He ran down the stairs, then slid down the banister. He was late, again, but it was pretty much the norm for him. But he guessed he should try and be on time today since it was a Choosing. He was kind of bumbbed out that he had to wait three months for it but it was better than those who turned seventeen just after the Choosing and had to wait almost an entire year before getting to go and choose their own spark.

He had his headphones in the whole ride, not paying attention if anything was said to him; he didn’t like listening to adults anyway. When he got there he saw the last of the vampires going into the building and he rushed inside, late. He pulled out his headphones, letting them hang out the front of his shirt and glanced around, running a hand through his white hair. People were already choosing their sparks. He glanced at them, not knowing too well who he should pick, his parents at told him often enough that the pink, yellow and blues ones were the ones to get. He didn’t know if he was going to listen to them or not, but he knew he didn’t feel like getting someone who was going to be fighting him all the time.

He frowned a little, glancing around at some of the other Vampires in the room. They were already picking out the ones they wanted, being taken away. It didn’t look like any of them cared about who they picked, the found the nicest looking one, probably the one that smelled the best. Why would they do that? Didn’t they want to know the person? Surely the Sparks had feelings; they were people, like he was. He saw a girl who looked disappointed, maybe even sad as she saw others walking out. Then he noticed her bracelet, bright pink, maybe she expected to be chosen already. He made is way over to her, brushing some of the strands of white hair out of his blue eyes. ”Why the sad look? Not everything you expected it to be?” He let out a small smile some might have taken to be dark looking, letting one of his fangs show. Would she be scared? Or did she not care that they were lined like cattle for the Vampire’s choosing?

Emily heard a voice nearby, a guy's. She turned to look at the speaker, who was facing her. A vampire was talking to her! What had he said? Oh yeah! Something about being dissappointed. "Well, I was always told I would be gone seconds after it began. They always go for yellow and pink. But when I saw the ones being picked, they weren't fitting what I was told. I mean, I have seen atleast two Sparks with red braclelets go, and even a girl with black. I was starting to wonder if I would ever even be noticed." She realized she had probably just talked his ear off, losing her first and possibly last chance out of here. She got quiet and smiled faintly. She didn't really know what would happen now. "I'm Emily. Sorry if I am doing this wrong. First time and no one cared to tell me what would happen."

”Things aren’t always what they are supposed to be. And rarely do things always happen they way they are supposed to.” He glanced down at her bracelet as she spoke. It was pink, the ones he was told to go for, he was told they always gave their blood more willingly, always had good attitudes, as was seen by her continual speaking. ”That’s alright Emily; it’s always a Vampire’s first time.” He looked down at her dress, seeing that it was a lot fancier than what he had put on. His button up white shirt and black pants seemed a bit under dressed than what she chose. He stepped closer to her. ”Tell me, do they tell you what you’re here for? Why they have you all dressed up for us?”

"The teachers said that if we were lucky, a vampire would chose us and we would go home with them. But I overheard a few girls that had been here before say that we were just snacks. I'm not really sure about anything, but I don't like this place and I want out, even if it means giving blood to you." She had thought both ways about this. The teachers made it seem like adoption for pets. She was great with cooking and cleaning if that was what the result would be. The other girls acted like we were walking sandwiches, which didn't scare her as much as the other new girls and pink bracelets. She really just wanted someone to whisk her away from here. Anywhere was better.

He smiled, ”Would you be surprised if I told you the others are correct? That they have you here just so we have someone to drink from everyday?” He tilted his head. ”Most just see you as pets you know? Something to take home, take care of, don’t need to get to know you or anything.” He was watching her, seeing what her reaction to it was, if she would be okay going somewhere where they all thought of her as a pet he brought back with him. Even though that was not what he wanted, with house being so huge, the grounds large enough to get lost for days, he wanted company, someone to talk to. ”Still think that’s better than being here?”

"I would rather be a snack that cooks and cleans than stay here." She left her answer simple. The vampire gave her weird looks when she talked alot. Maybe he just wanted a quiet pet. She neede to be a goldfish instead of a parrot. "But you don't look like you just want a snack. You're lonely. I can tell. I'm good at reading other people. Your eyes are screaming for a companion, even if it's a Spark." She lossened her stance, putting down her tense shield for a relaxed one. She leaned back against the cool brick wal, propping herself with one of her feet against it.

He tilted his head as she leaned back against the wall, lifting one of her legs to do so. He smiled a little, putting his hands in his pockets. ”You have some good instincts. Could you blame me? I said before things aren’t always what they seem. And you wouldn’t be cooking or cleaning, the Sparks we have are well taken care of.” He started tapping his fingers, wondering slightly what she was thinking about him, a vampire seeking a companion in a spark.

"Well I would really like to get out of here. All the girls in my hall hate me. I'm the only pink bracelet on the hall, so they torment me. Apparently I think I'm better than them because I have a pink bracelet. I can't help that I'm naturally nice and caring." She looked at the young man. He was actually very good looking. He seemed sincere. "If you take me home, I can garuntee you will always have someone to talk to, wether it's politics, history, science, whatever you want."

He watched her curiously; she really did seem to want out, telling him she would do anything for him to do so. He pulled his hands from his pockets, one reaching up and brushing her hair behind her ear. ”I’ll take you from here, you won’t have to deal with the torments anymore.” His hand rested at the base of her neck as he leaned closer to her and angled his head down so his fangs brushed her neck.

He bit down, his mouth filling with her blood and his eyes closed. The sweet liquid filled him, it was all he wanted, it was so much better than the blood he had every day from the fridge. His eyes opened as he realized he was still drinking from her and he pulled his fangs from her neck, his other hand had found his way to her back to pull her closer and his other was still at the back of her neck. The small pinprick were already healing and he smiled, looking down at her.

Emily gasped at the bite. It stung, but only a dull sting. Then she became relaxed. It was an entirely new feeling. Then he pulled away, a look of slight worry on his face. Maybe he thought he hurt me? "Why did you stop? You looked like you enjoyed it." Vampires were so wierd. She was gonna have to get used to this.

He chuckled, ”Of course I liked it. I don’t want to take too much from you.” He stroked her hair back again, letting his hand brush her cheek. ”Anything you need to go get? Special items you don’t want to leave behind?” He was wondering already what her hobbies were, what she would want to do, how he could keep her entertained.

"Its just one bag. Everyone told me to pack just in case. Do I go get it and meet you somewhere, or do we both go? I know guy Sparks aren't allowed in our rooms but I don't know the rule for vampires." She giggled, soft and sweet. Then looked him in the eyes and smiled. She felt safer and happier already.

He shrugged a little, keeping on hand around her waist. ”I don’t know, don’t think they should mind, just going to get your things right?” By the sounds of it, it was like they lived in a school building, tons of rules, all expected to strive to be the perfect pet for the Vampires. He didn’t like that morale too much, it was like keeping cattle that just happened to know how to talk.

"Ok. I'll show you where it is. I mean it's not like I can get in trouble if I'm not staying." She walked back to her room, concious of his hand on her back. She kinda liked it, but it also kinda wished he would do something alittle less...pushy. When they got to her room, she opened the door and walked over to her bed. "Here it is." She grabbed a black and purple backpack on the bed and slung it over her shoulder.

He dropped his hand from her back as they got to her room and she grabbed her things. It was hitting him a little now, this girl was actually going to go home with him, she was all his. He mentally shook his head, she wasn’t an object, and he wouldn’t ever let himself think that, she was a person. He put his hands in his pockets, fingers tapping against his leg. ”Think you’ll miss this place?” It was where she had lived for many years, he wasn’t too sure how he would feel if he suddenly just up and left one day from his home. He motioned in a “Ladies First” gesture as he led her out of the room.

Emily was dying to get out of here. She laughed when he asked if she would miss it. "Would you miss prison?" This was the nicest anyone had treated her since the day she was born, and the guy had bit her and sucked her blood! That had to say something! Once out the door, she followed his to wherever it was she had to go next.

He smiled when she laughed, ”No, I guess I wouldn’t.” He wondered briefly why it was so bad here for them. He watched her as he walked. ”You’ll like where we’re going. The house is huge, and the grounds around it are nice, well kept.” He was wondering what she was going to like more, the nature, the house, or the electronics, maybe all of them? Either way he was going to make sure that she liked it.
