Hellhound
Classification: Hostile
The Hellhounds appeared early on, by some accounts within the first few hours of the Sunset. They are unusual among hellborne creatures in that their sole reason for existence appears to be hunting and killing humans. Whether this is because of some perceived instinctual predator-prey relationship is unknown, but surviving Hellhound attacks was one of the defining early experiences of many people during the early days of Pandaemonium. The powerful senses of Hellhounds and their driving hostility towards humans and mutants means that they have very seldom been observed not engaged in the hunt. Fortunately, aside from their frightening appearance, ferocity and near-invisibility in low-light conditions, they are not extremely dangerous foes for a competent and able-bodied human. Unlike wolves, they often attack alone, and usually in an extremely predictable manner; namely, charging at their target and leaping in order to attempt to seize the throat.
The Hellhound's size varies heavily. Weaker examples can be similar in size to a common fox, with appropriate levels of strength, while rarer large examples have been observed almost standing five foot at the shoulder. Larger Hellhounds appear to be not only stronger and more ferocious, but also more intelligent and capable of using sophisticated hunting tactics. The most distinctive aspect of a Hellhound's appearance is their pigmentation: they are completely black, from every inch of their fur to their dull eyes to their claws, teeth and gums. Aside from this, they simply resemble wolves, aside from their proportionally longer legs and shorter snouts.
Hellhounds are also notable for their teeth: in the early days of Pandaemonium when they were among the greatest risks to the unprepared human populace, those who hunted them could exchange their extracted teeth for goods and services from other survivors. This practice persists to the current day, with Hellhound teeth acting as the de facto currency in many places across the Two Nations.
