Starling

Paige stepped out of the bakery with a wide smile across her face. She had gotten a great deal on the bread as it was the end of the day and the baker had even thrown in a set of honey cakes a no extra charge. It really was amazing what a cheery smile could do.

"Stone will be pleased I didn't have to use too much of his precious coin," she said to herself, struggling to hold on to all her parcels.

That was the problem with sending her to buy supplies, she was better at getting bargins but her lack of height often made it difficult to carry everything she needed.

"He really should have come with me to help but no, he wanted to get drunk," she muttered to herself, "He's probably looking for trouble."

But it turned out that he wasn't. As Paige neared the tavern, Stone was already leaving. Hurrying up to the man she gave him her warmest smile.

"Have a good time?" she asked, "I managed to get some free honey cakes, they'll be great with some cream."

Stone was a man of few words but that never stopped Paige from trying to strike up a conversation with him. She figured he could use the cheer in his life, the line of work that they both followed was a dark one, darker than most would ever expect but Paige was one to look for the bright side.

"By the way, did you get any information while you were in there?" Paige asked, shifting the supplies around uncomfortably, they were getting heavy.

She had been too busy rushing around the town to ask questions, with luck Stone might have picked up on the gossip and rumours of the town.

Stone

Hardly out of the smell of that piss-hole tavern, and already that voice. "Have a good time?"

Why the gods felt the need to twist his fate and hers together was beyond him- it wasn't that he disliked her, just her cheerfulness. It came like waves. For a moment he tried to ignore her, it was a wasted effort..she would just keep a running monologue regardless. He caught snippets of her babble, something about bread, and sweets. A cocked head allowed him to look down on his short companion. "You know the bread here is made from fungus..right?"

His steps carried him off, heading towards the small market place of the town- he intended to stop by the blacksmith, gather a few things and then drop in on the alchemist. An old dwarf had lost a special crafting scroll in a bet, Stone meant to test it out some. That was when he heard a new voice. "Well, isn't this a coincidence? I was looking for you two!" Turning slowly he blinks- who the hell...

Narrowing his yellow eyes and venting a sigh he looks the new comer over. "Job's taken. Move along." nodding at Starling he adds a bit "My associate here will answer any further questions.." and then he bailed. Quick steps allow him to slip into the crowd and vanish.

-----------------------------------------------

Moments later, and on the far side of the market, Stone helps the smith work the bellows, the larger man hammering hot steel while talking. "Yeah, I heard the rumors, something about a village attacked. Bout a days ride west of here." the pounding stops, his massive hands moving to snag a pair of calipers and quench the metal in a pail of water. "...it true what they say? All them whispers 'bout no one surviving?"

Stone shrugs and slows the bellows pump, "Might be, might not. Have more info when I get an eye-full I wager." he bent, picking up some bits of metal. "Now, about payment?"

"Sure, take the scraps. What you'll do with them is beyond me." the smith shrugs, looking at the Witcher oddly- Stone had offered to help man the forge in return for scraps of metal; silver, iron and steel mostly. The work was hard alone, so the smith had agreed...saving coin was always a good thing, the locals asked for too much in payment for helping.

With his payment gathered and tucked away, Stone nods a farewell to the man and heads off, aiming to reach the alchemist before dark.

Starling

Paige stared as Stone walked off, her mouth open in outrage. Why did he always leave all the work to her. Angrilly she lobbed a honey cake after him.

"Fungus indeed," she muttered before turning to face the newcomer.

It was an elf with silver hair. Elves were nice enough but they always made Paige feel short...well, shorter than usual anyway. This one was just as glamourous as every other elf she'd come across but there was something different in her eyes, she was clearly a witcher.

"I'm sorry about him, he can be quite impossible sometimes, would you like a honey cake?" said Paige, offering the package of sweets to the elf woman, "I'm Paige, otherwise known as Starling, what's your name?"

Absentmindedly she began to pick at one of the cakes, breaking it into smaller and smaller pieces before eating them one at a time.

"To tell you the truth, I don't know too much about the situation, there have been villiages where the entire population is disappering, Stone and I were sent to investigate," she said, "The odd thing is that there are signs of a massive struggle that suggest the villiagers have been killed but there are no bodies to be found. I wonder what kind of monster would want bodies and why?"

The whole thing creeped her out but she knew that there was a reason she had been ask to join in on the investigation. She noticed things that others didn't and the fact that she was often mistaken for a human child meant that she overhaerd things too. Perhaps she'd get lucky and discover a major clue, then Stone would have to smile.

Khiari took a look at the halfling and presented a small pouch of coins. "Here's for the honey cake and being cooperative. Now let's go find that Stone of yours."

Once she took a step, she stumbled and clasped her hand to her forehead. "I-I'm Sorry, I'll catch up with you when I can. Have some... business to take care of." She then ran off with her hand still on her forehead.

Once she was in a secluded alley, she sat down and leaned against one of the alley's walls. With a few deep breaths, a small glowing disc appears and a tall hooded figure steps out of it and onto the ground next to her. "Please... Make the pain go away, I'm begging you." She whimpers to the figure, which is likely a man. A low calm voice resonates in her ears like thunder, almost bursting her eardrums."I have told you before, and I will tell you again. We cannot dispel the curse until you are able to kill the one that laid the curse upon you originally." "The pain.. It's too much.." She says softly before consciousness slips from her.

Starling

Paige had taken up a seat outside the tavern, it certainly wasn't the most comfortable of chairs but it was better than having to stand and hold on to all the food at the same time.

"How long is he going to take?" she sighed, "That woman ran off before I could thank her for the coins. Oh well, if honey cakes can't sweeten Stone's mood then perhaps money will."

She had just taken a bite out of a cake when the mysterous woman returned, suggesting that they go and find Stone. having just sat down she was reluctant to get up again and lose the chance to rest. Stone seemed like he had other things to focus on anyway.

"Oh don't worry about him," she said to the elf, "He'll come back here eventually and I don't really think he's in the mood for company at the moment. By the way, you never told me your name."

She leaned back further in her chair and started on another honey cake, looking exactly like a little girl having a tea party, the only difference was that no normal girl would carry the amount of weaponry that Paige had with her.

"What sort of skills do you have?" asked Paige, suddenly overwhelmed with curiousity, "I'm pretty good with ranged combat."

She was always interested to see a person's capabilities in combat, as of yet she hadn't seen Stone in action but if the way he took his job was anything to go by then she had no doubt that his skills would be a sight to behold.

In the distance her keen eyes picked out a man wearing a bandanna, heading in their direction. There was something in the way he walked that suggested he was more than just human, Paige didn't even notice his pointed ears, she was too busy checking him out.

"Oh my," she said quietly, pointing the man out to the elf woman, "Can he be my husband? I'm sure he'll fall for me once he sees me because I said so. He's ever so pretty."

She was joking of course but still, she did hope that the man would come talk to them at least.

Gavin

He managed his way through the crowd stopping every so often for directions to the town tavern. This business wasn't going nearly as smoothly as he had hoped and he was eager to ready himself and move the mission ahead. He scanned the area looking for the familiar words which were recognized everywhere and brightened when he saw the sign for the Tavern. "Finally," he sighed, directing his attention towards the building. He kept his eyes open for anyone holding even the slightest description the Witcher gave: Short one with the bread pile. Gavin frowned. "Couldn't be any more descriptive, could you Witcher?" he grumbled to himself, irritation taking root. It was a fleeting emotion, however, as two females caught his eyes at the door. He gave a small chuckle, finding humor in the Witcher's words as he watched the little one nibble her roll. Judging by the mix-match of pastries and weapons he assumed this was the partner the Witcher was speaking of. How odd it must seem to those with no familiarity of Hobbits, seeing her nestled sweetly into her chair with a plethora of weapons adorning her.

He made his way casually over to the table, nodding at the Elf woman and speaking to the Hobbit, "Am I safe to assume you are traveling for the King? I believe I met with a man of your party. He directed me this way." He would've gone on in sarcastic detail of the Witcher given the slight irritants of the man's instruction and the fact he didn't give a name, but thought otherwise. Friends of his may take humor the same way he guessed the Witcher did, unhappily. It was at that thought when he noticed both women held the same yellow eyes as the man that his heart sank. Just how many Witchers are there on this thing? Am I to be the only normal one?

"Let's start with this. My name is Khiari, and my expertise is close-range combat." She showed the halfling the claws on her fingers. "I can use these not only to slice up the enemies, but to scale walls with ease, since I have retractable versions of them on my feet." She grabbed another sweetroll and took a small bite from it. "As long as I don't get arrested for telling you, I'm a cat burglar when these jobs aren't flowing in. I don't steal from the innocent, no. I steal from the rich and corrupt, and sell my spoils on the black market. Oh, and those coins i gave you were pickpocketed from a man that was disrespecting his wife in public." She felt pretty smug about what she did to get the coins that she gave to the halfling.

"Well now, I can't fault you for being honest about your thieving ways now can I?" said Paige as the elf explained what she could do, "It's a pleasure to meet you Khiari."

She was going to say more but was distracted by the man she had noticed before walking up to her and starting a conversation. A blush began to spread across her cheeks, the man was actually talking to her but who was she kidding? Someone like him would barely even look at her, men like him liked height, a girl could still hope though right?

"You assume correctly," she said, giving him a bright smile, "It seems that you've already met Stone, it's just like him to send everyone who trys to talk to him towards me. He's such a grump. Can I interest you in a honey cake?"

It occured to her that she was being somewhat wasteful with the cakes but she didn't really mind, she hadn't had to pay for them and sweets were a great way to make new friends, besides, they'd be stale the next day.

"I'm Starling but you can call me Paige," she said, "What do I call you?"

Gavin

A broad smile graced his lips as the Hobbit declared his assumption correct. The sinking feeling in his gut began to lighten discovering the girl wasn't like the other Witcher. This one seemed happy and helpful whereas the other, Stone, he doubted could barely crack a smile. He wasn't aware just how hungry he was until the cake's aroma hit his nose. "Many thanks, Paige," he smiled taking the pastry, "I'm actually quite hungry." Before diving into the sweet roll he unconsciously pulls himself together, an old habit from his noble upbringing. One must always keep a certain presentation about themselves. First impressions were key in meeting people and making good business. Though, none of that hoity-toity stuff truly mattered to him, unless the time called for it, he still carried himself like a gentleman. "My name is Gavin. Pleasure to meet you both." He nodded to Paige and the elf respectfully and sank his teeth into the bread, savoring it's sweetness. He smiled to himself, taking note of the little one's flushed face. She reminded him of his sister.

He quickly brushed the thoughts away, not wanting to wander down memory lane and decided to study the elf. She seemed to be content ignoring his presence, which made him wonder exactly how this job would go. The only friendly face belonged to Paige, but it was a comfort at least. In truth he could easily ignore the others and keep to the job at hand. It was something he was used to, playing nice until a job was done, but who really wanted that? It bored him greatly as a child and it wasn't something he grew out of. Everyone liked some sort of company. After devouring his treat he turned back to the Hobbit. "If you don't mind, little sister, I have several questions and you seem to be the only one willing to answer," His stomach rose in his throat upon the name he called her. It just slipped out, but he held himself naturally and hoped she wouldn't take notice or offense. "I wont pester you now however, there's other things I'd like to take care of before the task begins."

He still stank of blood and filth and he wanted to make sure all equipment was in tip-top shape. If he was going to be traveling with a bunch of Witchers he needed to make sure he could keep up. He ran a hand over his bandanna, pulling the cloth off and letting his hazelnut hair breathe. It was just like old times: he was the odd one in the bunch, but he would manage one way or the other.

Starling

Little sister, ouch. The words stung a little but Paige kept her face calm and unreadable, after all, it was still a term of endearment and that was more than she had dared to hope for. If Gavin saw her as a sister then at least he'd feel comfortable around her. Besides, they had only just met and there was still a chance for things to change, that was the great thing about being so optimistic, you always had some way of looking for hope.

"Oh no, please, ask away, you won't be pestering me at all," she assured him, "Besides, I'm sure we have plenty of time. We won't be going anywhere untill Stone gets back and is ready to leave."

She stared in wonder as Gavin took off his bandanna. The man's hair was the exact same colour as her two brothers hair. Instantly she began to feel homesick, she couldn't remember how long it had been since she had last saw the twins. Looking at Gavin was like looking at a taller and more rugged version of them. It was taking all of her will power not to run up to the man and hug him as tight as she could, as it was she couldn't stop herself from twitching.

"This is far from fair," she muttered to herself, looking away from Gavin and switching her gaze to Khiari.

Gavin

He mentally sighed upon receiving no reaction to the 'little sister' comment. Either she ignored it or didn't mind it. Either way was fine. He didn't exactly have any friends this far from home, but he also learned from experience that it was better not to get too attached. The nickname seemed to suit Paige just fine, taking in not only her height but her personality as well. She just held that sisterly persona, but he knew with the seemingly growing number of Witchers in this party the task they'll be taking would not be easy. Lives would be lost and any amount of emotional attachment on a possible suicide mission was just asking for trouble. He learned not too long ago what damage someone held close could do and he'd be damned if he went through that again.

He finished rubbing his hand through his hair and smiled down at the Hobbit, "I shall hold you to that then." Shoving his bandanna into one of his pockets he nods once more to the girls and turns away. "I'll try and be quick, regardless. Going to run by the blacksmith, wash up a bit and procure some odds and ends." Though he knew Page would most likely wait for him, he wasn't so sure Stone would. He seemed to be the leader of this group and he had a feeling with all these Witchers around, a soft-skinned noble such as himself wouldn't be needed. He wouldn't dawdle. If one thing about his nobility he admired it was his determination. Nothing would hold him back, be it man, Witcher or beast. If he wanted something he would get it and this quest, for some odd reason, was something he desperately desired to be a part of. It was big. He could feel it. Not only would the pay out be greatly satisfying, but to feel worth again, that was priceless. People all over were in need of help and this was something he could do with his own hands on his own feet. Not too mention this was something he was good at.

He picked up his pace back-tracking towards the blacksmith, his stature straightening as his pride crept in. He was Noble born yes, but he was not afraid of getting his hands dirty.

Paige smiled as Gavin walked off, just the fact that he bothered to talk to her was refreshing after having to deal with Stone's personality, still, she couldn't help but notice that the man wasn't a witcher, this was looking to be a dangerous mission and she wasn't sure if it would be safe for someone like Gavin. She knew that if anything bad happened to him it would be all she could think about and she'd constantly blame herself.

"Well then, I'll just have to keep an eye on him," said Paige to herself, "With me watching over him it'll be like he has a guardian angel, I won't let him come to harm."

Resolving to protect Gavin at all costs she sat back in her chair and prepared to wait for Stone, her mind at ease.
