Introduction
The King of Atropates is on his deathbed and his daughter, the Princess, is to inherit the throne. Her elder brother has been banished from the land after treating it without respect; his claim on the throne has been made void. There are many factions fighting to place themselves at the new heir's right hand. The Princess is vulnerable and has no trusted allies past her handmaiden and her forlorn, grieving mother.
The factions are the military, the industrial magnates, the alchemists and the trade union leaders.
Historically, the military has had power over the throne, as the army is considered to be one of the best in the known world. History has shown the army's might and there have been a few coup d'etat centuries ago when high commanding officers of the army have not been pleased with the King/Queen and have had them replaced with their own puppets.
The industrial magnates, however, hold the money and therefore are taken seriously. They build the houses and train the horses that drive the carriages; they rule businesses and deal with bribes to get their way. They have often supplied money and power to the most corrupt Kings of Atropates.
The alchemists are considered to be untrustworthy with their 'magic'. Some people consider them to be carrying out the work of the Devil, others consider the alchemists to be close to God. There are factions within the alchemists - those who work for the people and those who work for themselves. There are healers but also illusionists in this mixed foray of magic-doers. They have also managed to win the favour of the current king - although who is to say what their motives are.
The trade union leaders are seen as the justice to the people, but as they have no favour with the nobles of the land, they are not considered a very strong faction. They have caused rebellions in the past and overthrown Kings, but they are only as strong as the people's will.

With regards to currency, it isn't something I'd actually thought about, so I will and get back to you.

With magic, you can play around a little bit, within reason. The alchemists' magic can almost been seen as a sort of chemistry, so there's potions and creating something out of something else. There is always the rule of 'equality'. So no making gold from grass or anything like that (Although the Philosopher's Stone can be alluded to as it has a close link to alchemy).
Alchemists cannot control people's mind or read them, they can't create fire in the palms of their hands or move things with their minds. Some of them DO believe in prophecies and destiny... I know that's not really 'magic' but it's something else that can be used in the story.
However, magic does not have to be limited to the alchemists. You can introduce some 'black magic' where someone uses voodoo to curse someone. Or you might have a character who has healing powers, although they might be seen as a 'witch' and not necessarily accepted by their community.
What I don't want is any characters with powers over an element or all-out powerful. As long as the magic makes sense and fits into the world in a logical way, it's acceptable.
I hope that's given you some clarification? If not, throw more questions my way! If you do have an idea which you think will work well with regards to magic, go with it, don't feel like you need my permission - I'm just here for guidance and I'd like everyone to have a role in how this world shapes and forms :)
Re: A Kingdom on Fire
1. Are there races besides human?
1b. If so, are the royal family all a specific race or?
2. Magic is mentioned in conjunction with alchemists. Are there other types of magic?
2b. If so, what sort of magic should be expected?

Anyone on the Prince's side can do a bit of scheming and whatnot until the Prince appears!
