Description

Geel

Image

Name: Geel

Nickname: Rasp

Occupation: Beggar

Race: Argonian

Class: Thief

Age: Unknown

Main Profession/Skill: Thief

Minor Profession/Skill: Sneak

Backstory:
Not much is known about the Argonian known as Geel. He arrived in Cyrodiil by boat from Black Marsh, and has lived on the outskirts of the Waterfront District in the Imperial City ever since, feeding on slaughterfish and other food he could get his hands on, as well as what the beggars and other Waterfront residents gave him. He has learned to look after himself while living in Cyrodiil, and doesn't rely on others to survive very much. His voice is very raspy and quiet, and Geel suffers with a nasty cough of an unknown origin, but it has been with him throughout his life. He cannot remember his life past arriving in the Imperial City. He does not pronounce words the way they should be, so that confuses people when they speak to him. If someone wants to hurt Geel, he will do what he must to defend himself.

Personality:
Geel, when in his right frame of mind, is normally a very happy and friendly Argonian, and will treat the people he meets with the most respect and love that he knows possible. He is always ready to help someone, no matter what he has to do. Geel does not understand most cultures besides the one he knew in Black Marsh, and is often very confused when he meets other races, having not spoken to many people since he arrived in Cyrodiil.
While Geel is normally very cheerful and happy, when he is threatened or feels that he is in danger, a mist falls over his eyes and he begins to attack, flailing his arms, throwing stones, even going as far as to shout insults and spit at his opponents, anything that will either stop his enemy from attacking or hurt them. He does not like weapons, as he believes that metal is sharp and will hurt them, nor does he like armour due to the weight, and so he prefers to wear normal clothing and fights with his spells or with whatever he can get his hands on.

Appearance:
Geel is a very slim character, with not much muscle on the poor Argonian. In fact, many of the people who had seen Geel whilst he wandered around the Imperial City said that he looked 'gaunt' and 'malnourished'. He is also very small in height as well, approximately 4'0" in size compared to the Imperials, Bretons and other humanoid races of Tamriel. His scales are a crimson, bloody red colour, but the skin underneath is very lighter, almost to a maroon colour. He also has light, blue eyes, almost to the colour of the sky, as well as slit pupils like most Argonians. He has multiple horns on the back of his head, growing from the spaces between his red scales. They are not that large, but are barely noticeable from a far off distance. Compared to his scales, the horns are more of a brownish colour. However, the largest horn on his head, albeit not that large, has two small red pieces of cloth wrapped around it, with the story behind it being simple; he wears the cloth to cover up two scratches on his horn that were gifted to him for some reason that Geel cannot remember, all he knows it that they have been with him forever and he doesn't like them.

So begins...

The Sun shone down over the Imperial City Waterfront, it's heat weighing down on most people walking around the district. Geel hated Cyrodiil's constant sunshine and heat, as that wasn't the case in his home province. In Black Marsh, the climate and weather had always been very rainy and wet due to the marshy plains that Geel called home, and he preferred it to the dry weather he had to experience in this province now. But there was no part of him that wanted to return to Black Marsh, he would rather live in the hot weather in Cyrodiil than return home, there were too many bad people there, people that didn't like him, and he didn't like them either, quite frankly.

Since he had arrived in the Imperial City with no coin, no food and only the rags he called clothes on his back, Geel had no place to stay. But Geel was determined to have a decent life in Cyrodiil, and so had made his residence on the outskirts of the Waterfront District, on the small beaches going out into Luke Rumare. He had found a nice, overhanging rock for him to sleep under with his bedroll, which he had stolen from another resident of the Waterfront, and was content living off the fish that swam in the nearby waters, the ones that he could grab with his hands when he swam in the water, and the food that others had given him, like the scraps of meat from some of the food they had cooked, or some freshly-baked bread, which Geel wasn't a fan of. Geel preferred meat, things that breathed, looked, heard, saw and smelt.

But Geel didn't restrict himself to staying in the Waterfront District, any ventured many times into the inner districts of the Imperial City, learning more about the cultures and habits of the different races and families that lived in the cities. Unfortunately for Geel, a lot of the residents of the Imperial City were afraid of him due to his raspy voice, his hunched walk and his small stature, all of which made him very depressed. Geel liked to talk to others, it made him feel happy and loved. The people of the Waterfront didn't seem to mind that he lived near them, and some even brought him food and gave him company, which he appreciated.

Geel had many things he liked to do, he liked to talk to people, he liked to catch fish and eat it, but there was one thing that Geel loved to do, and that was watch people. He would spend many a day and night watching people, figuring out what they look like and noting down their schedules in a tatty, leather-backed book that he had found, and used as his journal to write down his thoughts. In the space of three months, Geel knew most people in the Imperial City. Geel especially loved it when travelers came to the Imperial City, as it gave him a chance to watch new people. Most of them, like the residents, either ignored him or gave him dirty looks or insults if they noticed him, but Geel was very good at not being spotted.

And when a new traveler arrived in the Waterfront District, Geel spotted them immediately and began to secretly follow them, whispering to himself and scribbling into his book as he tracked their movements through the district.

Tristyn's footsteps knocking across the cobble path, he made his way to the Imperial City, having heard of the fortune Arena contenders make. The thought of a crowd cheering as the sun beamed on him from above, his iron blade shining with crimson blood of his foes. That would be his goal, he decided.

Most of the folk here appeared to be looking cautiously at him, or with a smirk that suggested he was some child with a wooden sword pretending to be a knight. It mattered not, to him; Once he was set in fame, they would praise him instead.
"For honour." Tristyn murmured proudly to himself with a bold smile.

Some people did encourage him, though. When he first came to Cyrodiil, he'd met a very friendly bard who offered to sing a song of his adventures when he became particularly successful in this land. The Ayleid Ruins seemed like a good starting place once he finally had some armour of his own. So, the Arena would be his main income.

This particular adventurer was of great interest to Geel. He didn't seem like most adventurers and merchants that came to the Imperial City. He didn't look to be selling treasure, nor did he look to be buying gear, he simply looked like a rugged adventurer. Geel giggled to himself as he crept through the shaded alleyways and into the bushes as he followed the adventurer, scribbling his thoughts down in his journal scruffily and quickly as he tried to keep up.

Geel had followed him since he had arrived in the Imperial City, and not knowing the destination, he had blindly followed. Geel then realized that he had made a terrible mistake as they entered the Arena District, and whimpered to himself as he looked upon the great structure. He wasn't afraid of combat, in fact, Geel rather enjoyed it. He thought that if someone deserves to be hurt, then they should have what they deserved. But the thought of pitting two living, breathing beings against each other for no purpose gave him a sour feeling in his stomach, and so he was nervous as he continued to follow the adventurer.

The adventurer seemed very confident, very calm and looked to hold himself in high stature, and Geel had immediately decided that he liked this man. He seemed like the traditional adventurer, a staunch, brave hero like Geel had read about in the books he had stolen. He liked him, but did not understand why such a man wanted to fight in the Arena.

But unfortunately for Geel, his thoughts and feelings about the adventurer and the Arena had made Geel become a lot less sneaky than he had realized...

Strolling in through one of the many external gates, Tristyn made his way to the Arena District of the City, his heart swelling with preparation and pride. He mentally readied himself as he saw the circular structure, reciting quietly that he needed it for his destiny, although deep in his mind he knew this was a terrible profession.

Just as he was approaching the entranceway where Hundolin the ever-cheerful Bosmer, he heard the scratching of something on paper. Whipping around, he saw it was a hunched, nervous-looking Argonian with a journal in hand. Had he been following him?

"Erm... Good afternoon, Argonian." He greeted carefully, not wanting to be rude to this stranger although it was odd that he'd been followed by him. Still, maybe he had good intentions. Maybe he had already heard of his minor ventures?

It may have been Geel's mutters or his frantic writing, but the traveler quickly spun on his heel and found Geel immediately in the bushes, causing the Argonian to stand upright to the best of his ability in shock, dropping his journal and charcoal piece in the process. Noticing he had done this, Geel scrambled to pick up his belongings, still muttering to himself in the process, before huddling them close to his chest and hunching over even more to protect them.

"Erm... Good afternoon, Argonian." The traveler had greeted him with. Geel smiled to himself, he had never been treated with such manners by a random stranger, most didn't even wish to speak with him.

Geel grinned at the stranger, his teeth showing over his bottom lip, and muttered something to himself, before beginning to cough for a second, before he looked at the stranger once more.

"You-you wants to...to speak to us?" Geel said, his body language showing the stranger that he was shy and afraid. "No-one ever speaks to us, believed we were invisible, we did." Geel was trying his best to be friendly, but didn't know if his politeness was the same in Black Marsh as it was in Cyrodiil.

Tristyn observed the Argonian for a moment. He was clearly being cautious, and fearful; Was he anxious of meeting him because of who he was, or because he appeared to be a fighter? Either way, he should show he was no threat. So, Tristyn smiled and replied.

"Well, I'd like to know your name, and I am curious as to why you've been following me so stealthily." He said in what he hoped was a friendly manner. He'd heard drunken Nord men in bars ranting on how Argonians were pests that deserved to be killed. Tristyn certainly thought this was stupid; Argonian merchants often had rather nice wares, and their race was nice enough overall.

Geel watched closely as the stranger observed him. Did he wish to hurt him? Geel hoped not, but just in case, Geel looked around for anything that could be used to his advantage. But then Geel watched as the stranger smiled at him, which eased him a little.

"Well, I'd like to know your name, and I am curious as to why you've been following me so stealthily." Geel listened to the man's words, he seemed to of the nice sort and was obviously trying to be friendly, which Geel liked.

"We, we don't know our names, but people here call us Geel." Geel couldn't remember his life in Black Marsh, it was cloudy, like a fog had covered a part of his memory and couldn't be cleared. All he could remember about Black Marsh were the bad memories, the mean people who raised their voices and threw things. He didn't like remembering that.
"I, I follow you because you new. You not familiar to me..and I know everyone here."

Knowing that Geel was probably an outcast in this city, that perhaps he slept in the Waterfront, Tristyn could see how desperate for friends he was, thinking he hadn't already been whispered to by various citizens of some strange Argonian. So, he was willing to be kind.

"Well, Geel, pleased to meet you. My name is Tristyn, and I am new here because I am seeking adventure in the land, unfortunately I only have the blade I forged..." He informed him with a sigh. "As much as I hate criminals... It would be helpful if er..." Tristyn leaned forward slightly. "...You could pick Hundolin's chest lock tonight." He whispered almost silently. He needed money fast, and at the moment, the opportunity had risen.

"Well, Geel, pleased to meet you. My name is Tristyn, and I am new here because I am seeking adventure in the land, unfortunately I only have the blade I forged..." Geel watched him sigh, and looked confused. Most people that Geel had the pleasure of talking to would most likely be proud of forging their own blade, but from the sigh Geel gathered that perhaps Tristyn wasn't. "As much as I hate criminals... It would be helpful if er..." Geel backed off a little as Tristyn leaned forwards, a little unnerved by the man. "...You could pick Hundolin's chest lock tonight."

Geel was taken aback by this, and scratched the scales on the top of his head. The man stood before him looked like an adventurer capable of making money, but asking Geel to steal was unexpected by the Argonian, to say the least. Geel had no clue what that particular Bosmer kept in the lockbox, but Geel knew that he definitely didn't have the tools to break into the box.
"We, we have no tools. No, no tools for the job, we cannot do what you want without tools."

"Which must mean you're not experienced..." He said slowly, leaning back again with a small frown, although he added; "But eventually, I'm sure I will be able to buy the necessary arms for me to go out for my journey. Plus, I'll give you a share of my wage, how about that?" Tristyn offered with a huge smile.

After all, maybe Geel had some other skills too, that they could put to work out in the land of Cyrodiil. Plus, any skills WOULD be a huge aid, another fighter at your side could be helpful.

While he was thinking all of this, he stood there silently, staring into space before suddenly announcing, "Well! Time for me to make my fortune!"

"Which must mean you're not experienced..." Geel watched curiously as Tristyn leaned back and frowned, twisting his head to the side and looking at this person. He was trying to be nice, Geel could tell, but what he had just said didn't seem nice, in Geel's opinion. Was Geel being tricked? Did this person actually hate him and mean him harm? Geel took a backstep and hissed a little, before beginning to mutter to himself again.

"But eventually, I'm sure I will be able to buy the necessary arms for me to go out for my journey. Plus, I'll give you a share of my wage, how about that?"
Geel looked up, grinning and eyes wide. He giggled and began bouncing up and down in excitement, still muttering to himself, this time in a happy fashion. This person meant gold, he wanted to give Geel gold! Geel loved gold more than anything else in the world, it was yellow, it was shiny and it felt nice and cool in his hands, he loved it.
"Yes! Geel want to help! Geel want to help new friend, new friend is nice to us! He offers us Gold!"

Geel waited for an answer from his new friend for a while, who seemed to be silently watching the sky. Geel wondered why he did this, was he watching something? Was there something interesting in the sky? Geel didn't think so. Geel didn't like the sky, all it was blue with white, fluffy things floating in it.
"Well! Time for me to make my fortune!"
Geel jumped back a little as his new friend announced this to the world, before leaning back in talk. He wondered what he meant when he said it was time, hadn't he already been doing it? Geel didn't know, he hoped that this man had more gold than he did, so that he could take it and go home if this man was tricking him. But, for now, Geel would help.
"You, you want to be Warrior, yes? There, big place, big circle, with strange little man outside. There is a lot of shouting and bangs, crashes, a lot of stuff. People get hurt there, but those that don't get cheered and recognized. Geel has heard about this place, visited it and listened to it."

Tristyn listened to Geel with a curious smile on his face all the while he periodically checked the sky to make sure they didn't linger here babbling. Tristyn was glad the Argonian would aid him in his journey of capturing many hearts, although he noticed money was on Geel's horizon. It would be necessary for both their destinies, he thought.

"I understand people get hurt there, Geel, but I'm no good at anything else apart from smithing metal and using my blade." He sighed, the shocked look on people's faces when they heard all he wanted was to be an adventurer. "Much to my accursed family's displeasure." He added in an angry mutter, taking a deep breath with a bold look on his face. "Wish me luck." Tristyn finished, turning round to walk to the left door, Hundolin still with what appeared to be a bored expression, drinking mead as he sat at the table.

"I understand people get hurt there, Geel, but I'm no good at anything else apart from smithing metal and using my blade."
Geel chuckled. Everyone was good at fighting, Geel believed. It was a natural instinct for him, and he would do whatever he could to try and survive against someone who wanted to hurt him, at least that what Geel thought about fighting.
"Much to my accursed family's displeasure."
Geel watched Tristyn mutter angrily. Geel didn't understand, he thought people loved family. Geel had never known his family, and believed that he was different to normal Argonians. He had learned to speak by listening to others, he had learned to eat by killing things, he had learned to survive on his own. Geel wished he had a family, but he knew he could never have one.
"Wish me luck."
Geel smiled as Tristyn entered the Bloodworks to the left, before grabbing his journal and scratching more things about Tristyn into it. He smiled and followed Tristyn into the Bloodworks, keeping to the shadows to make sure nobody saw him at all. This man, against all others, had been nice to Geel, and now faced certain death fighting for glory and honour. Geel wouldn't let that happen, he wanted to help his new friend from dying, and if he had to sign up for the Arena, then that's what he would do.

Tristyn stepped into the dark staircase of the Bloodworks, a strange feeling of claustrophobia creeping up on him as he entered the dimly lit room; all he could see or hear was metal (or the Dunmer practicing with his fists) on straw, wood or bags. There seemed to be the sound of growling from the corner of the room, but Tristyn didn't investigate.

Owyn was sat in the corridor part to the left, a Yellow Team combatant ignoring him as she practiced in what appeared to be the Blue Team's side of the building, but Tristyn ignored this feature and approached the dark-skinned, armoured Redguard to sign up to fight in the Arena. He was still unaware of Geel behind him, though. Bracing himself mentally, Tristyn was then barked at by the man;
"I don't know who you are friend, but you've got about ten seconds to tell me what you're doing in my Bloodworks before I lop your arms off!" in what Tristyn thought was an extremely rude manner, although he calmly responded.
"I'm here to sign up as a fighter in the Arena." with a brave look (at least he hoped so) at the Redguard.

Geel followed Tristyn down the dark staircase, keeping to the shadows to the best of his ability. He knew that Tristyn wouldn't appreciate Geel's stalking, but Geel wanted to help, or at least see if Tristyn could handle himself. As he went further down and down into the Bloodworks, Geel began to slightly regret his decision. The place was dark, dirty and smelled of blood and sweat, something that Geel's sense found repulsive and vile.

As he entered the main room in the Bloodworks, Geel hid in the shadows to the right of the staircase. He looked around, his eyesight helping him in the darkness. He looked to the right and saw an Orc, wearing white armour with red cloth in it, training his sword-arm techniques against a metal plate. He looked pale, but Geel knew he had seen this particular Orc somewhere before. He didn't care though, and looked around some more, watching a Dunmer hitting a punching bag with a variety of different punches and kicks. Geel had grown up knowing about the Dunmer's hatred of his people, and he didn't like Dunmer very much because of it, so he was very cautious about staying in the shadows when near this particular Dunmer.

Geel watched as Tristyn walked up to the Redguard stood near him. He was a middle-aged fellow, and wore a complete set of Iron armour. Geel didn't like heavy armour, he thought it weighed you down and made you more of a target. In fact, Geel had a huge distaste to armour in general, and preferred to wear normal clothes because he believed that he was too quick to be hurt.

"I don't know who you are friend, but you've got about ten seconds to tell me what you're doing in my Bloodworks before I lop your arms off!"
Geel couldn''t believe what he was hearing. Was this man just incredibly rude, or was their history between these two men? Geel didn't know, but he did know that he didn't like this Redguard's attitude. Tristyn had stayed calm though, which Geel probably wouldn't have been able to do.
"I'm here to sign up as a fighter in the Arena."
Geel smiled, Tristyn had taken his advice. Not many people listened to Geel, and even more didn't even want to recognize that he existed. But now there was someone who liked him, and Geel liked them as well.

"You what? You want to be a combatant?" The man scoffed with a laugh, " Look at you! My granny could beat you, and she's dead! Wait, you're serious, aren't you? What is it with you people? You walk in here, want to be combatants, and your entrails end up decorating my Red Room. All right. It's your funeral. Welcome to the Arena, you filthy Pit Dog," (Tristyn assumed this was a rank or an insult), "You're free to fight, so long as you know the rules of competition." At hearing this, Tristyn had to hide a smile; upon reaching higher ranks, he'd be revered by this man, surely.

"Well, how about you tell me the rules, then?" Smirked Tristyn, drawing himself up to full height. Owyn, ignoring his attempts at looking brave, informed Tristyn of the various conditions for fighting in the Arena:
  • You must wear a Battle Raiment during the matches, but you can have your own shield, weapon and helmet.
  • No looting of corpses
  • Matches take place between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM.

Owyn then questioned Tristyn which Battle Raiment he wanted, to which Tristyn with a smile, responded;
"Heavy.", making Owyn look slightly less annoyed somehow, remarking how it was strong and he should wear it proudly.
"So, can I partake in a match?" Tristyn asked with an eager look, hurriedly pulling on his Raiment- which seemed to glow slightly, giving him an odd feeling of power.
"Yes, so get up there!" He replied with a roll of his eyes. "Going to get himself killed." He muttered contemptously, not noticing Geel in the midst of this.

You what? You want to be a combatant? Look at you! My granny could beat you, and she's dead! Wait, you're serious, aren't you? What is it with you people? You walk in here, want to be combatants, and your entrails end up decorating my Red Room. All right. It's your funeral. Welcome to the Arena, you filthy Pit Dog,"
Pit Dog? Geel wondered. Was this an insult? Geel believed it was, but it could have been a title. If this was indeed a title, it was a mocking title, and Geel didn't want to be called that, but it seemed he had no choice. Geel had signed up to the Arena, although he had never talked to Owyn about it.
You're free to fight, so long as you know the rules of competition."

Geel didn't like rules. Rules bound people, sometimes to something they didn't want to bound to. But if that is what it took to help his friend, Geel would bear these rules and continue to help his friend. Geel listened with content as Owyn explained the rules to Tristyn.
  • You must wear a Battle Raiment during the matches, but you can have your own shield, weapon and helmet.
  • No looting of corpses
  • Matches take place between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM.

After he had explained everything, Owyn asked Tristyn what type of Battle Raiment he wanted, to which Tristyn replied "Heavy." Geel hated armour, but like everything else, he would bear with it to help his friend. Knowing that he couldn't get one from Owyn, he would just have to do what he did best, and that was steal one. And so, Geel stuck to the shadows, sneaking past everyone near him, and cleanly opened one of the cabinets near the Red Room and took out the lightest Battle Raiment he could get his hands on, before quickly strapping it on and waiting for the Red Room's gates to open and Tristyn to walk inside, so that he could secretly join him.

Once the huge iron gates pulled up with a clatter, Tristyn hurried energitacally up the steps past the strange circular glass table that was dotted with dried blood. Ignoring this, Tristyn found himself in the tunnel with the second iron gate in front of him, to where he expected the crowd to be cheering and the bright sun giving him a spotlight in the cool air.

But it was not like that.

Instead, he found there was a sharp blast of cold running around his body, chilling him to the point of goosebumps. The sun was in the sky, but grey clouds passed it concealingly, plus the crowd was rather quiet, with the occasional shouts of 'Fight!'.
The worst part was that there were bones scattered near him, most broken, with crushed skulls donning dented and rusty helmets.
Even the Arena horrified Tristyn!
Blood was smeared on the walls, the columns aged with pieces turned to stones on the sand near them. In the middle, Tristyn saw a large circular grate that was absolutely covered in crimson, bones, broken armour and lost weapons.
Tristyn was beginning to regret this with a nervous swallow, especially as he saw what his opponent had...

A murderous-looking Orc with a massive iron battle-axe, wearing Heavy Raiment and a leather helm.
"Gods preserve me." He croaked.

Geel watched as Tristyn walked into the Red Room, and swiftly followed, sticking to the shadows so that his friend couldn't see him. He looked around the Red Room, and Geel realized what gave this room its name. Blood soaked the walls, dried and flaky. There was a glass table in the middle, also soaked with the blood that dripped from the ceiling above. Everything abut this place sent a chill up Geel's spine, but he was determined to not let it unnerve him.

He followed Tristyn up the steps and through the tunnel, but waited in the tunnel, in the darkness where he couldn't be seen. But there was something Geel noticed about Tristyn now...it seemed he was afraid. Geel thought it was his imagination and braced for the gates to open and the fight to start.

"Gods preserve me." Geel had heard Tristyn mutter, but he was wrong.

They wouldn't be dying here today.

The iron gates for both sides slid up, the crowd suddenly enthusiastic as the Orc stepped out quickly, his furious eyes intent on Tristyn, who also walked out with, bravely gripping his sword as he readied himself for the attacks. They slowly closened each other, circling carefully.
In all this, nobody seemed to be noticing Geel.

With the sunlight forcing Tristyn to close his left eye, the Orc suddenly roared and swung his axe down at Tristyn's head, his instinct immediately making him jump to the side, the Orc angrily recoiling as he fell forward. Tristyn took the chance and stabbed at what flesh the Orc exposed, slashing his back and jumping hurriedly back again as blood flowed out; the Orc yelled again, his helmet falling off in the process, enraged and charged at Tristyn again with his axe, who had to run away to stop the assailant from beheading him.
"Come back here, COWARD!" He shouted, still not seeing Geel.
