A private roleplay between amyreinreaper and Kuroe

Introduction

Ocean’s Gate City, 2004
The SkyChild slowly floated down from the moonlit sky, its bloated figure like a dark spot upon the sky. Beneath it, the docks were well lit, and around them similar Zeppelins and the like filled the air, bobbing softly, their fabric-like skins whispering softly in the night. The SkyChild was high enough to escape the constant noise of the city, but the lights from the city obscured most of the stars. And still it drifted, down, down, as if both regretful of a journey’s end and expectant of the promise of its next adventure.

Miles Cruz stood near the side of the SkyChild's huge passenger and cargo areas, looking out from the bay as people exited and unloaded cargo with large baskets and lifts connected to pulley systems and ropes off the side of the titanic airship. Miles sighed. He might as. Well... "Enjoy" his time off the airship, or, as the other crew members liked to say to tease him, he would endure it.

Forgoing the baskets and large lifts, he backed up, checked to see if his backpack and and belongings were secure and in place, and ran towards the large opening. Nearly one hundred feet of empty air opened up beneath him, but he ignored it and kept his eyes on his goal; a large, metal cable used to secure the airship to the dock. In another situation, these wouldn't be needed, but there was some festival or other going on, and many more airships had been docked here. As a result, the SkyChild had been forced to stay aloft some distance. As it was, however, the cable was not one of hundreds that bound the SkyChild to the ground. A second later, as the cable was within reach of his outstretched hand, he extended a large, two-pronged hook from a contraption on his hand, used to hang onto wires on the outside of the airship. It also had a large knife, a reel of thin but strong cable used to swing and secure oneself to the outside of the airship when doing maintenance in flight, since it was retractable as well, and some other bits and bobs used to perform said maintenance. All were controlled by a small dial on the back of the contraption and a lever used by clenching and unclenching the hand upon which the glove-like tool sat on.

The hook screeched as Miles' weight began to drag him to the ground. Though he was being slowed by the makeshift zip-line, the rate at which he was accelerating would still be bad. He unclenched his hand, letting to of the contraption's lever. The hook snapped into its place between the knuckles of his forefinger/middle finger/ring finger. Or, it would have. As it was, he was raised the few inches it took, and the hook and the metal pieces that protected the first segment of his fingers gripped the cable. Fifty feet left. Fourty. Still too fast. Thirty. Slowing... Twenty five... Twenty. He gripped the lever again, and he dropped a few inches. Going faster. Fifteen. Ten. He reached up and grabbed the cable with his free hand, quickly lifting the hook from the cable. Then he let go with his other hand. He dropped the last seven feet or so, rolling on the concrete ground of the airship docks.

Miles ended up on his feet and brushed himself off. The ground. The feeling was so... Unwelcoming. It pushed back, as if it didn't want him to be there. He sighed, barely sparing glance at the people who seemed somewhat impressed by his little stunt, and ran over to where some of the crew members stood waving and laughing.

Darcy paced back and forth, attempting to pay attention to her grandfather's words. Knowing that they'd be somewhat of importance in just a few minutes. She intertwined the cord that ran from the small pod in her pocket to the large headphones that now hung around her neck. She had been dreading this day ever since her grandfather had told her what his plans were. That ship, that flying contraption brought nothing but horrifying, raging memories to her. But she wouldn't let her grandfather know that. After all, it's because of him that she has made it this far.

Her grandfather stops mid-sentence and glances up at her with a concerned gaze "Darcy...are you alright" Darcy quickly looks up, her electric blue eyes shifting around the room at the sound of his question. "Yes sir!" she answers as she stops her pacing and locks eyes with her, now, one and only family left. He smiles and stands up, then wraps her in a tight, heartwarming hug that only he knows how to give. It's a no brainner why the guys on the ships all admire and look up to him. He truly is an incredible person. That's why the feeling of dreading this task hurts Darcy in an odd way. She;d give anything to feel happiness for being able to someday take over what once belonged to her entire family and is now under her grandfather, Captain Luna's care. And as painful as it is to admit, she knows that her grandfather won't be around for much longer. But happiness is the last emotion on her list. If it even is included.

Her grandfather let's her go and gives her a pleasantly comforting smile. "I'm so proud of you Darce" he announces, and she gives him a weak smile. No matter how much she loathes that ship, she'll never let him know that. It would, with no doubt, break his heart. "Thanks grandpa" she adds, as convincing as she can manage to sound.

"Well, the crew's all waiting for us at the dock. Shall we get going?" and with that, they're off.

Miles stopped abruptly when he reached the large group of crewmen milling about on the ground a few whistled and laughed more.

“How’s th’ ground treatin’ ya, birdy? Couldn’t wait t’get down, eh?” one of them said. John Slater. He was a huge man with a great, black beard, always quick with a smile and a joke. Birdy was, in fact, a nickname he had gained by doing stunts like, say, zip-lining down a grounding cable. It was one of many, reserved for when he did things that most people would think to be idiotic.

“As fickle as a moody woman, Slater. First she drags you down and then she wants you back up again,” he replied, earning some grins and a chuckle.

“Well, you’re not really helpin’ yourself with those moody women. Let her tumble you good back there, you did,” came another call.

Miles looked through the men as they guffawed at the jab. “Stow it, Baker!” Miles yelled with a smile on his face, and tried to work his way through the crowd of people to hit the man. The men laughed and held them away from each other while they playfully struggled against the hands.

The crew of the SkyChild were a content and generally happy one. Working any position on the SkyChild was by no means a dead-end job, like some less reputable passenger airships were. In addition, they accepted former war veterans that knew their way around one of the great ships, as well some that were trying to save up enough money to go to a college, or to get into a school for flying or otherwise. Recommendations written by Captain Luna guaranteed entrance to nearly anywhere someone could ever need to go. Captain Luna himself was a fair man, who worked the men hard. Not only that, but he paid them well and gave them a number of reasons to do their work and like it. Mainly that it was better than some of the jobs that they could have been stuck with, and if they didn’t do their work then the ship would go down in the next voyage and they would all die. Working on an airship was not a job for the lazy or people who didn’t work well with others. Even Doctor von Thalberg and his assistant, known as Ms. Yuliana to the crew, were generally busy enough with injuries the crew regularly sustained on the ship. Mainly cuts and bruises, but occasionally there were broken bones and the like. Of course, Zuelinski was also the man who raised him, with Yuliana from when he was the age of five, and so Miles spoke like nobleman, since von Thalberg was actually the fourth son of a noble German family. This also meant that the somewhat serious von Thalberg had taught the young Miles German, Latin, and French as well. He spoke three of the languages generally with the perfect clarity of a politician.

Miles himself, when he was on land, had been mistaken for a young nobleman’s son that had run off with some hooligans multiple times, to which he responded with mild unease. His birth family had been fairly wealthy merchants for some time. Right now they lived in a large trading city in France, but he himself felt as though he held little or no real connection to them.

Still laughing, he disentangled himself from the knot of people, waving his hands. “I’ve had enough. I’m done, I’m done.” He said brightly. With the crewmen, he could forget momentarily the feeling of being landbound. “What are we all standing around for, anyways?”

Slater patted him on the back. “Slipped m’mind, Birdy. Y’were outside durin th’ announcement and didn’t hear the Cap’n. His granddaughter’s lookin at th’ship. She’s gonna be on it wit us for a few voyages fer when she takes over for th’ old man.”

Miles frowned. He hadn’t more than seen the captain’s granddaughter a few times. Captain Luna was like a father to him, and the majority of the crew, except for the older ones, thought of him the same way.

“Hey Cruz, Why don’t ya impress the lass for us? Jump offa the ship or somethin.” a man named Galvin yelled.

Miles cracked a smile. Slater laughed. “Galvin, sometimes ya do say somethin’ smart, don’tcha? What say you our Cruz does somethin’ ta impress th’ little lady?”

Cheers and laughs echoed out from the gathered men. Cruz rolled his eyes good naturedly. “If I have to, yeah, let’s go.”

As Darcy and her grandfather make their way to the dock where the crew is awaiting his return, a few things keep making their way through Darcy's mind. One, how is she going to keep up this sherade for much longer. Soon enough her grandfather will take notice that the thing she least wants to do is take over something that caused her so much pain. And him as well, but I guess that's what makes him somewhat invinsable. And two, what will this beloved crew of his think about her? Surely nothing pleasant.

Darcy's about to speak, but stops once her grandfather announces "Here we are!" With a big, proud smile on his face. She looks out at the dock and everyone that seems to be waiting for them. She's not quite sure of what to make of them. They're such a diverse group. So...different. perhaps she would fit in here.

They finally reach the crew, Darcy making sure that she has somewhat of a happy face on.
"Hello boys! I apologize for the delay. It had been quite some time since I last saw my little lady, and I wanted a few minutes to catch up." He studies the boy's expressions and chuckles. "And speaking of, here she is. Miss Darcy Arianna Luna"

Darcy gives the most sincere smile she can manage, somewhat of a shy, nervousness in it. Which she hopes that the crew doesn't catch on to. "Hello" she says simply and quietly. Her blue eyes lively with some exitement. Strange, but it felt good to meet new people. She didn't quite know what else to say to them, so she didn't say anything. Her headphones were still placed around her neck. For her, that was the simplest way she could show respect, of course they'd have no way of knowing that. All these years and Darcy had never met her grandfather's crew. Possibly spotted a couple of them every now and then when they came to town, but never once spoke to them. Although her grandfather always did speak greatly of them. 'The best crew God could have given me!' he'd say. Darcy wondered if they knew this.

"Alright crew, since we're all here let's..." Her grandfather takes a few seconds to look around the dock then directs his gaze back at the crew. "Where is Miles?" He questions bluntly.

“Miles, Cap’n?” one of the men said. “Well, the kids new. Where else is he gonna be?” The men all grinned and jostled each other, chuckling.

Miles fixed his goggles, keeping his feet planted on the swaying airship below him.

“Easy there, girl, easy…” he said quietly. A hawk soared above him, occasionally making swoops around him. The hawk was one that seemed to enjoy following the SkyChild, and appeared occasionally. It was a frequent roost for birds whenever it docked over cities, and the Hawk saw plenty of migrating birds if the season was right. Miles whistled to it. It replied with a screech and flew upwards. Miles smiled and turned the dial on the back of his hand. He drew out a line, thin as gossamer. It was strong, but thin enough that it neither weighed too much nor took up too much space if each crewman carried hundreds of feet of it. Miles had around two hundred fifty.

Unclipping a claw-like object from his belt, he attached it to the end of the line. It was something that he used frequently. Squeezing the lever on his hand as hard as possible for over ten seconds, or doing it five times in quick succession, while less pressure would being him to a stop, would send a small electric current through the wire and causing it to open up. Otherwise, it wouldn’t open up on matter what. It allowed him to do things like this with no one spotting him at the place where the line was attached to, though it was still dangerous.

He clipped the claw in place and opened his hand to let the lever go up completely, allowing the line to run freely. He grinned, and abruptly launched himself off the side of the SkyChild. Falling through the air, he was aware that the line was running and he was quickly gaining speed. He applied a bit of force to the lever, causing the line to catch a bit and keep his descent at a constant speed. Of course, he was still going down at about ten or fifteen feet every second, and the ground was coming closer far quicker than it probably should be. At about fourty feet, he applied a bit more pressure to the lever, slowing his descent to about five feet per second. Thirty five. Thirty. Twenty five. Twenty. Fifteen. Ten. He squeezed five times on the lever, and it gave a click the sound of line zipping back into it came as he began to fall. He hit the hard ground without rolling, just by bending his knees and going into a crouch. This time it was necessary, to avoid being whipped by the length of the line returning to his wrist.

"Well," he said, standing after the line had completely retracted. "That wasn't quite as fun as a free fall, but it was rather exhilarating."

Darcy watched the odd boy's dangerous stunt as he made his way down to the ground. She wonders if he's doing it for fun, or if it's some sort of scheme to try to impress her. If that's his pass time she has no right to judge him. After all, she is fairly strange herself. But on the other hand, if impressing her is what he's after then he's not going to get very far. She watches him land on the ground, with her eyebrows raised, then make his way back to the crew. She could only assume this is Miles. She did have to admit, however, that the fact that someone so young, or at least young looking, working on this ship with a crew of grown men was slightly impressive. At the very least, more impressive than his little stunt.

She watched him very carefully, trying to figure out exactly what kind of person this young man was. After all, she would be working with him soon enough. But besides his age and appearance, something made him different than the rest of the men standing behind her. She just couldn't out her finger on it. Her electric blue eyes, that now studied the large ship that the boy had come down from, seemed slightly unwelcoming. Not necessarily towards the boy. After all she knew nothing of him. But towards the so cald SkyChild.

"Ah, Miles!" her grandfather calls out for the boy to join them "Always thinking of new ways to possibly hurt yourself I see" her grandfather chuckles at the boy and flashes him a caring smile. "Come on over!"

The wide grin on Mile's face drooped a small bit as he felt the hard earth beneath his feet. It always felt as though it slowly stole something inside of him when he was on it. He resisted the urge to sigh and turned his gaze to Captain Luna.

"You know me, Captain. My apologies for the disturbance," he said with a slight bow. Another habit he had learned from the doctor.

Miles quickly walked to the group of crewmen, who clapped him on the back and grinned. Maybe they had managed to at least make his granddaughter a bit excited to be on the ship... Then again, she didn't seem too impressed. Instead, she had looked at him with an expression that clearly said "Really...?" and was now studying the SkyChild with a

He bit his lip. Hopefully that hadn't been a mistake, but he had a feeling in his gut that he hadn't managed to make the girl any more inclined to like the crew and ship.

"Ah, no need to apologize son, I know you all too well!" The captain says with a loud chuckle and pats the boy on the back. Then turns to Darcy with a grin "Darce, this is Miles, my favorite crew member" he says, chuckling even louder when the rest of the crew members shout out and groan in response to his comment. "Oh, i'm just pulling your legs!" he says with a wide smile that could light up an entire room.

"Miles, this is Darcy, my granddaughter" he pats Darcy on the back lightly. Darcy smiles shyly and extends his hand out for the boy to shake. Although his stunt earlier did nothing to impress her, it did raise her attention about the boy.

Her grandfather, the captain, looked out into the crowd of people and the festival evolving around them. "Well, we still have quite a bit of time until we depart" he then turns his attention to the youngsters "So why don't you two go explore the festival for a while and get to know each other" he looks at Darcy "after all, he's the one that will be explaining the ropes to you when i'm sort of time." he explains the news to the both of them at once.

A shrill whistle comes from one of the crew, Slater, with a slight smile on his face, as most of them began to disperse and go their separate ways.

"Captain, isn't that job left to one of the more... Senior shipman...?" He asked. He had served only fifteen real years on the ship, having started as a sort of cabin bit at the age young age of three. A job like showing someone how to handle the ship would normally be left to one of the two elder crew members- Heilter and Morris- both of whom had served nearly thirty years aboard the ship.

To tell the truth, he was reluctant to keep company when he was landbound. The people that lived on the ground... Rubbed him the wrong way occasionally. Never when he was in the air, of course, and he always acted with courtesy, but their habits, manner, and sometimes their actual fear of being in the sky he found extremely odd.

Still, this was a festival and it was Luna's granddaughter, so maybe it would be different.

"Perhaps, but I trust you Miles" the captain says proudly, then looks at Darcy inspecting her confused facial expression. "And I trust that you're the one person on the ship that Darcy would get along with the best" he turns to look at the boy and inspects him as well "after all, something tells me you two are very much alike" the captain looks at his grandaughter noticing that she's doing all but listening to the conversation and he chuckles lightly. "From what I've seen, neither of you mind wasting time daydreaming" he mumbles more to himself than to Miles.

Darcy can faintly hear her grandfather speaking in the background, but is completely focused on the SkyChild. Wondering what it will be like living up there instead of down here. Last time she has been on that contraption she was barely 8 years old, and now 10 years later and she never so muched as saw it this close in person. It looked intimidating, but not at all frightning. Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad, so long as she could get used to living in the air and keeping her memories locked up.

She studied every inch and detail of the mechanical bird, her eyes slightly lighting up at the thought of one day driving that thing. For some reason she suddenly felt excited, and anxious. Then caught herself and her face went blank. She caught the last words of the conversation and looked at the boy standing in front of her "It's alright" she says she says tightening her long, loose ponytail "I know how much of a burden it'd be to lug around someone you just met only because you have to" she flashes Miles a small, slightly fake smile and gives her grandfather a quick kiss on the cheek. "I can explore on my own. I promise I won't be late" and with that she gives a quick wave goodbye and walks off into the festival crowd.

Miles looked on, shrugging as Darcy Luna walked away. “She almost reminds me of someone else I know…” Miles mumbled.

“By your leave, sir. I’ve got nothing to do, so I’ll go and…” he sighed. Well, at least it would give him an excuse to run. Running at least made him feel like he wasn’t so connected to the ground. “I will be back later, sir.”

He broke into a run, going after Darcy luna before she disappeared into the crowd. Running around people and generally trying to avoid causing trouble, he tried to keep up. But, even with his dashing, he had to take detours and soon he couldn’t find her. Maybe he had passed her? Oh well… He shrugged. Not like it mattered much to him, he thought as the fact that he was landbound sunk in yet again and he felt a wave of melancholy hit him.

A group of three crewmen passed him, laughing at his slight predicament. "Running away already, is she? Great going, Cruz!" one yelled, laughing with the others. Miles smiled and flashed a gesture that he had most certainly not learned from the Doctor, sending them into another round of guffaws.

He kept walking, his smile slowly fading. It was an okay festival, but he really didn't know why it was happening in the first place...

"You look lonely" Darcy speaks from behind the boy. She barely noticed him passing by, noticing he looked a little uneasy. Perhaps she gave him the wrong idea. After all, it's not that she disliked him or anything, she just thought he wouldn't want to be stuck "babysitting" her, so to speak. At least that's what it seemed like to her.

"Sorry I ran off back there" she says twirling her long hair around her fingers. Her headphones hanging lazily around her neck. "But you really don't have to keep me company you know" her tone sounding plane and slightly dry. After all, being alone was nothing new to her. If anything, it was the only way she knew how to live now. Since her grandfather was always on a trip, she was always at the house alone. And she never got close enough to anyone to have any actual close friends. Maybe at the most, acquaintances. But she was fine with that. Not having anyone close to her meant not living with the constant fear of losing them. It just made things more simple.

She looks around the area, at the grand festival. The smiling faces, the smell of food. The sound of the festival floats. She had kind of missed that. She hadn't been to one in several years. She suddenly stops in her tracks to come to a realization. -Wait a sec...what is this festival even about??-

Miles swung around. So he had passed Darcy. Well, she at least seemed nice enough. Truth be told, he did want to get to know her better. She was, after all, the granddaughter of Captain Luna. If he knew anything about the old man, it was that he was an extremely interesting person. His granddaughter should have been no less interesting, right?

“It’s no trouble, I assure you, miss,” he said politely. “Festivals were never meant to be a thing to wander alone. I see no reason to not go with you.”

AS Miles looked around at the sounds and sights, he wondered at it. There were food vendors, people selling trinkets and whatnot, but he could not discern the meaning behind them. It was a festival, correct? It should at least have a reason… He was not sure he remembered being in the city at this time of year before, so…

“Mistress Luna,” he said, searching for a title or some such thing to call her. He couldn’t just keep calling her miss, and he didn’t know whether to call her Darcy yet. Still, he didn’t feel exactly right calling her Mistress either. “You live in the city, correct? What is the festival about? I haven’t seen it before…

Darcy slightly smiles at him. 'Mistress? Never heard that one before'. "Darcy's perfectly fine" she says still smiling, but her smile fades as soon as the question sinks in. She studies her surroundings and racks her brain for anything that she could remember about a festival this time of year, but she came up empty handed.

"To be honest Mister Cruz, I have no idea what it's about" she looks at him, her eyes slightly shameful. "Ever since..." she suddenly stops and corrects herself "It's been a while since I've been out walking about the city. Truthfully I would always rather stay home" she figured he wouldn't need, or want for that matter, to know the reasons as to why she accustomed[ to being on her own. But it didn't matter. She figured that no matter how much time she'd be around him up in the ship, he'd turn out to be just like everyone else. Just an acquaintance. Either way, he'd probably think her to be odd for wanting to stay home on her own while a festival is going on. But that wouldn't be anything new.

"I was actually hoping you knew, but I guess we're on the same boat" she says slightly amused. She looked around at all the people, and thought perhaps they should ask one of them about this festival. After all, they'd be staying here for a couple more hours. They should at least know what they are celebrating. She walked quietly next to the boy, unsure if she should tell him what she thinks they should do, and partly caught up in her own thoughts.

She remembered coming to festivals with her mom and dad and big brother, and she always loved it. To her it was the best gift her parents could give her. Going to the yearly festivals had become like a family tradition. They never missed one. Once her dad started training to take over the SkyChild, he'd miss some every now and then, but Darcy and her mom and brother still came. Specially when her dad was back in town. But ever since that terrifying day, she's never set foot in another festival or the SkyChild again. Until now that is.

Miles nodded. It was understandable, wanting to be alone. Darcy didn't look like a person who spent all their time alone, but he didn’t really know too many people who did that. On the SkyChild, the crew had to spend all their time with each other, so he’d never had much of a chance to do something like that either.

He stretched, his muscles already complaining to him. He wanted to do something… Jump, climb, tinker with mechanics, he didn’t really care. Still, there wasn’t much to do around here, so he decided to keep talking to Darcy. “If you don’t get out much, what do you do with your time anyways? “

Now that he thought about it, the idea of being landbound and having nothing to do seemed ghastly. He was pretty sure that he’d go crazy. He could be fairly calm for a while, but he got antsy after a while. With that, his hand went to his pocket and pulled out a little metal cube with various little mechanical pieces, a propeller, and some ring-like things sticking off of it. He proceeded to start disassembling it. It was, in fact, a little toy he’d made to keep himself occupied. It could be assembled to do anything he could make iit into, and it could be sometimes very useful, actually.

Darcy looks at him and slightly laughs. "You make it sound like I'm anti-social" she jokes. She looks about the area, studying the atmosphere. Maybe you could say she was a bit anti-social, because she would rather go out and explore remote parts of the city than to hang around town with her fellow neighbors. They always asked some kind of question about her or her family. It had gotten to the point where she just gave them all the same answer out of habit.
"I don't spend all my time at my house if that's what you're thinking"

she watches him play around with a small object he takes out of his pocket, noticing his feeling a little anxious. She guessed being land bound wasn't exactly his thing. But it made sense, for someone who spent 99% of their time up in the air. Even her grandfather sometimes acts slightly uncomfortable with being land bound when he comes to visit. But she couldn't imagine what it will be like to be trapped up in a ship for days on end.

"You know, being down here doesn't always have to be a bad thing" she says as she toys with her hair. She walks over to one of the street benders on her left handing him some coins in exchange for an apple. She takes a small bite and looks at the grandfather clock up ahead. A little less than an hour left in the city. "Come on" she says motioning for Miles to follow her then takes off running, weaving in and out of the crowded city streets.

"Down here? You mean landbound?' He asked. "It's... Not really something I especially enjoy, but you probably already got that part."

He started twisting apart the little body of the contraption itself. It went from a compact cube to a stretch of complicated bits and connecting rods. Miles sighed. He couldn't think of anything to build it into. Instead, he folded it up into its cube again and put it back into its place in his pocket. Checking his other pocket, he brought out a few coins he had thought to bring with him to the ground. His stomach growled.

"Well, its good to know that you don't spend all your time in your house. You know anywhere that I can find a place to eat?" he said, tossing a few coins around between his hands. "By the way, Darcy..." he added as a afterthought. "What do you think of the SkyChild so far?"

Darcy slows down realizing she's left Miles behind again. She looks around hoping she'll spot him trailing behind her, but no such luck. "Hmm..." she crosses her arms, contemplating on what to do. She finally decides to explore her surroundings a bit. After all, she hadn't been a a festival in years and Miles was bound to run into her eventually.

She looked around at all the food benders as she took small bites of her apple. She had still, some money left on her, but didn't want to spend it all at once. She looked up at the clock again. 30 minutes until they departed. She thought for a moment. Did she want to show him the one place where she truly felt peacfull? After all, she hardly knew this boy. still, something about him made her want to talk to him. Very strange for someone like her. She sighed and finally took off in the direction where she had left Miles.
