Setting

Arcacello was once known as the cultural capitol of the world, many of the worlds finest arts were came out of and were brought to display here.
The Prefecture neighbors Artomidian prefecture Elysium (prefecture D2) where the capitol city of Holygrounds is located.
During the thawing out period between the A.N.G. and the Stratian Republic, a star port was constructed in Arcaello to boost trade and commerce to the country.
Because of its heightened boost in commerce and its rich culture, Arcacello is also the favored location for many of A.N.G's political powers to reside in, and often times is the chosen spot for diplomatic affairs.
Recently however Arcacello is ruin of its former self as it has been a focal target for the Stratian military to occupy given its starport access, and close proximity to the capitol.
The damage inflicted on Arcacello is so severe that the city itself may never be returned to its former glory.

"Yes, sir," Aster replied coolly, giving a salute as she gave a slight reassuring smile to her comrade, even if he couldn't see it beneath her all-covering helmet. Following her commander along the road, she noticed a blip on her motion scanners around the time Seriph noticed a sound. Ducking behind a fallen tree in what had once probably been some sort of median for the promenade, she raised her rifle, training it on the alley. She wasn't going to fire unless Seriph ordered it, but her trained finger nearly pushed down on the trigger at the sight of the enemy. But, their hands were up, and she wasn't willing to descend to such a level of butchery. Instead, she merely trained her rifle on the targets, and waited for her commander's response. They couldn't drag prisoners along with them, which meant she had a fairly good idea of what that response was probably going to be. She just hoped Vage wouldn't collapse in a vomiting heap again.

"Roger that," Aster said grimly, rising from her cover. She had watched with a sense of regret as Seriph maintained their foes' hope to the very last, then crushed it shamefully. Even she, hardened by years of training and preparation as she was, couldn't help but feel a sense of revulsion. But she staid her hand, and did not interfere. After all, this was all in the name of the greater good, right? Take no prisoners. Let none of those vile murderers escape punishment for their crimes. Those were their orders. And if to slay a demon, she would have to become one herself, then she would just have to watch as she bathed in all of the evils of her nation, taking that sin upon herself, that blood onto her own hands, so as to save her people. There was no black or white on the battlefield - only shades of gray.

"I'm right behind you, sir," She said quietly, keeping her rifle ready as she glanced around, checking for anyone who might have been attracted by the gunshots. They would have to be cautious. Even with the A.N.G. in rout, this was still the enemy's home turf.

"Seriph, Vage, stop! Our orders said nothing about noncombatants!" The sniper exclaimed, trying to calm the situation before it could get out of control. Sadly, this well meant attempt was far too late to change the outcome at all. Once again, the battlefield showed just how gray its true face was, for even though Vage meant well, he did so foolishly, and Aster could not step in without violating her orders. Instead, she was forced to simply watch, and wait for Seriph's next command. She had the feeling that her next target would not be one she would be willing to take down...

"I'm fairly sure our orders said all A.N.G., not all Artomidians. I was under the impression that our job here was to avenge our dead innocents, not pile the bodies higher," Aster said coldly in a very unusual moment of nigh insubordination. It took a great deal to push her to this point, but the killing of innocent civilians was too much for her to bear silently. However, she would not act rashly as Vage had done. She would not and could not make his mistakes. Taking a deep breath, she calmed the anger burning inside her, and gazed coldly at her commander from beneath her helmet.

"However, as you are my commander, I have no choice but to trust in your judgement," She said more composedly. "Vage was my responsibility, as you said before. His insubordination now rests on my shoulders. Let's end this quickly and return to our mission." Gloomily, she accepted her duty, and slinging her rifle under her arm, she moved slowly out of the church behind her commander. She recalled that there were several piles of debris between them and the window Vage had doubtless fled through, which meant they would have to take the long way around. That, she hoped, would give Vage enough time to run and hide so she wouldn't have to commit the loathsome act she dreaded.

Idiot...! She thought angrily, checking to see if he had been fool enough to leave his transponder on. From the look of it, he had. Unless he remembered that little issue quickly, he'd never be able to escape from the vengeful Seriph! Aster had no choice but to pray for her friend, and hope that he would be able to hide out long enough for the Stratians to set up camp. Should he slip back amongst their ranks secretly, he could easily pretend to be a wounded soldier and slip back on a transport to the ring before Seriph's report could reach the ears of the higher-ups. Unfortunately, given how rashly he had acted before, the sniper knew he wouldn't make this prudent choice. No, deep down, she knew exactly what he would do, but she didn't want to believe it. She couldn't believe it.

"He who fights monsters will become a monster, huh?" Aster said with a wry, hollow laugh. "That's just the sort of justification I expected you'd give. It's ironic, though, really. Think of what happened in the aftermath of the Star Maiden incident. Our people swarmed in droves to the recruiting offices, looking to bring the murderers who had done that terrible deed to justice. I know that, because I was in those lines myself, and had the same passionate desire for revenge as everyone else there who had lost a sibling, a spouse or a parent. If we murder their civilians on their own turf, will the public reaction be any different? In the end, we're just giving our enemies the motivation they need to pick up their weapons and defend themselves from the 'evil Stratians.' At that point, it wouldn't matter who started the war. There would be no moral high ground whatsoever, leading both sides to simply slaughter each other endlessly in a pointless battle for revenge. I have faith in our commanders. I don't think they'd be stupid enough to not realize the consequences of committing genocide, when they played a massacre in their own favor so recently. So I suppose my point is this. Don't misread my meaning when I say I'm reluctant to kill noncombatants. It's not out of a sense of idealism, but out of patriotism." The Sniper spoke quietly as she scanned the area, following Vage's transponder signal. He had been a fool and, although she wasn't looking forward to it, she had to follow her orders, no matter what. If that meant offering up her comrade and friend on the altar to her country, then could she do it? She didn't know. But if matters came to it, she had a feeling she'd have to put a bullet in Vage's head no matter what protestations her conscience made, so as to save him even more suffering at the hands of the one giving her the order to shoot.

Damn it...! There's no escaping this, is there...?!

"The fact that there are still noncombatants left shows that not everyone has rallied to join their armies. In any case, what of our own people? One of the worst things you can do is make your enemies into martyrs. At that point, you might as well have proven to even your own supporters that you're the spawn of the devil. Just look at what happened to Vage. I've known him a while, and he's a bit of an idealist. He's not the only one I know of, either. Many Stratians joined the war through a sense of justice, or idealism. Killing innocent civilians would, to them, hearken back to the Star Maiden tragedy. I doubt they'd want a repeat of that, least of all by their own hands. They'd defect, just like Vage did." Aster sighed, checking Vage's position again. They were getting closer to him, but he was still out of sight. Having gotten a head start on them, it would take a while to catch up.

"Fortunately, I'm not one of those idealists I was just talking about, or else I'd be helping Leer by now, so, with all due respect, I would like to request that you stop heaping me into the same category as him. In any case, we're gaining on him. With wounds like the ones you gave him, he won't be able to keep ahead of us for long. Once he's in sniping distance, I'll take him down quickly."

Aster sighed, and didn't bother to respond to Azmeen. His own retorts had made it quite clear that he was a social darwinist rather than a pragmatist, causing their view to differ somewhat. While his plans for a Stratian dominated world made sense in theory, it was also nonsensical to just assume they would win without support. His pride and lack of concern for strategy showed the sniper that this wasn't an argument she would win, no matter how many sensible points she made to the contrary. The best solution would be to just change the subject and let it be.

"I've already loaded up. Alright, he should be somewhere around here," She said, sliding her rifle off her back and glancing around. Sure enough, in the distance, she could see several faint black shapes, one of which she quickly identified as Vage.

"I've spotted him," She said matter-of-factly. "It looks like those civilians are trying to get him away. There's a Jeep coming to pick them up, by the look of it. I'll try to pick him off quickly before he can get in."

A plan was already forming in her mind. The GPS location system of standard Stratian combat armor was in the right shoulder plate, just next to the collar. That was the only reason they were able to track Vage down. With that Jeep coming, if something were to happen to that GPS system, then the two Stratians wouldn't have a chance to catch him. The shot she planned on trying to make was practically impossible to pull off without injuring Vage. On the other hand, Aster was determined to do the impossible, no matter what.

But for this plan to work, she'd have to stall and wait until just before Vage could get into the Jeep to open fire. They would take cover behind the vehicle and escape with him in tow, and if Aster could do it, then everything might still work out. Since Vage was with noncombatants, she was fairly sure he would be safe from any Artomidian government retaliation. This could save him. It had to. This was Aster's only option.

"Here goes nothing," Aster murmured, lining up the weapon, aiming directly at Vage's right shoulder, which was wide open. She knew exactly where the tracking device was, but that wouldn't mean much if she made even the slightest error. Sucking in her breath, she held it for a moment and then...

An earsplitting crack tore through the air, and a single bullet tore toward its target at incredible speeds. In the blink of an eye, the right shoulder plate of Vage's armor had been torn completely apart, scattering metal shards into the air. The force of the impact might very well have been enough to dislocate the Stratian boy's collarbone, just by grazing his protective uniform.

"Damn!" Aster cursed in a very well feigned impression of irritation. "I missed his head. Now those soldiers will know we're after h-" She stopped as she noticed a red warning dot on her suit's motion tracker, alerting her than an unknown being had just entered a small danger zone behind her.

"Contact! He's behind!" The sniper exclaimed, jumping to her feet and spinning around and raising her rifle, scanning the rubble behind them for whatever enemy might have been creeping up on them. This couldn't have come at a better time. The attack from behind would distract both herself and Seriph long enough for Vage to make his getaway. She had shredded his transponder device, and best of all, the A.N.G. now could easily determine he was a deserter, and would probably take him in with open arms. Now that they couldn't pick him off, he was guaranteed to escape. In spite of this, however, Aster couldn't help but nearly shed a tear. From Vage's point of view, he had just been betrayed by a friend. For all he knew, she had tried to kill him. She doubted they would meet again, but if they did, she only hoped he could forgive her for what she had just done.

Leaping aside, the Sniper sprung into action in an instant. Raising her rifle, she took aim at the man's exposed back as he leaped at her commander, and, lining up her shot, fired, trying to get him off of Seriph. She didn't have much time to aim, however, meaning there was a chance she might foul her aim.

(Rolled 11. Missed.)

The recoil was more powerful than she had guessed, and the shot flew high. CQC wasn't her specialty, meaning she needed to get some distance before the mad berserker assaulting them could turn and take her down now that she had begun her counterattack. Leaping over a pile of rubble, she rolled to her feet and readied her weapon once more, taking a little more time to line up her shot. He wouldn't be able to clear the distance before she could fire, which gave her a little more time, and since it looked like he had thrown his weapon, if Seriph managed to dodge it, then it would be all over for the man, now disarmed, and with Aster's rifle trained on his head.

(Rolled 15. Hit.)

As Ryunosuke spoke, a loud crack tore through the air, cutting him off mid sentence. Aster smirked, watching as her shot tore a deep gash along his leg. She had overcompensated for her weapon's recoil again, but she'd still hit him.

"Quit your posturing, Artomidian murderer, and die quietly. I'm in no mood to listen to a headstrong idiot flaunting his stupidity," Aster hissed, her voice rendered somewhat dull and distorted by her helmet. As she spoke, she started lining up her next shot. The spearman would probably come at her now, which meant she'd need to be ready.

......

A quiet whirr sounded out over the city as 10 shapes darted across rooftops, shooting over the rubble-filled streets with an inhuman agility. Aerionelle checked her jump pack's fuel. It would last long enough to get to the evacuation point. There was just a little way left to go. If they could just stay ahead of the Stratian airforce blockade, then they'd be home free. They just had to outrun their pursuers a little longer. Just a little longer...!

The rest of Aerionelle's squad noticed around the time she did. Several black shapes had appeared on the horizon, and were coming in fast.

"We've got fighters!" She exclaimed. "Head for cover! Our evac Dracos can't make it to us here! You'll have to take your chances on the ground!" Powering up her jump pack, she launched herself forward, outstripping her squadmates and shooting ahead of them.

"Aeri, what about you?" One of her comrades asked, concern evident in his voice. Aerionelle just grinned beneath her helmet.

"Do you need to ask? I'm going to provide a distraction. You guys get some distance. We'll meet back up at the rendezvous point."

"Whatever you say, Aeri. Just don't die on us. After that bet we made this morning, you still owe us all drinks once we make it to Holygrounds."

"I don't intend to."

And with that, the blue bullet shot away from the rest of her squadron. They'd been flying lower than her, which meant that they were probably out of the incoming Stratian fighters' view. Once she pulled away, she was pretty blasted sure those fighters would follow. Her jump pack had enough special modifications that it could keep her in the lead for about 30 seconds. After that, she'd be in range of their guns. That meant she had that long to lose them.

Leaping across a road, she landed on a tall office building across the way, rolled over the roof, and then dropped straight down for the street below, igniting her jump pack after a few seconds of falling and barely pulling up in time to launch her way through a parking garage across the way. Crashing through a glass door, she didn't even slow down, breaking out a window and dropping into a small alley below. Kicking in her jets at the last second, she slowed herself down enough to make the landing, and crashed into the ground below, the shock absorbers in her armor's legs sparing her bones from being turned to dust by the force of the impact. Bounding forward with a rocket assisted jump, Aerionelle darted into a small alleyway, then threw herself down under a pile of rubble. Her 30 seconds were up, but she'd like to see those jets find her after that insane little stunt. She dropped her armor's power levels, hoping to thus avoid detection by the Stratian pilots' scanners. She just hoped her team had made it safe and sound.

"Roger that," The sniper replied, hurling her own smoke canister at the lancer's feet, enveloping the entire area in a canopy of smoke. Seriph's form was outlined in green by her HUD's friendly location tracker, so it was no difficulty to quickly roll from behind cover, jump to her feet and make her getaway alongside him, keeping her rifle trained on the cloud of smoke in case their enemy decided he was suicidal enough to try pursuit. She'd rather not be left behind on enemy turf, which meant they had to get out, fast.

With one last look toward the truck disappearing into the distance, Aster let go of what she had just done and focused her thoughts on what was to come. She had taken a shot at her only friend, but it had been to save his life. That was a good enough reason, right? It was an acceptable loss. Such sacrifices were made each and every day in wartime! This was just another thing she would have to bear. Vage was alive, and had a civilian to vouch for him, meaning he had some fairly good chances he would survive, although Aster didn't doubt he would be universally ostracized for his "heresy." But that didn't matter. Vage would live, and that was all that was important.

This too shall pass. Even this.
