Chapter 1
Between Life and Death

"The world is lost, but there is hope. Leave behind the memories you held dear. Rise to see the world for what it could have been, should have been. For the dreams that carry you to this place cry a melancholy tune and you stand here alone with your heart your only friend. Through blind eyes you see, but do not understand. And when everything comes crashing down and despair is all that remains. You will devour the light that sought to save you. But even in your darkest hour, I will believe in you. For you are me and I am you."

1st Trial
The Reflection of Desire

The Reflection of Desire consists of two islands in the middle of the ocean. Everyone starts somewhere on the first island, after waking up from a strange dream. Characters won't remember exactly what they were doing before they went to sleep, but they'll remember bits and pieces. Resources on the island are scarce. There is only one source of freshwater, an algae infested pond, in the middle of the island. Fish and other wildlife are nonexistent.

The second island is farther off, about ten kilometers from the first island, and is surrounded by jagged rocks and fast currents which make it impossible reach to by boat or by swimming. Characters can make out the outline of some sort of vegetation in the distance, but unless they are able to make it to the shore they won't be able to distinguish anything else about it.

There are three sanctuaries on the first island whose description is up to the first person who describes them. The only noticeable thing about sanctuaries is that they are unusual when compared their surroundings and they are spaced far from one another. This may be a formation of rock or a circle of trees.

Each character has to choose a number between one hundred and one thousand for the number that will be shown on their tattoo. Remember, everything you see or do and the people you meet will be incorporated into the main plot. So take into consideration what you describe. You'll never know how important the smallest details will be. And without further adieu, your story begins.

Objectives
Survival: Avoid permanent death.

Things that will cause permanent death
  • Lack of food or water
  • Your character drowns
  • Disease
  • Hypothermia
  • A Random Encounter

(Note: Rebirths do not negate the need for food, water, warmth, or the effects of getting sick. You are reborn as cold, hungry, thirsty, or as sick as you were before you died.)

Special Rules
If a player kills another player they can choose to absorb a portion of the dead player’s soul. Eventually, the portion of the dead player’s soul will return back to them, but it will give the victor a short term benefits. These benefits are:

Food: Absorb whatever the loser had eaten, replenishing one’s need for food. This results in the deceased player being reborn in a “hungry” state. This has no effect if the deceased player hasn’t eaten anything.

Water: Absorbs whatever the loser had drank, replenishing one’s need for water. This results in the deceased player being reborn in a “thirsty” state. This has no effect if the deceased player didn’t drink anything.

Warmth: Absorbs the body warmth of the loser, replenishing one’s need for warmth. This results in the deceased player being reborn in a “cold” state. This has no effect if the deceased player is already cold.

Ability: Allows the victor to use one of the loser’s abilities. This results with the deceased player missing their ability when they are reborn. This lasts until the victor dies or until the he or she comes within close proximity of the newly reborn loser. This has no effect if the deceased player’s ability has already been taken by another player.

(Note: This applies only to players. None of these benefits apply when a person kills an NPC.)

(OOC: anyone nearby can join in here I think, but just to clarify that the creature is non-aggressive and will only attack if you attack it first. If you attack it expect it to be swift and dangerous as wolf with the addition of horns, a spiked tail, and sharp claws XD)

"I have an idea. We can take some of the leaves from these trees and make a basket of sorts, with a rope that reaches up to me. That way, you wont have to worry about carrying those things up here, and if need be, I can throw you the rope." Logan said

"We could try making baskets, but what are we going to use to bind them together?" Angel said as she looked at Logan who didn't seem to be carrying any synthetic ropes at the moment. Angel considered telling him that but thought otherwise.

"Here," Angel said as she took off her partially dry jacket and handed it to Logan. She was still wearing a light blue t-shirt underneath though slightly wet. "Put as many coconuts as you can in this, I'll into the jungle quickly and see if I can get some vines to ties things up and then gather the rest of the coconuts."

Angel promptly head into the jungle, it seemed like early afternoon so she was able to see almost clearly inside the jungle. She made sure that she didn't go too far into the jungle and had a clear view of the way she came in. To make sure there was a way back she used Ariel's longsword to hack a path through the think jungle. Flies and other bugs flew around her as she hacked away. Accidentally, she felt her sword collide with something solid, almost fleshy.

The response was instantaneous as a roar of pain that almost rocked the trees nearby. A creature turned and faced her, its red raptor-like eyes stared at her menacingly. Though it would have looked more menacing if its teeth weren't shaped like those of a herbivore's nonetheless there were two teethes near the middle that were in the shaped like fangs. But still the three sharp horns on the top of its head was tipped with dried blood. The horns were pointed out in the shape of a fan, the one in the middle being the longest, and the ones on each side about the same length but shorter. Out of instinct the creature charged at Angel revealing the rest of it body which looked like a medium dog with shaggy loose fur and a furry long tail that almost touched the ground. At the end of the tail was something that looked like a small spiked ball. It would have looked adoring if not for the horns and the spiked tail-ball. A shallow cut can be seen near the creatures smooth back.

"Kill it." Ariel said.
"I can't it looked just a like a dog," Angel said in protest, "One of those um what do you call them..."
" Mutated dogs that tear your guts out and eat it savoring every bite?" Ariel finished.
"No, of course not, look at its teeth those aren't meant for eating meat." Angel said.

Angel wanted to continue the inner argument but the creature was readying for a leap at her head with its sharp horns. Angel ducked under it barely avoiding the horn on the right side of it head. The creature cleverly landed behind her blocking her way out. It stood with the sole of its feet firmly on the ground and bared its fangs at her intending to take its revenge for what she accidentally did. Claws seemed to dig into the soft soil as the creature stood its ground. Angel looked behind her but only saw an endless tangle of jungle trees and low green brushes.

"Now are you going to kill it?" Ariel said.
"No," Angel said stubbornly, "It isn't making another attack, I ll think of someway." and waited for the creature to make its move.

Warren listened to Felix as he introduced himself. Then the question came up what to next, Warren in fact hadn't thought out that far, he hadn't even considered making a shelter. "To be honset, I don't have the slightest idea. But if we are to make a shelter, we need to have the right materials like: Bamboo would be great for the frame, palm leaves as a roof and something that can be used as a rope. All of this, exept the leaves, require that we go into the jungle there."

Suddenly Warren heard a roar come from the jungle. "Lets keep away from that, whatever it is." Warren looked around once more, to his far to his left he could see the island, but it seemed to lie paralel to the waterline on the beach now. "At the very least we need to return here, as there are plenty of palm trees here and at least in the desert the warmest places around nighttime were near large volumes of water and that is most definatly a large volume."

Warren waited for Felix to eat his coconuts, then stood up and walked towards the edge of the jungle. There he waited for Felix to come before he grabbed his grappeling hook again and entered the jungle. As he walked through the first layer of small palm trees and other human high bush he noticed that there was a large ridge of porous rock in their path, they had to get over the ridge to get from the beach it seemed. Warren stoped near the ridge and directly it was clear that his hook once more had no use, if they used it to grab the ledge, the ledge would simply crumble and you'd have a grappeling hook falling down on their heads.

Then he realised that the ridge wasn't too high fro him to run up to, if he had enough momentum. "watch out, I'll try to run up that ridge. So get back a bit, there might be some rocks that come loose and fall down." Warren walked a few meters back and then sprinted to the ridge, he set his foot on the ridge and jumped from that foot. He landed with his arms on top of the ridge and pulled himself up. Then as he still lied down he turned over the edge and stuck out his hand. "Now its your turn to get up here."

Masi traveled thru the thick underbrush of the forest with wariness. The journey was rough going, and he took about 2 hours of walking before noticing something. The scenery here is different from the ones in the beach. Trees with ticker trunks can be spotted, and he noticed small groups of bananas growing here or there. The sight eased him, as he knew that there were food to eat for now, and he did not felt hungry. They were small, and they were green, an obvious sign that they were unripe, but Masi did not know that. To him, the bananas looked as good as any iguana on a stick.

Still, it's best to be safe, and drawing an arrow, he aimed up into the trees, cutting the stalk where the bananas grew, dropping the entire bunch to the floor.
He smiled, hefting them onto his shoulders. "Lunch and dinner." he whispered. The promised land was promising indeed! He looked at where his arrow had went, and was surprised to see it still stuck to the tree, the wooden body of the arrow sticking out like a sore thumb. He frowned and cursed at his carelessness. He only has 19 arrows left.

In good spirits, he traveled out, and suddenly, an odd clearing attracted his eyes. There were no trees, not even an underbrush at the site. His alertness instantly grew as he spotted a dreaded symbol.Etched onto the clearing with visible clarity, small rocks formed a large symbol on the ground, the symbol of a square, with a triangle inside of it. Wary, Masi approached the symbol, and the rocks glowed once, before fading out.
"What matter is this?" he asked, but got no reply instead. Thinking to himself, he thought of the spot as cursed, and he shook his head, leaving it alone.

From the distance, a roar could be heard, and Masi froze in his tracks. That sounded extremely dangerous... The sun is obviously not setting anytime soon.... but which choice would be better, to make a camp at the cursed symbol, or to explore the land?
He frowned and sighed. Cursed symbol it is, though he will be damned if he is to sleep on it. Throwing the bunch of bananas onto the ground, he would start clearing away at a part of the underbrush near the circle, using his skinning knife to cut the plants, throwing the vegetation to the side. The night would be cold, the plants would make great ingredients for a fire.

Alexandria smiled when the man spoke, he had manners, that much was noticeable as he spoke, especially with all the ma'am stuff. "It's nice to see other people are polite still, I remember talking to this old man who had made a shop his home. He wasn't polite at all." She said before putting that heavy bag she was wearing down by the tree. "We will not need a supply of fresh water just yet if we partner up, I gathered together all this water for some reason, I think it might have all come from the shop that old man lived in."

She then realised he mentioned something about her that she hadn't noticed. "What numbers are there? Because there might be some kind of meaning to them." Alexandria looked back at him when she asked him this, curious and slightly worried about what might happen.

Staying here at this algae pond was useless, he needed to find something else, maybe some supplies to make a shelter of sorts as the night drew on. If this place was anything like the wastes, it was probably gonna get cold, and with that water? yeah cold. He would need to make a fire...without his fire making supplies...that had been stolen...he grunted again and cursed to himself. He was probably never gonna forgive himself anytime soon for such a dumbass mistake. It was time to step it up, He wasn't going to be getting water from that pond anytime soon, and he wasn't dieing from thirst yet, so it was time to think of other priorities.

He jumped to his feet and brushed himself off as he looked around the clearing to decide where to start walking. He twirled slowly as he looked to the sky, finally looking down and deciding on a direction. "Looks like Im going this way." He said to himself as he started walking. Agenda, find possible food...problems? He grew up in the wastes, he had never seen a plant besides the occasional dead tree, or grass. None of these plants looked familiar at all. He wouldn't even know where to start! His best hope would be to find someone else who had some knowledge. His fist clenched as he thought about meeting others, he always had bad experiences with others. He was ready to defend himself on a moments notice, but he'd rather not have to kill someone, even if he was itching for a fight, as he usually was when ever he was hungry.

He had been walking for quite awhile, The most he had gathered was a very sturdy stick that was half his height and about 3 inches thick. It was best to have something rather than nothing. whether to defend himself, or poke things that he was unsure of. He had also gathered about fifteen giant leaves and tied them around his back with fibers he had woven together from other leaves. not too sturdy, but a quick fix. He knew that they could be useful later. This was more of an exploratory mission than anything. He didn't know what any of these plants were after all.

A roar shook the trees around him. He jumped and got the stick up to a ready position, he had a face of grim concentration his heart was beating a bit faster. That was extremely close. It was somewhere in front of him. HE should probably, if he was smart, go the other way, but where was the fun in that. He had a friggin STICK after all! He could take on anything. He smiled to himself at his stupid joke and marched forward slowly. As he got through the the underbrush he slowly was able to see what had caused the noise.

Wtf? what was that thing? it looked like a large dog, but was covered in spikes, it was facing someone, with a fullfledged sword. The first person he finds has a weapon like that. of course. And what did he have? a stick and some leaves. The real threat right now was this monstrosity in front of him. His heart was beating fast, but not out of control. His bloody red orbs moved from the dog to the person, who was dirctly in front of him, they were surrounding the beast. What was the best plan right here. There was a sturdy tree next to him he could scamper up if things went sour. he had tested climbing these trees earlier. He was confident in his ability to get out of the way. "You there, what have you gotten yourself into?" His voice was a harsh voice, a low gruffy voice.

A person holding a study stick dash out of the forest surprising both Angel and the creature in front of her.
"You there, what have you gotten yourself into?" The person said in a harsh low gruffy voice.
"I don't know this is pure coincidence." Angel replied but her actions indicated that she didn't want to continue the conversation.
The creature looked observantly at new arrival and back at its target. It gave threatening hiss before escaping into the forest.

When Angel was certain that the creature had fled, Angel sheathed her long sword and turned to the stranger behind her.
"I'm very grateful for your help," She said, "I had no idea what would have happened if you hadn't appeared."
What she didn't sound very realistic but she still managed to get out of the situation with minimal injuries.
"Thank you for your help," Angel said to the stranger, "My name is Angel who might you be?"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(OOC: I’ll be using one of the NPCs)
The creature dashed through the jungle in with a good idea where it was heading. It had news to announce to its master. It was making good time calm weaving through the dangers in the jungle. But to reach its destination it had to dive through several trees whose thorny vines reached for its prey. In about what seemed like minutes the creature found its owner. She had tanned smooth skin and dark brown eyes, her hair was auburn yellow and tied in knot behind her head. She was tall for a female; a bit over 6 feet. She wore fur bands around her wrists. She was scantily dressed; almost looking like an Amazoness. She wore shingaurds and armguards made of a unqiue glowing wood she also had ball like objects clipped on her waiste she probably had other weapons but they’re hidden from sight.

The creature bounded up at its master and the female caught the creature with flourishing motion and whirling it around a bit to welcome it back. The creature nuzzled contently against her while at the same time letting out a unique pattern of barks and growls
“You were hurt somewhere?” the person asked. She felt the creature nod. She touched the creature where it was cut and the wound mended instantly. Anger flickered temporay in her as the creature descibed the peron who did it but then the anger faded into a mischevious grin and said "Lets go and give them a warm welcome."

The number 4 can be seen just above her bare left shoulder as she walked into her straw hut and started preparing a surprise for the people who hurt her precious pet.

((OOC: Well, I cant even find my first post to remember what his number was.))

His sudden appearence had served to spook the beast. Phew, that was one threat down, now to turn his sights on the next one. This person had sheathed their sword, and turned to face him, thanking him and introducing herself as Angel. He had lowered his stick, but his grip was still tight as if he was ready to knock her head right off at the first sign of danger to himself. His bloody red orbs jumped to her white hair for a second, she was the first person besides himself he had seen with white hair. Not too important, but he was an observant fellow. He had remained quiet, sizing her up as he stared down at her. "Faustus," He said finally.

He didn't really notice it now, but the number 435 on the back of his calf was glowing blue from his proximity to Angel, but he of course didn't know this either.

As soon as he had answered her, the sound of someone rushing towards them alerted him, he tensed up visibly, his grip tightened. He wanted to look directly at the direction of the noise, but that would've left a blind spot where the girl was, so he backed up slowly so she was more in front of him. A shorter male burst onto the scene, rushing past them. Faust raised an eyebrow as the male turned back, he had over shot them, understandable, it wasn't completely easy to see in here. There was worry in his face as he approached, mentioning the rorar he had heard as well, asking if she was ok before turning on him, introducing himself. Faust had backed up again, giving himself enough room to be ready for anything. The shorter man stuck out his hand to shake as he introduced himself as, Logan. Faust stared for a second at him not even acknowledging the hand as he did so. He then transfered the stick to his other hand so he could shake the man's hand firmly, "I'm Faustus." He let go quickly and retracted his hand.

Growing up in the wastes had taught him one thing, be wary. His lack of supplies was a perfect example of why. Now while these two seemed friendly, he wasn't letting down his guard. But he wasn't one to totally burn bridges, perhaps they knew more about survival here. A smile finally cracked on Faust's lips, his elongated canines making this large man look more creepy than trying to be friendly, hey he was rusty at being friendly alright? "Forgive me if I seem to be tense, I have learned not to trust people quickly," He spoke slowly and directly, slightly unaware that it sounded more like a threat than an apology.

She noticed that the newcomer was moving father behind her as if he was planning to attack. Her hand tensed around the hilt of her sword but she knew that if she were to fight another person, she would be unwilling to attack that person with it. Angel was relieved that Logan came in, the stranger cautiously introduced himself as Faustus. There was a right for everyone in the group to be cautious. They just barely met each other, but a warm feeling which emanated from her lower back told her somehow that they're meant to meet each other. The companionship was welcoming (driving Ariel into a deeper retreat) but an urgent thought came to mind.

"How much food did we all have?" Angel asked Logan and Faustus. She knew that with three people their current food supply (the coconuts they found at the beach) which could have lasted them for larger half of the week will be reduced to a few day. There was also the problem of a clean water supply, and a shelter for rainy days and cold evenings.

" Don't worry too much " Ariel said, " Considering the number of people we already met there probably several other people here on the island as well. we could always take from them when we deem necessary."

"I don't want to resort to that" Ariel objected, "That makes securing resources more important because of competition."

Angel noticed then that everyone else would be thinking of the same thing. It could concluded that the first few days would be peaceful but then near the end of the week it would be chaotic. Angel mentally prepared for the worst even though Ariel could handle all that when the times comes. Can survival not be obtained without bloodshed? If she could somehow gather other groups together and have then decided on some kind of peace treaty maybe fighting could be avoided. For now securing as much essentials as possible is the top priority.

“Flo,” spoke a voice. A shadow loomed over a scrawny young girl sprawled on the floor of a pitch black room. It extended its hand towards her to show that it meant no harm.

“Flo, it’s been a long time.”

“W-Who are you?” stammered the young girl. Something wasn’t right about this place. She wasn’t suppose to be here.

“Don’t you remember me? My dear Flo? Should I play a song for you?”

The shadow raised his hands as if he was about to play an imaginary flute, but there was no music behind his breathe, only an eerie silence. She took a step back, unsure of what to make of the peculiar performance. The floor beneath her feet collapsed and Flo gave out a brief yelp as she fell down into the endless abyss. The shadow looked down as she fell. It was saying something, but it was too far away to hear. Darkness continued to rise all around her and then everything went black.

Flo stirred from her slumber as the sun shined over the black mess that was her hair. There was something soft between her fingers and when she opened her eyes she could hardly believe what she saw. Plants. Luscious, vivid, and alive just like she had seen in the old photographs. She rubbed her eyes in case this was some sort of joke. No, they were really real. She held a leaf in her hand and moved her fingers across the moist smooth texture. Surreal.

She noticed a strange number on her palm as she touched the leaf. “One-hundred?” she whispered to herself. “I wonder what that means.”

Flo stood up and took a look around her new surroundings. It was a lush forest with speckles of light shining through the gaps between the trees. It was as if everything was a dream. Like the stories about the bell….And then slow realization that she was alone hit her. Where was mother? Brother? Her eyes dashed left and right, but they were no were to be found. No! She ran through the jungle to the next tree and then the next. Not here or here or there. A horrible feeling began to well up in her chest. Had she abandoned them? How did this happen? She swore she’d never reach paradise without them. Flo spotted a pond in the distance. Maybe they had stopped there for a drink? It was a faint hope, but it was worth a try.

As Flo began to make her way to the water’s edge the number on her hand started to glow. She was not alone.

"Aye, it's been a while, has'n'it?" Asked the Irishman. His hazel/brown mixed eyes glanced around the jungle clearing,

"Water and all that, you know. Precious stuff it is. Now it's everywhere and I don't even like looking at it." He complained to nobody in particular as he made his way through the lush jungle. The sounds and fragrances suprised him. The vibrant colors surpised him. Even the moist dirt surprised him. He bent down to clutch a bit in his left hand while his right held the Blacksmith's hammer loosely. It had been a day since he woke up on the Southern side of the island in an odd area he could only describe as a sanctuary.

Opening his eyes and peering out across the open water, he was astounded at first, and then frightened when he suspected he was dead. After a few hours, his stomach felt like it was eating itself inside out and he realized he wasn't in heaven, and was in fact alive. Faolan had never actually seen the ocean, only heard about it. He had gathered up some rocks and coconuts along with some citrus fruits he didn't recognize, but watched monkies eating before trying them himself. They were a cross between lemons and oranges and had a harder shell that couldn't be eaten. After eating the coconuts he began wandering into the jungle, because he needed water that was drinkable.

It wasn't until he reached the first stream of water that he noticed the number on his left shoulder, '742'. It was an odd print, blocky and neat. Unlike any tattoo he'd ever seen. He wasn't sure where he got it, but it made him feel like he was part of some big test, and he was the lab rat. This caused him some concern and consulted his new council: A coconut with a face carved in it and strands of 'hair' on the top. He consulted the coconut and it told him to gather water and move on. Nothing important to see here. He called it a communist and kept going, deeper into the jungle with his hammer always at the ready. He heard some roaring noises and something he never expected to hear in a long time: voices. They were shouting and loud, and he began running toward them. By the time he arrived at the source, there were only tracks of who had once been there left. He used what little knowledge he could, and a bit of common sense to discern the large animal tracks from the human ones. He followed the human ones a little ways, cautious and slow.

Suddenly Warren was distracted by something that rushed through the jungle bushes, in Warrens direction. Soon he saw what or rather who had made all that noise. A girl could be seen through the bushes, but to Warren it wasn't clear why she had ran to that particular direction. He wispered to Felix: "On second thought, why don't you go to the beach and gather some coconuts and if possible also a load of those palm leaves. I'll scout the area." Warren rolled away from the edge and just in time it seemed, as the rock began to crumble on the place where he just had layed down to get Felix up, maybe he had damaged the rock when he had ran up to it and held it together with his weight afterwards.

Warren stood up and then it was clear why she had ran to that direction, as he saw the algea infested pond. Thinking that the girl probably wanted to drink from the water he rushed to the pond, blocking her path to the pond. "This pond is infested with algea and on top of it the water is stagnant, thus drinking this water can kill you." Warren still held his grappling hook ready to strike, if he had learned anything in the desert, then it was not to lower your guard when your out on the road. Warren also kept in mind that there were more poeple on this island than just the of them, Warren looked down to see how much rope he had to lounge when he noticed his tatoo glow, through the robe. Then he noticed that it wasn't just the number that glowed, his whole forearm was covered in a tribal glow. "What the hell! Did I accidently step into radioactive waste?"

It was quite a curious sound, Masi thought to himself as he heard someone cry out in the forest. There was a bunch of thick vegetation, far in front of him, which proceeded to thin out, forming a kind of a sign, that further highlighted the oddity of the symbol on the floor.

"A sword, a butcher knife?" he chuckled to himself as he stood. A sword will work, but a butcher knife would be almost completely ineffective against the enemy that they call, high bush.

Stopping his work of making a clearing next to the clearing, he kept his skinning knife back, and he walked towards the source of the cry. The sun was hot, and he now fully realized how much he had sweated, even though he wore a fisherman's cap.

"Head this way! There's a clearing over here!" he called out to the unknown female in the high bush. Unnoticed, the number 312 on his left arm began to glow as well.

Who was this boy? Talking so smoothly, what was he expecting? For them to sit around the campfire and go in a circle reciting their life stories? Faust's eyes narrowed for a moment before he loosened his grip on his stick. If he was going to be stuck around them he didn't want them to think he would attack at any moment, which he would if that was the best way to go about surviving. He didn't like the idea of sticking around these two just as much, but if he had to he couldn't have them thinking he was a ticking time bomb.A creepy smile slid onto his face as he relaxed his stance. The flat girl, had asked about how much food they had, wit hthe male responding with the supplies they gathered were somewhere else.

All Faust had managed to gather so far were the giant leaves on his back that were held in place by a small rope woven from leaf fibers. Nothing strong, it was just so he didnt have to hold onto the leaves. His little expedition was an exploratory one. "I have found nothing yet," He answered gruffly. "I have never seen a plant besides grass, I have no idea what any of this shit is, let alone what to eat." He let his smile subside as the feeling of annoyance of his sudden situation switch was welled up inside him. "That dog, thing, was the first animal I have seen as well." Well wasn't he being mister helpful, a regular shining light in the darkness that was there survival.

Maybe he should provide some more useful information. He pointed behind him, "I found a pond a ways back...but good luck drinking from it without dying or getting sick. If there is one thing I have learned from the wastes, don't even think about drinking water that has been sitting there if you can't boil it." His brow furrowed in anger as the other day came back to him, "And wouldn't you know I had my supplies, that contained pots, stolen the other day." So all in all he had still not provided anything useful besides his little warning.

He shook his head, if this was the wastes, he wouldn't need these fuckers, he could find his own damn food and his own water. He put his hand in his face before peering back up. "Your best bet is to collect dew in the morning, run your shirt over as many plants and grass as you can to soak up water, that and roots." He stared at them for a second, "unless you have a better Idea." He put on his best fake smile, which looked way more ferocious than it shouldve.

Hearing the voice through the thick vegetation, Danielle cheered up a lot more. 'Thank goodness! I'm not imagining things after all.' Using her hands to carefully brush apart the branches and vines, she found that she could avoid tripping more easily if she slowed down and actually took the time to choose where she stepped.

After a short while, the vegetation finally thinned and she stepped into what seemed like a messy clearing. The plants showed clear signs of being just cut and some were still oozing out sap. Beyond that was another older looking clearing. 'How odd, there isn't even grass growing on it.' Her brow furrowed as she spotted an odd symbol on the ground. Seeing it gave her a chill and she gave a small shiver. It was soon forgotten when she saw the other person. Craning her head a bit to look a him, she gave him a shy smile and waved with her right hand. The number on the left arm glowed brighter, not that she noticed of course. "Um, hi. My name is Danielle." She paused, not knowing what else to say. Her stomach growled, reminding her that she hadn't eaten since she got up, however many hours that was. "Um, do you know how to start a fire?" Her smile turned sheepish.

"I gathered everything I could. It's back there, on top of the hill" Logan said.
"Thanks a lot." Angel said

"I found a pond a ways back...but good luck drinking from it without dying or getting sick. If there is one thing I have learned from the wastes, don't even think about drinking water that has been sitting there if you can't boil it." The person named Faustus said. He sounded trustworthy almost casual, only if he didn't put on an awkward smile at the end,

"Do you think we can trust him?" Ariel said yet again.
"He is in the same situation as us" Angel replied, "there is no harm in being too cautious especially when one's survival is top priority in this place"

"Can you take us to the pond? If we can filter it somehow we would have a abundant source of water" Angel asked politely, "But before that I need to collect the things that Logan gathered."

Angel proceeded to exit the forest the way she came in and looked for the jacket that Logan left on the hill it was there but it was open and laid bare for anyone to claim. Angel approached it and found only 9 coconuts in it. All the nearby trees seem to have lost their coconuts as well. It took her only a few moments to notice that someone stole their food supply.

"Lets go kill that bastard who stole our food" Ariel suggested with anger.
"Not a good idea right now, but can be considerable later" Angel replied, "We need to meet up with other people first. Nine coconuts should be enough for at least one day. Nonetheless, we need to be more careful with our supplies from now on. Also, there might be more food supplies on the other side of the island."

Angel looked at the area around the hill and looked for any traces of intrusion before tying up the jacket with the coconuts, slugging it over her right shoulder and head back into the forest to regroup with Logan and Faustus. They're were still present when she got there; Faustus as cautious as usual but cooperative. Sometime she wish she could ease the mood a bit somehow.

Bushes, insects, plants, trees, and flowers rushed passed, blurred into a kaleidoscope of color as Faolan raced down the path. Every now and then he had to duck below, or jump above a branch that strayed into his way. occasionally, he swat at an animal and keep going, barely breaking stride. The blue sky above, the vegetation below, all of it was nothing to his tunnel-visioned mind, purely focused on finding people.
People! Yes, people! Can there really be people?
The Irishman burst out of some bushes and came to a small clearing that led to - A LAKE! Fresh water... He could scarcely believe it, and immediately rushed toward it. At first it seemed like things were coming together for the first time in days, or maybe weeks?

"Hours, even?"

" 'Course not ya Coconut-brained badger. It was days, the sun's been up and down a few times." Replied Faolan to the intruding voice of Gererd MacDougal, his cocnut-council member that was currently dangling from his waist. A few more meters to the pond, and something bright began glowing on his shoulder. A loud yelp erupted from his throat involuntarily, and he tripped, rolling forward and landing on his face in the underbrush.
"I'M ON FIRE! " Roared the confused man, clutching at this shoulder and trying to put this fire out. It was only after his mind calmed, and he realized he wasn't on fire at all, but the new tattoo on his shoulder was glowing.
Or have I lost it again? No no.. Definitely glowing tattoo of doom.
He reasoned with himself for a few more minutes, deliberating his course of action now before noticing the water again,

"Water! Oh thank the flowing energies that be!" He shouted and rushed toward the pond. No doubt anyone nearby would notice the tattered, dusty trenchcoat and leather pants, tan hiking boots, wild face, and flailing arms as he rushed toward the body of water.

Chapter 2
The Blackest of Nights

Flo flinched at the sound of the stranger’s voice, taken aback by the suddenness of his appearance and her own negligence that there might be others out in the jungle. He appeared right behind her, through the thick greenery, carrying a grappling hook. A mysterious number glowed between a tear in his robe and there was an etching fear that he would lash out at her with his weapon so readily in hand. A cautious glare, however, said otherwise.

Flo backed away from the man not bothering to answer his kind, or what seemed to be kind, intentions. Her eyes darted left and right, searching for possible escape routes through the vines and trees that surrounded her. But before she could decide whether to run through the grove to the left or to the right, another voice emanated from the jungle.

“He’s right you know. That pond isn’t safe to drink.”

A broad shouldered man wearing a long overcoat stepped out into the clearing from behind a tree. There were the beginnings of a beard on his unshaved face and he held a funny shaped silver cane in one hand. An amusing smirk plastered on his face indicated he had been listening to the one-sided conversation.

“The name is Civor Baxuba. Pleased to you meet you,” he said, extending his hand towards the girl before retracting it back one quick gesture. He shot a glance at Warren, acknowledging the man’s presence, before he strolled to the side of the pond giving either party enough space to leave if they so wished.

“I can tell you two must be new to the island. None of us really stay outside for long in this place.”

Flo edged farther away from the pond, ready to run if necessary. However, after being greeted by two strangers in less than a five minutes there was a good chance she’d run into another bunch even if she ran away. She might as well figure out what was going on before she did anything else.

“What do you mean us?” asked Flo to Civor, her eyes tracking his every movement. There was no telling when the man would drop the act and turn violent.

“Oh, you don’t know why you’re here? Ha-ha, I would tell you, but it’s not safe out in the open. I’m going to have to ask you to trust me. ‘It’ should be coming soon.”

Civor raised his hand and pointed at the sun overhead. At first, Flo couldn’t see why he’d do that. It was just the sun, there wasn’t anything special about it. And then she saw it. The sun was moving; As if it were in fast forward. Shadows came and went in a blink of an eye. The sky shifted from a clear blue to auburn red. And as the sun began to set over the horizon Flo could feel a chilly breeze wash over her body. The girl shivered, trying to hug herself for warmth. Her eyes drifted to the west as Civor hand dropped down towards the opposite direction of the setting sun. A pitch-black darkness seeped in from the distance, casting everything in its wake into the abyss. As her eyes searched the sky she realized what he had meant. There was no moon or stars. It was going to get dark, very dark.

Warren was surprised by the voice coming from somewhere he couldn't see, As the man came from behind the tree he did not know what to expect. Since the man had introduced himself Warren figured that it wasn't polite to keep his name hidden. "My name is Warren Grant, nice to meet you." As the man stepped back, Warren looked at the ground and counted the steps between him and Civor. He was slightly startled when Civor said that most of "us" never stayed long outside. The only question that came to his mind was, which he wanted to speak out when Flo asked her question: "What do you mean never stay long outside, do you say that there is an inside here as well?"

The conversation continued without him seeing a chance to ask his question. When Civor pointed to the sun he looked up, almost blinded by that stupid mistake he looked down, but when he saw the face of Flo he couldn't resist looking up again and he too noticed that the sun had moved a long way in the few seconds that he had looked down. Warren looked at Flo, noticing that she seemed to be affected by cold, but he didn't understand why. As he looked at Civor again he saw how dark this night would become, pitch black. Warren turned around to see a last glimp of the sun as it was setting, followed by a almost silent: "Hope may never be lost, as the sun will rise again." Having turned into the breeze he now noticed why the girl seemed to be cold. He turned to Civor, realising that it was only going to get colder untill sunrise and asked: "Are you going to take us somewhere warm? Because if you intent to do so, I suggest that we'd hurry." He pointed towards Flo.

Masi nodded, smiling softly as he saw the figure, a girl, probably no older then he was. She was a little shorter then himself, and her freckled expression reminded him of the old American books he used to read.
"Greetings, my name is Masi. And welcome to the promised land.... or so i thought. It isn't very promising since I've been here." He nodded, walking back to the freshly cut plants.
"I am afraid... that sadly, i do not know, nor have the materials to make a fire. Nevertheless.... i do have some tinder, and i'm going to work to make myself more tinder. The bananas near that symbol is safe to eat, though they wouldn't be very appetizing."

He smiled, kneeling and going back to his work. He had managed to clear up quite a nice patch of land, before the event.

The plant's shadows begin to grow, and stretch, and a bewildered Masi looked up as he saw the sky turn from a sky blue, to a shade of red. He watched the sky and the sun for a few moments, before a cold wind blew thru his hair. It was cold, and the suns ray no longer provide heat.

Masi knew that they had an unknown amount of time left, before sunlight left them altogether. He had long grown accustomed to the darkness, living his life in a swamp.

"The ways of the promised land is odd indeed.... But i'll be damned... We need shelter and soon. Banana plant leaves would make great blankets for the night ahead."

"Nice to meet you Masi." Her ducked down in a small nod as she smiled again. "Um, thanks?" His way of referring to the place they were in was a bit odd, she thought. 'But I guess all this greenery can be somebody's idea of a type of paradise.'

Watching him walk back to the cut plants, she shoulders slumped a bit when she heard that he didn't have the materials to start a fire. 'Oh well, at least he has tinder? And he actually knows how to do start one.' Thinking about what would happen if it was left to her, she nearly laughed at the image of herself throwing a tantrum when she failed the nth time.

"Well, I have some fruit that kind of look like the ones you have there. And I saw some other ones as I was walking here too, so we won't starve? Do you mind if I tried some of those bananas anyway? I haven't eaten anything since morning." Yet another growl from her stomach confirmed this. Laying down her vest, she walked towards the symbol and took a better look at it as she retrieved the bananas. The symbol glowed when she stepped on it. Jumping back in alarm, she nearly stumbled as the shadows around her lengthen then disappear. A sudden darkness had covered them. Looking up, her eyes caught the last rays of the sun as it started to set unnaturally. The humid, warm air was cooling fast and she rushed to get her vest and to get closer to another human being. Her face grew worried.

Her head nodded nervously. "Yeah. Um, if I go get some tinder for the fire, could you start cutting sticks and leaves for a shelter? And start a fire when I come back?" The thought of having to move away scared her a bit, but there was really no other way to finish every thing before the sun set completely. All this strangeness had given her goosebumps and she rubbed her arms. Watching for his response, she absently pulled her sleeves down without looking, covering up the glowing numbers on the left arm.

Masi sighed softly as he listened to the girl. "Tell me, what do you see?" he said, holding up his skinning knife. "If i had an axe, indeed, i can probably cut some sticks. No, i'm afraid that with the light remaining, we do not have time to build shelter. The banana plants are in that direction, and i've seen some brown giant leaves on the floor. Those are what we shall use as covers. The night is cold. There is no need for tinder for today. Eat a banana, and then follow me. We shall forage for giant leaves."

His left hand was raised, and it was only then did he noticed the tattoo glowing on his left arm. He stared at it a moment, before shuddering slightly as he looked at the symbol of a triangle in a square on the ground.
"I swear, this place is freaking me out." he muttered as he walked hurriedly towards the banana plants.

Angel waited for Faustus to lead the way to the pond but a chill wind blew through the jungle. Chilling her almost to her bones. The jungle was turning dark by the moment. Maybe it was a overhanging cloud, but when Angel looked up at the sky the sun was completely gone. It wasn't the ordinary darkness that comes at night, but one that consumed all the light leaving nothing but darkness. Faint glows issued from Logan and Faustus to the extent that the numbers 800 and 435 respectively became clear to her vision. To Angel for some reason the back her was illuminated.

"Yay," Ariel joked, "We have a special backlight unlike the rest."
"It probably is a number as well," Angel said seriously, "What do you think they mean?"
"A ranking system?" Ariel suggested.
"Maybe, but could be something else." Angel said.
"What? A mad scientist keeping track of his experimental objects?" Ariel said with a tone of disturbance.

Angel contemplated the concept. But her body began shivering as the darkness completely descended on the jungle, only their reflective eyes and illuminated numbers can be seen. "Here," Angel said to the group as she spread out the nine coconuts on the ground, "Hold on to as many of these as you can. I need to put on the jacket. Its getting really cold here."

She pulled out the jacket from underneath consecutively putting some coconut in the jacket's hoody. Her shivering subsided by the cold still seeped into her skin. Through her partially wet t-shirt, other chilling wind could be fatal. In the pitch black darkness she could make out a dim glow far into the woods but no smoke.

"I think there some one else over there," Angel said to the group as he pointed at the glow which was about 100 meters away, "Do you think we should go and check it out?"

While waiting for a response, Angel looked around them for dry branches and other things that they could use to start a fire. The island being such a humid atmosphere, she only managed to break off a half dry branch and cones. Neither of which she could use to start a fire quickly. Then, she picked up a hard stone consider the sword at her belt and put it in her pocket. Hopefully, what she gather so far could start a fire.

Danielle blinked several times and flushed in embarrassment. "Oh. Um, sorry?" She nodded in response to his suggestions and followed him as he started walking. After peeling the banana, she took a bite. 'Bleh, this isn't much better than what I picked.' She made a face, but continued eating to stop the growling of her stomach. Despite what he said about the fire, she kept a lookout for anything that could be used as tinder. 'I'm pretty sure that the night will be too cold with a fire. If I don't slow him down, he won't mind me gathering some stuff right?' The light was disappearing fast and with it, the heat. Already she was shivering because of the wind. Tossing the banana peel to one side, she started on another one.

She noted patches of yellowy grass. 'Could that be useful? Maybe I could ask him on the way back.' The grass closer to trees were more green and there were occasionally some rotten fruits on the floor. She looked up at the one that were still on the branches. 'Too bad I don't know which ones are safe to eat.' The fragrant smells of the riper looking fruit and flowers was not unpleasant. She started daydreaming about what she could do if she had proper cooking utensils.

As the sky grew even darker, she noticed that Masi's left arm was emitting light. She remembered something from earlier. 'Wasn't there some sort of tattoo on my arm that was glowing earlier too?' Rolling up her sleeve again to check, she could clearly make out the numbers 648 glowing visibly. "Um, is there a glowing number on your arm too? Mine says 648."

He had turned back to look curiously at the girl after that comment. "Yes, indeed, i do have a number tattooed on my arm. Three hundred and twelve. It seems to be the price we have to pay to enter this land. I will need to find of a way to hide it for this night."

The vegetation crunched and bended under his steps, and Masi smiled to himself as he spotted the older banana leaves. They were brown, but most importantly to him, they were big, and their branches are easily snapped or sawed off. He got to work, climbing on top of one and using his body weight to snap it free. Letting it fall to the floor, he did the same to drop 8 different leaves from the nearby trees.

"I'm sure by now, that you noticed the damn rotten fruits on the floor of the trees." he spoke up as he dragged the leaves back to the clearing. "If you ask me, that is worrisome. Not a single monkey or creature in sight. Not even skeletons. It uneases me."

What did, that water is undrinkable, mean to these people? Did she think that pure optimism would negate the need for water to be boiled before he would touch the stuff. If they wanted to die, that was their decision. He was a survivor and that is what he would do, with or without these people. He growled under his breath as a response to her asking to be brought to the pond. He really didn't know if he'd been heard, but it didn't matter. It wasn't as if he cared one way or the other.

She had then decided to take off to find the stuff that Logan had gathered. He was left alone with him for that time, and it was spent the only way he knew how, he stared straight at logan, unblinking. He wasn't going to say anything unless he asked him something, what was there to say anyways. He didn't know this person.

After what felt like ages, Angel had returned with whatever she had gone to get, a jacket with large ball looking things filling it up. As soon as she slumped it to the ground, the sky started to darken prematurely, and fast! A grin spread wide on Faust's face as he crouched low and started to chuckle. This place was fucking with him. The waking up here, the numbers that glowed, and now the pitchblackness. The cold didn't really bother him, he was used to chilly nights on the wastes, he would be fine for a night. He stopped his laughing as Angel spoke up about trying to go to a light out in the distance. What was she thinking? Go to something that is probably also freaked out by the sudden night, or worse trying to lure in anyone dumb enough to follow light after a freak darkness....no he was staying here, fuck these guys.

And what the hell were these! These big hairy nuts? what were so important about these? He had seen these on tops of those trees, but he dismissed them, he after all had no knowledge that anything edible fruited off trees. He had seen pinecones before, but they were smaller than this. He let them stay where they had rolled and hadnt touch them at all. He started to chuckle againin response to her question. "That is precisely what I am NOT gonna do. I am going to sit here, and figure our what to do in the morning." He stared at her, his night vision was pretty good, but shit it was dark out. "You are welcome to go, but count me out."
