John was born into a wealthy merchant family. His family always had money, and they lived relatively well deep in the heart of the Old US. Like John's father, and his father, John took up the business of the family and did what he could to expand it. With the years, his income increased, he made more profit, and he began to expand the businesses into New England and California, and he has money in the various banks from which he profits even greater due to the interest rates.
With the war between the Old US and the Confederates, John became more and more bold in his business methods. He began to invest in the weapon industry, textile industry and even in the agricultural industry. Recently he had gone missing for a whole three days and then turned up at Blacksburg, carried by an armed man, soaked in blood but not even suffering from a scratch. John's protector died hours after they arrived in Blacksburg, and John himself seemed rather frantic as he made a quick deal with the "D&M Personal Protection" where he wanted mercenaries to get him out of the city and as far away from the front lines as possible. He didn't even bother to argue with the price and paid the first quarter in cash, promising that he would pay the other quarter when they were halfway and the rest when they were far away enough.
