The Lucky 13 chapter 3

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Irish Wolf on Mon Apr 11, 2011 3:09 pm

This is the IC thread for The Lucky 13 (reboot)

The sun peaked over the tops of massive unearthly trees, which looked more like a giant mutated ferns, then the Terran plant they were named after. As the warm rays of the summer gently caressed the planet’s surface, the various small animals began to stir, chirping and squawking to one another. The light also signaled four sleepy Provosts that their shift done and the unsettling night was over. Slowly the prison guards descended from the towers of Fort Jailbird.

Not that they were really guarding a fort but rather something more like a crudely built camp, surrounded by a fence. There were seven buildings inside, a small hut for the camp’s commanding officer, a two long buildings used to housed the Provosts and the convicts (separately of course), a small build that housed two medical personal and their tools, two storage building (one for the exercise equipment and one for food and other supplies) and one squat structure that was labeled as an armory, which as been empty. Now the fence should be taken into consideration.

It was strange for a place that contained convicted criminals. Between each fence post were four bars. Two of them were placed diagonally to form a large X, with one bar running along to the bottom and one bar running along the top. Each of the bars and fence post was electrified but if one were careful, it would be very easy to slip through. This is because the fence was not there to keep the convicts inside but to keep the local wildlife out and in particular, the Londinium Spider.

Now this native creature is not an Arachnid but does resemble them, looking very much like a jumping spider. There are several key differences though. Firstly, the Londinium Spider has ten legs. Secondly, they have but fours eyes, which are of the normal type, unlike the compound eyes of the Arachnid. However, the third difference is the greatest, seeing as that the Londinium Spider grows to be larger then a draft horse. Hey also do not weave webs but hunt at night, like large solitary cats and sleep during the day.

Major Robert Rogers, formerly of the 9th Regina Light Infantry and currently assigned to a special project by the Federation Council, woke up slowly. It was still early in the morning, or at least it was on Londinium, as it was roughly seven-thirty hours local time. As it was unsafe in the early hours, the camp had shifted everyone’s sleeping pattern to fit the local predators. On a normal day, in about half an hour, the Provosts would be waking the convicts in the bunkhouse, so they could start the five-mile run before breakfast.

On a normal day that is. The past few days had been anything but normal. It started when he wasn’t able to take the convicts for their the morning run. He had to inspect the shipment of arms that came into the camp and thus placed a provost Lieutenant named Davies in charge of that routine. The damn fool had lead them right into a hunting pack of juvenal Londinium Spiders. Nearly every one of his criminals had been bitten repeatedly (one had nearly been killed) and had been forced to spend the rest of the day in the infirmary. A good number had to spend the next day in there too and there was still at least one in there this morning.

This newest problem had set the training back. The plan had been to allow the convicts three days of practice with the weapons, before moving them to mock up of the city they were going to attack. Now they were going to get one day to pick through the assorting firearms, find one they really liked and get to know it better then their own bodies. Wonderful, truly wonderful.

Moving slowly, the Major lifted his lean and muscular body from the cot, so that he did not disturb his partner. A couple of months ago, he would have laughed at the notion of his caring about Inali Vercona, the prison whore he had recruited from a frozen shithole called Jukau Gamma, for a near suicide mission deep behind enemy lines on a planet far from his home. But you know, surviving mutinies, attacks by alien life forms, attempted murder together and some great sex could change just about anyone’s mind. Maybe just the really great sex would have been enough to make him care about her beauty sleep. Whatever it was, it didn’t matter, not really.

As Rogers started to dress in his utilities, getting on his shorts and pants before he couldn’t help reflect on his mission. He had recruit thirteen convicts, train them and then attempted to destroy a number of defensive installations, on a world held by the Tarnakians, an alien race bent on wiping out humanity. As he went through the mission details in his head, he couldn’t help the look of smoldering anger, as he came to the communication he had received just about a month ago.

It had been about the weapons he was expected to force his convicts to use. Now he wasn’t a big enough fool to think they were going to get the latest and greatest weapons in humanity’s arsenal, like the Mark IV Pulselaser Carbine but he had been think that they’d get the somewhat dangerous Mark Is. This was not the case, they were going to get even older weapons, that used a chemical explosive to fire a projectile from the muzzle of the firearm!

Inali felt the mattress shift as the man next to her got off the bed. She'd been in a half awake daze, having awoken from yet another nightmare. She wasn't entirely sure if that's what you'd call them though, as they were less scenes made up by her subconscious and more scenes from the horrible Meade debacle. The whole thing had ended horribly, causing her to lose teammates she'd actually liked. Including Tony, a man who might as well have been her brother. The whole thing was too much for Inali to bother trying to process in her waking hours, which caused the thoughts to surface when she went to sleep.

With the Major off the mattress Inali flopped onto her stomach with a light grunt so as to get a better look at the clock. She squinted at the clock with a small frown before burying her face into the sheets and letting out a sigh. She had two options, one, go back to bed. Or two, figure out just why the Major had woken up earlier this time. Being a person easily consumed by curiosity, the choice was easy. Shifting up so that she was sitting on her knees Inali wrapped the blanket around herself and yawned, turning in the Major's direction.

"You're up early again." She observed, rubbing sleep out of one eye and fixing her hair with the other. For a moment her eyes locked with the Major's and she looked away, feeling an odd sense of guilt. Since the spider attack it'd been hard for Inali not to feel guilty. She'd come up with a grand idea, a horrible idea, a horribly grand idea. Since seeing her friend almost die for the third time the seeds had been planted in Inali's head to help him escape the camp, and it was hard for her to look at the Major when she knew there would be some sort of betrayal between the two. Granted, a large part of why she wanted Al off the planet was because he and the Major were like cats and dogs, whenever they were near each other one could feel the tension. It was only a matter of time before they tried to rip each others throats out.

Actually, Inali was pretty sure they'd already tried that.

It was odd for Inali to feel guilty about something such as this, especially since she hadn't even put the plan into action yet. It almost felt like cheating, though, it wasn't as if there was anything to cheat on. She and the Major weren't together. All Inali was doing was repaying him for getting her off that ice rock, keeping her promise. Besides, she'd been the neutral party between the Major and Alistair since day one, nothing she did that involved the two of them should have been considered surprising.

Well, unless that something was picking a side and sticking with it.

"You know Rogers, if you make leaving this early a habit I may have to find someone else to stay and warm me." She smirked. "Though, you've made yourself quite the convict harem with all the new female recruits" She added almost coyly, the air of humor in her voice as she dangled her legs over the side of the bed. The former convict stood up and walked over the the Major, pulling the sheets along with her.

"Typical man, you know?" She mused out loud, not really paying attention to what she was saying as she let her nails run across the Major's chest from under his shirt. Usually when he was getting up early it meant he had business to tend to, but that wouldn't stop Inali from trying. "Leaving me to do things like make the bed and clean up our mess while you're going out doing god knows what." Plus, she wanted to know what he was up to. Being a convict Inali should have been left in the dark about things, but she didn't fancy that idea all that much. So, she'd pull as much information out of her bed mate as possible if it meant not being completely ignorant. "I can really only imagine what you'd be up to." She noted, tapping a finger to her lips and looking back with a sigh before turning her gray eyes up to the Major hopefully.

“You should make up your mind” said Rogers, one of his eyes brows arching slightly and the corners of his mouth twitching towards what might have been a smile. Almost with a mind of it’s own, one of his hands slipped under the blanket, which was draped over his bedmate. Slowly, his fingertips explored her hip before moving across her lower back and up her spine. If she was going to molest his chest while he was trying to get dressed, well he was allowed to do something in return. Although, she might just like more, if he molested her chest, not her back.

“In one breath” he continued, “You hint at leaving and in the next, you almost sound protective of your spot. Your not jealous are you, now that we have more pretty women around?

I hope your friend isn’t thinking about snacking.”

The last sentence was delivered with a ghost of a smile. The Major had cracked a joke and about the biggest pain in his ass in the universe, Alistair. Now of course, after the giant’s brush with death, he had been a changed man or at least he had seemed to be. The big cannibal was good at convincing others that he was something that he was not. The first time that the army officer had met him, he had been convinced that the giant was mentally challenged and little more then a muscle bound toy Inali had found somewhere within the icy tomb, of the former Jukau Gamma penal colony.

The bastard turned out to be anything but mentally challenged, showing a sharp wit in planning and executing a planned mutiny aboard FMS Triumph, an old destroyer in the Federation Navy, which ended with the vessel being consumed in an explosion. He had also shown a great deal of intelligence, during the conflict with Captain Meade, when he put aside his hatred of Robert and joined the army officer in removing a common foe. Now if only they could be certain that the new, soldier-boy version of Alistair was really who the convict was. It would certainly be better then the woman eating monster, he truly was.

“Nervous” said Rogers, getting back from his own internal thoughts and the original question posed by Inali, “I keep thinking about what could go wrong today and how I can keep it from happening. I have to give you lot weapons today and have you practice with them. Is any of your comrades going to lose it and try to kill everyone? Is one of the Provosts going to have a nervous trigger finger? A complete revolt once everyone has a gun? Is Alistair going to pull something?”

Inali frowned a bit at the man's quip about her being jealous. Jealous? Bah, Inali was above something so petty. Besides, green wasn't her color. Just because she was worried someone might take her place next to Rogers at night didn't mean she was jealous. . . It just meant she wanted to be the best at everything. . . . Or something to that effect.

Listening to the Major Inali cocked her head to the side as she chewed on her lower lip. He made a good point and Inali would be damned if she could answer the questions he the latest situation posed. Pressing the side of her face against his back her chest heaved out another sigh.

"Well. . ." She began, her finger coiling around the fabric of his shirt. "I'd like to think for the sake of freedom they won't try anything. I can't make any promises about that though, I mean, I shot Alistair. Still, I don't think one of the inmates would get this close to freedom just to blow everything to Hell. The odds are against 'em. As for Al. . . Well, no promises."

“I hope so” said Rogers, withdrawing his hand from under the blanket. His fingers lingered, touching her skin for a long as possible. If he allowed himself to continue for much longer, the temptation to turn around and pull the cloth off of the convict’s body would become overpowering. Then, well the day would start much later then it should, given all the practice they had to cram into it. Hell, the day should start early and he had idea as to what would put him a little more at ease.

“Inali” he said, turning around to face her, “Do an old man a favor and get dressed. I want you to go wake up the others and pass out the morning’s ration bars. We have a lot to do today. I’ll meet everyone in half an hour at the Armory. We’ll leave the bed like it is, privilege of command you know.”

Inali leaned into the Major's touch, waiting for him to say more. She communicated better with her body and in these few and far in between moments where the Major disclosed his worries to her Inali couldn't help but feel slightly uncomfortable. So much for not getting close. Her plans from accepting the mission had gone horribly awry. Pulled out of her thoughts by the Major speaking again Inali couldn't help but roll her eyes and subsequently pout her lips at the man telling her to get dressed.

"Fine, fine, I'll go put on some pants." Inali grumbled, making her way to her clothes, the blanket dragging behind her.

+++

Not to toot her own horn, but Inali was pretty confident in the fact that she could do some pretty impressive things. However, Inali knew that there was know way she could get some quality face time with Alistair, wake up the other inmates, and hand out rations all in less than thirty minutes. Because of this she'd enlisted the help of a soldier on camp to do it for her.

The good thing about moving around from ship, to another ship, to a camp was that the fresh blood meant easier manipulation. They weren't completely aware of her methods yet, and so twisting people around her finger was a quicker process. She was happy she'd gotten someone else to do it, she didn't want the teammates pissy with her for interrupting their beauty sleep.

"All right! Rise and shine!" The man barked as Inali slipped past him and through the rows of suddenly awake people. Her steps were long and quick, she walked with a determination unfitting of her very close destination. Though, the look on her face simply could have been the discomfort of walking on her spider bitten leg. Whatever the matter, Inali made it to the back of the room where the giant she was looking for stood, almost completely still.

"Al." Inali began with a smile genuine enough to be sickening to her. She was more than sure that this time when she spoke to him the older Alistair was closer to the surface. She could tell, she'd spent too many days looking at that face to know what gears were turning in his head. Now, if only she knew what his thoughts were as opposed to the manner in which he was thinking.

It was after saying his name that Inali wondered how she was going to go about telling Alistair about her plans. It wasn't as if they were in private and Inali wasn't about to blurt out "Hey! I've decided to get you the hell out of here!". The only way she'd be able to tell him was if she made him bend down so she could disclose her latest scheme, and that would be suspicious. "I have a present for you." She began, turning her body from side to side in an almost coy manner as she twirled a strand of hair on her index finger. "For being such a good friend, but I can't give it to you till later." Inali was hoping it would sound sexual to any outside parties, she'd rather have her think that she was doing what she usually did as opposed to plotting.

The lumbering giant leaned forward bracing himself over using the tiny white porcelain sink for balance within the communal showers. The effects of the drugs had made him weak. Once again the fight was knocked out of him. It was better that way he thought considering the burning emotion that festered inside. Reaching forward he clumsily turned the tap and began to flush his face with cold water that rushed forth. Bringing a hand to the mirror he made a few quick circles in the fog revealing his reflection.

The cold electric blue eyes studied the unfamiliar face in front of him. He curiously poked a thick elongated finger into his mouth probing the crudely sharpened teeth with a hard jagged nail. Was the monster they claimed him to be inside? His mind was still in a thick fog from the medications he had been administered for the pain. He could not remember the circumstances that brought him here, not that it mattered really; it only carried with it more questions.

Gently he poked about the series of bluish-purple welts that speckled much of the pale frame with utter curiosity. Most accounts were the same but he didn’t want to accept the fact of the man they claimed him to be. Why would he? Heroic shit like that was going to get him killed. What was the use of such charades anyways? The major wasn’t going to be fooled again. Twice now Alistair in recent times since the HSM Triumph debacle Alistair had apparently resorted to such uncontrolled foolishness, and it wasn’t getting him any closer to his ultimate goal....FREEDOM.

Rubbing the course strawberry-blonde stubble that adorned his jaw amid the raised dark red scar tissue he ascertained things weren’t about to change no matter what heroics he pulled off. The two burly soldiers currently stationed outside his barracks door spoke volumes in regards to the Major’s trust. Despite the fugitive’s most recent actions he would always be evaluated by his past. Not that the Major’s concerns were unwarranted, the conniving sociopath was determined to get out from under this gauntlet of authority and satisfy his growing appetite. Even if it meant biting his tongue and playing nice until such an opportunity presented itself.

Play nice, who was he kidding, he had been chained up for far too long. Could he deny his nature forever? He hadn’t satisfied his carnal cravings since the little Asian biscuit that was presented to him aboard the destroyer. Even that was hasty having the knowledge an audience was present. With the buffet of fresh feminine flesh that the Major had gathered these hidden desires would only become more persistent and harder to control.

"All right! Rise and shine!" A male voice barked beyond the doorway.

Looking past his reflection he quickly located the neatly hung military utilities on the plaster wall behind him. Reaching around, he wrestled the light green trousers off the hangar and pulled the freshly pressed pants up over his boxers. Next, he quickly and efficiently laced up the pristinely kept combat boots that adorned his feet. The lower half of his wardrobe complete the wanna-be soldier swung the light green jacket over a fresh white tee shirt as the diminuitive spitfire hovered in the doorway.

"Al." Inali began "I have a present for you for being such a good friend, but I can't give it to you till later."

Alistair ignored the inference giving the covering one final tug to straighten the wrinkles from dressing. It was far from likely that she spoke of the same endearing “offerings” she presented him with back on Jukau Gamma. She had moved on and those desperate times and the symbiotic relationship they formed out of necessity were as far behind her as the penal colony they left behind. Yet there she was, turning her body from side to side in an almost coy manner she twirled a strand of hair on her index finger. If she was anything she was persistent.

Uniform complete the behemoth man adjusted the snug fitting patrol cap over the steel plate riveted to his skull. Like it or not he had accepted the fact that he was on his own. Why should he care? She would dump him at the first convenient moment anyways, it was her nature. If it was not for her intervention he probably would have the freedom he longed for.

“Aren’t you the Major’s pet??” He scoffed.

He turned to face her standing feet shoulder width apart, hands clasped behind his back as the others reluctantly rolled out of their racks. No need to make matters worse than they already were. Alistair didn’t want any unnecessary attention drawn his way. Not from the provosts, not from the others, he was under the microscope as it was.

“Thank you for the thought but I respectfully decline your offer.” He continued, loud enough for the meddlesome gossips to overhear. “We wouldn’t want you to lose any of your special privileges involving yourself with the likes of me.”

“After all, I am still the Major’s leper.”

“Aren’t you the Major’s pet??”

Well, that part was true----Wait, no, no. That wasn't true at all. She wasn't the Major's pet. That insinuated ownership, Inali was her own person dammit! Inali's lip twitched into a frown as her body stiffened. Alistair was, yet again, being a difficult ass. Inali's stop twirling her hair and instead her hand went to rubbing the scar on her shoulder.

“Thank you for the thought but I respectfully decline your offer. We wouldn’t want you to lose any of your special privileges involving yourself with the likes of me.”

The bastard may as well have been asking for her to lash into him at this point. Inali's tongue grazed over her top row of teeth as she glared up at Alistair in a fashion that would suggest she was rather displeased with him. Well, displeased putting would be putting it lightly. Inali's attitude and temperament had done a one eighty (as it had a tendency to do around Al) while she mused about how she was going to get him down to her height. If he wasn't going to willingly listen to her she was going to force her words into his ear.

Fast enough that nobody would notice it unless they'd been looking for it, the side of Inali's fist made contact with the man's crotch. If anything this would just look like an angry retaliation to anyone who over heard them. In her days with Alistair she'd done a lot of things to him, but this was the first crotch shot. She figured desperate times called for desperate measures. Besides, she didn't hit it too hard. . . Or at least she hoped she didn't.

As suspected the giant lurched forward and Inali wasted no time gripping the collar of his shirt and yanking his ear closer to her mouth.
"Stop being such an ass and just listen to me." She hissed. "I've decided to get you the hell off this planet and sending you blasting off in whatever direction will get you closer to freedom." She growled out the last part, pushing him away and inhaling deeply as she put her hands on her hips. Chewing on her lower lip Inali waited for a response. Sure, she'd have liked to put some ass kissing in there and a few I know I'm horrible person, but forgive me lines in there but there wasn't much time for that. Anyway, they were in public, that would be gross.

"It feels like I'm the only one trying to fix this here, Al." She sighed after a moment, folding her arms and looking away. This was about as much emotion as she was about to let out. Besides, such musings didn't sound suspicious. They sounded more like someone trying to fix a broke marriage. Besides, wasn't that almost exactly what the trust between a mastermind criminal and a prison whore was? A marriage? Well, no, it wasn't. But dammit, Inali liked to think it was a decent enough comparison. Alistair would understand what she meant anyway.

"All right! Rise and shine!" a gruff voice barked, whisking away the last hazy remnants of sleep from Natalia’s mind. She continued to lay in her bed, exhausted and still sore from her previous injuries, with her honey-brown eyes still closed to the world.

Why in the hell did I agree to any of this? she wondered silently. Ah, yeah right. Freedom. Freedom, my ass.

It had been only two years since she had first been convicted of her crimes and her lawyers, funded by the Syndicate, were good but they were no match for the judicial system when it was out for blood. Apparently you couldn’t ship illegals anymore without a ton of people getting up your ass about it. Pity, since it had been a good life while it had lasted. Then she had been dropped off in that shit-hole of a Penal Colony and fell from the top of the food chain right down to the bottom.

Shaking those depressing thoughts from her mind, the brunette sighed and rolled off of her bed, landing on her feet and facing in just the right direction to view of the odd couple arguing.

“Aren’t you the Major’s pet??” she heard from the giant of a man and she had sense enough to turn around and ignore them as she prepared herself for the day. She had slept in a pair of boy shorts and a tank since it was hotter than hell on this planet. So all she had to do was drag on her ugly uniform and run a brush through her hair to be presentable enough for their daily drudgery.

Looking at the brush before she set it down, she was surprised that they let the convicts have anything that would be deemed even slightly dangerous. Her fellows could just as easily go on a rampage with a whittled down hairbrush as they could with whatever weapons they had chosen previously. She didn’t believe herself to be as crazy as any of the other convicts thus far, especially since most of them had been convicted of some form of murder. Her own charges stemmed from the bastards trying to take her ship away from her, not because she was psychotic enough to take a human life for shits and giggles.

A quick glance over her shoulder proved that the two convicts in the back were still arguing and she sighed, pushing her hair away from her face with one hand as she crossed the room to stand in front of the Soldier that had awoken them. Crossing her arms beneath her breasts, she settled her weight onto one leg and waited for the rest of the crew to join.

"All right! Rise and shine!"

Jason Cross' eyes just popped open, and he sat up after a moment of making sure he hadn't imagined the voice. No, he hadn't imagined it, and yes, he was still here and not in chains having been thrown to the wolves after waking up. He stretched his arms, swinging his feet out of the bed. He didn't even notice the heat planet side, so he still had the prison uniform he had when recruited to wear, just minus the sleeves to make a belt and headband.

It had been a long four years coming. From being crucified by many a friend or family member of those 'victims' of the fire, to being put through the motions of being considered criminally insane and the lawyer working a miracle and getting him tossed into that hellhole prison planet. Only to be picked up, in transit, for a suicide mission that would grant him freedom. Like he bought that. They would succeed and get thrown right back into the hole they crawled out of. No one in their sane mind would free any one here.

“Aren’t you the Major’s pet??” Cross barely smirked at that, glancing over at the two arguing. Odd set up, those two. But he had the common sense to keep his tongue in check. There was no good reason to piss anyone off at the moment, so he would refrain from doing so. And getting involved would not end well so he turned away and would pick his battles elsewhere. He ran a hand through his hair, which took care of the roughest of the mess and made it look presentable enough for this lot to care.

Striding over to where Mr. Loud, who had woken them up, had taken to standing, another convict had already arrived, waiting for everyone else. He just nodded, a sort of greeting, to her, more out of politeness than anything. Just because he was the scum of the galaxy doesn't mean he couldn't be polite. That was something that had pissed off the interrogators. That subtle politeness which was just respectful enough, but taunting at the same time. That was fun, he decided with an ending internal smirk.

Letting those thoughts go, he let his arms at his side while waiting for whatever Mr. Loud had woken them for was. Whether it was the same old or something new.

"All right! Rise and shine!"

Lynx had been awake for quite sometime now, yawning she sat up on her bunk. Rubbing away the last bits of sleep out of her emerald colored eyes, she stretched her limbs, causing her joints to click loudly. She hadn't caught much of it lately, not with all of those folk around her. Their wandering eyes, they were staring at her. In her slightly warped sense of reality, she was convinced of that. Though for now she had to bare with it, or at least she could always make a runner once they were on that ridiculously suicidal mission. Well that or death, the latter seemed more and more appealing to her, after weeks of this mind numbing torture they called training. At the end of the day, they weren't going to get the freedom they were after, she was sure of that too. So why was she here?

Might as well go out with a bang, ha, a hint of a smile grazed her lips briefly, before she got up and straightened out her attire. Pulling her Prison suit half way up to her waist, Lynx tied it up by its sleeves, exposing her scar ridden arms. Reaching over to the makeshift bedside, she pulled a hairband out of it's drawer, and tied her raven braids into a ponytail. She had considered to shave it all off, but it was the only thing on her that was somewhat inviolate, comparable to her days past. Her finger tips, lightly hovering above the scarred tissue on her face, she sighed. Maybe if I get out of here in one piece ... maybe I'll be able to fix myself.

Her eyes, or rather her fully intact left eye was watching Inali and that tall fella Ali argue about something. She couldn't make out what exactly was said, but it didn't end well - for the guy that is. He was greeted by a punch to the crotch, a little surprised Lynx couldn't help but chuckle silently. Her sly amusement wasn't going to last for long, as she was interrupted by the strange shot of pain she's been experiencing ever since she had that acid thrown at her. The entire right side of her face felt lame, heavy and very tender, it was usually at its worst in the evenings but the pain still caught her off guard sometimes.

Holding on to her face for a moment, she waited for the pain to slowly fade away. A parting gift from that godforsaken place. Grumbling something under her breath, she made herself get up. One could say she was on the taller side of females, standing at just 5'9 she was hardly unnoticeable. Walking over to the other waiting convicts, averting anyones gaze, she focused her eyes upon the floor. She wouldn't dare to budge into other peoples' business.

Corporal Denis Morris smiled as the convicts lined up before him. Before joining the Provosts (which is to say before he was arrested, tried, convicted), he had been a mild mannered counterfeiter. Strange what three years in a penal colony and five years in the ranks could do to a person. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that his new job allowed, encouraged and even ordered him to beat the crap out of people. Or maybe it was that the old saying about power corrupting was true after all. Whatever had caused it, he enjoyed making others dance to his tune and waking up the convicts early was fun.

Reaching into a satchel at his right hip, the Provost pulled out something rectangular and wrapped in foil. It was about seven inches long, two wide and one thick. Letters on the foil proclaimed that it was a full breakfast of bacon, eggs and hash browns. In truth it was a bar of processed protein, carbs and other supplements, which was divided in color-coded thirds. The yellow part was suppose to taste like eggs, the red part was suppose to taste like bacon and the brown part was suppose to taste like hash browns. Most people weren’t sure what they tasted like but it didn’t taste like breakfast.

“Next” barked Denis, after thrusting the ration bar into the female convict’s hands. As the next convict stepped up, they too received (none too gently) breakfast. The process repeated until eleven of the thirteen were handed a meal. He glanced over at the remaining two and licked his lips. It was the giant (whom they were to watch carefully) and Inali. Part of him wanted to chuck the ration bars at them and hope for a head shot but the little woman had promised him some fun of he took her job of waking and feeding the convicts. She might refuse if he hit her (or her friend) and he really couldn’t force the Major’s fucktoy to do anything, if he wanted to remain in the ranks.

“Everyone’s getting a special treat this morning” came another male voice, as a second Provost arrived in the bunkhouse. He was carrying a large metal cylinder with a tap on the bottom, along with a pile of paper cups.

“I don’t know what you did” continued the second Provost, setting the cylinder down on a table, “But the Major thinks you deserve real coffee.”

“Wait for it.”

Each carefully chosen word scratched down the slate walls of her receptors producing the eerie irritating screech he had desired. He could see the emotion bubbling up inside her; the words were designed to get her off her game. Inali was probing and he needed to give himself the edge. Her lip twitched into a frown, her body stiffened the hair twirling stopped and her hand went mindlessly to rubbing the scar on her shoulder he had given her. The volcano was about to erupt.

What he hadn’t counted on was the forerunner leading up her sounding off manifesting itself as a simple well placed swat to his bag of marbles. Alistair’s eyes opened wide as the dull nauseating pain rippled through his abdomen. The unforeseen attack, a reminder of her resourcefulness, easily doubled the imposing giant forward making him more pliable to her wishes. This superman had met his kryptonite who wasted no time gripping the collar of his shirt and yanking his ear closer to her mouth.

"Stop being such an ass and just listen to me."She hissed.

While engaged in this dubious position Alistair took the opportunity to note the reactions of those present. The two knuckle-headed bookends that served as his personal chaperones quickly snapped into high alert at the first signs of confrontation. They were wound far too tight for their own good. A definite symptom stemming no doubt Roger’s extrapolated tales of just what the unforgiving giant was capable of if left unsupervised. Their presence would prove to be a minor deterrent but they were far too dim-witted to be effective.

This was as good an opportunity as any to judge the reactions of his bunkmates. Men were typically unobservant, oblivious to a great deal that was going on about them at any given time. Women on the other hand in his experience were notoriously curious and thus proved to be more attentive. Alistair needed to keep those prying noses out of his business if he were to be successful this time around. A quick glance among the convicts pinpointed the snoopers tipping him off to potential threats in the future.

"I've decided to get you the hell off this planet and sending you blasting off in whatever direction will get you closer to freedom." She whispered. Now that titbit of information did bend his ear catching his full attention. It held value, not that he believed a word of it. But he could use her willingness as a distraction to orchestrate his own escape. After all she had betrayed him once.

All he had to do now is to determine her motivation for this sudden revelation of thought. Was she sent by the Major in an effort to acquire and manipulate the details, reporting back his every move? It was better for the Major to keep the master criminal in check dangling a carrot he could control and pull away at any time. He would hold the cards.

What if she were true to her word? Dedicated to getting the handful of cannibal the freedom he longed for. Not that she would be giving society any real favour in doing so. What was her motivation?

It wasn’t likely that the manipulative prostitute had a sudden encounter with her conscience. That interfering feature that held her accountable had been turned off long ago. The more likely of the possibilities was she simply didn’t want to be left behind. She knew Al and there was no way he was going to sit on his laurels and let the Major beat him down. He was planning an escape and she wanted in on the action.

"It feels like I'm the only one trying to fix this here, Al." She sighed after a moment, folding her arms and looking away.

"You can tell that paranoid bastard of a bed partner I DON’T need his babysitters, I JUST want to be left alone. I’ll follow him on this blasted wild goose alien hunt of his despite my better judgement. He just better make damn sure he comes through on his promises."

Much of Alistair’s rant was distorted by the deafening ruckus of the arriving transport as it fired its thrusters to stabilize the craft for a vertical landing manoeuvre next to the small compound. The tiny barracks and the ground it was situated on began to vehemently shake vibrating under the enormous forces exerted during the landing. Alistair instinctively began to follow the sound pushing past the diminutive obstacle stationed in the doorway as if she wasn’t even there. This was odd, he thought making his way across the trembling room towards the window. This arrival was anything but ordinary; the next transport wasn’t to arrive for weeks.

“It couldn’t be this easy now could it?”

The provost's shouted summons found Nemesis awake and fully dressed, sitting cross-legged on her neatly made bed. She usually to rose early, to not only make sure she kept an eye on the other inmates, but because she preferred to have the bathroom to herself in the morning. It was fun to maintain the mystique of what lay behind her mask. Rising promptly, she neatened her cot with a swipe of her hand and stepped smartly into her place in line.

She knew it irritated the Colonel when people denied him his little pleasures, like rude awakenings, and didn't feel like dealing with his shit today. So, she kept her eyes forward and her posture an unconcerned neutral as she waited for the roll of colored crap they called chow, using her ears to tell her what was going on in the room. It had been fun for a while to play the good little soldier; it gave her a chance to size up the game and the players, establish herself as one of the 'good ones' and get herself back into shape after months of cell confinement. From experience, she knew that the less one did to draw attention to themselves, the more they could get away with. So far she hadn't broken so much as a single one of the rules laid down for convicts here. That was going to change soon, though.

Rumor had it that the armory was now stocked, and she had to admit she was excited. She didn't expect top of the line armaments or anything but even second or third-rate military grade weapons should be pretty good. Months had passed since she last held a firearm, and she hadn't realized how much she'd come to adore them until they were taken away from her. Her guns, her ships, her men, she would have them all back one day. Today was the first step.

She didn't show it, but she was interested in her fellow criminals. Watching their daily struggles and interactions was the best form of entertainment this place had to offer. The little whore she found particularly entertaining, always working this angle or that john to get what she wanted when half the time she didn't seem to have a very good idea of what that was.

Watching Inali with Alistair was fun, too. He acted so harmless most of the time, but she'd heard the stories, not just of what had happened since signing on with the Major, but if how he came to be in such need of pardon in the first place. He was a real guy after her own heart. With those two it was like watching someone play with a jack-in-the-box- keep turning that guy's crank and sooner or later that quiet, unassuming box was going to explode into a nightmare. Nemesis hoped she could be there with a bowl of popcorn if it happened. Days of Our Inmates' Lives was starting to get pretty dull.

The provost shoved a Log o' Breakfast against her chest, using the aggressive movement as an excuse to grab her breast. She accepted the grope without comment or enjoyment and walked away. Tearing open the wrapper, she lifted her mask enough to shove half in her mouth. It didn't matter which half. It all tasted like cardboard. Slash marks, still an angry red after so many years, marred as much of her lips and right cheek as was visible. Chewing, she lowered her mask back into place and put the rest in her pocket for later.

A second provost entered and the rich aroma of coffee permeated the room. Nemesis didn't move though. Being a sadistic bastard herself, she knew that anyone to go for some before being told to do so was in for it. Ah, how she missed those days. Before the order could be given, a low rumble from outside quickly grew to a roar of back-firing thrusters. The vibrations knocked over the stack of cups, sending several rolling off the table to the floor. Turning her head, she looked curiously at the door. Just yesterday she'd overheard a provost complaining that he didn't think their store of alcohol would last until the transport came next month. An unscheduled drop then? Interesting.

After sending Inali out to wake the convicts, Rogers left his little hut and made his way over to the reinforced shed they were using for an armory. One of his cigarillos was clamped between his teeth, the end glowing red as he pull the calming drug into his mouth. The smoke was expelled through his nose, in just about the comical way, old cartoon character would blow steam from their nostrils and ears, when they were mad. Now if only he had a recording of a factory whistle being blown, it would have been perfect.

At the shed, half of the camp’s forty Provosts waited with their Commissar, a Lieutenant named Fredrickson. Each was wearing some of the old, ballistic body armor, which had been phased out of regular Army stores and passed on to PDF and Provost forces. It just wasn’t effective against laser-based weaponry used by humans (both Federation and rebel forces) or the weapons of the alien invaders, even those projectile one that bog brutes carried. All of them were armed too; truncheons, pulselaser pistols and shotguns. A few of the sergeants and Fredrickson carried machine pistols. It might seem overly much but they were about to have out formerly military grade firepower to a bunch of criminals, ranging from mentally unbalanced to those desperate to escape. Better to be prepared, just in case.

Nodding to the guards, the Major walked up to the shed and pressed his thumb against the lock. There was a click and the door swung open on a gunnut’s wet dream. The weapons had arrived a few day before, while he had the convicts out on a training run and they had found the spiders. There had been cases and cases of weapons and ammo moved into the camp. There were submachine guns, assault rifles (some of which were outdated army issue and some that must have been local models from the armory they had been stored in), shotguns, a single light machine gun, a case of what he guessed were sniper rifles, a few machine pistols and more then a few cases of handguns. The second to last case he opened, had a treasure in it, a Mark I Flechette Cannon.

Now the Mark I had been developed for Federation Special Forces, as an anti-light armor and anti-personal weapon. It rather looked like a Milkor MGL but with ten chambers in the revolving cylinder, as apposed to six. It was loaded with what looked like over-sized shotgun shells, which were packed with flechettes (for those that don't know, a flechette is a pointed steel projectile with a tail, much like a dart). The mark I was removed from service when too many reports came in, of the flechettes going through walls or enemy combatants and killing friendlies.

In the last container, Rogers found just what he was looking for. When he had been informed that he wasn't getting any Pulselasers, he sent bribes out to a few selected quartermasters and arranged for fifteen Mark IV pulselaser pistols to be included in the shipment. The Mark IV was chunkier then his Mark IX, had a slower rate of fire, didn't have a non-lethal setting and burned through a powercell quicker (where a cell would provide twenty shots in a IX, a IV would get a dozen) but at least it was a stable weapon, unlike several other variants of the Pulselaser pistol.

As the Provosts started taking a few samples of each weapon and placing them on a long table, there was a high pitched whine, which grew into a roar, as a box-like transport appeared in the shy over Fort Jailbird. Confused faces looked upwards, as they ungainly looking thing came in for a landing. They weren’t suppose to get any supplies for a month and the shuttling of the convicts between the camp and the new training facility wasn’t suppose to start until tomorrow.

“Commissar” roared Robert, over the noise of the thrusters, “Take half your men and get the convicts out here! Don’t let them touch the toys until I get back! I’m gonna go find out why the flyboy is here!”

“Yes Sir!” Fredrickson roared back.

Eleven armed and armored men trotted towards the bunkhouse and the Major marched towards the transport, the wind pulling on his cloths. As he approached the gunmetal gray hull, the ramp on the back of the bird dropped open and a man dressed in the red trimmed, blue uniform of the Londinium Planetary Defense Forces, waved for him to come aboard.

“Major Rogers” said the man, after Robert had walked up the ramp and it had closed behind him, “I am Colonel Moore. I’ve been instructed to tell you that your timetable has changed. I’m to take you and your Special Forces unit to the City today.”

“What” said the Major, “On who’s authority?”

“Way above our pay grade” said Moore, holding out a dataslate.

Rogers took the offered dataslate and started reading. Orders right from the Federation Council, cutting his time to train his ‘Special Forces’ down to one week more. It appeared that things were getting hot. The Tarnakians were gathering a large armada of their largest and heaviest armed ships, including a few classes of vessel never encountered before in combat. Ground actions had been redoubled against Federation troops on Bomy 8 and raids were coming hot and fast in several new sectors. Military Intelligence was sure that the enemy was trying to spread them thin, for a massive push on Bomy, so that the fleet there would be forced to retreat or destroyed. Without the fleet, the Ninth, Tenth, Sixteenth and newly arrived Twenty-Forth armies would be overrun. The mission needed to happen now, before the aliens could launch their counterstrike.

“Damn it” snarled Robert.

After taking her own inedible breakfast and downing it in seconds flat, Natalia took another look around the room now that the others were all wide awake. Everyone had their story. It was just that some were more willing to share that story than others and little was shared between them to offer a starting point for conversation. How would you use murder and crime as an ice breaker? Hi! I’m Natalia. I hear you murdered a few dozen people
 How’s it going?

No thanks. It didn’t seem like any of them were actually a part of this mission to save the planet or anything. No, everyone was out to save their own asses and she was just waiting to see which of the convicts would be the pawns and which would be the players. She was inarguably lonely though and wanted to insert herself somewhere in the hierarchy so her eyes wandered from convict to convict. The masked woman. The gaunt man with blazingly bright blue eyes. The beautiful yet scarred woman with the emerald green gaze.

During her casual inspection, she turned to see the odd couple still arguing in the back as the rest of her fellow convicts roamed around aimlessly. A quick look over her shoulder at the Provost that had delivered their morning meal captured him staring blankly at the Giant before gazing heatedly at Inali. Jesus, were all men such pigs? Her honeyed eyes rolled and a quick flick of her wrist had Nat snatching the two remaining bars out of the Corporal’s hands with a smirk.

“Want me to do your job for you, sugar? I understand... The big one’s scary.” Her voice was soft yet slightly taunting as she delivered her verbal jab and her hips swung as she did a 180, turning away.

Not waiting for his retribution, she stalked off across the room, finding the curvy beauty, Inali, first and pressing a set of rations into her hand. “You look like you could use something in your mouth.” She teased as a grin filled her features to show that she was trying to lighten the situation, instead of being catty as so many other women seemed to be. Fact was that this other woman Inali was quite intriguing and since Natalia knew they were all probably going to die in a blaze of glory (or not so much), she may as well have fun while she could. So that led her to curve her path around the woman’s back so closely that she was sure that Inali could almost feel her pass as she walked onto her next destination.

Though they weren’t spread far apart, her next target was the Giant so she could repeat her offering. She had heard so many rumors about this man that one would think that he were the Grim Reaper or one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. His presence had everyone on edge, even the Major, and he always seemed to have a couple of guards pinned to his backside at all times. It made her wonder how the Giant even breathed without a Provost twitching out accidentally shooting him.

So, being the survivalist that she was, Natalia decided that small gestures wouldn’t hurt her standing with the Giant and she walked to him next. Noticing that he had his attention centered outside of the window, she took the chance to disrupt his focus by waving the ration bar in front of his face.

“Delicious and nutritious. Tastes just like sawdust.”

Another quirk of her mouth signified the joke though she doubted any of the other convicts cared for humor. She had to do something to entertain herself even if no one else got a kick out of it.

As she held the rations bar aloft with one hand, her gaze tracked down the source of the noise which held the man’s attention. A transport? Perhaps things were about to get more interesting.

Silently she watched the people around her, it wasn't much of a particularly eventful morning. Everyone was just going about their own business, getting ready for the torturous training ahead of them. Lynx was just standing there, idly, staring into the distance. Although the look on her face may have been somewhat dreamy, she was more than sunk into her thoughts. She was trying to asses the people around her. Lynx had started to think of them as such, like herself, they must have had a reason as to why they were in here. She wasn't in any way, shape or form to judge any of them, for all she knew, they had their own rational motives.

She didn't know much about them, their names and the little tit bits she snapped up here and there was all she knew of them. Lynx hadn't even tried to talk to any of them, she wasn't afraid of them. So what was holding her back? Whenever anyone had bothered to speak to her, all they could do is look anywhere else but her face, Lynx had accepted it a long time ago, now why was it so difficult for others. See beyond that mask, I guess that's just too much asked for, from anyone - be it convicts or not, she shook her head slightly, taking a few steps back she leaned herself up against a wall, arms crossed.

A certain growl, let off from her stomach region reminded her indiscreetly, she was starving. Ah, those bars, I know we're convicts but that isn't even food. It's the closest you can get to processed shit, she snarled, Lynx hated it. They were feeding them those inedible, tasteless bricks for the past few weeks now, yet no one had keeled over, which was more than a surprise to her. Tapping her boots, an old habit, she was getting increasingly impatient, where was the food anyways?

It hadn't been long after and the guard had walked in with a handful of their breakfast. He was handing them out, some just snatched them out of his hands, a little concerned she swiftly walked over. She wasn't planning on going without breakfast, it was all they were given, might as well make the most of it. Taking one of the left over bars, Lynx walked back to her wall. Opening up the wrapper, she ate it all in a few bites. She could do with a good old fashioned coffee, she was feeling more than exhausted. The past few days had been a grueling task, a little sore she could feel her muscles tense up just by the thought of having to deal with it again today, tomorrow, and the day after ...

Sighing, she clenched the wrapper in one hand, her eyes doing their usual bit, watching the people around her. Leaning up against the wall, she could feel some sort of vibration coming from somewhere close by. Lynx' head had turned instinctively towards the source, twitching a little nervously, she bit down on her bottom lip. Am sure there wasn't going to be another shipment for at least a whole month.

Cross watched as the convicts woke and began collecting their food. Having fallen in line, he gave the guard an amused smirk when he received his ration bar. Nasty pseudo cardboard in a wrapper. But it was edible, mostly, and they would survive on it. Hopefully. He stalked off to his own spot of privacy, tearing the bar apart and eating, ignoring the lack of real taste. It was something he forced himself to get used to. Convicts didn't get real food it seemed. Just this pseudo junk that they try and pass off as food. He mentally laughed at the label of the bar. Bacons, eggs, and hash browns? Please, it had the consistency of, well, he wasn't sure. But it wasn't food. It was processed to keep them alive long enough to die for the very same society that incarcerated them.

Ironic, that. Cross just shook his head slightly at those internal thoughts. He had wrapped up the pseudo bar in very short order, and watched as they brought the metal cylinder in, and their treat announced. Real, hot coffee? What was about to go wrong? No one gave the convicts anything without preparing to do something that even they wouldn't be ready for. He didn't trust it for a second. Besides that, he never drank coffee. Even in the civilian market, coffee did not sit well with him. Which means he highly doubted the coffee they foisted off here would be any better.

He observed the one girl snatch the two bars from the Provost, giving a remark that he found amusing, though he didn't show it, and striding off to the arguing couple. This should be good, and he watched her promptly hand off the bars to their two recipients. He mentally marked the couple, as he would refer to them when they were together now, for future watch. Who knows what kind of use they could have. He wouldn't approach them, of course, he would let them finish their bickering over whatever.

The woman was trying to make peace before the infighting started, it was almost inevitable in his eyes. Things would go south, in one shape, form, or way, and he wanted to know who would do what when it did. She was disrupting the focus of the giant, which was on outside. He didn't turn his head towards the noise. It was what sounded like a ship had arrived. Why it was here was beyond him. Carrying orders perhaps, or bad news. But they went hand in hand, so that was nothing new.

Finally turning his attention to the doors, he waited for whatever was going to arrive, to arrive. They wouldn't be waiting here all day, after all. That would be too easy and maddening at the same time. He didn't give the Provosts any thought, neither of them. They were the major's tools at best. At worst, they were just pawns corrupted by the addicting lure of power. Besides, they wouldn't be dealing with any of these convicts once the suicide mission was finished. But that was that, for now he would wait and see what happened.

Re: The Lucky 13 chapter 3

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby Kohananinja on Tue Apr 19, 2011 6:45 pm

Mornings sucked, and Charlie desperately wanted coffee. Well, perhaps mornings weren’t the right term, with this planet’s messed up time zones, but it was a general rule amongst the inmates that noon talked to Charlie until after she’d had coffee and finished their run unless they wanted their heads bit off. This entire planet in general just made her cranky, being the polar opposite to Jukau Gamma. And while she wasn’t planning a return trip to the decommissioned icy hell of a planet, cold she could at least handle. Ywan, a mostly urban metal infested planet, had also been known for constant cold and rainy weather, so Charlie had always been used to colder climates. This heat however, she was not, and it was making her a little bit more than grumpy.

Charlie was always one of the first ones up, ensuring plenty of cold water for a quick shower that acted, if only for a short time, as a light shield against the heat during the “morning” run. Once she had finished, she quickly dressed in pants and a tank top with her second hand army issued combat boots, before tying her dark hair back into a ponytail. As of late though, her motivation in getting up early was from the meds. After the spider fiasco they’d run into the other day, Charlie had been left with a particularly nasty spider bite on her neck. The poison had spread rather quickly, and caused some muscle and nerve damage on her left shoulder, but the doctors seemed to think it wasn’t anything permanent. They’d given her some kind of med she could only assume was an enhanced pain killer, and had been full of restless energy, and not been sleeping well ever since. She’d also had to pick up meds of a certain kind for another one of the inmates, which was how she found herself walking back towards their sleeping quarters with former Private Katrina Watson.

If Charlie was being honest, she wasn’t overly fond of any of the new recruits; a pack of murderers and crazies the lot of them, and from personal experience she knew you couldn’t trust most of them with even a slim chance to stab you in the back, especially the crazies. Those kind had always made her nervous. Katrina was no different, and though she did feel a certain sympathy for the woman, Charlie wouldn’t feel comfortable around her without the pack of sedative shots she kept in her pack. Call Charlie what you will, but no one could ever accuse her of being unprepared.

The walk back had been rather quiet, which was no real surprise as Katrina rarely talked at all, which was fine by Charlie. She mostly kept to herself with this lot, and of those there, she trusted the Major, comfortable enough with Inali, and would on occasion try to strike up mild conversation with Alistair, though she far from trusted him, and wouldn’t be cot alone with him for anything. She remembered the last words the old Alistair had said to her, and she was smart enough to know that man didn’t bluff when it came to that particular hobby. Still, it didn’t seem right to alienate the man for crime he had no knowledge about, this is if this amnesia bit was an act, so she took strides to be cordial toward him, perhaps even friendly, though that might have been a bit of a stretch.

Charlie smelt the coffee before she saw it when she entered the building that served as their barracks. She released a small contented sign at the heavenly smell, remembering just how addicted she used to be to the stuff. “Tell me that’s real Morris and I may just have to kiss you.” Charlie quipped, rare for her, especially when directed towards the likes of Denis Morris. Something about a guy who gets their jollies from being the cause of misery for others tended to put her hackles on the rise. But even so, he was better than a good deal of the provosts on this miserably planet, and he at least seemed to prefer his sexual favors willing instead of coerced. She remembered that bastard Davies and the looks he’d used to give her here. Inali too, but she was spoken for as the Major’s whore, and therefore off limits, which put her on the front line for the little man’s sexual frustrations. Mostly he’d just assign her extra running or punishments, but sometimes he’d be sure to hit her with his whip, despite the fact she was one of the ones leading the pack on runs, and she got a distinct feeling that made her skin crawl that he got a thrill from watching her bleed. He was still alive too, though after the spider attack he’d been hurt pretty bad. She hadn’t thought to look up on the little bastard was doing, and she didn’t plan on doing so ever. To be completely honest, she just didn’t care, and that indifference was starting to scare what was left of the old Charlie, the mellow, jokester, mechanic from Yuwan, still left inside her, however little that might be.

Something was definitely amiss; the shuttle’s arrival had the army ants mobilizing quickly. Eleven armed and armored men trotted hurriedly towards the bunkhouse. There would be no impromptu escape attempts performed at this time with or without cashing in on Inali’s offer. The stolen glimpse of a man dressed in a red trimmed, blue uniform waving the Major aboard attracted his curiosity. Dignitaries?” Alistair thought as Rogers approached the ramp that extended from the gunmetal gray hull. “But what did it mean? It wasn’t like high ranking officials to show up unannounced, especially here. He didn’t like this; he didn’t like this at all.”

“Delicious and nutritious. Tastes just like sawdust.”

The small voice pierced his solitude of thought disrupting his focus waving the ration bar in front of his face. Instantly the big man’s massive bear-like paw lashed out grasping the slender wrist of the unsuspecting server. The long razor sharp talons that adorned the long thick fingers dug into the soft tender copper toned flesh holding it in place. His upper lip curled in displeasure revealing a jagged row of pointed teeth behind the crooked curtain.

Perhaps, it had been a result of the absence of regular feastings in recent months that heightened his arousal upon this occasion. The flood gates opened and he began to feel the uncontrollable urge to satisfy his sadistic desires. He was a man of extravagant tastes and pleasures and many of the new inmate additions scarcely enticed his palette. How had he not noticed this before? Had the beast returned?

“I’ll bet you don’t.” Alistair stressed in a dry bone chilling reply behind a sly grin.

Alistair inhaled deeply savoring the fresh sweet aroma of the ensnared inmate emanated as he dragged her near. He could feel his heartbeat race slightly as he inspected the raven black haired beauty peering deep into her honey-brown almond shaped eyes trying to discern her purpose. It had been some time since the carnivorous giant had been stimulated in such a manner by the mere presence of an individual. Not since his encounter with the late Doctor Bolivar back on Jakau Gamma had the sensation hit him so powerfully.

“Release her convict. We don’t want any unnecessary trouble today.”

The familiar irritation of a Mark V pulse pistol pushed into his spine nudged him to comply quickly with the Lieutenant’s request. Alistair fired a quick glance over his shoulder noting the two provosts with a steady bead upon him as well before fixating upon his quarry once more.

“Didn’t anyone inform this one about teasing the animals, especially at feeding time?” Alistair mocked.

Bringing her hand to his mouth roughly snatching the dry wrapped biscuit in his teeth. Playful as he would like to be time was running out. Further resistance at this point would prove futile and he reluctantly released his vise-like grip upon his recent catch as Commissar Fredrickson and his armed entourage entered the bunkhouse.
“You know anything about this little one?” Alistair inquired indignantly of Inali in light of the impromptu military parade trying to shift the focus of his own actions.

Natalia’s mood went from jovial to terrified in the blink of an eye.

Her gaze had turned out the window to see what the Giant, Alistair, had been so intently gazing upon and before she knew it her wrist was seized. Clasped in the man’s vice-like grip before she could even flinch or react.

Turning her head slowly, she settled her light brown eyes upon him as he spoke, a chilling response issued from a grinning mouth set over filed down teeth.

“I’ll bet you don’t.”

Perfect. She had wanted drama, something to entertain herself but this wasn’t exactly what she had in mind. Perhaps it was simply naĂŻvetĂ© or perhaps it was her belief that all people were inherently good that had led her to tease the mammoth man. Now she definitely regretted it.

A quick inhalation to steady her nerves as her heart beat rapidly in her throat. Could he sense her reaction? Fight or flight syndrome should have kicked in and yet here she was, a captive participant in the odd little scenario. Too terrified to move, she berated herself mentally for freezing instead of whipping her hand back out of his grasp but for some reason she thought that he might enjoy that reaction. He looked like a man that enjoyed a bit of a fight for his food.

“Release her convict. We don’t want any unnecessary trouble today.”

So she remained still, praying that Alistair would listen to the Lieutenant before she did anything else that was idiotic and her gaze flashed quickly to Inali, the only other convict in her line of vision. Would she help or was she getting a kick out of this?

“Didn’t anyone inform this one about teasing the animals, especially at feeding time?”

His mouth drew closer to her and a quick snap of his teeth had her making her first movement, a quick jerk of her wrist as if she was scared that she would get bitten but instead he clasped his bite onto the breakfast bar and released her hand. She drew her hand towards her body and took a step back but anger began to mix with her fear and she finally found her words.

“I would tell you exactly what I taste like but I assume we wouldn’t be referring to the word in the same context. Now would we?” A light scowl crossed her features as her sarcasm tainted her sentence and she rubbed at her wrist. Her attention was momentarily diverted as more people filed into the bunkhouse.

“By the way
I was warned about you, yes. I just decided to see for myself if the rumors were true.”

And what a dumb move that turned out to be
. she added, silently, to herself. Turning in a huff, she spun on her heel and walked back towards the center of the room, standing close to the only other male convict, the one with the bright blue eyes. The movement was without forethought but she knew that she wasn’t good in a fight (not without a gun) and especially not against the behemoth of a man they called Alistair. Perhaps this was her subconscious looking for some sort of protection and in her past, men were easily manipulated into protecting her if she played the part of the small helpless female.

Her eyes turned to the gaunt man, Jason, and she released a deep breath that she didn’t know she had been holding in. “Breakfast AND a show. I should get paid for this shit.” She murmured in a soft voice, wondering if this inmate had more of a sense of humor.

Though with the last reaction she had received, perhaps she should just keep to herself from now on.

Cross had his arms crossed now, watching the doors. The transport was irrelevant for the moment. He couldn't have gotten to it, overpowered the crew, and flew off before the Major and his Provosts stopped him. Besides that, he didn't know how to operate a transport vessel well enough to lift off and escape, let alone under fire and on a foreign planet. Besides that, they were expecting the prisoners to make a runner as soon as given the chance, so doing so would only walk right into whatever trap they had set up to get rid of the stupid runners. Besides that, nothing interesting had happened in the barracks.

That changed with the sudden commotion from where the couple had been talking. The young girl who had taken the food over to the two had gotten grabbed and was being scared out of her mind. He kept a neutral face while watching this. It wasn't his issue, not now, so he watched. Seemed she had managed to piss off the big guy, and he had a nasty look about his grin. He muttered to himself, not loud enough for anyone to hear of course. That would have been suicidal, so to speak. He would save the comments worth being heard for later. Besides that, he would let the security feel good about controlling the big monstrosity of a man.

The guards took no spare time in doing so, already having their weapons on the giant, and he watched all this with passive indifference. It wasn't his fight, after all, so he let it pan out how it would. Sure enough, he cast the girl off and he watched as she retorted, and fled back in his direction. And like that, he resumed talking to the woman near him that Cross had coupled with the giant. This, coupled with the arrival of the armed entourage rapidly struck down any real wants or needs to actually cause trouble and violence amongst each other. So the potential for having to defend himself was much lower than before, considering the direction the girl had came.

Cross smirked slightly at her comment about breakfast and show. She was close to becoming the breakfast and show. He had heard enough about the giant over there to avoid dealing with him whenever possible. She was lucky to have avoided the giant having gone and taken a bite out of her for good measure. He knew the warnings, having listened to the others being warned of the consequences of bothering the giant without good reason. Or, as it seemed for some, previous relations with the man and being, maybe not on the good side, but not actively aggravating the man. Which was safe enough way to deal with anyone, avoiding aggravating them. But he replied to the comment on breakfast and a show.

"You were close to being the breakfast, as well as putting on a show." It was all he said, and it was in a calm tone of voice, neutral as well.
