Two protagonists must travel to the enemy realm to stop the outbreak of war between their kingdoms. But will they succeed? CLOSED.

Introduction

This board is a private roleplay between Music and Katharos. Please do not submit a character; it will not be accepted.

In the mythical realm of Shyn, royalty serves its people.

For the kingdom of Thrut, this is not always a good thing. After all, the aged king is slightly delusional, and he only has one heir: a young daughter, who, though intelligent, must watch out for her life, as her kingdom must work quite hard to defend its land from two other empires.

In a desperate attempt to avoid war, she must travel to the enemy kingdom Porl accompanied only by the Head General's son, who, though an apt guard, is quite young as well. As it goes, the attempt will fail badly. How can the kingdom survive the war? And how will the princess escape?

The kingdom of Thrut had always prospered. Long before the kingdom teetered on the brink of war, the plains lush with crops and mountains ripe with ore brought many riches and honors to the house of the king. While the population and landmass of Thrut were small, the people respected their King and loved their lives with vigor.

But now, the same fruits of Fate had brought a swarm of locusts to the kingdom. The threat comes from the enemy kingdom Porl. Not much is known about the politics of that kingdom, just that they have a large population, little landmass, and few resources. The hostilities between Thrut and Porl should come as no surprise; after all, Porl is desperate, and Thrut is in the way of their prize.

In the meantime, the exalted King of Thrut has been developing some mental instabilities. He has become delusional, forgetting his duties or even his rank. That pushes the responsibilities as leader of Thrut onto his daughter, the beautiful Alleysea Goldenleaf. Therefore, she must travel to Porl and attempt to save her kingdom via treaty. A desperate mission indeed; there is almost no chance that the enemy will be willing to negotiate, and, if thrust into war, Thrut is almost certain to lose.

Of course, she can't travel alone.

A palomino horse, galloping over the hills to Edetser, pulled to a stop in front of the city gates. Two guards walked out from the guard house, preventing the cloaked rider from approaching any closer. "Halt! What is your business in the capital?"

The rider removed his cloak, showing the face of a god. An angry god. "I'm Mason Giles, son of the General. I'm here on the King's business. Open up!"

No one, of course, dared deny the young man his prize. After all, he was practically the prince of the kingdom, even if his birth dictated simply that he would have great weapons skill, not royalty. The iron gates screeched against the cobblestones as they slid opened. Clicking his tongue, Mason was off again, still in a great rush. After all, his task was more important than anyone else in the entire kingdom.

Except, of course, for the one he was escorting.

The palace, in all its glory, towered over the rest of Edetser, a jewel in the sunlight. Mason didn't really take in its glory, as he anticipated meeting Princess Alleysea. While he had greeted the King before and heard of her great beauty, he had never actually seen her, let alone greeted her.

Finally, he reached the great steps. Tying his horse to a nearby pillar, he muttered softly, "Wait here," and walked athletically up the stairs. Near the entrance was a man who was presumably a herald, from the look of his attire. "Greetings, sir," said Mason, ever the polite one. "I'm Mason Giles, here on behalf of our kingdom. May I see the Princess?"

"Out of my way"
The order came once but the guards opened the door before the command was even on her lips. She entered the great bedchamber with her pouch hanging low on her waist.
"open the curtains for goodness sake!" She snapped at the maids hurried to the task while the girl sat on the bed and looked down at her father. He had once been a great man but now he rarely had his periods of lucid thought. She pulled out a few unguents and rubbed them all over his knee joints and his fingers. Then she sat hip up with the help of a maid and fed him warm broth. With a basin she helped him relieve himself and then changed the covers. She would not allow anyone else be near her father in this state, only those who could be trusted. If anyone else learned about this, they would try to take advantage and even now they were already doing terrible things.
Two days ago a farmer had arrived from the southern border with tales she could barely believe. Men in armor would cross the border and raid the farms taking produce and livestock. They would rape the women, kill the men and steal the children.
She paced back and forth staring down at her father wondering when she could take the crown and command the army, but so far her father was still alive and many were not so sure about having a girl on the throne. And less if she was as willful and arrogant as she was known to be.

"Alleysea" Her father's voice was clear and she went to him.
"yes father?"
"I know what must be going on at this moment. I understand...I am not right anymore, but you are young and you can fix this. Go to Porl. Go to Furia their capital and make a treaty with them. Offer them the jewel of this kingdom "
She took a step back. "That I cannot do. It was my mothers"
Her father shook his head "Not that....but yourself...Offer yourself . Take gold and women and beautiful clothes and oils and silver...and offer yourself"
Her face turned dark "I will not whore myself! Not for you! Not for this country! Not for anything!"
Her father laughed weakly "No, no you silly girl...in marriage"
Alleysae stormed out of the room, with her skirts swishing back and forth. She could still remember her father's words.
"I already called for the man who will take you to Porl"

How dare he?

But still she wondered if that was her best choice. She decided finally while her maid curled her hair and arranged her crown. She wore a dress of dark green , with long fluttery sleeves. It had a gold threaded belt with a jewel on the front that hung low on her waist.
"My lady I heard that the General's son is very handsome'' the maid whispered. Alleysae raised a brow. she had heard of him. She had even seen him once or twice...but she found him irritating and annoying plus all of the whispers said that most thought him the prince of Thurl.
She pushed her shoulders back and stood up "Handsome he might be...but he will always be a commoners son"
with that she turned on her heel and moved down to the throne room where someone waited for her.

She stepped into the throne room and raised her brow. It seemed the son of the commoner was here after all "Did the devil summon you" She asked dryly and then sat on the throne. It was too big for her and she looked like a child on it, but that did not faze her.
"what is it then?"

Mason, who had been standing with his hands crossed behind his back, had been people-watching. It seemed to him that the crowd of nobles in this environment was composed of a bunch of snobs who happened to be better-dressed than him. He turned away, face dark with contempt and slight jealousy.

However, his face brightened when a side door opened, revealing a beautiful young woman. Her dark hair was piled on top of her head in an elaborate do, while her green dress was fitting for a... well, a princess. And aptly so; she carried herself in a manner that only a princess really could, with her graceful superiority to every other creature in the room. Most of whom looked up as she took her place on her father's throne.

"Did the devil summon you?" Mason looked at her in more focus, startled. It was the princess, Alleysea. She looked childish and small in such a large seat. And yet, she had a tongue. Mason bowed, as was probably appropriate. "No, milady, I am-" "What is it then?"

She had interrupted him. He stifled his growing irritation and continued talking to a sovereign, not a spoiled child. Of course, he didn't know how long he could hold in his temper if Princess Alleysea continued to act like a spoiled brat... "Your father has summoned me to escort you to the capital of Porl, to attempt to save the kingdom." He had no details on the matter, just that he would take her and a carriage of fine gifts to the enemy kingdom. "We will be accompanied by four of the best guards in the entire army." He hoped that she would not sass him. For both of their sakes.

"Escort me? " Her face was controlled but anger was brewing inside her. Her father had decided everything too fast and had not seen fit to tell her who would take her or hwo she would go. "Well if my father thinks is best why should i deny him" But her words were insolent and clipped.
"But do you truly think four guards will be able to protect me and my women. " She tossed her head and motioned for a woman to get near her. She whispered to the woman "Will you see that the throne room is emptied. I wish to discuss this in private"

Lately she had turned quite suspicious of almost everybody. Her food had to be tasted before she ate it and she slept with a dirk under her pillow.
Once they were alone she stood from the throne and walked down the stairs towards him. Her face was blank of any emotion.
She stood for a few seconds and then bowed her head a bit, more like a regal nod. "Thank you. You might not know this, but my father has not been himself for quite a while and everything is falling down" She stopped abruptly. He did not have to be informed of all the on goings.
'Your job is to take me to Porl where I am to ask for a treaty with the king of Porl. I am to take gold and scented oils and fine clothes and two beautiful women. Plus the greatest treasure of Thurl; the sword of Eldine.'

Her face blank before now was very fierce . The sword of Eldine was a relic to all of them. The sword that the first king had used to defend his country, by all rights she was supposed to wield it into battle. However, she was to give it to the king of Porl. She turned away and added
"I am to ask him to be my husband if nothing else works. I am to give him Thurl in a silver platter"
Her shoulders were stiff and her voice was full of anger as she looked at him again "but if he dares to destroy its beauty i will poison him and stab him in the heart"

"Ready your guards and the best carriage. I will ride and the women will be in the carriage. The sword will be with me at all times"
If by any chance they were robbed, she could defend her inheritance.

The anger in the princess's voice was clear, and Mason's instinct was either to cower or to grow angry. Fortunately for him, he did neither, standing his ground. "Escort me? Well, if my father thinks is best, why should I deny him? He could tell that there was more to this story than she was revealing, and that her anger wasn't truly intended for him. "But do you truly think four guards will be able to protect me and my women?" Mason nodded, ignoring the nervous fluttering in his stomach; after all, he would never be able to live it down if he failed to keep her safe. "Princess, there is only so much we can do to make your passage safe. I feel that you and your women will be in the best of hands."

Then she surprised him; the throne room quickly emptied at her command. Did she trust him so easily? No, but she trusted her father, and Mason was here on behalf of the king. She drew close, probably to keep their voices hushed. "Thank you. You might not know this, but my father has not been himself for quite a while and everything is falling down..." She drifted, and Mason wondered if she had dropped off in thought. At least her voice was relatively civil. "Your job is to take me to Porl where I am to ask for a treaty with the king of Porl. I am to take gold and scented oils and fine clothes and two beautiful women. Plus the greatest treasure of Thurl; the sword of Eldine." Mason knew that such was tradition; there was no way that Thurl could withstand the armies of Porl. Times were desperate. But Mason, raised in the military, hated with all of his being to give up something with so much history and value. Alleysea clearly agreed, as displayed by the tension on her face.

But then she turned, and Mason watched her carefully, trying to read her. Was that fear that he detected on her proud features? "I am to ask him to be my husband if nothing else works. I am to give him Thurl in a silver platter... but if he dares to destroy its beauty I will poison him and stab him in the heart." Something told Mason that she would hold true to this sentiment. She was strong. She would not give herself without a fight.

For some reason, Mason wanted to be on her side when that fight came. He vowed within his heart to make sure that the young woman had something to hold on to when everything fell apart, as it was bound to.

"Ready your guards and the best carriage. I will ride and the women will be in the carriage. The sword will be with me at all times." Mason nodded; he mentally examined his checklist. He would need to gather the guards first, then ready the carriage; he was much too anal about certain things to allow anyone else to fulfill such duties, particularly when he privately feared that the guards cared much less for the mission than he would have preferred.

And off he went, to the stables. Where he had told the guards to wait.

The guards were a merry bunch; they had made good friends with each other on the way to Edetser. Mason was at least five year younger than all of them. They didn't care too much for the fact that Mason was actually superior to all of them in many ways, including his fighting skills and horsemanship. For the most part, they ignored him, unless he was giving them instructions. He kept the contact they had to a minimum, since he didn't care too terribly much for any of them either.

After telling them the plan, he headed toward the royal carriages, leading his light palomino mare. When she saw the many coaches, all lined side by side, she almost spooked, but Mason stroked her nose and whispered to her in a soft voice. Then he began his rounds.

He was not looking for the most luxurious carriage. That would be stupid, since the bandits and raiders and enemies would instantly target such a thing. They needed something that could pass through the treacherous mountains, something that was durable and sturdy and could hold (and hide) the treasures and protect the women.

And then, he saw it.

It was a small carriage, with only enough room for one person to control the two horses and two people to sit inside. The wheels were freshly added, but the sides had clearly endured quite a bit of abuse, meaning that the wagon was secure and sturdy. The back half was well-protected, only accessible from the front of the carriage, and had enough room for all of the treasure that they could possibly need.

Mason waved over a nearby stableboy. "Find me two of the best horses. I want ones that can pull this carriage all the way to Porl if need be." He didn't mention that Porl was actually the destination. The boy nodded and ran off.

Then a servant walked from a nearby door to the kitchen. "Sir, we have food and treasure."

Mason nodded absently, then registered what he was saying. "Lead me to it, and I'll help carry it to the carriage."

By the time Mason and the boy had finished loading their supplies, the two horses had been hooked to the front. The guards, loitering around, had their own horses. They looked sullen when Mason told them that one of them would be driving the carriage and would need to leave his steed behind. Mason, seeing two women exit the back door of the kitchen, clutching beautiful cloaks, reminded himself to keep an eye on the guards and one more covered his head with his hood.

Princess alleysae was not a tall woman, or a plumb woman or a woman to do what was expected of her. She did not ride the gentle mares that ladies society rode, nor did she ride side saddle. She sat straight and proud on her destrier. A war horse and massive in size. The muscles rippled in the sun and his mouth snorted impatiently. Alleysae commanded him with her thighs and the horse cantered forward.
She was clad in leather breeches and a black tunic cinched at her waist with a leather belt with a bronze buckle. Her mane of hair had been braided back and she wore tall boots. Her bow was in her lap. Massive and of yew wood. It curved at the middle, taut like a girls flat belly. she unlike the hunters of the era did not use a quiver but an arrow bag that was water proof.

Two women came out, small and willowy with blond silvery hair that fell down their backs. They were dressed in finery and looked like princesses. They had a sweet face with a rose bow as a mouth.
They were the daughters of the sister to the deceased queen. Allesay's cousins and she was selling them to the enemy with what seemed no remorse at all.
Their mother came out with a cry and hugged her daughters to her breast "alleysae...I beg you..spare my daughters...not my daughters...choose any other maid...any other girl...but leave them...they are your blood"

Alleysae stared down at her and hissed "control yourself... what is done is done. They are of royal blood and can appease the king of Porl...shall i take them our washing woman...our kitchen girl, the scullery maid...a whore from the streets? The insult would destroy us"
"there are other nobles...with other girls..." the woman begged and the girls sobbed in their mother's breast.
"they are by far the most beautiful of the land" Alleysae said coldly and motioned to the guards who grabbed the girls and pulled them from their mother. The girls clung fiercely sobbing louder while their mother cried "please...please...not them...not them"
"Control yourself Madame" Alleysae snapped and the woman collapsed as her daughters were taken away.

She ordered her horse forward but the woman threw herself in front of the horse "I beg you...I beg you...I will give you anything" And Alleysae's face broke from her controlled fury. she jumped from her horse and took the woman by the arm digging her nails into her skin " I have to sell myself too...and what mother is calling to me to stop myself. What mother is stopping me from riding to Porl and selling myself. It is for our country and for our people. Have some dignity and control yourself"
A guard took her aunt gently and led her back into the castle and Alleysae stood there shaking and then lifting her chin she climbed back onto her horse and rode to meet the man who would go with her.

On the day that Alleysae Goldenleaf collected treasure for Porl it came to amount to three chests of gold coin, four suits of finely wrought armor, ten royal dresses of silk threaded with gold and studded with gems., five war horses -trained and very expensive- two barrels of scented oils and the sword of eldine the hung on her waist. The scabbard was simple and it was not the scabbard of the sword but another to hide the fact that she carried it. The real sheath sat nestled between the dresses.
The sword itself was balanced and light and had a blue sheen to it. This sword would never rust or need sharpening and holding it Alleysae felt like she could conquer the world. The power rushed trough her hand and it made her reckless. With this sword she could face the King of Porl and demand to be left alone. With this sword she could defend her country.
She put it back in the scabbard and the feeling left her.
A guard called to her and she answered but she was distracted with the shock of holding the sword. She rode towards the carriage loading the treasure in and gave a nod of approval. Sturdy and it did not look like it carried more than it should. From the carriage she heard muffled sobs and with a groan she spurred her horse a bit forward.
She did not want to sell the girls...but everyone had to sacrifice something and for her country she would give up almost anything.

OOC: Sorry for not posting; life got really busy, really fast.

Mason turned away from his work to see two beautiful princesses, willowy with sleek blond hair, timidly cross the lot and stand awkwardly, clearly not knowing what they were to do. Approaching respectfully, Mason bowed. "Misses, follow me for your carriage," he said.

A large number of horses was being dragged across the area as well. Mason groaned aloud, realizing that these majestic beasts would also be gifts to Porl. That meant that he would have to bring them along on the journey as well, meaning that they would be at even greater risk for death and danger. Still, he tied their bridles to the back of the wagon, signifying that they were in his care and he was supposed to be taking care of them.

Suddenly, like a mirage of beauty, Alleysea appeared. She did not ride like a woman, but carried herself proudly atop a powerful charger, wearing the attire of the wilderness. He barely stopped himself from wolf-whistling and quivering in fear; she held him in no respect. And, possibly within good reason, if she could actually use that bow strapped to her back.

He approached, giving the guards a cold look; they had not been as self-controlled as he had. "Your Highness, the carriage is ready. We can leave now, if you desire." He hoped that Alleysea would agree to that. After all, it was clear that people in this city regarded him differently than other villagers had.

She frowned at the soldiers but did not rebuke them. Instead she checked the rest of the things and nodded approvingly.
"yes" She looked up at the sky. It was a clear day , with nary a cloud in the sky.
"It will be best to leave today"
And then she cantered forward with the guards quickly flanking her. "two of you at the back" she snapped "I do not need protection..the rest of the things do"
With that her horse trotted down the cobbled path. The gates of the castle were massive and made of strong wood with steel reinforcement. A guard up in the tower opened the gates for them . They entered the royal road into the large city of Edetser. The city had been built in a hill and her caravan descended the wide cobbled road that opened into the city plaza. She went around the large statue of the first King of Thurl. For a few seconds she gazed up at his fierce expression, the way his body stood as if ready to destroy his enemies. In his hand a large replica of the sword of Eldine was held. On his other hand he had the lost shield of Ameth.
She continued forward trying to forget the pride and glory of her country. It used to be great, a major force to be reckoned with and now she was nothing more than an expensive prostitute.

The plaza was full of merchants selling their wares, of urchins and workers. They opened a path for her to pass and her heart softened. She was doing this for them. Past the business district with their open stores and cooking smell, into the housing district where the large houses of nobility stood high and fancy. Then the poor area began with the men hollowed eye stared at her and the women tending their wash outside the shacks and broken buildings hid their faces from their princess. She lifted her chin and finally entered the Gatekeeper's point. Merhants trying to enter the city were bring searched, papers were being checked and the Gatekeeper was screaming at one guard to hurry up because the Princess Caravan was on it's way.
"Master Gatekeeper we are here" The princess called and the burly man turned around "so you are my dear Lady"
"I will ask you for a favor Master Gatekeeper"
"Anything" he answered.
"I want this gate reinforced and the walls checked for any holes. If anything was to happen, this city must stand...I want warriors called from Drelek and archers from Susa...I want this city to stand...even if nothing else will..."
The gatekeeper did not contradict her but nodded his head, knowing from the gravity of her words that something must be brewing.
"Shall I warn the other cities"
She nodded her head "ask them to light their watchtower...if anything was to happen...and..please fill the granary with food to feed an army"
And then the gates opened and the princess rode trough them, saying one final goodbye to her city.
"Guard" She called "from here on, it is your duty to lead"

Mason nodded at Alleysea’s words. He wasn’t sure if they were directed to him or to the Gatekeeper, but either way, they were true. He kicked his horse forward, passing the guard in front and taking the lead. He trusted Alleysea’s ability to defend herself if necessary, but she was very important to her kingdom, and he didn’t want anything to happen to her.

At the same time, he felt the icy chill of sadness sink into his heart as he contemplated what exactly he was doing in this task. He was to deliver the princess of his kingdom into the hands of a powerful enemy, all on a mere hope that the gesture of submission would convince the more powerful kingdom to leave them alone.

It’s not even a guaranteed deal, he scoffed, knowing that it was a long shot even to do this. He could deliver the princess, wedding her to the enemy, and the Emperor could still decide to destroy his home. It was a distinct possibility, and he needed to watch out for what to do if that was his decision.

All these thoughts passed through the warrior’s head as he rode forward over the still-paved road, which was surrounded by blinding simple beauty in this midday hour. Fields of corn and wheat glowed a brilliant gold and green, reflecting multitudes of sunlight on the simple canvas of the wagon’s tarp.

He glanced back and caught the eye of the guard who was guiding the coach horses forward. He was met with the unfriendly gaze of a malicious man, along with the gentle profiles of the two maidens within.

He immediately pitied the girls, as their fate was assured; if something went wrong with the plan and he had to save Alleysea from the enemy, they were not important enough to risk his own safety, because he would then be responsible for returning the princess to Edetser. Two maidens, as sad as their situation would be, could not stop him from completing that other task.

She rode at his side, not willing to ride behind and reluctant to ride ahead. They crossed a bridge and ahead past shacks and fields of golden wheat. There were cows grazing and sheep bleating in some fields. There were men walking and when they saw the procession they would bow and continue in their way. Some would follow the procession until they reached their destination.
The sky began to darken and Alleysae spoke to the guard.
"It is growing late. I worry for my cousins. They must be tired. There must be a clearing, an inn, or maybe a farm where we can rest. "
She could ride all night if needed, but there were horses with them and her two cousins and she did not want to tire them"
The dirt road was wide and the fields were empty. cattle had been taken to barns and workers had returned home. In the warm twilight they continued to ride. The sun had set but it was the time still where shadows and light still played. The road took them to a small village where two men came singing loudly and staggering about.
" Pray do tell me that from whichever flea ridden tavern you happen to come from, there is also an Inn near by" she called to the jolly men.
The men did their best to bow , but they were so far up the bend that the only thing they managed was a drunken twist of the body.
" Good e'ening my lady, aye ...from the alehouse we got our bodies down the road"
One answered and slurred his words.
"By all mercy you are pissed" She said angrily. They grinned at her.
" foxed we are!...an inn is the tavern, aye, the tavern is an inn"
They went their way singing loudly about love and chivalry and bedding a girl in the summer grass. The princess grunted at that and looked at the guard with a smile on her face.
"this won't change I hope, men happily singing after a day of work...It mustn't change" and she hung on his answer, because for this she was giving herself up. Because her people deserved to be as happy as they had always been.
