Jackson Anderson

Lately he had been feeling a bit sluggish and he couldn't help but wonder if it had been all the junk he was eating. He would try to get the healthier options on the menus but when it was surrounded by all the other delicious fried foods, he couldn't help but order it. "It's no good, but it tastes so good." He said holding the container to his heart. Jackson was dramatic and goofy like that. You could always rely on him to make a stupid joke or doing something whacky. It was one of his best assets and what he thought really won Amelia over, all those years ago.

He brought all the food over to the coffee table, where in the past they usually took all their meals. Why they even had a dining table was beyond him, and after all that time Amelia took him to every furniture store to buy the right one. She wasn't satisfied with just any furniture. Everything had to perfect, and stand out on it's own. At least it looked good where it was, unused. On the sofa, he began piling the food onto his plate. "There's some dumplings, white rice, steak and broccoli, and steamed veggies. So go wild, and eat to your hearts content, I know I will."

As he ate, he took the remote and started flipping through the channels. Usually there was a good movie on, but as he went through them, a good majority of them were either romances, or horror and neither were good for the occasion. The romance for obvious reasons and the horror because he didn't think he could eat and watch blood and guts on the t.v. at the same time. So for the moment he settled on the news, catching up on what has been happening as of late. One story in particular stood out and it was about gang affiliated drug runs in Washington. Such a case that his department would take on.

"See it stupid stuff like that, that makes me do what I do," he mentioned as the news went on about how three teens died while involved in the smuggling and traded of drugs. It made me worry about the future of America, and now the future of their child. After all New York was notorious for their drug schemes and outlawed streets. "And this is why you work as hard as you do, to put theses guys where they belong, in county."

As he finished he plate, he sat back and closed his eyes for a moment. Feeling full and drowsy, he was ready for a nap, or better yet, bed. But Amelia was home and she would probably want to talk, not that he minded. After all, if she was home, they might as well take advantage of the time they had together. Just then his phone rang from it's place on the coffee table. The caller i.d. read Allison and Jax cringed. Jeez, did this woman ever give up. It was the third time she had tried calling and he supposed that first two times he ignored the calls would be enough. Grabbing the phone, he silenced it and placed it in his back pocket. "So what are you doing home? Not feel like working?"

It seemed like she had eaten enough for an army by the time she finally felt sated enough to finish, and even then Amelia felt like she could eat more. She wasn't sure if that was the baby growing inside of her that increased her appetite so much or if she had just had enough of meal replacement bars from vending machines. Either way, she welcomed the feeling of a warm belly full of food. Noticing that Jackson had finished, she picked up his plate, just in time to see the name pop up on his phone. She bit down on her lip and shot an angry look to Jackson, he seemed to place his phone away far too hastily. "Leaving the apartment wasn't an option this morning and by the time I could, it was too late for me to do anything of value at work, so I fixed things up around here instead." She responded, sounding a little miffed after his phone went off.

Had he not talked to this Allison girl yet? Certainly he wouldn't carry on with the affair after last night, she hoped. Still, alarms were going off in her head that said it was a possibility. She sighed, walking to their kitchen and rinsing off their plates before returning to her place on the couch.

The news had taken a commercial break and naturally some diaper commercial came on with a disgustingly cute baby crawling around and laughing. "Do you think this baby is going to be cute? Or one of those babies you just sort of nod at and smile, while secretly thinking it looks like a mole rat?" Amelia questioned, trying to imagine their kid in her head. On one hand she assumed it would be beautiful no matter what, even if it was just to her, but on the other she kept imagining the equivalent to a bald troll doll. "Jesus, what if it comes out looking like Adam Sandler? Or Mr. Bean?"

She wasn't really showing yet, though the internet told her that was sure to happen soon, and she poked at her stomach. Amelia had done an awful amount of research the last few days and some of what she learned, she really wished she hadn't. Pregnancy did not at all seem like the magical thing some mothers liked to describe it as and after all the quality time she had spent with her face next to a toilet, she wanted to call all those women dirty liars. One of those "Pregnancy is Beautiful" women was her mother and Amelia knew how excited she would be when the news was finally revealed. There would be a never ending string of baby related presents, as her parents had always wanted grandchildren and often dropped hints when Jackson was around.

Her parents adored him, they really did, and she prayed that for his sake they never found out about his affair. She looked over at Jackson, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts about how they could make this work and if it was a good idea at all for her to keep this pregnancy.

One look at her face and Jackson knew she had seen his phone. He didn't even need to look at her face, it was all in her voice. The clipped tone in which she spoke was a clear indication of what she thought about his late night caller. Jax had sent a text to Allison telling her now wasn't a good time and for her not to trouble herself over him, but clearly she wasn't taking no for an answer. Like Amelia, Allison was a bit on the stubborn side. Although admittedly, Amelia was more clear minded and could see reason, whereas Allison only saw one thing, and one thing only.

He was exasperated and sore. The food had helped a bit, but when you were as tired and had a ball of tension in his back like he did, most people would throw a fit, but the current situation was delicate and any sudden misunderstood statement could throw the whole thing for a loop. When the commercial came on, Jackson had excused himself from the sofa to grab a beer from the back of the fridge. Opening it from the kitchen, he looked into the living room and watched as the baby curled it's toes and cooed. This commercial made it all seem cute and fun, but he knew what kind of hell that babies could really unleash.

"Hey, Adam Sandler is a great man, and Mr. Bean is hilarious. If our kid turns out to look like any one of them," he looked at her stricken face then, "which it wont," he amended, "he'd still make a killing with a personality like those too." Rotating the bottle on his hand, he started imagining the beer bottle turning into a baby bottle. Cringing he leaned up against the counters and drank, trying to rid himself of the thought.

Thoughts kept circling his mind, taunting him. He'd have to get a more appropriate car, for starters. His two passenger Mustang wasn't exactly a baby friendly vehicle. They'd both have to cut down on work hours, when he was sure with a crying infant at home, all he would want was to be at work to escape the shrill shrieking. There was just so much to do and think of. He wondered how this was all playing out in Amelia's head. Was she excited? He always knew she had wanted kids, but so soon? Did she tell her parents? Should he tell his parents? Question after question ran through his mind.

"How are you feeling? You know, about all of this. Tell me your as scared as I am, because honestly that would make me feel a lot better about this all."

The hard line that her lips had settled into for the night softened and she stared at him for a good minute before speaking. "I've been threatened by some seriously terrible people, everything from letters to blatantly screaming it out in a courtroom full of people. It's part of my life. I make sure that people who get caught, stay caught. I'm not afraid of them. I know they're all empty and useless threats, made by angry criminals. I go about my life like they're nothing...but this? This is a baby. This is real. Of course I'm terrified." Did he really think she wouldn't be? Sure, she had always wanted kids, but she wanted them far later in her life. Maybe when she was in her thirties and had worked long enough to want to slow down. Not when she was just barely establishing herself. She had barely proven to everyone at work that she was a good lawyer and not just some ditz playing at being Reese Witherspoon in Legally blonde. Lord help whoever referenced her as Wannabe Elle Woods again, it'd probably be the last thing they'd ever say.

Imagining her life as it was now and trying to throw a baby in the mix simply wasn't possible. There were things she was going to have to sacrifice and change, things that she really didn't care to. She realized she was too selfish and work obsessed to function properly as a mom.

Mom. Suddenly that word was more scary than she'd ever dreamed it could be. The title of Mom meant she was in charge of a human life: feeding it, clothing it, soothing fevers and fighting monsters in closets. Scarier than that, was the more she thought about it the less awful that part seemed. She might even enjoy that...but being a mom meant more time doing that, than doing what she loved as an ADA and possibly giving up the dream of being the District Attorney. Getting elected would be difficult as a mom, especially if she was a single mom...if Jackson ever decided he enjoyed Allison too much to let her go.

"Also, I'm going to look like I'm smuggling a watermelon. Do you know how difficult it's going to be walking around like that in a pencil skirt? God awful." Amelia teased, tossing Jax a cheeky grin. The atmosphere had grown too heavy for her not to joke around a little bit. A baby was normally supposed to be a happy thing, with a lot of planning and picking out names or nursery decorations...

Oh God, a nursery. Did they have enough room in their apartment for that? Would they have to get a bigger one? Their apartment wasn't tiny or anything, but it certainly wasn't a "family home." The idea of moving to a suburb popped in her head, but she had always loved the hustle and bustle of the city, that's why she had chosen to go to school and live in New York. The baby was making everything so complicated and she wondered how normal people handled it so easily.

A sigh of relief escaped his lips. Of course she was scared too. Two seemingly young adults, trying to navigate their way in this thing they call life, bringing a child into it. He wondered if other couples went through the same scare at first. Albeit, some of them may have their lives more put together at this point. Then he wondered how single parents do it. Raising a child was hard enough, but doing it alone? That was unimaginable to him. He wouldn't dare leave Amelia. That was his child too and no matter how unexpected and how soon this child came into their life, he wanted to be apart of it.

He looked at her slightly rounded belly now. There wasn't much to look at now but in the coming months, that small bump would turn into a large protruding stomach that would make just about everything more difficult. He issued a small prayer then that he wasn't the one who had to carry the load. He smiled then wondering how Amelia was going to carry on without her heels. There were enough in the closet to start a small boutique. Her heels were so much apart of her that he was trying to guess just when she was going to have to throw in the towel, or should he say, the shoe.

"Oh of course. Your whole wardrobe will be useless. Bet you would get your legs in the skirt but have to stop once you got to your hips." It was preposterous imaging Amelia trying to fit into her old clothes. The light hearted moment began to lift some of the tension off his shoulder. Teasing one another and having a small banter every once in a while was something he had missed dearly. How often they use to pull small practical jokes on one another or talk about the most ridiculous things.

Finishing his beer, he walked back to the couch and sat beside Amelia, tilting his head back to look at the ceiling. "A lot is going to have to change. A lot.... You haven't told your parents anything yet, have you?" Oh god. Parents. What the hell was he going to tell his mom. Well, he knew what he was going to tell her. She'd be overjoyed at the thought of being a grandmother, but what would she say aside from that. She knew Jackson didn't want kids yet, she would know it had been unplanned. What would Amelia's parents say and think? He inwardly groaned then. They'd probably demand that they get married. Have some sort of shotgun wedding of some sort. The idea of having their precious baby girl pregnant without being married must make them uneasy. They were good people and all and wouldn't think ill of Jackson but they definitely wouldn't be his biggest fan after hearing the news.

Her eyes went wide at the idea of her clothes not fitting. She knew, logically, that this would happen; she would get larger and her clothes were fairly petite. While shoes were obviously her first and main passion, designer clothing didn't fall far behind. Sure, on a normal day she was all about jeans and a t-shirt, but at work or any event that required formal wear? Amelia became a downright fashionista, with a flair for anything vintage or name brand. Neiman Marcus was her playground and various boutiques around New York, not Target. She groaned at the idea of having to shop in the maternity section, for clothes she'd likely only wear until she popped her kid out. "Do you know what's cute about maternity clothes? Nothing. I'm going to look like a sausage with clothes stretched over my vast roundness." Her lips turned downward into a pout.

It was nice to chat and spend time with him, instead of going over files or interviewing witnesses for hours and hours. It was refreshing and for the first time in a long time, it didn't feel like she was coexisting with a stranger. While she loved her job, she had completely forgotten how much she loved this. If it weren't for the lingering heartache over the affair and the bun in her oven, she might have been able to pretend things were normal.

"I figure I can avoid telling them for a while. Until we're sure about everything." Right now, their lives were too unsteady and there was the added bonus, despite their desire to be grandparents and for her to get married, this might be the first time she had ever seriously disappointed them. Amelia was a good kid and worked extremely hard. Up until now, there was very little they had to be upset with her, but a baby out of wedlock seemed like a pretty good reason. They would be more disappointed too, when they found out that a shot gun wedding was out of the question. Amelia was not that girl. The idea of Jackson proposing to her now made her incredibly uncomfortable and would result in a prompt no.

With him sitting next to her and her already half laying on the couch, she placed her head on his lap almost as though it were a habit. It was a familiar position, that she had often done while they watched television in the past, but now she was unsure if it was okay. She looked up at him, getting a good few of his facial scruff that she much preferred him with over a straight shaven face. "We put ourselves in a mess, haven't we?" She asked with a sigh, though she didn't expect a real answer. They cleaned up the city's messes by putting people away all the time with ease, and even enjoyed it, but here they were struggling with their own like it was the end of the world. For all the craziness of the last 24 hours though, the moment of peace had given her hope that it just might be okay and that was just what she had needed.

Her ridiculous comment elicited a hearty chuckle from him. Truly, only Amelia would come up with such strange things, sometimes it seemed as if there was no filter, what odd sayings she had in her head, just came out. "A sausage is a funny way of looking at it. Lot's of women seem to do alright and actually prefer maternity clothes. I mean who are you going to try to look good for anyway?"Certainly not another man, he thought with an instant stab of jealousy. But then the pang of heartache he felt at his own affair made him simmer down like pouring an bucket of ice cold water over his head.

He was a hypocrite. It was totally insane for Amelia to have an affair with another man, but acceptable for him. Well not acceptable, but it happened regardless, but the thought of Amelia doing what he did was unfathomable. She didn't have it in her to do something like that anyway. She was blindly faithful and loved him, despite his flaws and he basically had thrown it all away. Despite having been separated because of busy schedules and different lives, when it came down to it, they both cared for one another immensely. Jackson was determined to make things right again.

"Sounds about right." He sighed in relief. They didn't need to know about. Not now at least. Neither did his mother. No one needed to know in fact. It's not like it was a grand secret to hold onto, eventually it would come out. But he knew he wouldn't tell one of his better friends, and partner. He'd make a big deal about it, and Jax knew he couldn't keep his mouth shut and would tell the whole precinct.

With her head lying in his lap, he began to stroke her hair. Something he'd often done when she did curl up onto him. Looking down into her eyes, he say a slight questionable look, as if wondering if it was acceptable for her to do as she had. He mentally cursed himself, he had inadvertently turned everything upside down. Now something that use to be done without thought, was now something that had to be questioned before. "We certainly have...." He was quite for a moment. Just enjoying the calm silence. Her head in his lap and his fingers through her hair. It all seemed normal. "It's nothing we can't get passed together."

"I'm not lots of women. I'm Amelia, ADA and lover of cute clothes. How am I supposed to exude confidence in a glorified muumuu or pants with an elastic waist band?" It was only after her rant that she noticed his face and that his mind had obviously drifted off somewhere else. The low tension moment was suddenly riled back up again and she wasn't sure what to do. Talking about it would likely cause another argument and upset them both. She wondered if the rest of their lives were going to be like this, or at least for the next eighteen years; walking on eggshells, good moments going sour for little to no reason.

She laid there in the silence, contemplating what the future might hold for the two of them and the baby. Would they be the parents that argued all the time? Would they break up before he or she was even born?

Then there was the fact that their jobs both kept them busy, but more so than that was the types of people they both dealt with on a daily basis. Amelia fought to keep rapists, murderers and drug dealers off the streets, Jackson was front and center in the action that put those people in her courtroom. What if one of those people decided to make good on their threats? What if Jackson was hurt at work or killed? Her mind kept crawling back to those dark places.

The feel of his fingers through his hair comforted her and and she began to drift off, feeling how heavy her eyelids had become. Despite having slept a good portion of the day, she was still exhausted and she had a feeling that was going to become her new normal for the next few months. "I should go to bed. I have to wake up early." Amelia stated, her voice sounding half asleep, though she made no sign of getting up. In fact, her only movement was to curl in closer to him.

She had work tomorrow and she couldn't call in a second time. Even if she had to work less, there were still cases she had been assigned that needed to be taken care of and she'd be in a court room against one of the most difficult criminal defense lawyers in the city in just a few days. She had to get everything in order and she was pretty sure that there was a subpoena or two she had to acquire. All things that would have been done today, had she not called in sick.

After all of this was said and done, she would take on less cases even if it hurt her to do it. Maybe it would be a good thing, though. She would have a chance to reconnect with friends and Jackson. The idea was appealing, but she also loved her job. For so long she had chosen a career over anything else and she wasn't sure if she had the ability to do anything else.

How someone could worry about their outfits when they were going to be pregnant was beyond him. Surely only Amelia would think of such things and not other pregnant women as well. Then again, Jax was always being surprised. "Some sweatpants would suit you fine. They're comfortable, warm, and you could even use some of mine so that you don't have to go out and buy your own!" He thought it was a kind gesture, but as soon as the words were coming out of his mouth, he realized his fault. For Amelia, so tiny and slim, to fit into his bottoms would mean for her to get considerable larger. And he didn't want her to think that. "Sorry," he amended.

As she snuggled closer to him, he inhaled the scent of her. A light floral smell. So calming and so Amelia. For a brief moment he wondered what it would be like to not be with her. To be alone or with another women. For Amelia to be with someone else. Their child raised in two homes. It was a common occurrence, but Jax didn't want that for any of is children. Holidays would be so complicated and if other children were brought into it, it made his head spin.

"It is getting late. You and speck should head off to bed. Don't want to be groggy for work." He managed a weak smile. He himself was extremely exhausted and he was afraid that if her didn't get to bed soon, he'd fall asleep on the sofa and wake up with sore back. Pulling away from Amelia he raised from his seat on the sofa and started to the room. Jax was unsure of whether she's be comfortable with him and her in bed together but at this point, he was too tired to give much concern and thought to it. Sleep was the only thing that mattered.

Slipping into a simple white tee and his boxers, he climbed into bed. He'd never been so anxious and aware of himself in a long while. And all he was doing was going to bed with his pregnant girlfriend, albeit the recent 'scandal'. But before he knew it, he was dosing off into a deep slumber and wouldn't wake up for anything expect his alarm clock.

That night Amelia had been painfully aware that they were both sleeping in the same bed and didn't sleep well. Not because she didn't want him there, but because she couldn't stop imagining him lying there with another girl. She had barely managed to doze off when her alarm went off for her to get ready for work. The sound had never been more unwelcome and she audibly groaned as she rolled out of bed. Four in the morning wasn't a good hour and despite having woken up this early for years now, she still wasn't a morning person and she had a hard time believing that would ever change.

After she showered, she noticed her clothes weren't fitting quite as well as they use to but she forced herself into them anyway. It wasn't noticeable once they were on, but the level of comfort had definitely taken a turn. She huffed at herself in the mirror for a good few moments, slicked her hair back into a pony tail and returned to the bedroom - realizing that Jackson was still passed out in their bed. Did he work today? She wasn't sure, everything in law enforcement was so erratic it was hard to tell. She kissed his forehead, a loving gesture with a hint of hesitation, before making her way to work.

The office was dead for a good hour before the rest of her coworkers came trickling in, then the hustle and bustle began; papers being shuffled around, endless ringing phones, arguments, angry clients. Amelia, despite being distracted by intrusive thoughts of her personal life, gradually through herself into things just like everyone else was doing.

At around ten she found herself in a court room, where she spent most of her day delivering her closing arguments in a domestic abuse case. It was an open and shut case, and he didn't have a particularly good defense attorney. She had her guilty verdict fairly quickly. Still though, she knew she hadn't done the best she could have and that bothered her, worse than if she had lost a case doing her best. Her game was off and it didn't help that she had been starving the entire time.

"Good job in there today, Amy." A voice came from behind her as she was about to exit the building in search of food. She turned her head and was in shock that she recognized the tall, blonde man dressed in a navy suit standing behind her. A smile spread across her face, Carson Lexington, an ex boyfriend - Jackson's predecessor - but more importantly an old friend. They were friends in high school, who had both decided to go to law school and had a brief relationship sometime in between all of that.

"Oh my God, Carson. You scared me? What are you doing here? I haven't seen you in years." She responded, clearly no bad blood between them.

"I just finished up in another courtroom when I heard you were about to wrap yours up as well. Thought I'd stick around and say hi. How are you?" He flashed a dimpled grin at her.

For some reason, that question bothered her and she had done well to avoid it most of the day. She gave her best fake smile and shrugged. "I've been good, working a lot but I can't say I mind it. A lot better than working at Penney's in high school."

They both laughed and continued to chat for a while. He had become a defense attorney after college, taken on a few high profile cases and in general had become pretty successful - just as she had. He invited her to coffee to catch up and she accepted, wanting to catch up with a friend like she hadn't in a while.

At the shop they continued to talk to each other over coffee for about an hour. He told her about his life and she shared about hers - her parents, work, everything. When it came to talking about Jackson though, her voice immediately became guarded and Carson seemed to pick up on it.

"Trouble in paradise then?" He asked, tilting his head to the side slightly. She frowned.

"No...I mean, yes, but it's nothing we can't work out. Stupid stuff really. We both work a lot and it's kind of gotten in the way, you know?" Amelia said, shifting in her seat.

"You deserve someone who respects how hard you work, Amy. I've always admired your drive." His voice grew quieter towards the end, as if he was nervous. At that, Amelia decided it was time she probably left.

"That's sweet, but Jackson does...Like I said, we'll work it out. I better get going. I have to be home soon." She smiled and grabbed her purse, and Carson stood as well - hugging her.

"It was good talking with you and if you ever need someone to talk to, you can always call me." He expressed.

"It was good seeing you too, Carson. Maybe I'll get to kick your ass in a courtroom one day!" She teased, before exiting the coffee shop.

She glanced across the street before hopping into her car, vaguely recognizing the name of the bar across from the coffee shop as the one that Jackson liked to hang out at. Her nerves grew, despite knowing that she had no reason to be anxious about meeting up with a friend for coffee. She wondered if anyone had seen them together and misinterpreted, but she knew it was her paranoid mind after Jackson's incident. Amelia shook her head and pulled out her phone.
