Jay Parcher

"Positive thinking hardly leads to positive feeling. It only leads to a complete inablilty to take negative feeling seriously. But that's all we really need, I guess ..."

a character in “A Hard Lesson Learned”, as played by crapshoot

Description

Rambling text, vibrant figures, demolished structures and posters with any combination of the above filled the streets of a once quiet and unassuming suburban town. Behind the crowd of rampant outrage and speculation was the perpetrator no-one ever considered, living his bittersweet dreams in the shadows of destruction. Sixty-one year old Jay Parcher has finally seem the world acknowledge his genius. But a twinge of heartache still remains.

Eccentric and timid, Parcher always had a vibrant imagination with brilliant ideas, but nothing in the way of communicating said ideas to any sane, rational person. Consequently, his ideas drove everyone away except for family, who only keeps in touch out of obligation. He felt unwanted and tried to stay out of the way as much as possible. But such a life didn't bring him happiness. It wasn't worth living. Besides, no-one would know if he took a more ... indirect approach, right?

And so Parcher started to make his mark on the world, sometimes in a disturbingly literal fashion. Most of his work is relatively harmless, painting pretty little pictures in dark corner alleyways away from public sight. Others may involve the stylizing of trees, bushes, statues and roads or the "rearrangement" of random property. All the way, Parcher was constantly held by a twinge of guilt, or fear, or both. No-one knows. But he couldn't stop. It's the only thing that gave meaning to his life. Well, at least he managed to turn a garbage dump into a local tourist attraction.

So begins...

Daniel Surman

On the bright side, Daniel wasn't laying in the middle of a road where he could get run over. On the bad side, he wasn't where he remembered passing out. The second his eyes snapped open, the boy was confident that he had been killed and made his way down to hell. Where else would he be? Prison cells didn't look like blank silver boxes... unless he was in some sort of weird solitary confinement room. But even if that were the case, why?
When his sight finally came in to focus, Daniel felt an unusual sense of panic. He literally had no idea where he was or how he got there. He was supposed to be outside of the police station right on the road. Looking down at his wrists, Daniel realized his handcuffs were gone. If someone was trying to free him, they were doing on awful job.

Pushing himself to his feet, Daniel staggered toward what he assumed must have been the door. Making a run for it seemed like a good idea in his head, but the lack of a handle was enough to mess with the plan. Scowling, Daniel pounded his fist against the metal. "Hey!" He shouted, scowling at the door. "How about someone tells me where I am, huh? Is this some sort of jail or something?" He waited in silence for a reply, but no answer was given to him. Snorting, Daniel rolled his eyes and turned around. Of course no one was going to tell him anything. What did he expect?

All would have been well if the lights hadn't gone out and an explanation hadn't been given to him. After he knew what was happening, Daniel realized he hadn't wanted to know. What the hell kind of place was this? It all seemed like a game to him. A horrifying but definitely tempting game. A maze, was that what it was? He only had to find his way out and he'd be freed, simple as that. It would have been a lie to say that Daniel wasn't grinning when the door in front of him opened.
However, he must have skipped over the part where the screen explained that there would be others, because he was taken aback when a girl rushed passed him. There were people with him? Daniel frowned at the realization. Winning would be a whole lot harder if he actually had to compete, and apparently he couldn't kill.

Curiosity getting the best of him, Daniel stepped out of the room and examined the hallway. There were other rooms just like his, each holding someone completely different than the next. There were two blondes, one brunette, two men and an old guy. One room, Daniel noticed, was empty when he passed by it. The one who ran. He thought, narrowing his eyes. There was only one door opening further down the hall, so the girl must have gone in to there, but Daniel figured he could talk to her later.
At the moment, he felt like yelling.
"Somebody has to know what the fuck is going on!" He shouted, eyeing the walls for cameras or hidden microphones. Someone had to be behind it all, and to be honest Daniel was scared of not finding out who it was. Was it the police? The government?
For the first time in a rather long time, Daniel was terrified.

Parcher gazed lazily at nowhere in particular as he woke, unaware of the shift of location from where he last remembered. In fact, he couldn't remember much anyways. Not that it mattered. Memories are pointless. Or something.

He was right about to go back to sleep if it were not for the lights flickering out from above him. Before he had the chance to respond, a screen appeared and proceeded to deliver a montage of pictures of people, including himself, followed by text.

As Parcher followed the text, his thoughts immediately cringed in resentment. He didn't even notice the door opening.

Children? Deserve to be taught a lesson? Just how self-righteous and patronizing can this guy be??

But as always, there's many sides to every argument, even in only in one person's head.

Maybe it's just a game. Aren't I lucky to be chosen?
But the premises is just ...
Let it go, the premises doesn't matter.
Well, it can matter, but it doesn't have to. Yeah. Don't judge a book by its author.
Well you can of course, I mean
I mean ...

A girl passing by snapped him out of his reverie, followed by a young man. Somebody has to know what the fuck is going on! he heard him shout. It just dawned upon Parcher that they were probably trapped here, potentially forever, unless they behaved like good little sheeple. Or something.

He chuckled.

"Might as well make the most of it, shall we?" Parcher muttered to himself, making his way to the recreation room. He felt like creating something ...

Sasha Richards

Unlike the others, Sasha didn't come around until the screen had already popped up. Her eyes, not adjusted to the vivid glare from the words scrolling on the screen, squinted and protested at the sudden flood of light. Sasha brushed her hair away from her face and managed to catch the basic idea of what she was being told. She was being kept in a facility...underground...because of what she had done... It took a while, but as soon as her bodily systems had finished the waking up process, the enormity of the situation she was in hit her like a cold bucket of water. Shock immediately ensued and she hopped up to her feet, albeit shakily, and took in her surroundings. Four silver walls, one with a door. What?! Sasha began to pace, the thought of being so far away from any life rocking her to her core and throwing her into a panic. Shit..shit...shit... Sasha was so busy pacing, hands buried into her thick hair at the side of her head, that she didn't notice the door swing open with a mechanical 'woosh' of the mechanisms until a few people passed it, one of them shouting something.

Think Sasha think...where were we....? That's it! The last conscious memory that Sasha had been able to hold on to was of the fact that she had been with a client when she passed out. She had been draped on the sofa, her dress cascading in a silvery satin sheet around her slim frame, sipping a tall glass of champagne, when she had begun to feel faint and whoozy. She remembered her female client kneeling on the floor in front of her, her slender fingers brushing along her cheekbones and whispering "I'm sorry..." over and over. That bitch! It was her that had put her here! But that screen said their captor was male...hmm..

Eventually, Sasha regained enough resolve to step foot out of her confines. She poked her head out of the door and scanned the hallway. There were lots of other rooms like hers, some of them empty, and looking in the direction that the others had fled, there was another room. Must be communal... Sasha thought to herself. Building up a facade that she was tough and strong, Sasha gracefully padded down the hallway, her ears listening for the slightest of sounds. Upon entering the large room, she saw all of the people that had fled past her door, besides one. The blonde lady. I wonder where she is... Sasha rubbed her arms, feeling suddenly exposed and self conscious, and decided that she'd retreat to the bathroom to wash her face. That might make her feel a bit more human. The young woman scooted around the edge of the room, begging that no-one would notice her, and ducked into the bathroom as soon as she got there. "Oh!" she cried out as she almost ran into the distraught blonde lady. The woman looked stricken and frightened. "Hey, sssh are you okay?" Sasha crooned, holding her hands up like she was talking to a defensive wild animal. "What's going on? Why are we here?" She asked, hoping that she was dreaming and this woman would disappear in a cloud of butterflies or something like her other dreams.

Julie

She continued to thrash in her manic fashion, shoving her fingers through her hair and scraping at the inside of her elbows. She was sobbing now, airy, weeping breathes. She turned to storm around some more, but another walked into her. She cried out a scrabbled backwards, sitting on the edge of the tub. Her limp hair had fallen before her face as she continued her helpless sniveling.

Running a hand slowly up her arm to leave the sleeve in a crumpled bunch over the inside of her elbow, she wiped at her nose. "I... I don't know." She wiped at her face again, before pushing to her feet. She avoided eye contact with all her effort, lest she go mental again. "L-Listen," she started, flicking her left wrist outwards continuously. "You... uh... you don't..." she muttered, wiping at her nose with the back of the sleeve. "You wouldn't happen to have any... um, any Junk?"

She paused, swaying on her bare feet a little. "I mean, I can't pay you for it or anything... but I could... uh... I don't know. I'd pay you back, I promise!" She finally looked up through bleary, hopeful grey eyes. She fidgeted at the answer she recieved. She was getting edgy again. Maybe this girl had something and wasn't sharing! She felt her anger flare up in her tired, scared mind. "Look lady, if you've got anything, I need it! I mean, I really freaking need it!"

Cussing at the other, she shoved her fingers into her hair again. "Fuck!" she cried again, walking out past Sasha. She paused upon seeing the old man and the boy, proceeding to dash over to both and kneel before them. "I-If you have anything- meth, coke, fuck I'll take an E, I'd do anything for it." She watched each man's eyes carefully, before becoming irritated again and proceeding to sit on the couch and bring her knees up. Her fingers resumed their position in her hair and she pressed her face into her knees, weeping again hopelessly. "What'd I ever do?" she whispered into her knees. "I don't get into fights. I pay everyone back. What I do?" She let out a desperate moan before collapsing onto the couch cushions, staring at the room. "We're all going to die in here, I just know it."

Daniel Surman

Daniel had made his way into the recreation room a few moments before the old guy came wandering in. He didn't care enough to start up a conversation, nor was he concerned about where the girl had went off to, so Daniel found himself mindlessly looking through the shelves while he waited for... for anything. Directions, a better explanation... a way out would be nice. Though at the moment, he'd take whatever he could get. Normally Daniel was picky about his options unless he was growing desperate. And this, this completely foreign situation, was enough to make him lunge into desperation if he had to stay five minutes longer.

The other blonde woman came creeping into the room and headed through another doorway. Just like with the old man, Daniel didn't bother with trying to talk to her. Sure, he wanted to get out of the place probably as much as everyone else, but actually chatting with them could be saved for when it was needed. Besides, none of them looked smart enough to plan out an escape anyway.
Daniel was skimming through one of the books from the shelf when the voices from the second room became more audible, then a few seconds passed and the first girl came rushing out. She began blabbering to both Daniel and the old guy, going on about her need to sustain some stupid addiction, and Daniel scowled in disgust as he took a few steps back.
Here they were, stuck underground somewhere, and the girls main focus was getting her drugs. Pathetic junkie. Daniel thought, glaring at her as she made her way over to the couch.

The other woman came in shortly after and began trying to sooth the addict, but all Daniel could think about was what the junkie had said only seconds before.
"With the way you two are acting, no shit we're gonna die in here." He snapped, shooting each of them a glare. "How about we start trying to figure some things out before we start moping, hey? There's gotta be a way out of this." Gotta be. His thoughts echoed. There was always a solution no matter what, wasn't there?
There wasn't a good way out for those people I killed. The thoughts continued, making Daniel momentarily freeze. Why would I be an exception when it comes to death?
Daniel pushed the thought away. He didn't want to think about that.

There was definitely a time where the young man would have acted more sympathetic towards Junkie and Little Miss Coo, but that was long since gone and now he just felt anger. Old Guy wasn't complaining, Daniel didn't hear any of the others wailing about their deaths, it was just Junkie, and frankly he wanted to tell her to quit the fuss and focus on the problem. The solution might be nonexistent, but it was at least worth a shot to try to find it.

Chloe York

Chloe was really, really confused when suddenly she woke up on a floor of a small, silver steel room. She jumped to her feet startled, and looked around frantically to where she was. She thought, I was just at a party, now where I am?.She collected her thoughts trying to remember how she got here. She talked to a few guys who bought her a drink but she was always careful to pay attention they won't slip her anything inside the drink. However, after her second drink only she felt dizzy and everything was spinning. Than everything went black and it is blurry and she does not remember anything till now.
Suddenly the lights flickered, and when she looked around she noticed a door in the room. Running so fast she almost hit the door, trying to find the handle to open it. No handle?!. She than looked back in the room, trying to see another exit. Someone kidnapped her, she thought, they perhaps want her money. They don't know she stole it, but they know she is wealthy and perhaps now they trying to hold for ransom. Just than a screen flickered and she noticed the tv, she watched it as she saw the words popped on the screen, her head is spinning from the news. Also, there are others here, trapped just like her. It is some good news, better numbers are always good for escape.
As the words on the screen faded and the pictures of other males and females here, she pondered. A game? so it is punishment for bad people with a chance to escape by playing a game?. She smirked, Chloe was kinda always good at games, so if she can win she can go back to her wealthy and happy life.
The door opened and just when she stepped into the hallway in order to go to the room as instructed, it took her quite a while as she checked every corner and wall in the hallway, for any little thing that might help to escape or win the supposedly-called game. She reached the room right when she saw a frantic young girl crying saying they will all die here and another girl trying to sooth her.
The other young man said "How about we start trying to figure some things out before we start moping, hey? There's gotta be a way out of this." . She smiled and nodded, "Yes, you are right, crying won't help us anyway. We might as well try to look around, I mean, the guy did say we have a chance of getting out of here by winning the so called game of him. So, better we try to find something to help us win or escape...."

Parcher was surprised to see the young man passing by before already in the recreation room. He gave a nervous grin in his general direction before residing in the corner where a pack of playing cards lay. As he sat there fanning his sweaty palms with the flickering of the cards, the first girl came rushing, desperately pleading for ... drugs? Yeah, guess that makes sense.

Before he had the chance to respond, the girl was curled up on the couch crying about how they're all going to die, until someone else came in and started to soothe her. Then, the young man started snapping at them about getting their act together. And then another girl came out and agreed with him. Things are happening so quickly; a few minutes in and everyone's already desperate to get out. But then, most people seems to settle down after they've been somewhere for a while for some reason. Parcher wasn't like that. He's the type to be all curious and accepting about somewhere new at first until the place starts growing on his nerves. But this isn't some vacation spot.

Who cares?

Everyone cares, buddy, everyone cares. But this time, the concept of caring talks up a whole different context. It's not good to care. Caring holds you back. Parcher wanted to make these people stop caring.

He proceeded to split the cards in half, saving the reverse end for later on. His supplies seem to have vanished at the very least. He cringed painfully at the thought, but a resourceful artist can make use of anything.

Julie

She was shocked from her emotion by the boy who looked about her age. He snapped at her, and she recoiled into the couch cushions. Her anger bubbled before giving way to hopelessness again. "Is there ever any way?" she asked in a hushed tone, watching as the old man walked to a corner. "I mean, in the hopeless goddamned world, do we ever get anywhere? All we ever do is live and then die. We work, we-we get through the next day. But for what purpose? I... I-I think it's easier with drugs," she whispered. "Then you feel good for a while."

Turning to yet another blonde, she frowned. "Game... game... This is... a game. But whoever the hell our 'games master' is, he-he's clearly not going to... he's not going to just give us what we want. We'll have to fight for it." She played with her fingers absently, watching as her skin bounced back into place after being pulled. "I don't want to fight. Not anymore. I just wan- I want to go home."

She stood and walked to the old man, twitching her fingers. "Hello," she offered. Seating herself, Julie crossed her legs and took half the cards. "Did you ever build a house of cards? I used to do it with my dad. He would cheat and blow mine down." She let out a laugh, before sucking it back in, glancing over her shoulder. She dropped the cards in a messy pile, heading past the teen boy, giving him a cold, meek stare, towards the fridge. Inside was a carton of milk, and on the bench beside it there were tea bags and a coffee jar. She searched the cupboards for a kettle, but found none. "Dammit!" she hissed, slamming her hands on the countertop. She opened another and found a box of crackers.

Taking them up, she headed back to the couch, struggling to open the foil wrapper. When she failed, she turned to the woman who'd offered her kindness. Holding it out, she smiled weakly. "Could you...?"

Overseer

Well, he thought. This is certainly interesting...
Pressing his fingers together and watching the screen, he smiled to himself as the junkie girl panicked and the prostitute tried to help. He liked the concept of some of the banding together. Made for a fun game, at the very least. The old man was certainly intriguing. He did nothing to involve himself with the others. Did he even recognise that they were there?
And the boy- he knew that he would have a spot of trouble adjusting his behaviour.
The other two were yet to come out of their cells. That frustrated him greatly. It was necessary for all to meet before the games could begin. Already, however, his plans were falling into place.

Eric's eyes groggily opened, and the room spun before finally settling after a few seconds. He was sitting. back against the wall in a completely empty silver room. The only thing that even remotely stood out was the faint outline of the door. He stood; and noticed the olive drab clothing he was now wearing. It was similar to something that he would usually wear, although he noted that these clothes didn't belong to him. How'd he end up in these anyway? He tucked his shirt in, and checked the pockets; both empty. Approaching the door, he noticed no way of opening it. Unsure about what to do, he gave it a few hard knocks.

Suddenly, the room was filled with bright light, which caused him to take a few steps backwards. He leaned against the wall as he struggled to read some words that had appeared on a screen. A game? What kind of game was this? Although, he couldn't dispute the bit about murdering without thinking anyone knew. Was this some sort of police investigation. No, the police wouldn't use such odd tactics.

Eric watched as the door opened, but instead of leaving the room, he sunk back down to a sitting position. The adrenaline rush had left him rather out of breath, and he simply felt like he needed to take a few minutes to catch it. He worried about the fact that he didn't have a mask with him; even if the room did appear spotless.

When he stepped outside, he noticed that there were other people stuck in here as well. Following the directions to the bathroom, he ignored the small gathering of people he walked past. He dug through the various cupboards of the bathroom; finding nothing, really. However, eventually he did find a small box with some surgical masks in it. Breathing a sigh of relief, he donned one. Even if the place was clean and dust free, there were other people; meaning they would create plenty of things he couldn't be breathing in. He was a dying man; he had to play it safe.

His plan to quietly enter the rec room and observe the people in there from the back caught a snag when a few harsh coughs escaped him upon his entrance. After a dozen or so, he had his hands on his knees, and let out a final, scratching cough as he stood up straight.

Sasha Richards

The young man's tone of voice both shocked and frightened Sasha. "Please...don't raise your voice. That won't achieve anything..." If he was this agitated now, what would he be like in the days or weeks or even months that followed. She could tell already. The confinement, the limitations. Slowly more and more of the group would start to lose control and lose their sanity. How long before one of them snaps? Sasha eyed the other curiously, momentarily forgetting about the addict as she spoke. Addict. That was a much better word than 'junkie'. More and more people slowly entered the large room until she wondered if there were any more to come in. Sasha caught the tail end of the woman's words and came to the realisation of why she was on the drugs. Then she got up and wandered off so Sasha resumed her wary watching of the others who were trapped here.

When the addict finally came and sat back next to her, Sasha felt her heart soften towards her. She gently took the crackers from her and pulled the little tear off flap and opened the top up. "Ow! Papercut..." she yelped, popping the injured finger into her mouth. Dammit. That did not help the thoughts going through her head. Although she had wondered when it was that the others would crack, she also wondered how long it would take her. She was already considering what she could use and it was only day one. Give her a week of this and Sasha would crumble like an old cookie.

Determined to distract herself, Sasha took a cracker and nibbled the corner. "What's your name?" she asked the woman next to her gently, sick of referring to her as 'the addict'. If there was one person that she felt she could trust, it was actually this woman. Oddly, it wasn't the quiet man or the rational young woman. It was the vulnerable addict, the one that needed the help and comfort.

Parcher often felt more at ease in a natural environment, but this commotion isn't the idle chatter of random pedestrians. He set down the card he was trying to fray at a corner to set an opening to split to look up as the first girl with the agitated mannerisms dashed around talking about life and games. That's not all there is to it, okay? he thought automatically. He frowned a little as she dropped half the cards after a comment about paper houses before proceeding to look through the kitchen supplies.

Well, this is depressing.
No, we're the ones getting depressed.

He suddenly stood up to snap out of yet another thought loop, only to collapse back down in laughter, until his eyes snapped back up to make sure he hasn't attracted any attention. Well, attention is what he seeks, but he still fears it. His head and his heart could never quite agree with each other. but without a heart there's no point in having a head. Or something. Because both the desire for and fear of attention originate from the heart.

SHUT UP ALREADY

Parcher stood up successfully this time and headed to the cupboards, flashing a nervous grin at another man coughing at the entrance. The spazzy girl was back on the couch with the other who was trying comfort her earlier, so he approached the bench and collected a teabag and the milk from the fridge. None of them seem to be in the mood for a drink anyways. Tearing up the teabag, he faced the wall, turning back once to grin nervously towards the general direction of everyone else. He needed to say something. But what? His mind was blank.

Seeing Sasha cut herself, she frowned. She never liked seeing anyone else get hurt. Even a little. She took the crackers, making a job of nibbling off the knobbly edges first, before progressing inwards. It would be best if she kept her mind of things. At least she thought so. Looking up as the old man burst into laughter, she widened her eyes. It was frightening- was he already losing his mind?
She recoiled once again into the couch, taking up another cracker. Looking back to the girl upon her question, she gave a small smile. "I-I'm Julie," she said softly. She chewed through the next cracker, glancing over to Chloe and giving her a more earnest grin. "I once had a dog named Chloe. She was a Silky Terrier. Yappy little thing, but we loved her." She glanced over her shoulder at her new aquaintence.

Cocking her head to the side as the old man smiled nervously, she waited for the others to respond to the question. She was curious, however. There were two people who'd not yet shown up. By her count it was a man and a woman. She felt young amongst these people; all but that angry one looked to be older than her. She listened as the others recounted their names, before turning to the man with the mask. "Hey, Mister. What's the mask for? Are you a germophobe?" She didn't mean to be so callous, but that's how she was.

Her twitching resumed and she grabbed at another cracker to take her mind off of it.

Clarissa Merryweather

Clair groans quietly as she wakes up, her head pounding slightly. She runs a hand through her hair, glancing around the room. 'Where am I?' She wonders. The last thing she remembers, is going to sleep by the river. Her mom had managed to scrape up the money, but she wasn't able to pick Clair up from jail because Clair's stepfather wouldn't let her. So, once she was out, she had to fend for herself. She couldn't go home, she tried to find somewhere else to stay but none of her friends would let her stay with them. To be honest, they were pretty afraid of her after they found out what she'd done. Having no other choice, she ended up going down to the river, which was, thankfully, deserted. She went to sleep, and that's all she remembers, until now.

Slowly, Clair gets to her feet, glancing around the little room. She spots the screen, reading the words that scroll across it. 'No, there must be some kind of mistake.' She thinks, her heart racing in her chest. "I shouldn't be here! There must have been some kind of mistake!" She yells, hoping who ever is in charge here will hear her. 'If anyone deserves to be here it's my stepfather,' She thinks.

The door whooshes open and she sees people moving around in the hallway. She glances back toward the screen, hoping more words will appear, that this is just some kind of sick twisted joke. After staring at the blank screen for a while, she sighs quietly. Running a hand through her hair, she glances at the door once more. 'You want play? I'll play alright,' She thinks, getting her emotions under control, calming herself down. Figuring if she could handle her stepdad, she can handle whatever this place has to throw at her.

Taking one last deep breath, Clair walks out the door and down the hallway to the rec room. She glances around at the others in the room, sizing them all up for a few moments before slowly walking over to an empty table and sitting down. She doesn't say a word to anyone as sits down, resting her head in her hand, really wishing her head would stop pounding.

What do you think you're in for?
Do you think you deserve to be here?
Don't you think "justice" is a flawed concept?
... Don't you think this kidnapper guy is a self-righteous moron?
Or is this just a game?
If it's just a game, maybe it could be fun ...
y'know ...

It's not like Parcher actually had the guts to ask any of those questions. Even now that his vandalism had gained state-wide recognition, he still longs to chat about the big questions to someone who's interested. Apparently the closest he's ever got was imposing his ideas on public property and watch the media's reaction.

I wish I was out of here so I can see more of those reactions. his thoughts snarked halfheartedly and with no success at provoking humour.

He gazed up at the ceiling. "I'm Parcher ... Jay Parcher." he mumbled absentmindedly as a girl's voice; Chloe, she said; next to him inquired about names. Contrary to all appearances, he really hopes people heard that. But he's not gonna repeat himself if they didn't. It's just his name. It's not worth the effort of being repeated.

Sasha Richards
WARNING: SENSITIVE AND GRAPHIC TEXT IN THIS POST

Sasha smiled softly at Julie, her name reminding her of a beautiful song she heard when she was younger. "That's a beautiful name," she sighed, and continued to nibble on her cracker as everyone announced themselves. Julie, Chloe, Jay... "Oh, i'm uhm...Sasha.." she stammered, suddenly and swiftly becoming painfully aware of how many people there. Sasha stuffed the rest of the cracker in her mouth and chomped it slowly, freeing up her hands to pull her sleeves down over her arms and tuck her hands under her thighs (essentially sitting on them). She could feel her shyness and anxiety fluttering and building up deep in her stomach.

So, when the missing female came in, Sasha cracked. Her fear, her anxiety and her paranoia burst forward like a stallion leading a charge. She sprung from the sofa, her bare feet pattering on the floor, and skittered towards the bathroom. Once she reached it, she slammed the door shut and promptly slid to the floor with her back pressed against it. There, her knees pulled up to her chest and her arms wrapped around her legs, Sasha buried her face into her knees and let her emotions flow. Great sobs shook her slender figure and her tears soaked into the hair around her face. As she sat sobbing violently, Sasha realised just how scared she was. Everything she had known had been stripped from her, and she was given no choice about it. Her stomach danced somersaults in her torso and her heart fluttered like a hummingbird's.

She had to do it. Gathering herself shakily to her feet, Sasha scurried around the bathroom looking for something sharp. There was nothing. No shaving razors. No glass ornaments. Suddenly, her head snapped towards the mirror. Perfect she panted, dashing towards it and digging her nails underneath. Sasha became frantic and hectic as she scrabbled at the mirror, and slowly more desperate as she realised that it wasn't coming off. Pausing for breath, Sasha propped herself up with both hands on the sink basin, and glared at her reflection. Look at her. Tear stained face. Wet and sweat soaked fringe and hair. She recoiled at the sight, and suddenly lashed out, swinging a fist into the mirror. The silvery shards scattered across the floor, the sink and the nearby shelves. Sasha studied her hand with apparent fascination as warm red blood oozed from her knuckles. The young woman sagged to her knees and held her hand in her lap, palm up, and reached for the largest shard near her. Her eyes were almost glazed over as she gripped the shard and held it's deadly edge against the tender skin of her wrist. How she longed to feel that sweet sting. To make her heart stop racing and her brain pause to collect itself. She had to cope. She had to breathe.

Julie

She freaked when Sasha leapt out of the chair, getting up and scrambling away. Tentatively looking around at the others for reactions, she crept forwards slowly. "I-I'm going... I'm uh... going to check on her." She shoved a hand to her mouth, chewing her fingers and she slowly advanced on the door. She shrieked when she heard the glass break, shoving hard against the door.

"Sasha! Open the door! Please!" she cried out. She looked around before dashing over to the drawers, moving Parcher aside quickly. "Sorry Jay, but... I need- I-I gotta..." She gave up on talking, he was busy with a tea bag or something anyway. She pulled out the draw with all her force, watching as the silverwear scatter across the floor. Grabbing a fork, she dashed back to the door, slowly wedging the utensil between the frame and the door. When the wood splintered, she shoved with all her weight against the door, crying out when it successfully burst open.

She stopped short at the sight of Sasha. She hadn't yet cut, but the hand she held the shard in was cut up over the knuckles. She gagged, coughing and covering her mouth. "Stop!" she wheezed. When there was no reaction, she knelt down and wrenched the glass away from her. Tossing it over to the sink, she punched Sasha. "Are-Are you insane?" she cried forecfully. "What do you think you're doing?! Stop it! Stop your crying! We're here for a reason, and you have a chance to get out! Get up. Now!" She was furious, shrieking and yelling. It was certianly different from the Julie who'd quivered at some boy yelling.

"I said get your ass up Sasha! No, don't you fucking cry!" She grabbed Sasha's arm and pulled her over to the bath tub, turning the cold spray on to soak her, watching as she seemed to snap out of it. She climbed in behind her, holding the woman to her chest. "Don't. Don't you dare. The rest of us can't have our wants. Cutting- i-it's like drugs, you know? Don't sink. Don't be like me," she whispered, clutching her tighter.

Eric vaguely heard people mentioning names; he had spaced out a little bit in the few seconds after his coughing fit. He stood in the back of the room, listening. Chloe, Julie, Parker...they came out one by one. Finally, he let out a quiet "Eric."

"Hey mister. What's the mask for? Are you a germaphobe?" The callousness of the statement is what bothered Eric; even though he was very much the same. Stares he was used to, he even eventually got questions from people, but he always assumed they probably thought he was just scared of germs.

"No. No I am not." The comment came out with twice the callousness that the original statement had. "I happen to have a terminal case of cystic fibrosis, so I cannot *cough* breath easily." He gave her a dirty glare, "And it wouldn't hurt you to develop any sense of tact."

Daniel Surman

Daniel had never really liked strangers, and now he was forced to stay in a room with them. A few began talking to eachother, the Junkie saying something to Old Guy and then to Little Miss Coo.
Another girl had came into the room and agreed with Daniel's statement earlier, but he was too stubborn over by the bookshelf to look her way. They obviously weren't here to make friends, so why did it matter if he stayed to himself or not?
'Cause nobody likes a grump. He thought.

". . .What is everyone's name? I am Chloe..." The new girl said, this time causing Daniel to put the book down and turn around.
"Julie." Junkie replied.
". . .Parcher." Old Guy said, though the rest of his words had been too quiet for Daniel to hear.
Eric. The new guy squeezed in.
"Oh, i'm uhm...Sasha.." Little Miss Coo stated, her voice sounding rather nervous. She had the right to be. The place they were in was like something pulled straight out of the beginning of a horror movie.
Well, at least Daniel could quit with the nicknames, now that they were all introducing themselves.

He was about to add in his name when Sasha seemingly freaked out. It was right when the newest lady came in, which made him wonder if Sasha just didn't like big groups or something. Personally, he actually liked crowds. More people meant a better chance of blending in and staying unnoticed. Sasha, however, looked as if she would disagree.
She sprang up from the couch and rushed into the washroom without even the slightest explanation. Rude. Daniel thought, though other than that he couldn't have cared less about what the woman did... Until he heard the mirror break.

"What the hell is she-" Daniel began to say, but Julie cut his sentence short.
"I-I'm going... I'm uh... going to check on her." The junkie announced before taking a few seconds to force her way into the bathroom.
That's what being friends looks like. Daniel thought, lowering an eyebrow when Julie's frantic yelling was heard. It didn't sound like it was out of anger, though. It was like... she was worried. Julie had known Sasha would a total of, like, five seconds and already she was worried about her.
How about you try it sometime? His thoughts nudged.

As the voices from the bathroom continued, the boy cleared his throat.
"Well, uh. I'm Daniel." He muttered, glancing at the remaining faces in the room. "Someone should probably go check if they're okay." He added quickly, nodded towards where Sasha and Julie were.

"Tact is overrated." Parcher rebutted automatically at Eric's remark. "Maybe. Probably. I think. I mean sorry about your condition and stuff ... or not ... sorry hehehehe ... idunno ......" He shrank back and trailed off nervously in a string of doubts.

Shut up; they'll figure out who you are.
But that's what you've always wanted! You're just too chicken to come out and tell everyone!
True ...

His eyes darted back up as Sasha; ... sounds like a guy's name; rushed out towards the bathroom without a warning. A chill shot up his spine as the shattering of a mirror rang from the bathroom. Julie was trying desperately to get in, and Parcher hardly had the chance to respond as she approached the drawers near him in search of a fork, scattering the rest of the cutlery in the process. She sure likes to scatter things, his thoughts remarked in a vain attempt to lighten the mood.

Until she started yelling. Daniel's probably right, someone might wanna check on them, but visiting two young women in a bathroom was probably too awkward to act on. Pretend not to hear him; you're always good at that.

Julie

Nodding and sniffling, she brought an arm up to shut off the water. Pulling at her hair to relinquish it of some water, she stood. "Yeah... I guess so." She didn't mention that if someone else broke she'd lose her own mind. She pushed up out of the water, looking in the cabinets for a towel. When she found one, she wringed her clothes briefly, before patting herself dry. Avoiding eye contact with Sasha, she exited, sniffing and wiping her mouth of the towel.

She padded over to the cutlery, slowly picking it up and placing it in the drawer. "I'm sorry about the mess," she said quietly, before replacing the drawer. She then went and sat in a corner, trying to rid her mind of the images she'd seen in the bathroom. Glancing to the side, she saw the cards, meticulously sorting them. Her need was back. She needed her stuff. Or a distraction.

Placing them up into a pyramid, she rubbed her hands on the towel, continuing to build up the little house. She shivered, however, and the cards tumbled down. "Dammit," she hissed under her breath. She slapped the last of the cards down, curling into the corner, wrapping the fluffy white material tighter around her quivering form, staring ahead.

She glanced up at Daniel. She didn't like him. Not at all. Then she realised something. "Wait!" she called, straightening. "The screen said that there was a reason we were here! What have you guys done wrong?" She paused, hanging her head. "It's pretty damn clear what I did."
