Chapter 1
Between Life and Death

"The world is lost, but there is hope. Leave behind the memories you held dear. Rise to see the world for what it could have been, should have been. For the dreams that carry you to this place cry a melancholy tune and you stand here alone with your heart your only friend. Through blind eyes you see, but do not understand. And when everything comes crashing down and despair is all that remains. You will devour the light that sought to save you. But even in your darkest hour, I will believe in you. For you are me and I am you."

1st Trial
The Reflection of Desire

The Reflection of Desire consists of two islands in the middle of the ocean. Everyone starts somewhere on the first island, after waking up from a strange dream. Characters won't remember exactly what they were doing before they went to sleep, but they'll remember bits and pieces. Resources on the island are scarce. There is only one source of freshwater, an algae infested pond, in the middle of the island. Fish and other wildlife are nonexistent.

The second island is farther off, about ten kilometers from the first island, and is surrounded by jagged rocks and fast currents which make it impossible reach to by boat or by swimming. Characters can make out the outline of some sort of vegetation in the distance, but unless they are able to make it to the shore they won't be able to distinguish anything else about it.

There are three sanctuaries on the first island whose description is up to the first person who describes them. The only noticeable thing about sanctuaries is that they are unusual when compared their surroundings and they are spaced far from one another. This may be a formation of rock or a circle of trees.

Each character has to choose a number between one hundred and one thousand for the number that will be shown on their tattoo. Remember, everything you see or do and the people you meet will be incorporated into the main plot. So take into consideration what you describe. You'll never know how important the smallest details will be. And without further adieu, your story begins.

Objectives
Survival: Avoid permanent death.

Things that will cause permanent death
  • Lack of food or water
  • Your character drowns
  • Disease
  • Hypothermia
  • A Random Encounter

(Note: Rebirths do not negate the need for food, water, warmth, or the effects of getting sick. You are reborn as cold, hungry, thirsty, or as sick as you were before you died.)

Special Rules
If a player kills another player they can choose to absorb a portion of the dead player’s soul. Eventually, the portion of the dead player’s soul will return back to them, but it will give the victor a short term benefits. These benefits are:

Food: Absorb whatever the loser had eaten, replenishing one’s need for food. This results in the deceased player being reborn in a “hungry” state. This has no effect if the deceased player hasn’t eaten anything.

Water: Absorbs whatever the loser had drank, replenishing one’s need for water. This results in the deceased player being reborn in a “thirsty” state. This has no effect if the deceased player didn’t drink anything.

Warmth: Absorbs the body warmth of the loser, replenishing one’s need for warmth. This results in the deceased player being reborn in a “cold” state. This has no effect if the deceased player is already cold.

Ability: Allows the victor to use one of the loser’s abilities. This results with the deceased player missing their ability when they are reborn. This lasts until the victor dies or until the he or she comes within close proximity of the newly reborn loser. This has no effect if the deceased player’s ability has already been taken by another player.

(Note: This applies only to players. None of these benefits apply when a person kills an NPC.)

Civor nodded in agreement at the Warren’s suggestion and pointed in to direction he had come from.

“This way,” Civor whispered, breaking into a light jog.

There was sense of urgency in his voice as the darkness oozed over the landscape, quickly approaching their location. It took a moment for Flo to comprehend the danger she was in until she was reminded by her quivering arms that the cold breeze would only get colder once the sun had fully set. If she was freezing now, it was horrifying to think what would happen once the night came and the sun could no longer provide any semblance of heat. It was then surprising that the man who called himself Warren had asked Civor about her wellbeing instead of his own.

His kindness was undeserved, unwanted, and growingly suspicious the more he displayed it. She’d do well to get far away from him as soon as this ordeal was over. Casting aside her insecurities, Flo chased after Civor into the jungle with Warren following close behind. The vegetation thickened as Civor lead them through a tangled mess of overlying vines, fallen logs, and hanging branches. He moved with a nimbleness unbefitting of a man of his stature. As if he were a young teenager instead of the middle aged man that he appeared to be.

It was almost embarrassing, for Flo who was an actual teen, to have trouble keeping up as leaves and branches periodically smacked her in the face. The ominous darkness advancing behind Warren, however, was more than enough incentive to keep her moving forward, despite her clumsy attempt to run without hitting something. Her breathes grew more frantic as she realized the darkness was far faster than she could hope to outrun. She held in her breathe it closed in and then everything went black.

Three lights glowed in the dark, one on her hand, the other through a tear in Warren’s robe, and the last on Civor’s back underneath his overcoat. It was as if world had been reduced to just three little lights traveling through a vast emptiness. The light on Civor’s back turned suddenly to the right and then stopped before the trunk of a fallen tree. Flo ducked, successfully for once, at an incoming branch and stopped right behind him.

Civor pushed against the trunk, lifting it up so that its roots hanged into the air. There was a hole beneath the trunk and he urged both of them to go in. Flo leaped in first, holding her breathe as rocks and dirt flew up into her hair as she fell. There was a loud thud as she hit the floor of a spacious underground room and she moved out of the way as Warren landed after her. She could hear Civor push the trunk back into place from above and there was a brief pause before he too joined them at the bottom.

“Well that wasn’t so bad was it?” chuckled Civor, moving past the two to the other end of the room.

“Big brother is that you?” spoke a young voice.

“Yes, it’s me. I brought friends with me though so be on your best behavior,” replied Civor, lighting a small candle and revealing a young boy laying on a bed made out of palm tree leaves. Flo noticed that the boy’s legs were thinner than the rest of his body. He was crippled. The number 1000 glowed dimly on the boy’s forehead. Civor set a cup made out of a coconut on the boy’s side and beckoned the two to come over.

Flo shivered as she made her way to the two, taking a seat as close as she could by the candle which he had set on the ground. It had been purposely placed where they could all gather around in a circle and Flo could only help but feel a bit annoyed that she was being manipulated, even if he had just probably saved her life. It was still cold underground, but nowhere near the bone chilling levels as it was when she was outside.

“This is my little brother, Simon,” said Civor, ruffling the child’s hair.

The playful move elicited a scowl from the little boy as he swatted the man’s hand from his head. Simon politely nodded as he glanced over to Warren and then to Flo.

“Nice to meet you,” he chirped.

“So what do you want to know about this place?” spoke Civor, taking out a pair of coconuts from a stash he kept hidden behind the wall.

"Oh, I didn't really notice that." Beside the lack of green in the place she was from, it also had little natural wildlife. The most she would see were birds flying overhead or the occasional crow trying to eat garbage. "Now that you mention it, that is pretty strange." Danielle shivered, partly from the cold and partly from the strangeness of the whole situation. The leaves made a slightly eerie scraping sound. She tried her best to ignore it. They continued to retrace their path back to the clearing. In the growing darkness, everything looked the same to her. 'Good thing I'm with someone else, this place confuses me.'

"Um, I know you said earlier that we didn't need tinder, but I don't think that these leaves will keep me warm enough because I get cold really easily. Would it be alright if I cut some dried grass? I saw some on the way here and my knife should do the trick. And maybe we could use some of the stuff you have cut as fuel? " It was nearly all dark now and she couldn't see his face clearly enough to judge his reaction. "Oh! But you probably know more about this than me, so I'll just go with whatever you say." She added this quickly in case she had offended him. 'That would be the last thing I need; stuck in an unknown place all by myself. I'll probably die off the next day.' Her left hand raised to brush some hair away from her eyes, careful not to touch the cut from earlier. 'I wonder if I can use this glow to light our way?'

"That is precisely what I am NOT gonna do. I am going to sit here, and figure our what to do in the morning." Faustus stared at her, his night vision was pretty good, but shit it was dark out. "You are welcome to go, but count me out."

"Coward," Angel teased, "does the darkness scare you that much? I m also sure that this isn't your ordinary night. It could even last forever maybe."

Angel looked at the dim light in the forest again it seemed to be getting dimmer as time passed as if it was moving away from her. "Well, I'll be going on ahead whether you guys follow me or not. There is no point staying here and doing nothing."

"There is a difference between courage and stupidity you know" Ariel said, "What if what your going toward is a trap set by another person? You could accidentally lead Logan and Faustus into a trap."

"Even more the reason I should go ahead and check first." Angel replied.
"Logically this isn't a good idea, but you are not going to change your mind are you?" Ariel said with some exasperation.

Angel nodded with a smile. She walked cautiously toward the fading light; feeling around her for trees and other obstacles. The progression was slow but it did seem to close the distance between her and the light ahead. Then, it suddenly faded abruptly leaving her completely in the dark but then a set of light began glowing in the distance, which looked like two people walking together they seem to be coming closer instead moving away.

In her uncertain trance at the new set of light, her right feet stepped into something wet and slippery causing her to lose her balance. Angel cried out in surprise loud enough to be heard miles away. The rest of her body followed sending her into the water bottom first. The water wasn't too deep but everything on her was wet.

"You better take everything off in this cold, unless you want to get hypothermia." Ariel said unable to hide his anticipation of being in the real world again.

Angel hated the idea of taking off her clothes even if they're wet, but the water was really cold and she shivering again. "Fine" Angel conceded and faded into herself.

Ariel took over then walking easily onto dry land, and stripping off everything. Then, he twisted as much water out of his wet clothing as he can before putting on his boxers. He then sat near the water and flung his half dried jacket over his back covering the numbers. Luckily the air wasn't cold as it would be after sometime, being a humid area otherwise he could be dying of hypothermia already.

"Great idea of wandering in the woods" Ariel said, as he fixed up his blue hair in the shape of an explosion, his dark eyes scanning his surroundings already coming up with an idea of escape or ways of staying alive. The two lights approached him slowly. Instinctively, Ariel crouched low in a nearby bush hiding from whatever was coming toward him with his longsword grasped in both hand. The sword being long was held horizontally across his body, the blade tip resting easily on the ground. "Don't kill them." Angel said, but Ariel just ignored her and cautiously watched the approaching lights.

Warren sat down near the candle, hoping that it would last as long as the dark night outside. Warren and Flo were asked what they wanted to know about this place and almost directly after Civor had finished speaking Warren spoke up. "There are so many questions to ask, but I think that its bes to start off with the question, what do you know about these tatoos? Everyone I saw had them and for some reason it lit up in this blue-ish color." Warren rolls up his sleeve, just a bit higher as the wrist you could see the number in a flame style, but as he rolled the sleeve further up you could see that the rest of his forearm was covered in a glowing tribal tatoo. "That tribal tatoo was there already, but it didn't glow like that. The number is something that I don't remember being there."

The blue-ish glowing tatoo's and the small flame that danced on the candle gave the entire room something that reminded Warren about the church that he once visited, he relived the entire situation: A large group of poeple were waiting outside of the church doors, just silently waiting for the huge doors to open. The door opened and the mass of poeple swarmed into the church, the massive glass in lead windows cast light into the entire church. Then just before the the priest made his way to the plateau in front the huge bells in the clock tower played their harmonious music. Suddenly Warren found himself back in reality, completly unmoved, but with another burning question: "I remember hearing a bell, just before I woke up here and I know that I never could have come here on my own. How is that possible? I climb buildings, or I used to climb buildings that are so unstable that you wonder how they build them, and it seemed logical to me that they were there. But this, I realy don't understand it." That was a combination of words that he had never used together before.

Masi sighed softly as he looked at her and shook his head. "Did you not seek out the promised land? If you are to travel, you must come prepared. I am afraid that i will be of little help in starting a fire, not that i even want to start a fire. Darkness is perfectly fine with me for tonight. Fire is both a blessing and a curse." Placing the banana leaves back into the clearing, he quickly arranged them in such a way that they made a very uncomfortable bed. 4 leaves for each person.

"If you can get a fire started, go right ahead and use what i've chopped for fuel. If you wish to waste your energy cutting grass in this light, then who am i to judge?" He sighed, placing the last leave to cover what he had chopped, and then taking nearby rocks to press the leaf down so that they will not be blown away by the wind.

Masi would then walk to the girl and taking the stone bow from his back, he offered it to her. "If you are going to start the fire using the old string method, then you can lend my bow." he stared at her harshly for the next sentence. "You will not, and absolutely not smash my bow against other rocks to create sparks."

Waiting for a moment to see if she would take it or not, Masi would then sit on the banana leaves, dusting off the banana stalk that he had dropped earlier and feasting upon one. "Damn it, sour as hell." he said softly to himself as his cheeks scrunched up.

Watching the girl was not entertaining in the slightest, Masi thought to himself as he closed his eyes to rest. Sure she was shapely, but she had no assets, and her mostly futile efforts to start a fire did little to impress him. Not only that, it was starting to get dark and he did not want to watch the sunset. His parents used to say that watching the sunset would ruin his eyes and while he doubted it, he did not want to test out that particular information. Therefore, he was astounded as he heard her shout in triumph. He quickly opened his eyes to look at the direction of the girl's voice and sure enough, a small glow of a fire was held in her cupped hands. Only then did he noticed her tattoo glow, or more particularly, how strong the glow was. It was the second brightest light next to the flame and as they were in a clearing, it stood out here more then a white flower in a wasteland. His curious thoughts quickly went to his own tattoo and while they glowed, it was a faint blue that only served to illuminate the number on his arm. It would be easy to hide, Masi thought to himself with a relieved smile and turned back to the girl. Although he spotted no wildlife, he was sure that at least some existed, and the dim glow would make his presence to them less obvious, resulting in an easier hunt.

"I'm impressed, but more importantly, I'm confounded on how you just started that fire. Perhaps.... plants burn more easily here." he laid, laying down on the piles of leaves while his mental voice screeched at him.
How was she able to create a fire? Where did she get that stick? How did she force the stick into the grass pile without something to push the stick from the top? Why would she need to place a fruit over a fire to eat it? Silly questions and theories appeared in his head, and he laughed loudly at the mental image of the girl taking out a wand and pointing it to the grass to make it burn.

"Glowing tattoos, night sky, And here I'm still thinking that normal logic works! I wouldn't be surprised if a dragon from the old comes flying above us, with his flame breath creating a sun in the distance." A simple quip, but he carefully observed her reactions. Seeing nothing however, Masi shrugged to himself and decided to trash the theory. No point in being silly. Certainly there are rules, just not in the most logical sense.
Turning one of the banana leaves into a make shift blanket, he propped his head on his arms and laid on more leaves to get some sleep. He had ate before this entire journey, but three hours of walking around would tire someone out and he needed his rest more then food right now. He was calm about his tattoo, knowing that the banana leaf over him would hide it from any observers, but did that matter when they both were illuminated by her impromptu campfire?

"Be careful that you do not start a bush fire." he spoke after a moment's rest. "I'm going back to sleep. Wake me up when you are about to sleep. Basic survival technique. Perhaps I'm being paranoid, but i can't help but feel that this land is not looking for our best interest."

"Hello, darkness, my old friend." Faustus quietly growled to himself under his breath as he remained crouched in the pitch black night. This place just kept getting wierder and wierder. This was the first time though, that a wierd occurence had brought a feeling of comfort to him. This unnatural darkness was calming, like the embrace of a loving parent....He brought a hand up to his face for a second as his mother flashed in his memory. His arm was tingling, like the way your hand feels when it fell asleep and the nerves are turning back on. It started as soon as it got dark. He had no explanation for it, but he couldn't just ignore it. It felt like his body was trying to tell him something, it was excited.

Logan couldn't see it, but Faust was staring right at him, he knew his general direction from the glow of the tattoo. His own glowing on the back of his calf, only visible because his pant legs were rolled up. Speaking of which it was slightly cold out here, he should roll them down right now. He stood up as Logan spoke up finally about the darkness. Faust let out a slow long entertained laugh. He rolled down his black jeans, covering the the glow completely, he was now nothing more than a shadow in the night. "You scared, little Logan?" He growled threateningly.

He had always had great night vision, but there really was nothing to get much light to his human eyes. So he closed them. The tingle spread from his arm to his entire torso. What was this tingle? He felt full of energy, the darkness giving him a sort of edge. He had always felt safer at night on the wastes. Sneaking through the shadows to steal, or fight. He could take the pain of getting too close and drag them into the darkness where he didn't need to see.

He began to walk around slowly in measured steps, taking into account his memory of the area from before the darkness. He was plotting the area. He wanted to know where he was at all times even though he couldn't see. He walked slowly from tree to tree, making a circle of sorts that would be his area. Call him paranoid, but this was a ritual that he had performed many times back in the wastes.

He was getting the hang of the area, he wasn't one hundred percent by a long shot, but if needed he could move slightly quickly, safely.
A loud whacking noise could be heard in the distance. it wasn't too far off, but it could also be the darkness playing tricks. on his mind. It continued for a couple minutes before stopping completely...the silence was more creepy then the wierd noise. His prayers were answered when he heard a loud crashing and cracking. He crouched low to the ground again, his fists clenched tightly, he had his big stick in his hand, ready to smash a skull or two in. Logan had better keep his cool, or he would wind up bloody. He chuckled outloud as he thought of it.

The lights stopped moving far off in the distance and Ariel relaxed and sheathed his sword. The lights seem to settle there for a moment before a reddish glow began to appear. It took Ariel only milliseconds to noticed that two people managed to start a fire. It was inconceivable at first, starting a fire in such a humid place. The lights still glowed almost as bright as the fire. Ariel shuffled toward the fire making sure not to make a sound. He picked up a broken dry branch as he approach. The approach wasn't too difficult since this part of the jungle wasn't as dense as before.

When he got closer, the area around him seem to get brighter. He looked around the surrounding areas for a place where he could get closer and remain undetected. He walked in a large circle around the fire until he found that spot. He eased behind the tree and observed the people who started the fire one was sleeping and the other wide awake tending the fire.

Ariel jumped out of hind sword pointed at the awake person with a threating red glow in his eyes. A female met him and stopped him in his spot for a moment. He then eased toward the camp fire, placed the dry branch into the fire until it lit and proceeded to head back casually into the forest as nothing happened.
