Jason Tetrick

"Sorry to disturb you... but I have a few questions that need answering. Got a moment?"

0 · 1,059 views · located in Quarantize City

a character in “A Secret World”, as played by CJL1290

Description

Image

"The most rewarding thing about this job is... it's always interesting. The people, the crime scenes, and the information you learn; almost like it's a real mystery movie, and I'm a part of it. Hell, this whole city is one big mystery on it's own."

BASIC INFORMATION

Image

Name: Jason Tetrick
"Pleasure to meet you."

Age: 27
"I'm getting up there; still pretty young though."

Gender: Male
"What...? Was that a serious question?"

Race: Human (1/2 American, 1/2 Japanese)
"Dear old dad found love on vacation in Japan. Pretty cheesy 'eh?"

Theme Song: Howling / Abingdon Boys School

Allegiance: Neutral
"I'm not on anyone's side. I just need to find out where all this fighting is coming from, and stop it."

APPEARANCE
Image
Hair Color: Black

Eye Color: Black

Description: Jason has a rather rugged look to him, with his trimmed facial hair, wild short hair and tired looking eyes from working long nights as a detective. He is a bit tall and his skin has a light tone to it. His black eyes usually has a tired look to them, but they also look alert and scanning as well. He normally wears dark clothing, favoring a black vest, dark grey shirt, and black tie, with a long black trench coat covering most of his clothing. Black pants and shoes goes along with it, and a detectives badge is pinned on his coat over his heart while on duty.

Combat Attire: Usually wears the same as he normally wears, but without the badge pinned to his coat, and wears black gloves.

Notable Features: Jason doesn't really stand out too much, other than the fact he mostly seems to have a cigarette in his mouth, sometimes unlit.

Accessories: His badge while on duty. Other than that, no accessories.

STATE OF MIND

Status: Married with a daughter
"I love my wife, and my kid's gonna be something special when she grows up. I have to make sure this city is a safe place for her future."

Preference: Heterosexual
"Once again... married with a kid."

Personality: Jason is a very serious and down to Earth kind of guy. He knows that in his line of work, you have to take everything seriously. However, this doesn't stop him from trying to squeeze out as much enjoyment from his job as he can, and cracking jokes to his fellow co-workers. In all honesty, he hates all work and no play, which gets him a mixed reception from those around him.

Jason is polite and well mannered, and much rather talk things out then to argue with someone, and he always seems to have his emotions in check. He was once referred to as "cold eyes" by his director when a suspect pulled a gun on him one day, and Jason calmly talked him to dropping the gun and turning himself in - all without blinking or flinching.

Likes: Night work, smoking, sleeping, taking care of his family, guns, coffee made right, being outside after midnight.

Dislikes: Doing nothing, fighting with his wife, conflict, going too long without a smoke, and no smoking areas.

Hobbies: Gun training, getting sleep when he can, going for walks, relaxing, research.

Image

EQUIPMENT

Weapons: Jason actually has a wide variety of weapons, knowing that he's only human in this angel vs. demon world. He only carries a few at a time however. He never leaves home without his two Beretta 92 Biliennium's, with extra ammo of normal, stun, or explosive rounds all in separate magazines. the stun rounds have a blue stripe on the magazine, while the explosive ones have a red stripe. The stun rounds are like being hit with a tazer, while the explosive rounds explode on contact, but the explosion is small enough that you would think a gunpowder firecracker hit you; small enough to prevent massive collateral damage, but strong enough to knock someone off their feet (the explosive rounds were custom made and illegal, so he only uses them at night). His pistols are tucked away in a double shoulder holster underneath his trench coat.

Other weapons are in his personal cache at home (Which his daughter keeps trying to break into).

Close-Range: Although he prefers to shoot from a distance, he wears a stun gauntlet on both arms when out at night. The forearm protectors help him block melee attacks, and the gauntlet's stun ability helps him pack the strength of a tazer into a punch. He also carries a combat knife just in case.

Fighting Style: Jason prefers to shoot from a distance, knowing that fighting a hybrid with special abilities is dangerous enough just being the human that he is. Of course, he rather use words to sort out his problems, but if push comes to shove, he will try to stick with his stun rounds and gauntlets to incapacitate an opponent instead of killing them; he will only take someone's life if he has to.

Abilities: Just being a human, he doesn't have many abilities. His senses are keener compared to the average human, and his mind works like a computer, analyzing and coming up with solutions. He is also a quick learner; if anyone was willing to teach him something, he'd pick it up quickly.

HISTORY

Personal Background: Jason grew up and lived in Quarantize City all his life. From his youth, he always wondered why he had to be home before midnight, and why his parents never explained it to him. One night, their family was returning home, when their car broke down, It was near midnight , and Jason's family started to panic, doing what ever they could to get the car started again. Soon enough, a couple of minutes after midnight, several Cambions emerged from the shadows and started to chase after the family, forcing the confused and terrified 12 year old Jason to run for his life, along with his family. He was separated from them and surrounded by 2 of the aggressors, ready to take his, and his family's life away.

It didn't happen.

A Nephilim intervened with a blade as beautiful as she was, and struck down the two surrounding him. She smiled at the terrified boy as she dashed over to help his parents escape. Jason at this point was absolutely awestruck. This beautiful angel with wings that almost radiated pure light hopped from one demon to the next, cutting them down and saving his parents; it was the most amazing thing he'd ever seen! He was so entranced by her he didn't notice the demon charging at him, with a broadsword at the ready. The angel saw it coming, but didn't have enough time to react. There was only one thing she could of done to save Jason's life.

Jason shut his eyes, seeing his death approaching. In 5 seconds, he opened them again to see the angel had gotten herself impaled, saving Jason from the death blow. Drops of her blood landed on his face, as his expression turned horrified. The angel slowly turned her head to face him.

"R...run...!" She choked.

Jason's parents scooped him up and started running as fast as they could. The sounds of the demons laughing with blood lust as more arrived only sent chills down his spine as the angel's screams of anguish was heard over the sounds of steel cutting into flesh.

He would never forget that day.

As soon as he was old enough, Jason joined the police force and eventually became a detective, curious in finding out what this bloodbath of a war was about. A detective for the city by day, and a detective of Cambions and Nephilims for his own personal reasons by night, he was determined to put an end to this war, before it spills over to his world. That resolve only strengthened when he got married and had his first child. Now it's to protect them as well.

"Who knows? Maybe I feel exalted at the thought of living in a large place. Maybe I'm planning to turn this place into an apartment again. Maybe I even plan to build my own mansion here. The point I'm making is why am I being questioned by the choice of abode I chose for myself by someone with no authority to be here."

Allan just took his hand off her shoulder and lazily put his palm up against the middle of his face. With all these things stressing him he just wanted to pull his own face off like it was melted cheese. After listening to her haughty response he remembered just why he didn't like talking to people. "Ugh... Forget I said anything."

Speaking of melting that train of thought brought the gross heat of someone else's body on his hands. The feeling of a persons body heat on any part of him was just plain uncomfortable. As it was he just wanted to take the one hand he was still holding her arm with and dunk it in a bucket of ice so he can bring that sense of placid numbness back. There was something else to her body now that he was dwelling on the subject. It was an almost alien sensation, one he had never felt before. It wasn't necessarily unpleasant but he was unable to know what it was that he was sensing about her. Nonetheless he was uncomfortable just being around her right now. He didn't really have any business being all the way out there anymore.

"The place is clean, I didn't turn up with anything. Officer Allan, you can un-cuff her. We have other places we need to go."

Without another word he fished out the key to the cuffs and popped them open. Quite frankly he was happy to just let her go, not just because of her body temperature disturbing his status quo but also because of that unfamiliar resonance that could be felt when he was near her. With the cuffs in hand he folded them up and tucked them back in their holster before heading on over to the passengers seat of Jason's car.

"Let's go, the trail's getting cold."

He was well ready to get going. "Well, what now?" He asked as Jason was getting in.

"Well then, I must admit that this won't make it into my list of favorite evenings."
She watched the car retreat out of view. Tired from that dialogue exchange, she headed back inside the building and picked up a stone from the ground. Reaching the second floor landing, she casually tossed it to the side, reactivating everything else. The ghosts, the familiars, the portals and the other traps in the atelier. She headed back inside her office via the passage she taught Shino.
"Well, thanks to those two, I now have an excuse to try out something I wanted to try for a long time now."
She finally threw her body on the covers. It was nice to get a good night's rest after that ordeal. She wondered about that security guard though. He might be a Nephilim since he exhibited the same kind of unease that she had when they were close together.

The next morning...
Shino was kneeling in front of Risaya, who was doing something to one of the walls, with her arms on her lap.
"Ummm...Boss? It's okay if you don't bring in my pay for this month. I'll even reimburse it myself. In installments."
"Next time you have trouble like that, try not to risk the building? What do you think would happen if they found out the armory?"
"I'll assume that they'll think you're some kind of nut. The armory doesn't even have any weapons! It's just the place where you store all your dolls and thingies that we don't know if they will even work. They'll only be suspicious if they find something shaped like a gun or a sword. What is a weapon to you, may not seem like a weapon for everyone."
"Aha! And now I'm getting lectured by the cause of the problem? Want me to dock your pay for another month?"
"Aaahh!!! No, please, I'm sorry!"
Risaya finished drawing up some sort of circle in the wall. Shino looked closer on the engraving. It didn't seem familiar. Chinese calligraphy perhaps? She walked over to Risaya as she was searching the shelves for something.
"Still, to be able to trick them like that, just how strong of a Magus are you Boss?"
"If I were to be ranked by the association, I'll be around rank thirty, or something."
"There are stronger Magus than you? That aside, how did you do that anyway?"
"It's a simple trick of the eye. The Fujyuo highlights were designed with symmetry in mind so, all buildings initially looked the same. By manipulating the mirror world of the Kaleidoscope, what we were looking at was the interiors of the adjacent structure. Of course, it can still be broken if they reached out to touch something, so I have to trick their senses even more with the Bounded field. Even if they grabbed something, they won't truly see it for what it is unless I wanted them to. It's really stressful maintaining it up since I had to completely occupy their hearing with my mindless ramblings. Oh, found it!"
Risaya took out a large bottle of red liquid and set it on the table. She poured some contents into a beaker and examined it.
"Hey Boss? What's that?"
"Dragon's blood. It's for using that new form of going in and out of this building. Basically, ingest a small portion of it to your own blood and you should be able to travel between other circles via the dragon's ley lines. Wait a minute--"
Risaya left to take something from her room. Curious about the effects, she took the beaker and drank it. She keeled over to the floor, holding her mouth as the liquid cascaded down her throat. Risaya immediately helped her up and propped her on the chair.
"Shino...you weren't supposed to drink it all. That's why I took out the syringe. A small amount is fine."
"Aarrgghh!!! It tastes like burned toast! How do I look?"
"See for yourself."
Shino walked over to the mirror. Her eyes turned into a deep, reptilian red, similar to a crocodile. Similar to a dragon.
"Aaahh!!! What am I gonna do?"
"I don't know. You're half-dragon now, figure it out yourself."
Risaya answered in an annoyed kind of way. Dragons are ranked even higher than angels and demons in the other world. Being a Nephilim is one thing. Being a half-dragon gives you much more.
"Hey, what if anyone I know sees this? What will I tell them? How will I face them now?"
"I don't know maybe, try using your brain before jumping to stupid things that are out of your control?"
"Boss, this is serious!"
"So am I."
Shino sulked as she lay face-down on the sofa. Risaya looked through some stuff and took out a pair of glasses.
"Here. This should divert the attention off. Try not to think like a dragon. Think of yourself as still Shino."
Shino did as she was told. Checking up on her a few minutes later, Risaya saw that the reptilian features on her eyes were gone. Her eyes were still red but now, they looked more like her own.
"Well, it worked."
Still worried about her pursuers, Shino inquired about the properties of the bounded field.
"Hey Boss? In the off-chance that they saw my face, will that memory be affected by the field too?"
"Yes, as long as it's anything within this area. They'll probably mistake your features for someone else's or when the time comes, they won't be able to describe what you look like. It's the same thing that's going on with me."
"I guess. Even when people ask me what you look like, I can't describe you at all. I can't remember any features you have, the color of your hair, your eyes, even your height and stature. Isn't it hard socializing because of it?"
"That's why I don't go out often. My Origin is "forgetfulness" and, as someone with an awakened Origin, all people I interact with are bound to forget me anytime. Those two won't even remember what I look like later."
Risaya turned to her assistant and gazed at her eyes.
"I wonder how long it takes until you forget me completely as well..."
"Hey Boss, I mean, Risaya-san, don't say sad things like that. I'm still here. You're not alone just yet."
"Well, you won't be forgetting about me anytime soon. I'll probably stay here for a few more years. That's right. I was just whining with no attention to form..."
"Risaya-san?"
"They should've forgotten all about your physical appearance by this time. Go now and find that Mackenzie and bring him under police custody."
"All right, I'm off!"
Shino took a good look at the dragon circle and absorbed every detail of it. She took a deep breath and walked inside, emerging somewhere behind the building.

Jason slowly drove down the road. He heard Allan's question earlier, but was still trying to get his thoughts under control. He felt fine now, but he still didn't understand what happened earlier. He felt like memories of that place were slowly fading. How many floors were in that place again?

He dismissed it for now; he searched, he found nothing. It was time to move on.

"Okay, this is what were going to do. The other two addresses that we wrote down earlier, where going to check out those places too, but not tonight. It's getting late enough as it is and you've been away from your post too long. Besides, I have to go a take care of the body in the alleyway, write a report, and other annoying amounts of paperwork from everything that happened tonight. I'm dropping you back off at the mall."

When the car pulled up at the mall, he copied the addresses down on the notepad before handing one to Allan. He also went and handed him one of his cards as well. "Tomorrow, just call or text me when you're ready, and we'll meet at one of the two locations, which we'll discuss which one at that time. Don't worry, I'll contact your supervisor and clear things up if you need me to, so just give me a heads up. I'm going to make sure we solve this, and make sure this hard work didn't go to waste."

He leaned back in his seat and fished out his phone, punching a number in. "I have to admit though, you handled yourself pretty well tonight. Ever think of joining the police? No offense to mall security, but I think your skills would be better put to use in the QCPD."

"Alright, I have to make a call so I'll see you later."

After dropping Allan off and calling in about the body, he felt at ease that he didn't have to go take care of it himself. He needed some sleep; he worked both a day and night shift today.

Arriving home, he walked home and head towards his bedroom where his wife was sound asleep. He removed his weapons and gear and changed into his pajamas; a t-shirt and boxers.

Slipping into bed quietly not to wake her, Rachel peeked through one eye groggily and smiled when she noticed her husband was home safe and sound. She cuddled up next to him and fell asleep again quickly.

Jason smirked himself before he started to feel sleep overtake him as well. This was the perfect reminder for him that all this work wasn't just for the city, but for his family as well.

The next morning, Jason was in his office. He put his pen down with a yawn. The paperwork was finally finished. He leaned back and listened to the sounds of the police department outside and around his office, bustling with activity as usual. Phones constantly ringing, the low hum of chatter, the knock on his door...

Knock on his door? He snapped back to reality when his door opened, and his boss walked in.

"Oh, good morning sir!" Jason greeted him.

"Morning. Did you finish the paperwork from last night?"

"Yes sir, here it is."

He scooped it off his desk and handed to him. His superior gave them a quick glance and smiled.

"Good job Tetrick. Now, how's the Mackenzie case coming along?"

Jason thought about his progress with the case. Next to nothing. He was assigned it yesterday, but got distracted with his own personal business. "To be honest sir, not much so far. I heard he hangs around North Boulevard, but that's it so far."

"Well... don't take too long to hop on it Detective Tetrick. We need to find this guy and place him under police protection while we find out what happened to him. Who knows if someone is after his life to silence him from spilling what he saw."

"Any clues to who the culprit could be sir?"

"Well, most people think it's Big Sniper, a killer who's been rising in popularity lately."

Jason remembered hearing that title once or twice before. All assassinations by sniping, and no one has been able to track him down. He was high on the police's Most Wanted list, and he even heard talk of the department planning to hand out a cash reward for information leading to their arrest soon. The amount hasn't been discussed yet, but he knew it would get higher as the assassinations continued.

"I have to take care of some business. Keep up the good work, Detective."

His boss walked out and his door closed behind him, once again muffling the sounds of the department he was in. He had a lot of work to do today. He might need to pull another night shift if things get too hectic. Sighing, he reached for the mug on his desk and took a sip of the coffee he bought earlier. He made a disgusted face before putting it back down.

"Ugh... doesn't anyone know how to make good coffee anymore?"

"Okay, this is what were going to do. The other two addresses that we wrote down earlier, where going to check out those places too, but not tonight. Besides, I have to go a take care of the body in the alleyway, write a report, and other annoying amounts of paperwork from everything that happened tonight. I'm dropping you back off at the mall."

They pulled up right back at the mall where all this craziness took off. Jason handed him a paper with the addresses copied down as well as one of his cards.

He nodded, stepping out of the car after pocketing the cards he was handed.

"I have to admit though, you handled yourself pretty well tonight. Ever think of joining the police? No offense to mall security, but I think your skills would be better put to use in the QCPD."

He looked back to see Jason speaking to him from his car.
"If they pay better and they're willing to hire me you can count on it." Was his response. His dedication to this job was based purely on the fact they were hiring and he needed the cash. He knew for a fact that the police force paid better but without much job history or references he didn't stand much of a chance.

"Alright, I have to make a call so I'll see you later."

"Right, see ya." He bid his new acquaintance farewell before turning around and walking back into the mall through the same way he left. He locked the storage door behind him and proceeded into the shop. As he got in he proceeded back through the opening in the mesh fence and locked it closed like it was supposed to be.

Luck had spared him this day as apparently the guard who was supposed to relieve him for his lunch break had been busy with the other guards as the time right around that particular hour was lunch break for many of the guards. He got his break a little later than usual but in this rare instance late was good.

The night went rather uneventfully since then. Dawn arrived and then a couple hours later the day guard came by to relieve him of his post. The guy was five minutes late but after all the crap he had to put up with today some dude being a little tardy seemed rather minor in comparison. He handed his radio in and signed out, leaving the mall and heading on back home.

As he got back home he felt tired. Not just the regular kind of tired after a day of hard work but nearly passing out on his feet tired. He just barely managed to brush his teeth and get out of his uniform before going straight to sleep on the bed.

It was the strangest sleep he's had. He didn't have a single dream that night but that was not all. He felt rather ill all throughout as if his body were fighting some sort of infection. He's never gotten sick before in his past so the feeling was completely new to him. Needless to say he didn't sleep very well.

The next day

He woke up from his restless night. A fine sheen of sweat had gathered on his forehead while he slept. He sat up and rubbed the sleepiness from his eyes. He felt quite low as if he had barely gotten any sleep that night. Looking over he saw the clock read six thirty PM. Six thirty in the evening!? I've slept twelve hours and yet it's like I haven't slept a wink. He was surprised by just how bad he was feeling despite the amount of sleep he's had. He dismissed it as just him sleeping badly and got into his morning routine.

He took his time with eating breakfast. Yesterday was the last day he had to work for the week. The company he worked for could only allot so many hours to someone, the time exceeding that going into overtime pay. If there was one thing the company he worked for loathed to part with more than anything else it was money. Hence, after working his share of work for the week he had at least three days off before he had to go back.
I could use that time to see about applying for the police force He plotted his course of action for the remaining week while he finished off his bowl of dry CheeriO's.

As it was, he just wanted to go back to bed and sleep straight through to tomorrow but he remembered that Jason wanted him to call today so they could go back to one of those places they checked out and investigate. He lazily picked the phone up and dialed the number on the card as he walked with the phone out of his apartment onto the front steps of the apartment.

He sat at the bottom step of his apartment complex, phone up against his ear as he waited for the guy to pick up. He was dressed in a casual ensemble of a plain white t-shirt which could definitely use a bleaching considering the faded miscellaneous stains covering a good portion of it, a pair of old beat up blue jeans and a set of well worn out sneakers. The sneakers had a hole right in them right in front of the right foots big toe.

He watched as people close to his age walked home along his street, fresh from school. He didn't feel very comfortable with the number of people in his general area but he put that discomfort aside while he waited for Jason to pick up the phone.

Jason turned the keys in his office door, locking it. His work day was over and he was thinking about what to do.

"Tetrick!"

Jason turned to the call of his name to see his supervisor walk over to him.

"Sir?"

"Things have changed. We just got a call from some of our officers, telling us the location of Ayers Mackenzie. I need you to go and get him."

Jason's eyebrows raised in question. "Not to question your judgement sir... but why me? Wouldn't this be more suitable for several officers to go and pick him up for protection?"

"Not exactly. Mackenzie is a wanted man by no doubt multiple parties. If police cars go tearing through the streets to get this guy, it's going to be too noticeable and pull up too much suspicion. We need him alive, not ventilated with bullet holes. That's why we need to make this as low-key as possible. That's why I want you to go. This is your case anyway, isn't it?"

Jason nodded his head in understanding. It made sense; a police convoy, or any police cars for that matter would instantly draw suspicion in an area where crime doesn't happen all too often. It could lead to a shootout, or someone getting hurt. They had to assume that the people after him, or even Big Sniper themselves would be prepared to kill at a moments notice. It would truly suck to be this guy right now; poor guy is probably terrified.

"Very well sir, i'll make my way to him at once." He couldn't turn down his responsibility. Serving the community came first, his quest for knowledge on Nephlims and Cambions came second.

"Good, take this with you."

Jason's supervisor handed him a file folder with a badge on top.

"The folder has the address and anything else you'd need to know on this guy. As for the badge..."

Jason picked it up and examined it. It looked like the badge he had but the name on it was different: Allan Denton.

"You said you'd be meeting that kid today right? Take him with you. If he's as good as you say he is, I have no reason to disbelieve you. Tell me how he handles when this is over, and I'll consider putting him on the force."

Jason smirked as he pocked the badge and tucked the folder under his arm. He felt pretty good on how well his supervisor trusted him. "Thank you sir, I'll be sure to let him know."

His supervisor smiled and pat him on the shoulder. "Now, get going."

Jason nodded and exited the building heading for the car lot. Along the way, his phone started vibrating.

"Ah, that must be Allan."

He reached his car and pulled out his phone. He answered it and put it to his ear.

"Allan, I'm glad you called. Look things have changed. I'll explain it on the way, but I'm going to come and get you now."

He stepped into the car and shut the door before tossing the file and badge into the glove box.

"Where should I pick you up?"

"Allan, I'm glad you called. Look things have changed. I'll explain it on the way but I'm going to come and get you now. Where should I pick you up?"

Jason had finally answered his phone. "Yeah, I'm-" His words were cut off when he suddenly had a massive yawn. Given the length of his yawn he was positively exhausted. "Yeah, I'll be down at the bus stop on Willard Avenue." He gave the location he could be found at after he regained control of his jaw muscles. Considering just how low he felt right then he didn't know how much use he was going to be to him.

With some effort he got up off the front steps and staggered vaguely in the direction he wanted to go. His feet dragged like he was pulling a ball & chain with each foot and his arms hanged in front of his forward drooping body like listless vines. He couldn't really explain just how he could feel so dragged down. He blamed it on poor sleep but he never really suffered from poor rest like this. His divine energy usually rejuvenated him to the point of not feeling like the clothes he was wearing weighed fifty pounds a piece. "What on Earth is wrong with me today?" He spoke to himself as he walked across the street and onwards towards his stop.

He finally pulled himself over to the bus stop sign on the closer edge of the street. Students and other adolescents rather close to his age were waiting at this stop for whatever reason Allan couldn't be bothered to figure out right now. He just slowly plodded over to a public bench and sat down. With his whole upper body lurched forward he braced elbows against his knees and set his head upon his hands like an ancient idol upon a stone pedestal. There he sat, his face in a sort of apathetic daze as he waited for Jason to pick him up. At this point he really didn't even notice what the other people at this stop were doing.

Jason pulled up at the location that Allan gave him over the phone. He pulled over and looked over at the bus stop, scanning to see if he could find him amongst the small crowd. Finally spotting him he, rolled down his window. He noticed how... casual he looked. Jason mentally shrugged; if that was comfortable for him, who was he to judge?

"Hey. Let's go, were short on time."

When Allan got in, he started heading to North Boulevard. Once again, it was explanation time.

"Alright, what we're doing now is getting a man named Ayers Mackenzie. You may have heard about Big Sniper, and they say he's a witness to one of their assassinations. He's at North Boulevard and we're going to put him in protective police custody. If this goes smoothly, we'll have enough time to investigate the case from yesterday."

Jason's radio sparked to life as he heard something about a jewelry store being robbed.

-KSHRRT- "Attention all units, a jewelry store off of Bradmere Lane has just been robbed. I repeat, a jewelry store off of Bradmere Lane has just ben robbed. All nearby units, please respond."

Really? Now? Just why was this city so lively today? It didn't matter; he had his assignment. The other officers would take care of it.

"Anyway, if you check the glove box, you can see a file on the man we're going to collect. There's also a temporary badge for you in there. Pin it anywhere you want, as long as it's visible. My supervisor told me to report how you do today, and if you do well he'll consider putting you on the force."

Jason made a quick left as he was getting closer to North Boulevard. "Oh, and there's a spare gun I keep in there too. You can borrow it if you want."

After a moment of driving, Jason finally noticed just how drained Allan looked. Almost sickly.

"Hey... are you feeling okay? You look like you didn't get any sleep at all last night. You also look a little sick."

He reached out and placed a hand on Allan's forehead for a couple seconds, hoping he didn't make him feel awkward in the process.

"Huh. You're kinda warm too." He mentioned, wiping same of the sweat on his hand in his pant leg.

Allan was looking towards the cement in a dreary fashion, not really paying attention to his environment like he should.

"Hey. Let's go, were short on time."

He heard Jason pull up to him in his car. He took his time getting to his feet before getting in the passengers seat. Once in he put his seat belt on and off they were again.

Suddenly the radio kicked to life. "Attention all units, a jewelry store off of Bradmere Lane has just been robbed. I repeat, a jewelry store off of Bradmere Lane has just ben robbed. All nearby units, please respond." It crackled.
Huh. Typical police stuff I guess. He figured, still listening to what Jason had to say.

"Anyway, if you check the glove box, you can see a file on the man we're going to collect. There's also a temporary badge for you in there. Pin it anywhere you want, as long as it's visible. My supervisor told me to report how you do today, and if you do well he'll consider putting you on the force."

He opened the glove box and collected both the file on Ayers Mackenzie as well as the badge. Great. Today's my day to show how I handle being a cop and I'm exhausted and I haven't even had my coffee yet. He mentally griped about the pressure that was suddenly on him as he pinned the temporary badge on his shirt. He yawned again, not quite as big a yawn but still a lengthy one. He wasn't feeling as tired now that he had some time to wake up but he was still pretty low.

"Oh, and there's a spare gun I keep in there too. You can borrow it if you want."

Allan's eyebrows went up a little bit. He didn't expect to be handling a gun as he technically wasn't a police officer quite yet. "It's alright. I'll take it if it looks like it'll be absolutely necessary. We're just picking a witness or something right?" He didn't take the gun for now but committed it to memory just in case. He was already flipping through the pages on the file, skimming over the details which seemed pertinent to him.

As they were going on Jason seemed to catch on that he wasn't feeling one hundred percent fine.

"Hey... are you feeling okay? You look like you didn't get any sleep at all last night. You also look a little sick."

Jason brought it up. Suddenly without much prompt Jason had reached out and put his hand over his forehead. "Huh. You're kinda warm too." He observantly pointed out before taking his hand off. He was right in that regard but Allan didn't want the topic to suddenly move onto him seeing as how he was being tested for the police force that very minute.

"Yeah, I don't think I slept very well. Anyways, yesterday you mentioned something relating to that whole business relating to some supernatural stuff involving Nephilims and... Cambions? I think that's what you called them. Anyways, I was hoping to talk with you more about that since you seem to know quite a bit about that stuff and I have something that might relate to what you were talking about." Perhaps not the best conversational segue but then again Allan was never a great conversationalist. He looked around, checking out the windows and such. They had some privacy inside the car but not enough for him to be comfortable showing his power off in it. "I think it'd be best if I showed you what I mean somewhere people can't get a peek. I'd rather keep it discreet and such." He most certainly fumbled his words but hopefully his meaning came across in the way he hoped it did.

He had only just met this guy and now this guy was probably going to be the first other person to see this. The thought made him almost squirm in his seat but after hearing a bit about what the guy knew about all this supernatural stuff he wouldn't have much hope of finding out more without showing a little of his side of the story.

A show and tell.

"Yeah, I don't think I slept very well. Anyways, yesterday you mentioned something relating to that whole business relating to some supernatural stuff involving Nephilims and... Cambions? I think that's what you called them. Anyways, I was hoping to talk with you more about that since you seem to know quite a bit about that stuff and I have something that might relate to what you were talking about."

Jason's curiosity peaked and turned his head to Allan, eyes widening and wondering what he could probably show him. The whole Ayers Mackenzie thing could wait.

"I think it'd be best if I showed you what I mean somewhere people can't get a peek. I'd rather keep it discreet and such."

Jason nodded and started looking for anywhere... discreet. If he needed a quiet place to show him whatever he had, does that mean he had powers or something? Or video proof of a supernatural? He had to see this.

Soon finding an alleyway, he stepped out the car and walked inside. Jason found himself getting anxious, so he pulled out a cigarette and lit it quickly. He didn't have a reason to distrust Allan or whatever he says.

"Ok Allan, show me." He said with a smirk. He tried to look calm on the outside. On the inside, he was bouncing off the walls giddy like a child on a sugar high. If Allan really did have some feasible proof, he could finally see some powers and abilities first hand.

Allan followed Jason as they stepped from the car and into an alleyway. Jason had lit up a smoke right there, not exactly fun to breath but he moved that thought aside to concentrate on more concerning matters.

"Ok Allan, show me."

He looked to the left then to the right, examining the openings of this alley to make sure they weren't being watched particularly close by any passers-by. Jason seemed calm enough but he was watching quite intently.

"I'm gonna do the thing I was talking about. Ready? Right, here goes nothing." He said, trying his best to prepare the guy since he wasn't quite sure how his new cop acquaintance might react to this. Maybe he'd overreact? Maybe he'd underreact? He hoped for neither, just maybe enough of a reaction to not make him feel silly about talking around the bush like so but not so much as to suddenly cause this guy to draw his gun and start firing at him.

He held up his hand and concentrated for a moment. The hand started to faintly shimmer a dim sky blue color but it was little more than a dim aura. The shine just barely pigmented his hand with it's divine hue, a pale shadow of what it was just yesterday. As confused or amazed or interested as Jason might of been at this display Allan was just as much so but only confused. The hell!? This is hardly even a glimmer. Is this why I'm feeling so down? What happened between yesterday to bring my energy so low? His questions seemed to stack on top of themselves.

"So yeah, I've got these powers but I don't know too much about them. To tell you the truth though for some reason I've been greatly weakened since last night. Normally it's way more flashy." He explained himself to him. He probably didn't need to explain why his hand wasn't as bright as it should be since Jason probably had no frame of reference for measuring this particular phenomenon.

All I did last night was follow that thief to some buildings. That was it... Oh yeah, there was also the creepy woman. How'd I almost forget that? I swear I couldn't shake those heebie jeebies if I wanted to. And her self righteous yakking, god that was annoying. Yeah... Now that I think about it there was something off about that whole sequence. That's the only moment that might have the slightest thing to do with this.

The mysterious drain on energy and the inexplicably unaffected recollection of the event back at the worn down empty building, related or perhaps just coincidence? Allan could only pull at loose threads in his head while he was busy illuminating his current partner to his side of the story regarding the supernatural goings-on.

Jason's mouth hung open almost enough for the cigarette to fall out. Allan's hand was glowing a dim yet brilliant sky blue.

He's heard and maybe seen some powers at a distance or pictures, but to see it up close and personal; it was a moment he wouldn't forget anytime soon. What were the chances of his new partner he met yesterday having something like this?

"Well... this is surprising." Jason muttered, watching the light emanate from the young man's hand. "I had no idea you we're capable of doing something like this. I knew something was different about you when I first saw you, but this..."

He trailed off, al most mesmerized by the light.

"So yeah, I've got these powers but I don't know too much about them. To tell you the truth though for some reason I've been greatly weakened since last night. Normally it's way more flashy."

Way more flashy? So this wasn't all he could do? Jason inhaled some of his cigarette before exhaling slowly, turning his head so he didn't hit Allan in the face with it. Last night was pretty weird; he couldn't even remember what building they visited. The woman that they met, all he remembered that she was a woman. Appearance, age, reason for being there, they all escaped him, which was a little frustrating.

"Listen Allan, if you have abilities like this, that means you could be half angel or demon. I don't really have any way of telling though."

Jason though about how he was supposed to go get Ayers Mackenzie. He couldn't afford to take too long.

"Alright, unless you have something else to show me, we should get going. Mackenzie could be in some kind of trouble if we take too long. Don't worry though, we'll figure out what your powers, and this whole Nephlim/Cambion thing is about."

"Listen Allan, if you have abilities like this, that means you could be half angel or demon. I don't really have any way of telling though."

He frowned. Ah jeeze. Last thing I want is to get dragged into some sort of holy war. As neat as that sounds I sure hope there's a different reason for this. He wanted to pry further into this whole issue but Jason had more to say.

"Alright, unless you have something else to show me, we should get going. Mackenzie could be in some kind of trouble if we take too long. Don't worry though, we'll figure out what your powers, and this whole Nephlim/Cambion thing is about."

He nodded. Even though he was concerned with what exactly being either half angel or demon entailed he was going to have to get this whole other side issue done with first. Without a moment lost he cut the power and proceeded towards Jason's car, thoughts of future problems dancing in his brain. "Right. Lets make this quick." He motioned to Jason as he got into the passengers seat. He was still far from fine but it seemed the longer he was awake the better he was feeling. It was less the lack of energy but what the cause might of been that worried him more.

Jason nodded and quickly got into the car. Starting the engine, he drove towards his destination. Along the way, thoughts of the magic abilities he saw were hard to push aside, but he managed to do it with some effort. He had to focus; who knows who could be after this guy? After a short time, he realized they were getting close. His eyes scanned around until he found the building.

"There it is." The area was nice and quiet, but in this situation, it was a bit unsettling.

He parked the car along the curb and shut the engine off. Leaning back, he pulled out his two pistols and made sure they were ready to go. Time to get this over with.

As he opened the car door, he remembered this was also a test for Allan. He had to see how he would take the lead when needed.

"Alright Allan. All you need to do is go and knock on his door, tell him were here to put him in protective custody, and lead him back to the car. I'll stand by and keep an eye out for anything suspicious."

It was time to see how the kid would do. Jason smirked at him and reassured "Don't worry, I got your back. Any questions?"

"Alright Allan. All you need to do is go and knock on his door, tell him were here to put him in protective custody, and lead him back to the car. I'll stand by and keep an eye out for anything suspicious."

He looked over at the house. It was just a rather plain suburban house, a little shoddy even. Someone evidently needed his roof tiles fixed since a couple were missing.

"Don't worry, I got your back. Any questions?"

"None yet. Hopefully he responds." Allan stepped from the car. Standing just down the walkway from the house he almost hoped that the guy wasn't home right now. He didn't want to have to talk much. Regardless of his feelings towards the matter he approached the door.

Knock knock!

He rapped on the door twice. "Hello? Mr Mackenzie this is the police. We're here for you." He called out to whoever might be inside. His question was met with a period of silence. He shifted from one foot to the next as he waited. The silence had gotten quite awkward. "Hello?" He called out through the door again shortly followed by another short round of knocking. Not really doing much with himself he looked over to see if he could see anything through the window on the front wall.

The curtains weren't closed so he could see a bit of what was inside what was apparently the man's living room. Everything seemed fairly standard for a middle class bachelor's house. The place seemed rather orderly for a single man's home though something was a bit off. There was a lamp that was knocked over and a few books were displaced across the floor. The wide plasma screen tv the man had was currently off. Maybe it wasn't on because the man had turned it off but the rather wide series of cracks running out from a central point in the screen told a different story.

At this point without making any assumptions Allan figured the guy probably wasn't going to answer his door right away. "Hey Jason, The guy isn't answering the door. Looks like something happened in there." He yelled to the car so that Jason could hear him from inside. This situation was now more complicated but at least he didn't have to talk to any strangers. Was it a blessing or a curse?

Jason leaned against the back of his car as Allan approached and knocked on the front door of Mackenzie's home. He folded his arms and let out a small yawn. He fought the urge to light a cigarette, as he kept his arms folded and unmoving.

"Heh, maybe Rachel is right; maybe I do smoke a little too much."

The detective had noticed that his cravings were slowly becoming more and more frequent, but that usually happened whenever he was working on a tense case. This whole Mackenzie thing, plus Allan having magic abilities was more than enough to send his adrenaline going. He had so many questions to ask him later, but for now he had to focus. Lives were on the line.

After waiting for a bit, he heard Allan call to him.

"Hey Jason, The guy isn't answering the door. Looks like something happened in there."

Jason let out a small sigh. Here comes the complications.

He walked over to Allan's side and drew one of his handguns, stun rounds at the ready, and and reached for the doorknob. He nodded towards Allan, then towards the door to signal that he was about to break in.

"Alright. Three, two, one...!"

Jason's plan was to turn the doorknob and ram his shoulder into the door to break in. What he didn't know is that the door wasn't locked, so the small amount of force he put on the handle when he grabbed it opened the door slightly. He couldn't stop his momentum as he collided with the door and stumbled inside. With a yelp of surprise, he fell face down onto the carpet with a dull thud.

His pride hurt more than his face as he made no attempt to recover.

"Why didn't you tell me the door wasn't locked?!" He asked Allan, his voice slightly muffled by the carpet.

Jason slowly picked himself up and grabbed his gun, rubbing the ache away in his nose.

"Let's just search the place..."

Allan looked over his shoulder to see Jason coming up, gun in hand, to go inside. He just sort of casually stood by while Jason got ready and kicked open the door only to land on his face.

"Why didn't you tell me the door wasn't locked?!"

"Didn't know it wasn't." He just shrugged his shoulders, stepping over Jason while entering the house. "Let's just search the place..."

Looking around it was a fairly ordinary middle class home for one occupant. The front door connected to a hallway which was open on the right leading into the living room. Further down the hall there was a set of doors, two on the left and one on the right. The hall ended at a kitchen where the backdoor was situated. Allan went to investigate the living room first since there were some details he wanted to get a better look at.

First thing he noticed was that a lamp was knocked over. It was a tall stand light with a spherical glass cover designed to illuminate bigger rooms such as this one. It was also undamaged for the most part revealing that it was more likely to have been shoved over rather than having been struck. Another detail which had caught his eye was the cracked television. Taking a closer look he saw the reason behind the damage: A bullet hole in the glass from which all the crack lines originated.

Evidently someone had taken a shot at Mackenzie here. What was confusing was that when he looked back at the window there was no damage to the glass there. Looking back to the television he suddenly had an idea. Without stating his reason aloud he went and leaned the flat screen forward to see the wall behind it. The bullet impact on the wall deviated slightly upwards from the hole in the television. This detail obviously meant that the shooter had to have been shooting from the direction of the window. Slightly less obvious was that it meant the shooter was shorter than Mackenzie as the shooter was aiming up as opposed to just straight on or downward.

Allan noticed a cell phone on the ground next to a coffee table. Since they were searching the place he figured he might find some details on there so he picked it up. Most of it was just standard fair for a rather boring character but then something really stood out when he looked over at a tab down in the corner of the screen. It had a little alert indicating that it had sixty six unread messages. "Yikes, this guy had a lot of unread text messages... All of which were sent in the span of a single minute... Fifteen minutes ago." He observed as he went to the text logs and scrolled down the list of sent texts.

He walked over to Jason and showed him the phone he was just looking at. "Take a look at this. All these messages are just winky faces." He held the phone up to him, pointing to one of the messages mentioned. He was one hundred percent right in his observation. Every single message was the same, just a single semicolon and right parentheses per message with nothing else to say. To make things weirder the phone number for each message was 626-666-666-6.

Whoever was behind these messages definitely had an odd sense of humor.

Jason walked into the kitchen and looked around. Nothing seemed to be out of order, although the place was kind of bland looking. They say you can tell someone's personality by looking at their home. By his guess, this guy was just your average joe.

He rooted around in several drawers and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. There had to be proof of his disappearance somewhere. He couldn't of just gone out for a walk and forgot to lock his door, could he? No chance; the guy practically barricaded his home and refused to leave. So where was he?

Right before he was about to ask Allan if he saw anything, he walked over and showed him a phone with lots of text messages, all with a winking smiley faces. The number ominously enough had too many sixes for a superstitious or religious person to be comfortable about.

He rubbed his chin while pondering what to do. He could report the number to the precinct and have them trace the number to it's source... but he had another idea.

What if this was supernaturally related? He could just be overthinking it, but if it was, the police probably wouldn't be ready for it yet. He had to see what this was about himself first.

"Alright... let's see who this number belongs to." He announced, pulling his own phone out.

He dialed the number and was sure to put in *67 in front of the number to ensure that their caller ID came up as an unknown number; no need for them to counter trace his number and put them in trouble.

He hit the talk button and put it on speaker so Allan can hear. Time to see who this was.

"Alright... let's see who this number belongs to." Jason had pulled his phone out, dialing the number that was left and calling over speakerphone.

Jason's calling tone rang a few times and then silence. The screen went dark as the phone turned itself off before the call could be connected. Moments later the phone restarted, turning back on as it would normally. As this went on he was just leaning up against a wall with his hands in his pockets. This wasn't exactly his strong suite. Heck, investigating in general wasn't really his calling. His discretion with details was almost as poor as his ability to make friends and he wouldn't find it very easy to commit his mind to focusing on solving the crime. He always had trouble focusing on things that didn't really catch his interest and criminals hardly fit in his catalog of interests.

Since the phone attempt failed he decided it was time they probably pursued another lead to follow in this recent development. "Well, that failed. What now?" He asked Jason since he was the guy heading this whole operation he was now a part of somehow. He never really saw himself being able to get hired on as a cop before that day and he's still a little skeptical of whether they'd really hire him after this. Still, he was here so he might as well make the most of the situation he was given, whatever that might be.
