The Man Of The Mountain

The modest town of Whitefish had a quaint beauty about it, like the town had been plucked from a movie set or a story book. Of course modern times had caught up with the town as it tends to do. There was a small school and a collection of shops with a market every Sunday that local businesses could join and sell their wares. Down the many winding roads likes a smooth lake, with small rowboats painted bright colours by the local children. A tremendous green mountain encircles the town keeping it safe. With natural paths leading into the wooded area, although they were rarely used.

Of course the town has its stories and folk tales like any other town. Whitefish has its own take on this, known only as The Guardian or more commonly as The Man Of The Mountain. It has been told that there is a man, a being of sorts who can control the forest with a click of his fingers, walking with the animals as though they do not fear him. Any damage made to the forest is felt through him and it is healed. Any hunters or poachers that step into the forest without his permission are cast out violently weapons turns to dust, bodies marked with a symbol that fades over time. Teenagers dare each other to step into the forest and spend a night there. To try and get a glimpse of his human form in the forest, but it moves and scares many of them off.

His origin is unknown as well as his age and true name. Tales explain of him being the long descendant of Actaeon, the Greek god of the wilderness. He is rarely seen by people, but visits the town occasionally to tend to structural business of the houses as well as the large tree in the centre of the town adding flowers or charms to it. His appearance is often confusing, wearing clothes that are tattered and look they he crafted them out of moss and leaves, his dark hair entwined with feathers. Wearing a belt full of artefacts to old for the world as well as heavily ringed hands and more often than not an animal companion that is fiercely loyal. Some say The Guardian built the town hundreds of years ago using the strength of his own body to create wood and stone for the town to thrive and survive. His compassion for nature and animals grew the forest into a protective cucoon, with a variety of habitats for his animal friends.

Some of the townspeople respect the Guardian for his love of nature and all his has done for the town. Others think that he is a nuisance and a pest for not letting anybody into the forest without permission. A terrible mix of love and hate.

Of course tales have to start somewhere don’t they.
I love roleplaying, making new friends, 1x1 I love as well. I enjoy playing interesting character and I feel that communication is important as well. We can discuss ideas and get to know one an other.

Marie paused at the wheel of her small Toyota.
Taking a huge breath in, she looked outside her tinted window.

Ever since Kyle had left her, she had vowed to make a fresh start and do something that was just for herself. Admittedly, moving half way across the country was not one of her best ideas; but she was far too committed to her cause now.
Whitefish was a rather quaint town. Marie had always passionately wanted to live in a small town that runs into a beautiful forest so she could continue hiking with her new owned dog(He was named Rupert, like the bear).

Snapping back into reality, Marie looked towards her newly purchased house that she was parked outside of.
It was small.
It was dark.
It was a project.
She could not wait to get started.

Unbuckling her belt, she took a final deep breath in. As if by some chance of fate, her dreams of happiness were coming true- even after the heartbreak of being ditched by your partner to your ex best friend.

She opened the door and took a step onto the spring green grass.
A slobbering monster quickly followed in her steps and began sniffing frantically, his huge black mane strategically blowing against the light breeze.
He had been a panic buy when Marie was on her own. She wanted company and something to cuddle up to on the sofa on a cold night.
Instead she got Rupert, the boisterous newfoundland cross, who was now in his element and dashing madly round the surroundings of the house.

She guessed it was time to unlock the front door and wait for the removal van.

Stepping out of the forest, Arturo sighed softly. Taking in the fresh air of the morning he checked his small pouch of precious things to trade with, small gems, sculptures and bracelets. Simple things, Arturo had no concept of money and he and the townspeople had a understanding.

Adjusting his messy coat he looked behind him seeing a medium sized fox sitting at the path. Chuckling softly he jerked his head a little to get him to follow him.

Walking through the town it was rather quiet today that was until an egg came sailing towards his chest cracking on impact. The fox growled sharply and darted toward the culprit gripping him by the ankle gently enough to drag him out of hiding. It was a small boy. Arturo brow furrowed and approached the boy who was trying to get away. “ I’m sorry I was trying to hit my friend” A straight lie, there was no one there.

Arturo ringed hand clamped on the boys shoulder. His hand scooped up the remains of the egg, cupping his hand around it he blew gently a warmth spreading through body an orange light emmiting from his hands. Openings hand he revealed a baby chick “ Life should not be wasted, especially in front of somebody who gave your ancestors life” . Putting it in the hand of the boy he walked off. Pausing his movement he looked to the top of the hill, a new neighbour? Whitefish hadn’t had someone stay for so long..

Thinking back to the house, what road was it on again?. Three Pines Drive, that was it! George used to live there until he became too sick. Sighing he made his way up the hill slowly trying to get a glimpse of someone new, but he found a dog instead. A big dog! Some of the wolves were big but he was inpressed by the size of the furry dog. He couldn’t see the owner yet, he was sure they would meet soon enough. Scooping up some dirt from a nearby flowerpot, Arturo closed his eyes and squeezed energy into the soil. Bursting out a handful of red roses he scratched a simple note onto a slip of brown paper.

Welcome.

Moving slowly to the front door he left the flowers on the porch, heading slowly down the hill once more to see what he could gather for home. What did he need again?

He passed one of the townsfolk, Emma her name was. Giving her a nod she forced a polite smile onto her face as she made her way up to the new house. Knocking on the door she noticed the flowers on the porch she sighed at the guardians efforts to make nice so soon.

The one thing Marie could be sure of was that Rupert never ran too far from her. It was almost as if they had become kindred spirits.
She giggled softly to herself, realising how silly that sounded as she checked her fitbit.
The moving van was still not here- so she had nothing to unpack. Luckily, she had her purse so she could take a wander into town to get some shopping.

Marie stepped towards her front door and was greeted with a knock.
Must be the movers... she thought as she grasped her around the gold plated door handle.

As she opened the door, a woman stood there. She looked shocked and surprised.
Marie's gaze was quickly taken by a gorgeous pot of red roses. A gift from this woman perhaps?

Emma Branford

Emma smiled as the door opened “ Hi! I’m Emma, I live down the hill. I also own the cafe in the middle of town” Emma’s eyes locked on the large dog “ oh my gosh! What a cute fluffy bear!” She smiled reaching out to pat the dog on the head.

“ do you want me to show you around? Help you pick up some things for your house. we could have a coffee or something while you wait for your movers. It’s a bit of a winding road a bit tricky sometimes obviously depending on a certain someone” she shrugged.

Glancing down to the roses she pointed “ those aren’t from me, just leave them out, he’ll get the idea”

Marie looked at Emma- though she seemed nice- there was something off about her. However, Rupert seemed to like her which was a positive sign.

Inquisitively, Marie looked back at the flowers and wondered who HE was and Emma was so concerned about him.
She decided to accept her offer of the town tour, so she could find out more.

Emma Branford

Image

Emma smiled and started to walk down, gesturing to the left of her. “ if you go down that way that leads to the Hanford’s, that’s a section of stores that specialise in fabrics and wood furniture stuff there also a great place to get a good bit of booze if your into that sort of thing” they continued to walk down the hill until a tall white marble building came into view, in laid into the coloums of marble were deep wood carvings. Animals, flowers and mountains. Some with polished stones for eyes.

Passing the town hall Emma stopped “ this is the town hall, we hold meetings every month, you don’t have to attend if you don’t want to, we also have game nights and book clubs.” She explained waving to one of her friends as they walked.

As they came to the centre of the town a large oak tree stood in the middle of the square, again lined with carvings and stones, the branches spreading out with lanterns and trinkets hanging down, shops lining the streets, some with tables outside overspilling the stock. Small carvings on the wooden supports of the buildings although some looked like they had been chilled off.

“ this is the town square, my shop is just at the corner. If you go to the left you head all the way to the lake, but in the square is essentials, food, books, clothes oh shit I thought he’d gone back” she muttered “ cmon I’ll explain as much as I can” motioning for her to follow looking at the fox sitting patently outside the food store.

Image

Arturo had gathered a majority of his supplies, some strings, seeds, crackers ( he really enjoyed those) as well as some dried meat. It took a while but he managed to trade some bracelets and carvings for his food. At least there were some understanding people around.

Heading out he walked back with the fox in tow passing Emma’s coffee shop hardly noticing she was there.

Image

Pointing at the guardian Emma spoke “ that’s the guy who left you the flowers, he is nothing but trouble. He is a nuisance and a vandal. Just because he can do a few tricks with animals and plants”

Hesitantly, Marie followed after Emma, whistling for Rupert to follow.
As the pair made it into town, Marie noticed many magnificent carvings of small animals dotted along the road, which were very sweet.

Once into town, Emma pointed out various shops and craft stores- including a quick mention of town hall.
The town was seriously quaint, and Marie knew she was most likely going to love it here. Maybe her funny feeling with Emma had been down to a lack of trust? After all Marie was a city girl at heart- and you can never trust anyone in the city.

' Oh, you own your own shop? That's pretty amazing- I can't even make a sandwich without causing myself some damage! Marie chuckled, as Emma told her about her store.
Rupert was obediently following them both, making sure to sniff at every given opportunity.

However, the mood instantly changed as Emma nodded towards an oddly placed fox.
She was acting as if it were a human- which was about as odd as the fact there was a fox sitting around in broad daylight.

Just as Marie was about to ask about the fox, a man exited the shop the red fox sat outside of.
He was tall and well built with an heir of assertion and power (but not in a negative way).
It was pretty amazing he was able to control a fox- but Emma had made it seem as if it wasn't magical at all.
Plus, he was the one to leave flowers at Marie's house.
It would be rude not to thank him- And seemingly, Rupert was already on his way over to do so.

' Rupe- here boy! Come back! Marie yelled and she apologised to Emma and ran after her big bear of a pooch.

Arturo fiddled with the rings on his fingers as he thought about his day, he could do some fishing, some repairs on his home had to happen. His thoughts were halted by the sound of someone calling.

”Come back”

Arturo paused briefly, his head turned to look down at the huge dog below him. Raising his hand a little he watched as the dog sat obediently. Crouching down he stroked the dog fur, his fingers easing out the tangles and knots sticking the fur in a little bag. The birds and mice would appreciate it.

“ this is a very nice dog. You have found yourself a good companion here. Currently much better than Andrew here” he smiled patting the fox on the head who bit him playfully. Standing up he extended his hand to her for a firm shake. “ it’s nice to meet you. my name is Arturo. We haven’t had anyone stay for so long. Your in George’s old house... good man, really proud of his garden. Although I helped him with it in his later years” he smiled . Thinking of fond memories of the old man.

Marie ran as fast as her feet could carry her, in order to catch Rupert. However, he stopped obediently at the man Marie had wanted to thank.
She cast her eyes upon him- he was tall and rugged- rather attractive.
He had the faintest aura of honeysuckle and lavender with an earthy undertone.

All Marie knew was that she had taken an instant liking to him.

Arturo was his name- and he began to tell her of the man who used to live in her home.
Weird. Marie had gotten the impression from Emma that nobody in town like this man.
He made reference to the fox that sat by the shop door.

[b' Pleased to meet you- my name is Marie- and this is Rupert. I am so sorry he ran at you. I am surprised he isn't chasing your little friend here... Is he friendly?'Marie asked.
She wanted so very desperately to pet the creature- but knew netter than to just randomly stroke a strangers pet.

Arturo broke into a smile as the woman introduced herself, his hand passing on a small amount of warmth to her. She had a quaint beauty about her which he liked. “ it’s great to meet the pair of you”

Looking down at the fox he spoke “ he is friendly to the right people, most of my animals companions are very faithful to me. I keep them safe from harm, so in that sense I have earned their trust and friendship over the years, even raising most of them. You can pat his head, he likes his ears scratched” nodding the the fox, the animal slowly padded forward and sat in front of Marie for attention.

Arturo continued to speak “ if you need anything, any help at all. I beseech you to come to me. I can do what I can.” He paused to lean in and whisper gently “ don’t believe what some of the people in the town say, disbelief at its finest I assure you”

Marie placed a gentle hand onto the Fox's head. He was softer than she imagined and a lot friendlier.
Bending down to his level, she looked into his wide hazel ideas.
Like an old mage, there was wisdom- stories of things untold. Or at least that was what Marie imagined.

Bringing herself back up she turned her attention back to Aturo.
[b]' I call them as I see them- So don't worry- rumours are just rumours.'
She smiled warmly at him as Rupe sat by her legs.

The fox pushed his head up at the affection sniffing Marie’s hands intently ,trying to take in all of the new smells all at once. Making a small coeing noise he retreated back to Arturo’s legs to sit down next to him again.

Arturo smiled at her comment he held up one of his ringed hands, ranging from plain brass with small details carved into the metal to intricate gold and silver bands with gems and stones inbedded in them. “ a majority of these are rumours, if you choose to stay for longer, I might tell you some tall tales of my own” he chuckled a little, looking at the fox at his feet he jerked his head “ c’mon Andrew. Home, your wife will kill me if your too long in the town. Marie, Rupert it was a pleasure to meet you. Welcome to the town” he bowed his head a little and turned to head to the forest the fox bouncing ahead a little every now and then Arturo would stop and pick things up from the floor before disappearing out of view entirely.

Emma watched the exchange between the two, playing it out all friendly and weird. As he left Emma approached Marie “ see what I mean, he is very strange. Being all nice with his weird pets, but he doesn’t let us into the forest without his permission”

Marie giggled a little as the man made jokes to the Fox, as if it understood him.
She had to admit it did seem like he could talk to animals- but that couldn't possibly be.... science disproved anything like that.

Emma brought Marie back to reality as she watched him walk away. It was like a black cloud on a rainy day. Here Marie was, admiring this magical man- and Emma rained torrentially on her joy.

[b]' He most certainly is strange- but I doubt he could really keep you out if the forest... he isn't exactly the nature police' Marie scoffed.
Though her joke didn't look like it had landed well with Emma.

Emma raises her eyebrows and shook her head “ about two years ago some hunters went into the forest to get rabbit and deer pelts. They asked the so called ‘ Man Of the mountain’ he replied saying not but supplied them with some stones that were of some value.” She paused to put her hands in her pocket as a chill washed over her.

“ so the hunters entered, they was in for about two minutes until one was pushed out of the forest with burns on him but no signs of fire . The other came running out screaming about a green bear that ripped his clothes. The local doctor said it was some kind of hallucination from mushrooms. But everyone knows it was him. You can write a letter to him to either talk or ask permission or even meet up with him, it rarely happens” she explained.

The story that Emma was telling sounded like some elaborate fantasy. It seemed that the people in this town really didn't want anyone to know about the man in the mountain.

Marie decided to play along, if only to keep her neighbour happy.
Turning to Rupert, in her most serious tone, she said
' Now pooch, don't you go wandering in the forest to chase any rabbits!'

Rupe stared at Marie, clearly understanding the game.
She then turned back to Emma ' Thanks for warning me Emma- I wouldn't want to get involved with the wrong sort- I am a city girl and I need guided in the right direction from time to time '.

Emma watched as Marie warned her dog but also mentioned her thanks for the warning.

Emma shrugged and nodded “ it’s not a problem, it’s just people he is funny with, animals can come and go. look I’ve gotta get back to do stock check. But drop by anytime for a coffee.” She gestured back to her store and started to head back, giving a small wave. Confident that she had prevented any danger coming to Marie.

Marie waved goodbye to Emma and began making her way home.
What on odd first time in her new town.

Truth be told, the movers would probably be there now, so she gently jogged towards her home.
As she approached her home, she saw a van drive away- boxes piled on her decking.
Crap! She thought. Just missed them.

Arturo had made it back in time to start some of the odd jobs around the forest, make sure the streams were running okay, do a perimeter check for litter and sharp object. Give out dried leaves and fur to the smaller nesting families as well as put on a pot of stew for later, he reached the edge of the forest that backed onto George’s garden which was now Marie’s home.

Whistling into his hands a young crow appeared less than a minute later “ her there okay?” He gave the pei e of paper to the bird to hold and pointed over to Marie who was moving things in and out of her home. The crow cawed gently nudging Arturo’s hand for a worm first which Arturo pulled out of his pocket and showed the creature “ After... now go” The crow took flight and landed on the porch cawing loudly to get her attention.

Need some help?

Arturo waited in the tree line resting against a tree that inched up a little higher off the ground in his presence.

Marie began picking up her boxes, Rupert was no help- he just poked his huge head into boxes that he assumed were his.
Softly, Marie scolded him and he ran to the back of the house.
After two or three boxes, a crow sat on her porch fence. It cawed loudly, as if it wanted her attention.
