Thought experiment: Nationalism

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby ElizabethQuirk on Fri Apr 13, 2018 9:20 pm

In this experiment, nationalism has been implemented around the world. The leaders of every nation have done everything they could to remove immigrants, and popularize notions that immigrants pose some kind of threat to the nations. You have heard that in other parts of the world which have allowed more immigrants, and allowed immigrants to retain parts of their cultures that are important to them, dangerous activities have become more prevalent - but you personally have long lost contact with anyone you knew in those parts of the world, so you don't really know for sure what is going on over there. Many people have conflicting narratives about what is really going on, but some simply have very little idea about what is true or false about almost any topic.

Some kind of disaster - or maybe multiple kinds of disaster - disrupted just about everything in your area. The last you heard, a world war was potentially breaking out, and there were concerns that the ocean conveyor belt was about to stop, causing flooding in the northeast of North America, a pullback of the ocean in Europe, and unfortunate weather events that could cause various degrees of disaster around the world. You don't know exactly what happened, but you heard horrific sounds last night, and discovered that you didn't have electricity or any way to communicate with the world at large. You realized it was safest to stay where you were at least while it was still dark, so you did so. Today you see flooding, downed trees, and damages to buildings. You see what looks like military personnel coming. They are still far in the distance, so you don't know if they are from your country, and even if they are, you're not so sure that they have good intentions with you. If you happen to have weapons, it is immediately obvious to you that you are out-gunned by the military.

You have whatever amount of food, water, and other supplies that you actually have in real life right now.

What do you do and why?

A greater number of people means a greater chance of survival. I would try as best I can to avoid conflict, even if it means surrendering.
