A Tale of Transmutation

Introduction

Image
Several years have passed since the time of the Elric brothers, the famous sibling alchemists who saved the country of Amestris countless times. Their tales have been written down in history books, their heroic deeds turned into legends, and the Homonculi they once fought have become nothing more than the things of nightmares for young children. Yes, over the years peace has fallen on the land, save for the endless conflicts with the neighboring nations, but that is to be expected. And what has happened to the brothers?

During their last adventure they passed through the Gate and emerged on the otherside, in a new world that was quite the opposite of their own. Alchemy as they knew it did not exist their, but they where whole, and together, and that was all that mattered. Their fates after crossing, however, are unknown. In our own world, however, Roy Mustang has taken up the position of Fuhrer, and though his experiences with the Elric brothers he has been slowly using the military to bring peace to the land, rather than conflict, as was often the case before. Winrey is now funded by the military, however is still completely independent of their workings, except that now if a solider ever looses a limb they get an automail replacement for free. Other than that she ownes the country's best automail shop.

But, over the last few years, strange reports have reached Mustang's desk. Reports of odd lights, mysterious deaths and dissapearances, and other such things. At first he thought nothing of it, but as more and more reports came in, some of them showing signs that alchemy may have been involved, he begins sending out special investigation units. These are usually cells of three to five people, most or all of them being State Alchemists, who go out on location, make a formal, first hand report, and do whatever they can to prevent further acts from occuring. Afterwards they return to Central Command, though so far little has been turned up. It seems that if an alchemist, or a group of them, are responsable for these events, they are very good and covering their tracks.

All of this changes one day with the dissaperance of one of the highly ranked State Alchemist, known as the Forecast Alchemist, who had the abilities to change the weather in the area for a time. The man had just returned from an inventigation of a small farming village in the West Area and was making out another, follow up report, more thorogh than his first, as he was not so pressed. This partialy finished report was found on his desk, but there was something odd about it. It seems that alchemy was used to erase parts of the report, and more importantly on an area near the bottom, where he may have tried to write something just before whatever it was happened to him. All that could be understood from the information on the paper was that alchemic symbols were found etched into the rafters of a barn, seemingly randomly. It is suspected that prehaps he was onto something and those behind the mysterious events had to silence him.

While Mustang believes the man is dead, he is still gathering a new group of State Alchemists together to investigate the West Area more thoroghly. Incidentally, it is also time for the annual State Alchemist Entrance Exams.

-=-=-=-

So, several years have passed by rather peacefully since Ed and Al crossed over into the parallel world. Roy Mustang as taken control of the military, and up until recently things have begun to calm down quite a lot without the Homunculi around. But now a new evil has emerged in the land of Amestris, but anyone who might know why has begun to dissapear, as have the clues. Now the new Fuhrer, Mustang, is gathering alchemists to investigate, while also having to deal with the entrance exams and new alchemists wishing to join the military.

You can choose from a few different roles-
State Alchemist: an alchemist who has been with the military for some time
New Alchemist: an alchemist taking part in the exams to become a State Alchemist
Regular Alchemist: just an ordinary person who can use alchemy, but is somehow involved in the events
Soldier: a normal, none alchemy using person who works in the military
Homunculi: a souless being created through human transmutation

"I'm sorry, Miss Darna, I really am. It's just that I've had to live with this, everyday, all alone. After the incident with my father I had no family left, and so had to live with strangers until I was well enough to leave. Since then, up until today, I've had no one but myself to speak to about such things, and so I think on those events fairly often..." Issac has a sad tone to his voice, but he wasn't all that sad in general, just sad that he seemed have struck something in this woman that hurt her deeply. "Here. I don't know what happened to your cane, but you can have mine. I don't really need it..."

Standing once more he walks over to her slowly, preforming a quickly, simple transmutation so that his cane grows longer and lighter, into something like what she had gotten used to, and he holds it out, placing the tip on the ground so that it makes a tap sound. He would have placed it in her hands, but he has come to realize that she doesn't seem to like to be touched, in anyway, by another person.

"Kain will not be your partner," Mustang says, "You two will be part of a group. Tomorrow morning I'll call all of the members together and explain everything to all of you, but until then I think you should all get some rest. Darna, you know where your quarters are. Kain, a roomhas been prepared for you, I'm sure you can find your way around." And with that he turns and heads out the door. As a precaution, the man who was stabbed by the chimera was placed in the intensive care unit, and he should now be able to tell the Fuhrer what exactly happened in that storeage room.

It hit suddenly how horrible she was. But Darna wasn't one to really speak aloud about her wrong-doings, and she didn't do much to show physically that she was sorry. When she heard the tapping sound after Isaac Kain offered his cane to her, she gripped it in her small hands. It was the right weight and seemed the correct length, even with her sitting down, but something felt wrong about it. She twisted it around in her fingers as the Fuhrer spoke, Darna's brow in a quizzical turn.

Her body did, however, relax a little when Mustang spoke of not being "partnered" with him. It's not that it would have been a bad thing, but Darna was uncomfortable with working with someone closely like that. If they were part of a group she could hang back and watch, readying herself for when she was needed. This is what she did with everything. Shame on her for being so easily distracted. Isaac had more power than he thought. Sighing, Darna nodded to the Fuhrer and stood up, holding the cane awkwardly in her right hand. He walked out, leaving them alone again, save for the other alchemist lying in his bed.

She wasn't sure what to say. He wasn't a stupid kid, he knew exactly what she felt, or almost at least. They'd done the same thing, possibly for the same reason. They just wanted to bring someone back.

"I just have one question, Isaac Kain." Moving slowly, carefully toward him, her hand gripped the cane tightly. There was definitely something strange about this cane. "Who did you transmutate?" She whispered, knowing he was close enough to hear her.

She'd never told anyone what she'd done, but most everyone knew. Mustang knew more of the story than anyone outside the village, and that made Darna always a little uncomfortable around him. She knew Isaac's would be more honorable than her own. His had been someone close to him, someone he'd loved. Darna had been egotistical and stupid and performed the greatest taboo on a child she barely knew. It made her heart wrench every time she remembered the monster it had become. What had they done with it? Was it gone? Or had it turned into...

Darna tried to focus on Isaac and his answer before she completely lost it and left to the nearest bar.

For a few moments, Issac says nothing, not really wanting to remember, but after a time he can't help it. Closing his eyes he reaches up and rubs them, sighing as he does so. Eventually, he speaks.

"My father..." He says, simply and quietly. "He was killed. He was treating one of you, a State Alchemist, when a man he'd been treating as a patient for years rushed in, gun in hand. My father shielded the alchemist, and in doing so lost his life." He stops and reaching up once more, having lowered his hand, and wipes a tear away. Once again he silently curses himself for his mistake. Not only is he uncertain if his father has, as the tales say, become a homunculus, but he is reminded once more that his limbs aren't real. Although he can somewhat feel through them, his hands are fake, just metal and wires, and it is his own fault.
-=-=-=-

Once a nurse looks Issac over they release him officially, and he is shown to a simple room. There is a bed, a dresser, and a desk with a chair, and little else. Inside the dresser he finds some uniforms, and, trying one on, he finds they seem to be tailor made to fit his frame, which doesn't suprise him as much as he feels it should. Once his things are put away he heads for the showers, washes throughly to get all the blood off his body, as well as any dead skin from his medical alchemy, then he heads back to his room, dresses for bed, and reads through a manual that was left on the desk for him.

The next morning, at dawn, he wakes up. Right away he remembers that Mustang said something about a meeting, but just as he gets out of bed abd takes his pajamas shirt off to start getting dressed, there is a loud knock at the door, then a yell before it swings open suddenly. Wilhelm is there, seeming more cheery than the otherday. He is, as always dressed in his uniform, but now he has two blue backpacks, one on his own back, the other in hand.

"So, you're actually awake, good, I won't have to kick you in the head." Wilhelm says with a laugh, tossing the extra pack on Issac's bed. "Hurry up and dress, the Fuhrer is waiting on us."

"What's in this thing?" Issac asks, lifting the pack, suprised by it's heft.

"A little of everything. Supplies, materials, some money, extra uniform, so on and so forth." Wilhelm says. "These are the standard supplies we carry when out in the field. You're welcome to carry more or less, but if you end up with too much weight or running out too quickly it's not my fault." Then, seeming suddenly angry once more, he yells, "Hurry up!"

Issac jumps a little at this. After Wilhelm leaves he dresses in a uniform, looks through the backpack, then sighs and takes some of the things out, putting them in his satchet bag and taking it with him as he leaves instead of the blue pack. Soon he is headed outside, where the others are waiting with Mustang.

Dax jumped up. " Ohhhh crap, what time is it?" He said while he looked at the clock. " Well i have time." He said while he began to relax as he sat down on the bed he was given in the hospitle. " Most of them should be down there already. " He thought as he stood up and began to put on his shirt. As he began to to put on his jeans the nurse came in.

" Escuse me sir, General Mustang would like to see you outside." She said as she gave him a polite grin.

" Thank you madam. May i obtain my weapons now?" He said while he fastened the belt around his pants.

" Certainly sir, They will be given to you when you show them these realease forms." She said as she handed him some papers.

"Thank you once more." He said. He then moved his curly hair out of his face so he could see clearer. He then to make his bed and walked out the door. He headed down the stairs to the reception desk " Hear you go." He said while he shoved his hands into his pockets waiting to receive his items. The man Behind the counter handed him a pair of glasses, a pack of gum, a wallet, and his two axes. He strapped his axes to his back as he headed out the door to go see his companion and to see why he wanted him there. He saw Mustang in the distance and began to wave. " Hey man, heven't seen you in a while." He Said while he kind of sprinted to the General. " So whats up?" Dax said while he scratched his head.

Pushing the sunglasses up further on the bridge of her nose, Darna tilted her head up to let the warmth of the sunlight bathe her face. She hadn't slept all night, but that didn't show on her physically. Her brain certainly felt it, and her lungs were burning from all the cigars she'd smoked, but she was here, sitting on a bench, waiting for the others to join them. Fuhrer Mustang had been seated beside her, quiet. They did that a lot, sat in silence. She didn't understand why he kept quiet but she was silent because of how much he intimidated her. He was amazing and powerful and intelligent.

No one had a damn thing on him.

The Ash Alchemist, Dax something-or-other, joined them and Darna felt a rush of relief.

Oh good, someone else for him to pay attention to. Messing with the ear pieces on her glasses, Darna continued to let the sun fall on her skin. A smile slid over her lips at Dax's question.

"The sky, I believe, is up." The Colonel knew it was lame, but in her state of mind she needed anything to make her giggle a little. It was the first time since her exam that she'd worn civilian clothing before the Fuhrer. Today she wore jeans and one of her favorite, plain, white button-down shirts. Darna looked normal. Not blind, save for the cane Isaac had transmuted for her. The one she knew could have only belonged to his father. She had planned on buying her own and returning this one to him, but of course, Mustang had to mess that up. So here she was, using the cane that didn't belong to her, and looking perfectly normal and full of sight.

Darna kept on smiling, hoping it would cover up the sadness from knowing what she and Isaac had done.

When Issac showed up to the meeting in his uniform, he felt very out of place. Everyone, save for Mustang, was in normal clothing, so right off the bad he felt stupid. He smiled a little, however, when he heard Miss Darna make her joke. It was a little corny, but it made him laugh a little. "And here I thought the sky was below us all this time," He says as he walks over to the group and gives a small salute to Mustang. "I'm not too late am I? I got kind of lost on my way out here, and no one wanted to give me directions."

"You're fine Kain...though I'll have to ask you to change into some civilian clothes before you reach the train station..." Mustang says, running a hand through his hair. "This is an undercover investigation into the death and dissapearance of some of out alchemists. You will all be taking a train to the East, where most of the events have taken place, I've arranged for your tickets and an inn where you'll be staying your first night, but after that you're on your own, and you'll have an allowence on how much you can spend while in the field. Of course, being alchemists, I don't expect that will be much...right?"

Issac swallows and nods a little. The Fuhrer sounds a bit angry, so he doesn't say anything. In the back of his mind he is both cursing himself for not dressing properly, and thinking some higher power that he remembered to bring normal clothes along, even though he didn't think he would need them.

"You will be meeting up with a man named Frederick Talon. He is a former State Alchemist, and now lives as a simple farmer between here and East City. You won't actually be going to East City, not unless you have to... We have had three alchemists die in this area already, and two have dissapeared. Your job is to find any leads possible and report back to me. Darna, you're in charge from here. If they don't listen, so as you pelase with them...if you'll excuse me, I need to attend to a few things...here."

Before Mustang leaves he hands everyone a train ticket.

She was in charge? Well that was something new. Taking the ticket Mustang gave, she felt it over. No braille. It figured, really. Taven had gone through all that work to teach her to read blindly, and no one practiced it in Central. Standing up, the Colonel held out the cane and turning away from the group, Darna Shaelladh had one single thought on her mind.

What in the hell was she supposed to do with a bunch of kids?

They had their orders. State Alchemists were being killed and they had to find out, starting with this Talon fellow. But how in the hell was she going to keep all these kids together? Turning back around, an idea struck her wildly and she grinned from ear to ear.

"Alright, small fries!" She yelled. If she had eyes, the others would have noticed a sparkle in them. Darna remembered, before her taboo, she had once had blue eyes. Like the sky, her father had said. Endless and full of promise. For a moment, her grin faltered, but she shrugged her shoulders, fixed her sunglasses and tapped the cane on the concrete.

"Kain, go change. When you get back, we're going to visit a friend of mine." Twisting the cane in her palm she grimaced. "I can't keep this. It's not mine and it's not right. So we'll proceed to get one for me, and then our investigation will start." And a good, hot, homemade meal was in order for everyone. Darna figured the road ahead was going to be odd and possibly treacherous. One last hot meal would be good for their souls.

Issac couldn't help but blush a little at this, but rather than argue or try to appologuise again he simple nodded, then added, "Yes me'am, be right back." Then, with a small bow to the others, he hurried back inside the main building. This time it took him only a few moments to navigate his way through the halls and people, his memory was good, it just took a few times to remember directions. The shame was that now that he had begun to become familiar with his surroundings, he was going to be leaving them as well.

Oh well, suppose I'll have to get used to this. Not like I can get my hands back sitting behind a desk in this place all day... Issac thinks as he enteres his room. Quickly he tosses his bag on the bed and goes through it, picking out a simple outfit, something that wouldn't look odd wo wear gloves with. In the end he chose his boots, a pait of bluejeans, a white long sleeve shirt, and a large, dark blue long coat he found in the closet. It seemed a few sizes too big, and like it might have the dual purpose of being a kind of cloak, but he liked it, and once ready he hurried back to the others.

"Alright Miss Darna, ready." Issac says, saluting loosely when he is back in line with the others. His breathing is a little heavy from his hurrying about, but not too bad. Thankfully his mistake years ago had not affected any of his internal organs. He had read that the woman who taught the Elric brothers had lost several internal organs when she brought her child back from the other side. It hadn't occured to him until now that he would be getting his cane back. He had missed it, since it had belonged to his father, but because he didn't really need it he hadn't thought much of it since Darna could actually have some use of it. "I think we're all ready to go now, following your lead."

The Colonel snickered. Lead? That was a funny way of putting it, she supposed. Perhaps she was in charge, and she could tell them where to go, but as far as physically leading the troupe of State Alchemists... well, that wouldn't get them very far at all. Darna's senses were keen and she could see alchemy as it was being performed, and in some cases, if the flow of alchemy was strong in someone, she could sense their presence. Otherwise, Darna was blind. She could see nothing and the crowds of people in Central were many. They were loud, smelly, never in the same place and so she was completely helpless. It made her a little angry to think she was weak, but only a strong person could admit to their weaknesses.

Sighing, with a snicker still on her lips, Darna tapped the end of the cane on the concrete toward the group of men. How daring the Fuhrer was to put her with a bunch of testosterone. A small swell of pride filled her up. Either this was coincidence or Mustang thought she could handle herself well in a group full of cocky boys. To Darna, no matter the age, they would all be boys. It must have been Taven's fault that she acted much older than her mere twenty-seven. Anyone younger than she were girls and boys. It helped in the case of the military, but when it came to making friends most just saw it as condescending. Shrugging off the thought, Darna reached out to the first warm body she could feel.

"Whoever you are, I will hold onto your shoulder and you will take us all to the train station." She spoke strongly to him, but held her head down, her bangs covering the sunglasses and lifeless eyes. Her small hand took hold of the shoulder and kept a tight grip. Tucking the cane close to her side, she nodded her head a little.

"We will get on the train to the East, but midway, we will stop. Taven lives in a little city on the way to East City." Her heart fluttered in excitement. It had been much too long since her last visit to Taven. Darna had to admit, she missed the old codger.

"So come on!" She paused, almost comically. "Who am I holding onto, anyway?"
