Vanessa always considered herself a strong person. She even thought she could keep a calm head in most stessful situations. Apparently she hadn't been in enough stressful situations like now. She's doubting all the things she thought she knew about herself. She's having to relearn everything she used to know about herself. She used to be strong and calm minded. After the club event, she's found that she cries more easily. She hates herself for leaving her boyfriend behind. If he was gone, she didn't know if she wanted to live without him. She's trying to keep it together for her friends but doesn't know how long she can keep up the act. Her parents were very different from each other so she learned important life and survival lessons from each of them. She is very intellegent and was even on a full scholarship at school for her grades and her gymnastics. She's finding that in this new world her smarts did not equipt her for these situations but her time with her father did.

It was a running joke in the Borne family that since most of the family served in the armed forces that they were the most American in their neighborhood. While Jacob Borne loved to joke about this, his wife Samantha didn't really care for that joke. But when she was pregnant with her first daughter, she did not expect to go into labor early on July 3rd. Vanessa Elizabeth Borne arrived early the next morning on the fourth which seemed to solidify the Borne family claims. Vanessa wasn't the first child born to the couple. They already had a set of twin boys, Tyler and Clay. They were three years older than their baby sister and never let her forget it.
Jacob wasn't really equipt for a daughter, so he did what he did with his boys. He played rough house with her and taught her the things his own father taught her. He was raised in the country so he often drove his children out to his parents house and take them camping and hunting. While Vanessa found this fun yet hard, her mother was not fond of her husband's influence on their daughter. So she enrolled her in dance and gymnastics.
Vanessa flourished in gymnastics and even went on to compete in tournaments. Samantha was estactic to see her daughter succeed in the feminine and hard sport. Samantha was a teacher so stressed to Vanessa the value of knowledge. But spending so much time with her mother created a rift in her and her father's relationship. Her parents often fought over the children and her mother often influenced her daughter's views of her father. The pressure was too much and just before her tenth birthday her parents divorced.
Her brothers moved with their father to her grandparents' country home and she stayed with her mother. By this time, the blonde took gymnastics very seriously. She loved her father and her brothers- though she didn't have much in common with them except her competitive spirit. She would be taken away from her friend and her training to spend time with her father and brothers. Instead of trying to find something they could all enjoy together, Vanessa was forced to go camping in the middle of nowhere and hunt. She would have to clean animal meat and fish. She hated doing this. And she wasn't even that good at hunting or fishing! But still she endured. Spending time with her brothers and father became something she dreaded. Who wanted to live without a toilet and a hot shower? She didn't that was for sure.
Vanessa didn't know when she gained her group of friends. As far back as she could remember, they were there and they were all attached at the hip. During middle school, she grew even closer to one particular member of the group. Dylan. She didn't know how it happened. But one day they were a couple. This only made Nessa happier. Even through her troubles, she usually stayed upbeat and positive.
Due to her achievements within her sport and her high GPA in high school, Vanessa was offered a full scholarship. To her surprise, it was to the school her friends- and boyfriend- went to. That made hanging out with them and studying so much easier. They were all basically on the same schedule. She likes to push her friends to do their best on tests so she often makes study guides and setting up study sessions for everyone. She was too consumed in her studies and tests to notice the weird stories on the news.

Do heels count as weapons? If not she does not have any during the beginning of tale. Actually, there is that knife, Dylan gave her in her purse as a joke. "Rule # 4 Always carry a knife." Her purse is in the car. Due to her father's love of hunting, she does have knowledge of how to use knives, bows, crossbows, and guns. It may take her some time to regain her muscle memories on how to use these weapons as accurately as she once had. She also has survival skills that her father and brothers taught her.

Vanessa leave the club with her purse that has various pens, her wallet with credit cards and cash. She has tweezers inside of her purse. On her keys, she has pepper spray and an army knife- which, of course, has multiple little gadgets on it. He has a lighter that Dylan gave her that one time, she can't really recall when. There's some emergency makeup and lotion. Even a couple of bobby pins. There are a pair of flats in the purse for emergencies.
