Piper had just finished buttoning her blouse, tying back her strawberry curls, and tucking her wireless communication device into her ear in preparation to report to her morning duties (running fifteen minutes early, of course) when she heard the knock. She wheeled herself to the panel on beside the exit and touched the central pad so that the door slid open with a smooth whisper.

"Chancellor Avalon," said Piper. She blinked, her soft, small mouth fixing in a little o. She didn't know who she expected to be knocking at her quarters, but she definitely did not expect him. Piper rarely had trouble communicating respectfully and confidently with her superiors, but Derrick's arrival caught her terribly off-guard. Not being able to see his eyes past his dark shades left her feeling unusually intimidated. "Oh--hello. Congratulations on your promotion. What can I do for you, sir?"

Her flustered, slightly star-struck mind spun through reasons why he could possibly be making a house call. Some information for interrogation related to one of the missions she'd been on comm? She had seen him rubbing shoulders with Lulu Botrelle (though Piper had seen a glimpse of what he had to do to Lulu in the name of duty) and Kora Norrevinter. Maybe something to do with one of them, since Piper was Commander Botrelle's glorified secretary, and Piper had gotten a front-row seat to the catastrophe of Norrevinter's operation against the Wanderer cell...

Her perceptive glance caught the wax seal on the note in his hand. It didn't look like any kind of official order. That was what digital communication was for. Paper was personal, or for formality, or fun, not function. She doubted it had anything to do with her.

Derrick's sunglasses stared down at the strawberry haired wheelchair bound woman. His breath caught in his throat as he studied her for a long uncomfortable moment. He couldn't do this, I mean really why did Nicola hate him so much for him to have to do this. Letting out a cough the newest Chancellor began to speak. "Uh hello Miss Kolert, thank you for the kind words. I have to congratulate you on your own promotion." He was pretty sure she was recently promoted.

Reaching up Derrick ran a hand through his hair taking the moment to try to stall. "Look I was wondering if you would be free to discuss a proposal I have." Fuck no that wasn't right. "I mean I was wondering if you were uhh free to...." This was hard Lulu and Kora usually dealt with the date set-up part.

Letting out a sigh Derrick removed his sunglasses pushing the darned things up onto his forehead. This gave Piper a rare front row view of his expressive icy-blue eyes that were clouded with doubt. "Is it alright if I call you Piper? I mean you are free to call me Derrick in return. I'm in a bit of a pickle and was wondering if you would be up for ice-cream or coffee to discuss a non work related matter. It will be my treat and if things go horrible wrong you will at least get some good ice-cream out of it."

He offered Piper a small shaky smile as he waited for her response. Okay so that was probably not the smoothest way to put things but hey it got the message through. Besides Kora and Lulu liked ice cream and treats so all girls should like that stuff. Piper was a girl so she must reasonably like that stuff as well, besides everyone liked ice cream.

Piper was looking at Derrick Avalon's actual eyes, an event with a rarity index ranking somewhere up with riding the Loch Ness Monster and giving Bigfoot a hug. And now he wanted to get on a first-name basis with her? This was getting weirder.

"Sure, Piper's fine," she said, smiling through her befuddlement. "Um--I have to get to work in a few minutes, but I get an hour at twelve thirty..."

If he was in a bit of a pickle involving a non work related matter, it had to be something about Lulu Botrelle. Maybe Lulu wasn't speaking to him after the incident and he wanted to make amends. If Commander Avalon--Derrick--thought that Piper had enough friendship or sway over her commanding officer, he was going to be sorely disappointed. Or--ah, and this seemed an even more likely possibility--maybe this had something to do with Carlos, a friend of Piper's, the good-looking technician who had just broken up with his boyfriend. Though Piper seemed a bit of an odd choice for a wingman.

Ping.
Piper's tablet, fixed to the arm of her chair, popped open a message from Commander Botrelle.

"Oh, actually," Piper said, skimming. "Commander Botrelle is in the field. I have a while now, if you want." She cleared her throat. "It's a bit early for ice cream, but I could go for coffee."

Derrick smoothly slipped back on his sunglasses right as the lights in the hallway starting flickering. The flickering may have happened around the same time Commander Botrelle's name was mentioned but that was probably a coincidence. Either way it was time for him to be in public, Chancellor Avalon mode, not I fucked up my life Derrick mode.

Putting on his fake charming I'm around a bunch of nobles smile Derrick looked down at Piper. "Coffee right now sounds good, I know a little place near the base we can go to." The words sounds kind and had the right hint of interest and excitement to them. If one listened closely or paid attention they'd notice a lack of warmth in his tone or words.

"Would you like my assistance in getting you there? I would be more than happy to push if you'd like me to. I know you can do it on your own but this is my treat after all, please allow me to pamper such a beautiful girl as yourself." Urgh, he hoped he wasn't laying on the charm too thick or to phony. He did care about Piper, and she was pretty, he guessed. However he had no feelings towards the woman other than the passing interest to not go to his own ball dateless.

Snapping out of his thoughts he waited for Piper's response pushing her if she allowed him to or walking by her side. Patiently falling into step with her as they went to the bistro. As they walked he made a bit of small talk with Piper. "So Piper, the weather has been very nice lately such beautiful sunsets and sunrises." As they walked he pointedly ignored any stares or mutterings. The rumor mill in Eurbesco was the worst and as the newest chancellor he was bound to get the worst of it.

Once inside he gave Piper another one of his highly practiced charming smiles. "Why don't you give me your order and I'll go grab it while you find us a nice table location."

After getting Piper's order and staring down a barista who he made darn sure knew how to correctly spell his and Piper's names. It was Derrick with two r's darn it! He made his way back to the table with their order.

"Here we go miss Kolert I hope the name spelled on your cup is correct and everything is right." Once again his glasses turned towards the barista, a glare surely underneath them at the slightest mistake. Before truing back to Piper with his charming smile that should really be trade marked. "About the item I wanted to discuss with you. Well I was wondering if you would not mind being my plus 1 at an upcoming event. I know this is rather sudden and that we do not know each other that well. However the superiors think you would be an excellent choice as a date and I agree. Out of all of the people suggested to me, your name stood out the most." He paused for a moment to let his words sink in.

"I know that this is quite sudden, so if you say no that is fine and understandable. However I am willing to offer a few more outings in the time leading up to the event so we can get to know each other a bit better." Hopefully she didn't want to spend more time with him. There was really only so long he could keep up the charming public charade. For fucks sake his job involved cutting people open and causing them the most pain possible. Also he was kinda an asshole and his life was a wreck so yeah, there was that.

Derrick kept up his smile as he waited for Piper's response, one thought running through his head. Lulu is going to kill me more for this.

“I’ve got it, thanks,” said Piper, pushing her own wheels in strong strokes, chuckling at his affected airs of gallantry, his abrupt turn from awkward to putting on a show—and Piper could tell it was a show, but she didn’t mind terribly; at least he was being friendly.

When he brought up the weather, she pleasantly agreed with him, commenting on the previous night’s pinkish glow while smiling at him sideways. What a classic way to delay the real topic of conversation.

But the real topic of conversation turned out to be very unexpected. He certainly got to the point quickly once he came around to it.

“Oh,” said Piper, completely floored by this turn. And before she could stop herself, she blurted, “I just thought you’d probably be taking a guy.”

Realizing that might be a little uncouth, she hastily backpedaled. “But—thank you. I’m flattered by the invitation,” she said. A little spark of excitement flared. An invitation to a promotional ball at such high rank was huge. She didn’t even care that it was a pity date; that being in a wheelchair had apparently put her on a list for good publicity dates. Oh, look at the new chancellor, such a humanitarian, taking the crippled girl to the dance. She’d probably have to swallow her independence and let him push her around the dance floor like some cheesy rom com. At least he told her she was basically picked for him and didn’t try to bullshit her into thinking he picked her because he really liked her. “I’ll go—I’d love to go.” Since it was the only way she’d ever get an invite—and she wanted one, badly. For all she imagined she could see through the surface layer of the sparkle of these publicity events, she loved the sparkle, and what she pictured underneath was still pretty shiny.

She laughed a little at the way he phrased that last bit: ‘I’m willing to offer.’ “Do you really want to get together again between now and then, or are you just being polite?” she asked. “You can be real with me—“ She almost called him Chancellor but caught herself. “—Derrick.”
