Image
This is not a complete list, but should cover most major regulations.

Image

Curfew
  • Students must be in their house common areas by 10:00pm and in their respective dormitories with lights out by 11:00pm.
  • Students may not leave their house common areas until 6:00 a.m.
Gaol Grounds
  • Students shall not leave the grounds of Gaol Academy, except by express permission from Headmaster, if collected by a parent or guardian, or as part of a designated school trip or function.
  • On weekends, 3rd-7th year students may enter Greenwood Township with a permission slip from a parent or guardian, provided they are not currently under disciplinary action. Students are free to travel to Greenwood between breakfast and curfew on Saturdays and Sundays. They may not leave Greenwood Township, except to return to Gaol.
Faculty Areas
  • Students are forbidden from faculty areas. This includes the kitchen, faculty lounge, and offices, unless with the escort or written permission of a faculty member. This also includes classrooms when a class is not in session.
House Areas
  • Access to common rooms and dormitories is strictly controlled.
  • Students may not enter the common rooms or dormitories of houses other than their own.
  • Boys may not enter the girls' dormitories, and girls may not enter they boys' dormitories.
Greenwood Lake
  • Swimming in Greenwood Lake is prohibited without faculty supervision.
  • Boating on the lake is prohibited without faculty permission.
Old School Ruins
  • The school ruins are expressly forbidden to students without a faculty escort.

Image

Uniform and Dress Code
  • Students shall be in uniform when class is in session. This includes robes, jumper, shirt, tie, slacks/skirt, shoes and socks, and gloves and scarf when necessary. All articles must be kept neat and tidy (i.e. shirt tucked in, tie worn properly, clothing washed and without excessive wrinkles).
  • Casual wear is permitted when class is not in session. However, students are expected to keep their appearance neat and respectable.
Magic
  • Except during dueling, magic may ONLY be used on inanimate objects.
  • Dueling may only be performed on the dueling stage (in the club room), under the direct supervision of a faculty member.
  • Students always have the right to use magic to defend themselves, or to respond to an emergency.
Flying
  • Flying is only permitted outdoors.
  • First years are only allowed to ride a broom on their own after successful completion of the Basic Flying training.
Attendance
  • Students must attend all classes and assemblies that they are scheduled for. Only written or verbal permission from a Professor or Head Nurse may excuse absenteeism.
Decorum and Behavior
  • Students shall maintain decorum and good behaviour at all times.
Alcohol and Tobacco
  • Alcohol and tobacco are strictly prohibited on Gaol grounds.

All rule-breaking can be met with disciplinary action. That said, minor infractions will often be overlooked. For example, a student using a Wand-Lighting Charm to read in a dark corner of the library isn't going to be disciplined for using magic in an inappropriate setting. Possible punishments may include:

Loss of House Points
  • The most common form of discipline is the deduction of House Points.
  • Usually no more than five or ten points is taken at a time for minor infractions. But more severe rule-breaking can see the loss of twenty, thirty, even fifty points. Usually anything that warrants such a drastic loss will also be accompanied by harsher punishments (see below).
Detention
  • Detention can vary greatly in application. In some cases, a student will be assigned extra duties to assist a professor or other faculty member.
Removal of Privileges
  • Students with special privileges may find them suspended or revoked for severe rule-breaking. Examples of privileges that can be removed are: Greenwood Township weekend visits, club membership, or playing on the Quodpot team.
Suspension
  • Though rare, suspension from school can occur for violations that are severe, but not so severe as to warrant expulsion.
Expulsion
  • A student will be expelled from Gaol Academy only under the most dire of circumstances, and only if they are deemed a danger to other students. This punishment is extremely rare.

These classes are to be taken by all first through fifth year students.

Transfiguration
In this class students will learn the art of changing of the form and appearance of an object.

Charms
This class teaches the art and principles of charmwork. This differs from Transfiguration in that a charm alters what an object does rather than what it is.

Potions
In this class, students learn the correct way to brew potions, following specific recipes and using various magical ingredients to create their potions, starting with simple ones first and moving to more advanced ones as they progress in knowledge.

History of Magic
The study of magical history.

Defence Against the Dark Arts
In this class, students will learn how to magically defend themselves against Dark Creatures, Dark Arts and against the other Charms.

Astronomy
In this class, students will learn the names of stars and constellations, of planets and their moons. They will study the motions of the stars and planets through the heavens and learn how to use telescopes, observe the night skies through them, and make labeled star charts.

Herbology
Students will learn to care for and utilize both magical and mundane plants and fungi, and learn about their magical properties, and what they are used for.

Beginning in their third year, students may choose three elective courses. Second year students may choose one. Basic Flying is the only elective course offered to First years.

Basic Flying (First years only)
This is a two-week crash course in flight. Passing this course is required for students to be allowed to fly on a broomstick while attending Gaol.

Ancient Runes
Ancient Runes is a mostly theoretical subject that studies the ancient runic scripts of magic.

Arithmancy
The study of the magical properties of numbers, including predicting the future with numbers and numerology.

Muggle Studies
This is the study of the daily lives of Muggles and how they cope with electricity and not magic. This class aims specifically to acquaint wizards and witches who do not have direct contact with Muggles with the way they live.

Care of Magical Creatures
In the class, students learn about a wide range of magical creatures, from flobberworms to Fire crabs, and even unicorns and thestrals. Students are taught about feeding, maintaining, breeding, and proper treatment of these various creatures.

Divination
This class teaches methods of divining the future, or gathering insights into future events, through various rituals and tools.

Apparition
This in an optional 12-week course offered to 6th and 7th year students who are at least 17 years old, in which they are taught by an official from the Department of Magical Transportation how to Apparate.

Alchemy
This class concerns the ancient science of Alchemy, the study of the four basic elements, as well as the study of the transmutation of substances.

An Ordinary Wizarding Level (often abbreviated O.W.L.) is a subject-specific test taken during a student's fifth year. The score made by a student on a particular O.W.L. determines whether or not he or she will be allowed to continue taking that subject in subsequent school years. If a student fails an O.W.L. and still wishes to retake it, they may be held back in that course to retake it with the students in the year below them.
Passing Scores
  • Outstanding (O)
  • Exceeds Expectations (E)
  • Acceptable (A)
Failing grades
  • Poor (P)
  • Dreadful (D)
  • Troll (T)

A Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test (often abbreviated N.E.W.T.) is a subject-specific exam that seventh year wizards and witches at Gaol Academy of Witchcraft and Wizardry take to help them pursue certain careers after their graduation. A student must have previously achieved an O.W.L. in the subject in order to move on to N.E.W.T.-level classes.
