This is not a complete list, but should cover most major regulations.
Curfew
- Students must be in their house common areas by 10:00pm and in their respective dormitories with lights out by 11:00pm.
- Students may not leave their house common areas until 6:00 a.m.
- Students shall not leave the grounds of Gaol Academy, except by express permission from Headmaster, if collected by a parent or guardian, or as part of a designated school trip or function.
- On weekends, 3rd-7th year students may enter Greenwood Township with a permission slip from a parent or guardian, provided they are not currently under disciplinary action. Students are free to travel to Greenwood between breakfast and curfew on Saturdays and Sundays. They may not leave Greenwood Township, except to return to Gaol.
- Students are forbidden from faculty areas. This includes the kitchen, faculty lounge, and offices, unless with the escort or written permission of a faculty member. This also includes classrooms when a class is not in session.
- Access to common rooms and dormitories is strictly controlled.
- Students may not enter the common rooms or dormitories of houses other than their own.
- Boys may not enter the girls' dormitories, and girls may not enter they boys' dormitories.
- Swimming in Greenwood Lake is prohibited without faculty supervision.
- Boating on the lake is prohibited without faculty permission.
- The school ruins are expressly forbidden to students without a faculty escort.
Uniform and Dress Code
- Students shall be in uniform when class is in session. This includes robes, jumper, shirt, tie, slacks/skirt, shoes and socks, and gloves and scarf when necessary. All articles must be kept neat and tidy (i.e. shirt tucked in, tie worn properly, clothing washed and without excessive wrinkles).
- Casual wear is permitted when class is not in session. However, students are expected to keep their appearance neat and respectable.
- Except during dueling, magic may ONLY be used on inanimate objects.
- Dueling may only be performed on the dueling stage (in the club room), under the direct supervision of a faculty member.
- Students always have the right to use magic to defend themselves, or to respond to an emergency.
- Flying is only permitted outdoors.
- First years are only allowed to ride a broom on their own after successful completion of the Basic Flying training.
- Students must attend all classes and assemblies that they are scheduled for. Only written or verbal permission from a Professor or Head Nurse may excuse absenteeism.
- Students shall maintain decorum and good behaviour at all times.
- Alcohol and tobacco are strictly prohibited on Gaol grounds.
All rule-breaking can be met with disciplinary action. That said, minor infractions will often be overlooked. For example, a student using a Wand-Lighting Charm to read in a dark corner of the library isn't going to be disciplined for using magic in an inappropriate setting. Possible punishments may include:
Loss of House Points
- The most common form of discipline is the deduction of House Points.
- Usually no more than five or ten points is taken at a time for minor infractions. But more severe rule-breaking can see the loss of twenty, thirty, even fifty points. Usually anything that warrants such a drastic loss will also be accompanied by harsher punishments (see below).
- Detention can vary greatly in application. In some cases, a student will be assigned extra duties to assist a professor or other faculty member.
- Students with special privileges may find them suspended or revoked for severe rule-breaking. Examples of privileges that can be removed are: Greenwood Township weekend visits, club membership, or playing on the Quodpot team.
- Though rare, suspension from school can occur for violations that are severe, but not so severe as to warrant expulsion.
- A student will be expelled from Gaol Academy only under the most dire of circumstances, and only if they are deemed a danger to other students. This punishment is extremely rare.
