And the Stars Revolted

Universe Padding

a part of “And the Stars Revolted”, a fictional universe by The Adversary.

You are a citizen on the planet Dahl's Cradle, a world on the border of alien space. At least.. you were. When a ship comes crashing through the atmosphere, you couldn't have imagined the cargo it carried. Or what had followed it.

Dahl's Cradle
Dahl's Cradle, second planet orbiting a yellow star called Rith Nli by the jin fo, is headed by a (relatively) small corporate conglomerate with centers of power seated in three cities on the planet's three continents. Utilizing the world's vast natural resources along with the star system's asteroid belt, the planet has a successful mining industry, which feeds into a powerful industrial sector that serves as the primary source of income from off world. As it stands, the majority of the world's workforce are employed either mining or in factories. The planet's not heavily polluted thanks to much cleaner processing. A large degree of which is done off world, as well. Roughly 30-35% of job opportunities are unrelated to the previously established two. There's a substantial well off middle class, people without jobs either choose not to work or can't - the former are nearly condemned and the latter provided for by the state. As it's a corporate planet, the very wealthy make the rules- and it can't be said that they're despotic.

As for culture, it's fairly multicultural; a melting pot planet. The most apparent in the mix are German, Chinese and Spanish. The planet itself is named after the benefactor who funded the colonization - as most human worlds founded these days are independent ventures. The actual company in control of Cradle is Van Zandt Group.

Mar Verde
Some two hundred ten lightyears from Earth, and the farthest ever explored by humans or jin fo, lies the planet Mar Verde. An unassociated world, this lonely little planet with distinctive green oceans is most famous for its vast wealth and it seat as one of the most powerful human worlds. Even more iconic is Strobe, the massive city orbiting the planet. Infamous and renowned for its booming economy, Strobe has been lauded and criticized as "all lights and music; decadent neon nihilism that seduces you into a drunken stupor and leaves a flimsy shell behind come dawn". The surfaces of the seven continents are dotted with small cities, all connected by expansive maglev rails cutting through verdant jungles and ancient forests. Four cities in total have been built atop the eponymous seas, extending below the surface for a glimpse at the aquatic alien life. The tourist business may be a thriving part of the planet's economy, but hardly the core- it's just why Mar Verde is so renowned. The real money comes from the nearby asteroid belt and uninhabited worlds and other planetoids. Lucrative mining corporations are dug in deep here, hauling out valuable minerals and metals.

Mar Verde is ruled by democratic process, presided over by a Premier atop the world's Parliament. A private navy and gendarmerie maintain peace and protect planetary interests, though it lacks the size and resources for any extrasolar campaigning.

Notable Starships

Solar Sloop
1 2 3 4

"IT'S SO FAST!" - J.R. Crenshaw, Weyland Foundry Test Pilot

Length: 53m

Its actual name- Weyland Foundry Glider- typically replaced with the much more generic "solar sloop" designation, this ship is well known for being highly versatile and strikingly fast. Its basic hull provides very little protection against nearly any weapon, and its shields are just as pitiful, but that hardly seems to matter when you can just leave anything remotely dangerous behind in the blink of an eye. Four low-yield (or "non-military") plasma cannons come standard, and the Glider's power supply can hardly support anything stronger. Because of wide usage by pirates, who eagerly adopted this vessel for its maneuverability and handling, Weyland Foundry came under immense pressure to remove JunTech Drives from all new models. All previously purchased ships were forcibly altered.

Earth Scraper
1 2 3

"A lot of people look up and see these things hanging overhead and don't think nothing of it. But honestly, they really and truly scare the hell out of me." - Unknown Source

Height: 5130m
Length: 1358m

By Sol's standards the Earth Scraper class is an unnecessarily huge behemoth from a time when mankind needed something so ridiculously large to aid in population management over new colonies. These gargantuan towers are so named for their usual emplacement: Right in high orbit over a planet, their jagged tips spearing down precipitously toward the world below. Fittingly, the very first of these was named God's Knife. Armed to the teeth with massively overpowered railguns, plasma cannons and particle directors, the Earth Scrapers also double as fortifications; the final and ultimate defense against any invading force. These days, most have been relegated to little more than flying cities, and even have been separated from their jump drives. Albeit, flying cities that can lay waste to a populated world in mere minutes. They're a common sight in human space, with most colonies possessing at least one.

Thao Toi
1 2 3 4

"It seems that right up until they met us, the jin fo had nothing in the way of a true combat ship. That changed fast, didn't it?" - Admiral Zhu Dahan, Solar Navy

Height: 563m
Length: 2414m

As jin fo technology goes, the Thao Toi (considered a battlecruiser by human naval experts) is both a remarkable specimen and an uncharacteristically fearsome design. Sleek, elegant and insurmountably lethal. With precision jump capabilities, strong armor plating, impressive shielding, plasma torpedo nodes, particle cannons and a massive e-war suite to boot. In the department of hardware, it easily outclasses even the most advanced warships of Sol. Not many of these exist, however. Only seven were ever manufactured, and it is unlikely many more will be in the foreseeable future.

Boneships

1 2 3

Length: 320-345m

"You know, ghosts are usually depicted as white. Ghosts are mysterious, eery and hard to see. So why the hell are these things called Bones?" - Cpt. Fred Hallam, Dynamite Shipping Inc.

Superstition never died, especially among sailors. Amidst the long, lonely voyages it's easy to let your mind wander or become entrapped by flights of fantasy. One of the most widely reported being the so named "Boneships". Ivory white, small and astoundingly fast. For a time there weren't even physical descriptions, just strange sensor readings and rogue blips. The popular theory is that they're piloted by aliens who wish to go unnoticed- scanning and observing humans and jin fo. Others believe they're literal "ghost ships", the dead lost in space to wander forever. Most chalk them up as just illusions and electronic anomalies, and are in no real hurry to try and prove whether or not they really exist.

**The classification "solar" denotes a vessel limited to travel within a solar system, conversely "extrasolar" applies to any vessel with jump capabilities.

Some general information, a bit of it cultural that relates to Dahl's Cradle along with other worlds. Info-dump: Incoming.

**

AIs are "born" with innate knowledge fitting whatever they were created to do. They learn much like humans do, experiencing new things and taking in new information. Albeit at an enormously faster rate. For some AIs having a humanoid personality is a choice they make, although how lifelike they are generally varies from model to model. Many are coded with "read and write" protocols, allowing them to learn and adjust the more they take in. This can result in alterations to their personality much the same way a human can grow as they experience new ideas and situations. On the matter of experiencing emotion, that is a choice as well- even when it's a part of their programming. In those cases a personality is not an imitation; for all intents and purposes they are as "human" as we are. The difference is that they are not ruled by their emotion, and easily differentiate between what is logical and what isn't. Finally: Android coverings. Depending on the model an android can either have fully organic skin covering them, simply be made to appear humanoid with well designed and painted carapace, or just go bare. Depending on the purpose, of course. Androids wearing a true skin sheath can allow their cover to regrow if they wish, though it will take time. Others will require repairs.

As for processing capabilities, androids can download information almost instantaneously depending on the size of the packet. However, this is somewhat of a risk. Even with their very large memory capacities, AIs still do not possess the storage space inherent in the human brain. Too much data too fast, or just in general, can cause them to degrade. This can ultimately result in "death" or, far more likely, insanity.

**

Personal transportation still exists, of course. There's ground, air and hybrid vehicles. They are only ever used planet-side; never on orbital cities or Earth Scrapers save by law enforcement. All are equipped for manual and automated piloted, depending on preference or situation.

As for entertainment, there's what's called "jacking" or "wire tripping". The use of amps to get an electronic high, basically. Experiencing massive surges of sensation via frequencies or codes to get certain responses from neural implants or exploiting these amps to basically play with electrical impulses in your brain. Other than that there's still movies being made. Music, too. Adult entertainment's thriving, as well, especially as societal taboos have decayed over the centuries. There are sports, as well. Both classics and some new ones. Most notably zero-g based competitive gaming.

Finally, there's societal issues. On Dahl's Cradle - at least - there's little classism. With such a large middle class to contrast the infinitesimal lower and upper classes there's not much room for it, really. Some prejudices, perhaps, but nothing very significant. Racism exists, but is extremely uncommon on most worlds. Androids are the subject of controversy, however. For as many people who see them as living beings, there's just as many arguing otherwise. Lastly, the subject of analogs versus digitals. While not a particularly widespread issue, there are plenty of elitists on either side who cause trouble.

To add to what was just said, as said in the intro page Vyras by large use little augmentation as they don't see it necessary considering their natural superiority. While there is exceptions, usually the most augments you'll see on a Vyras are the universally useful ones like personal HUDs and such or cosmetic augmentations. Some Vyras use no augments at all as a matter of racial pride, seeing such things deluding to what they are.

Will update this post periodically.

Vyras Info
One unique trait granted to the Vyras by their empathy the ability to communicate with others of their kind through feeling. Vyras are naturally resistant to their own emotion/sensory manipulative abities, a trait that strengthens with age, however they can still sense their fellows emotions to a fair degree and infact convey to eachother much by simply "feeling" at one enougher. Able to convey and understand emotion to a far greater degree to their human cousins or the Jin Fo.

Like the Jin Fo and their body language, the act of "feeling" is intrinsic to a Vyras's very life and way of being. Many vampires get frustrated that they are denied the ability to communicate this way to other species and often treat them -especially humans- like children needing to be spoken slowly too.
