and soon, many saw Laurentius as their true leader. He was already consul of the state at that moment. Several months later, however, the Ancient Church made its debut after a century in hiding. A massive stone church was erected beside the hall. In this hall, he was given a crown of iron and laurels, and was officially crowned Princeps by the Pontifex Maximus.

There were many reforms when Laurentius was made Princeps. He improved the economy by opening the mines and building up infrastructure in the rural areas. Khariv was improved upon, and at its centre was a massive monument made of marble. He improved the education system, with an emphasis on stoic philosophy, mathematics, and history, whilst making education cheaper. Society as a whole abandoned Neodemocratism, and embraced the Ancient Church. Brothels were destroyed, and prostitution made illegal. He edited the Medinian Code and implemented it in Dzhalus. Old churches were reopened and renovated, and grand temples were built. The destroyed Capital Region was rebuilt, and the entire workforce, including the military, was mobilised for the task of supplying food and building. The Grand Medinia was built in place of the Capital Region, and included neo-gothic and baroque revivalist architecture of grand scales. Of course, the military was improved. The navy, which once only had a hundred ships, was increased to over 15,000 by the first four years. A year into his reign, the Legion was born from the Legionary Youth: the youth wing of the Legionary Party. Over a hundred thousand pre-teens and teenagers signed into the program. While the economy was improved, poverty still existed. Poor children were recruited into the ranks of the Legion with high wages and pensions for their families. Doctor Sarel, the brains behind the Legionnaire Project, mass-produced the chemical formula for creating the Legionnaires. Since most were children when they were first recruited, there was ample time for indoctrination and education of engineering, history, public management, physics, tactics, and strategy. The first batch was ready on the eighth year of the Princeps' reign. The Legionnaires were equipped with the finest armour and weaponry available to the Principate. The Theme system was implemented, dividing Dzhalus into five sectors called Themes, from which men are drawn to serve the Thematic Armies.

By the twelfth year, Dzhalus had united the nearby planets in the region into a conglomerate, and soon, Lavrentia was formed with Dzhalus just being another pillar. The other planets under Lavrentia experienced the same reforms as Dzhalus. Lavrentia became all-encompassing. By the twelfth year of his reign, Laurentius had created a fleet of 35,000. Like Mars, it had adopted a warrior culture that kept stagnation at bay.

Arkad, however, was not going to let it all happen without doing anything. It created a boogeyman out of the fledgeling empire. It told the other nations that the Principate was a threat to the democracy and the peace that the GFU brought. Not all nations took up arms; they thought that Arkad could handle it all by themselves. However, Arkad was later joined by several other planet-states, and they all formed the Coalition that would fight against Lavrentia.
