"I tend to stay away from meats as long as I can. Never know what might have been contaminated by the chemicals in this world" Vera denied politely. She glanced back at Mahli and Anna, recalling the monster she'd found gnashing its teeth at Anna, and Mahli urging her to shoot at it. She ripped apart the roll, removing the cheese to eat first as she looked at the two women, expecting one of the two to explain how such a strange bunch had come together in the first place.

A small squeak from the hazzling still on her shoulder drew her attention to it. The soft blue fur that covered it was glowing and it was staring at Anna and Mahli, big green eyes flashing from one to the other quickly. Vera remembered what the shop keeper had said, that Hazzlings could sense abilities to some extent. But Anna was a bounty hunter, and to be a bounty hunter with an ability was nearly taboo in the larger cities. Mahli had mentioned something about a cat. Seemed her companions were keeping just as many secrets as she was.

" I checked the meat my self , But you don't have to twist my arm."
Regal paused feeling something odd circling them. He noticed a lone crow as it circle. His gift after all was to feel the mind's of animals and what have you, though this crow felt different. I felt like a mixture of the two minds he had encountered before.
The crow flew ahead and Regal left the thought where it was. " So , this is a pleasant walk is it not?" He asked trying to fill the dull silence that came with a group that apparently didn't wish to talk. The woods had started to get thicker as much as they had walked, it was almost midday by this point. His eyes watched for the crow once more though.

Vera glanced up at the crow as it flew overhead. She didn't take much of a shine for birds as they tended to be thieving, disease ridden animals. Many of them had evolved into having abilities themselves. She'd had quite an awful experience with a flock of vultures that breathed a paralyzing mist over their victims before ripping away at their flesh. All why the prey was still alive, feeling the tugs. Hearing the horrifying ripping noise as their flesh was torn from their bones. In short, birds were disgusting animals. This one in particular seemed to take a particular interest in them as the Hazzling began the irritating squeaking it had before. The little creature was hopping up and down, its eyes flicking to the crow and then back to Vera as if trying to warn her of something.

"Birds are disgusting" She said out loud as they walked, finishing off what was left of her roll. She glanced up again. "I wonder if it has a mutation."

Mahli felt stiff. The animals in the forest were all speaking to her at once again and she could barely hear the words anyone said let alone Anna, who stood next to her asking of her family and birthplace. She looked to the skies, the birds seemed to have disappeared and the lioness in her purred slightly. Danger. She saw nothing and yet she felt it, something wrong she could not place.
"I come from a fairly large nation of tribes to south. Those who have sworn away money and material possessions for life lived from the land. We are called Naaldlooshii. The skin walkers, for all in my tribe are affected. My tattoos represent the battles and milestones I have held victory over. My father, the chief, leads these people with honor. I was born affected."
Her head turned forward, wishing to say no more.
She walked forward slightly, a few feet ahead of the group. The birds in the trees, they were slowly returning to the trees above, but they seemed odd, like they had seen the devil himself. She looked around at the other members of her group and she was surprised to see them unphased. She turned back and the hair on the back of her neck stood as she heard something approach fast, she crouched low and snarled. "EVERYONE STOP!"
The forest was quite, so quiet, Mahli could hear the blood in her veins, accompanied by the padding of paws on the ground. The padding got louder and louder until a large black wolf burst through the trees. Mahli threw off her bow and took aim, waiting for the creature to move. But it just stood there, snarling and pawing at the ground threateningly. Mahli growled low at the wolf, sounding more like a lion than a woman. As soon as he was there, the wolf tore through the brush again and MAhli shot to her feet and raised her voice to the sky in a loud yelp, calling on her friends.

"HOSHI!ASONALI!"

Birds from all directions swooped above the path following in the direction of the wolf, following his trail. It wasn't until she saw it with her own eyes, through they eyes of the birds, that she knew she was right. The wolf jumped from the cliff...and disappeared.

"nan isht ahollo okpulo. The devil."

Vera drew her bow and notched an arrow, waiting as Mahli intended. She took a quick step back as the wolf appeared from the brush and, with a snarl from Mahli, disappeared again. She lowered the bow, sensing still that not everything was as safe as they would believe. She caught an irony scent in the air, coming from just east of them.

She kept the arrow in place as she walked forward to join Mahli, scanning the surrounding trees for any hint of the wolves or something worse. The entire place felt wrong, as if even the trees were still watching. She'd never met such a place that could instil such a strong sense of omen in her. She glanced at Regal, wondering if he knew that the forest would be like this.

"There are definitely things that could eat us in here, but I never expected giant wolves." She said without letting go of her arrow. "Mahli, what is this 'okpulo' thing? Doesn't sound like something we want to meet"

The Hazzling on her shoulder gave an indignant squeak and bounced off her shoulder, hitting the ground and hopping off the path into the woods. Vera returned the arrow to its quiver and strapped the bow to her back again. "Hey! Where do you think you're going" She left the path to follow the Hazzling into the trees. "Would you wait up at least?"

Arcius continued to limp throughout the forest, keeping his machete shortsword ready for any trouble. His blue eyes scanned the trees and bushes for movement, trying to pick out anything dangerous. He felt a bit more tired then earlier, possibly due to blood loss. The young man wasn't worried though, he's been in more physically dire situations and walked out fine; wounds heal. He may have a small unpleasant memory from time to time, but it always passed.

He looked at the coin pouch filled with 30 gold still stuck to his palm; the only problem he still needed to get over. There was no doubt that the bounty hunter group from earlier was still looking for him, eager to take their earnings back without giving him a chance to explain himself. There were too many close calls earlier for the hunters to let him leave peacefully.

After a minute more of walking, he heard the sound of talking, and... some squeaking? Arcius quickly threw himself behind a tall tree and peeked around the corner. He saw a small blue bird-like creature heading down path with a woman calling out to it, and a man with red hair following her. Arcius watched them with caution.

"They weren't apart of the hunters earlier, were they?" He pondered, trying to remember. "Either way, as long as I stay quiet, they should move on and-"

The ice freezing the gold pouch to the palm of his left hand chose that moment to thaw, and the pouch plopped to the floor with a loud jingle.

Arcius' eyes grew wide in horror, hoping that they didn't hear that.

As soon as the noise reached her Vera spun, drawing her bow and an arrow faster than she could blink. She kept her eyes focused on the area where she'd heard the small jingling. The Hazzling stopped as well, looking toward the trees before bouncing off in the direction of the noise. It's chirping had stopped as he hopped up and down in front of a large oak. Vera moved toward it, keeping her weight off her heels for silence as she moved forward slowly. She kept her distance from the tree as she circled it, catching sight of a small brown pouch lying on the forest floor as she did so. She turned around the corner, finding a man standing against the tree and glaring at the pouch on the ground. The Hazzling had hopped to the pouch and was bouncing on it, clearly trying to get it open. Vera aimed her bow, taking focus on the man's temple and spoke with an eerie calm.

"What is your name, and why were you spying on us"

She glanced over the man. He didn't seem to be dangerous, yet there was a hint of sparkle on the pouch near his feet. Ice? It was the spring season. There should have been nothing cold enough to freeze that pouch. She used a slight jerk of her head to signal Regal to come forward, not relaxing the grip on her bow. "You have five seconds to give me a reason not you shoot this arrow"

Veon was sitting at the desk in his wide office. He'd been appointed the head of the Crosa bounty hunter station weeks before and still wasn't used to the change of scenery. When you were in the capital there were only buildings and dirt. Here in Crosa trees grew in the middle of streets because of some stupid tree god the people worshiped. Even the office he was given was covered in their religious artifacts. Three of the four walls were adorned with painted panels depicting the god, Verspa, saving a group of screaming saplings from a monster. The fourth was a huge window and balcony looking out over the main square of town. Idols of the prized god were place on shelves around the room along with feathery protection charms that were supposed to bring good fortune.

"Veon" Veon was snapped from his thoughts as Craine, the young bounty hunter he had working for him, motioned for him. She was a slight thing with big blue eyes and short blonde hair. If it weren't for her father and brother being part of the bounty hunter associations in Doral she wouldn't be in the trade. Veon had spared her a death from a monster by giving her a job registering and taking count of bounty requests. Standing with her was a young boy, obviously from the bird messenger post up the street. "This young man as a message for the commissioner. But since Mr. Calwren is sick I was instructed to give it to you. It's from Mayflower"

"Why would Mayflower being sending the commissioner a message" Veon wondered out loud as he crossed the office and took the message. It was written on crude paper, a sign of the small, poor village. It was indeed addressed to the commissioner. Veon glanced over the message; finding that it was a follow-up review for a bounty that had been filled there. The village elder had written the message and spoke of the bounty hunter sent for the request, a young woman whose name he didn't know, had left town with several strange people in the village at the same time. The elder was a well known artist, specializing in painting portraits, and he had sent along several drawings of the people she'd left with. The first was of a man with flaming red hair, looking war torn and dressed in the common garb of a guide. If the bounty hunter had been unfamiliar with the area his presence could be tallied up to being hired to provide a safe way back to her post. The second picture was revealed to be a young woman, taller than he would have expected and dressed in an almost primal way. He could see the marks of various colors across her face, whether they were paint or tattoos he didn't know. A name was scrolled across the bottom of the page. The elder explained in his message that the woman had called herself Mahli and seemed unafraid to reveal the name. She appeared to be human, and was possibly another guide hired by the bounty hunter in question, nothing to be too concerned about. He flipped to the last portrait. It portrayed a girl younger than the other two, the most astounding characteristic on her being the bright purple eyes. She was dressed strangely, in a dark blue tunic covered by a half cloak of black fabric. She looked familiar. He was sure he'd seen her before hand. This woman hadn't revealed her name, but the elder described how she had been seen buying a large amount of Hazzlings with strange currency, and coercing the people depicted in the first to portraits with her voice. It seemed as if she could be a leader, a human who commanded people just with her stature and independence. But Veon couldn't get past the eyes.

"Craine. Get me the file of the bounty hunter sent to Mayflower" He demanded. Something was wrong with a hunter and he had a feeling it was due to the three people shown before him.

Shit. Of all things that could of happened today, this had to be it; being held up by a woman with a bow, a rather intimidating one at that, aiming a bow right at his head. At least it wasn't one of the ones from the hunter group from before.

"Whoa, whoa, relax! I wasn't spying on you, and I mean you no harm." Arcius sheathed his blade and raised his hands in the air, but grunted in pain and grabbed his shoulder in doing so. Blood ran down from the wound and down the length of his arm, dripping onto the grass below.

"Look... I just need some medical help, and I want to get out of this forest. This place has a bad vibe to it..."

He looked at the two standing in front of him. The man with the red hair looked... experienced in whatever he did. The woman however, she was quite a looker. If he wasn't bleeding and being held up and threatened, he would of loved to talk to her in a more casual situation. The shuffling of gold brought his eyes to the coin pouch he dropped, and saw the blue creature trying to open it.

"You see the gold on the ground? That's thirty of it. If you help get this arrow out of me and stop the bleeding, I'll give you some. I really need some help here. Would I really attack you guys in this condition?" Arcius wasn't one to beg, but only good words and no hostility could help him get out of this one.

Arcius nodded his head in compliance. He'd do anything to get this arrow out of him; he didn't even feel like questioning if she knew what she was doing. The "You'll need someone to constantly keep an eye on it" line was a little worrisome, but he would deal with it after getting the wound treated.

The touch of the salve against the wound actually felt... refreshing. He mentally chuckled remembering how much he used to hate the cold, but his ice powers made it his best friend. The more he stood around this woman, the more interested he became in her. She looked like the type of person with many secrets, and those violet eyes were unnaturally appealing to him. Was she affected too, or was it her looks that drove him in?

The sting phase of the salve decided to divert his train of thought back to the situation at hand. When he heard her ask if removing his shirt was possible, he shrugged.

"I think the arrow's too high for me to lift it comfortably." He mentioned, looking over his shoulder at the arrow jutting out of him.

"I could get my jacket and shirt off, but i'll need help getting it around the arrow."

He then looked her in the eyes, his deep blue eyes making contact with her violet.

"Oh, and my name's Arcius Taiga. Sorry for not telling you that first, but not getting shot by you was a higher priority." He said with a chuckle.

She smiled as his dark blue eyes met hers for a moment, the feeling the swept over her was what she imagined people under her compulsion felt as she spoke to them. Looking away, she shook her head to clear the thoughts that had gathered, there was no time for this. She turned her eyes back toward Regal and nodded, letting him snap the arrow in two. "Careful, the barbs will hurt if you get caught by them" She frowned as she saw the half glare Regal was giving Arcius. She carefully peeled off his jacket and lifted the blood stained shirt until she could see the wound. She winced, the skin was swollen and dark red with both dried blood and possible infection. "We should work fast then shouldn't we" She said to Regal as she wrapped a piece of cloth from her bag around her fingers and griped the spiny surface of the arrow. "My name is Vera" She said softly as she braced herself and pulled. The arrow came out quickly, pulling at the torn flesh just as much as she thought it would. No sooner had she pulled it out, she pressed a clean cloth against it to staunch the bleeding. The salve she used should have been enough to prevent any major infections, but the redness of the wound still bothered her. The blood was dying her fingers through the cloth as she removed it and pressed a bit of bandage from her pack onto it. At this point it would weigh on her conscious too much if she let him die. "Whoever shot this was a good shot. Someone who knew what they were doing" She picked up the arrow from the ground and looked it over. The red feathers were a familiar touch, if only she remembered where it was from.

Arcius held still and braced for whatever discomfort he would feel. The red haired man snapped the arrow in two and then removed it, and the woman who said her name was Vera started to stop his bleeding. Every moment of it stung, but he tried not to let it show.

"Why'd you get shot boy? He heard the man ask him. Arcius bit on his lip slightly. Could he really tell them the truth? What if they saw him as too dangerous to be around and abandoned him, or worse, put him down for their benefit? He wrestled with the answer until he heard the man say that they needed to move.

"Okay, but it's a bit of a long story. I helped a group of bounty hunters fight off some monsters threatening a small village a small way from here. The place was small enough that the monsters thought they could easily overthrow it. After fighting them off, the village compensated us with 30 gold to divide between ourselves. After leaving, I wanted to hand them their share, but..."

Arcius inhaled sharply, wincing from the pain in his shoulder. "Hey, easy..." he said softly to Vera who was taking care of the bleeding.

He thought about the best way to tell them about his ability. Lying about it wasn't going to work if they already noticed the frost covered coin pouch, which he was surprised that the Hazzling still couldn't get into due to the thin sheet of ice on it.

"I have ice related abilities, but I haven't learned to control it that well yet. I accidentally froze it to my hand, and they thought I was trying to steal it, and tried to take it back. I froze their leader's arm by mistake too when he grabbed the pouch... next thing I know i'm running for my life through the forest. They shot me and I fell down a hill; I haven't seen them since."

He looked the man in the eyes, deciding not to lie about the next part. Hopefully they wouldn't leave him like this; they already might consider him dangerous to be around, and this might be the icing on the cake.

"...They might still be looking for me." The young man added hesitantly.

Vera carefully secured the bandage over the wound and stepped back, she was smiling as the man told his story. "You seem to have a bit of bad luck. But bounty hunters don't bother me any. The men are usually useless oafs that only want money and woman" She wrinkled her nose in disgust. "So ice huh? I thought there was something strange about you" She flashed her compulsion through her eyes, long enough for him to get a glimpse of her compulsion. "Gifts aren't anything new to us...well Mahli and I anyway. I don't know if Anna has fully processed it yet. She gave him a sideways smile. "Anyway, you could head to Mayflower, but I doubt they have much of a healer there. You'd be better off traveling to the river and then finding one of the bigger cities from there. If you don't want it to scar you'd have to go to Crosa or Hemingway."

She thought back to his comment on the bounty hunters. If they ran into them she probably would be able to at least trick them into believing his story, or cast enough compulsion around him to distort his image. Maybe Anna would convince them he had been her bounty charge. Typically bounty hunters left well enough alone as long as someone was getting justice. "I'm sure we'd suffice against a group of bounty hunters who shouldn't have needed your help to begin with, wouldn't you say Regal?" She was semi-positive that Regal knew what her gift was by now. And having him know it wouldn't affect her anyway. "I could probably....convince them"

Arcius listened to all the information that Vera told him. If Mayflower wasn't a good idea, where should he go?

He scanned the two and decided that they knew how to take care of themselves pretty well. Not to mention the fact that there was probably more of them somewhere due to the mention of someone named Mahli and Anna.

"Well... I don't have anywhere in particular to go; maybe I can just stick with you guys for a while. You look like you can handle yourselves, plus i'm not in the best shape to take on a group of bounty hunters in my condition if they were to find me. I'm feeling a bit weak from the blood loss, and my ankle still hurts from the fall. I don't want to be dead weight though, so I'll properly compensate you all."

Arcius started to collect his shirt and jacket, and slipped them on carefully, so he didn't agitate the wound anymore.

"If you want to treat this as an escort, I'll give you 20 gold out of the pouch I have." He offered, picking up the pouch with the Hazzling on it, then shook the thin sheet of ice off of the bag. The ice gleamed and shone as it fell towards the grass. "10 for fixing me up, which I appreciate, and 10 for getting me out of this place and protection against the hunters if we come across them."

He felt and took a mental note of Vera's compulsion. He couldn't exactly pinpoint what it did, but she definitely had an ability. He still wasn't too sure about the man with the red hair.

"So... what do you say?" Arcius asked, rolling his patched shoulder a bit, regaining feeling in his muscles once more.

Regal nodded to Vera. "We can't leave him to die, That would be dishonorable all things considered. That and the fact he needs stitches, I've got better medical supplies at the crossing I spoke of. "He said working everything out in his head." We best be moving soon if we are to get there by dark with a wounded fellow." He offered him a hand up. "And ,I agree with you on that vera, you do have a way with words." He smiled a bit, At least she trust me with that knowledge, though it seems a small thing how freely she seemed to give it out. He banished that thought like so many other's he had had today. Regal really didn't like having this new guy tag along , yet alone using up the medical supplies he had, but he did offer a fair payment so at least he was not an ass. "and if not words we have other ways of dealing with ....Irritations" He said ,only partly aiming it at the new guy as a reminded that he was at their Vera's kindness and his mercy.
" You should thank her, If it was I who came across you so badly wounded----" He cut off and turned. It was like he heard a wire snap off in the distance: each snap was like a twig breaking in the dead of night to him. Somewhere close someone died.... this didn't alarm him, it was the others that follows that made the hair's on the back of his neck stand up. He turned to the lad. " How many were chasing you?" he asked in a hush panic. " How many?! " Regals eyes were wide with fear. What ever had killed the men did so while making them piss them selves with fear. This was seldom an emotion on regals face or even less so in his heart even, not this close to a town, no this close to civilization. "Vera we have no time whatsoever anymore. We need to move quickly as possible to the river and cross it before night fall, his stiches be damned it can wait another night. Can you move quickly or will I have to carry you?" He asked the lad not being mean but fearful. any other time that would have been a stab at his manhood: but not now. Not when Regal could smell the copper in the air as a stag fled in panic not 500 yards from where they stood, and ran towards the humans.Something worse than a group of humans. Animal logic seldom did something like that. The hazzling caught the scent as well and ran up to Vera and hid. Death.Hide! was the only thing Regal could make out from the hazzlings mind.

Arcius Taiga

Arcius stood up slowly with surprise shaping his features. He saw the men running away, the same men who were chasing him earlier. Regal's question made him panic slightly. "T-there were six of them! What scared them off so badly?!"

He felt his body tremble slightly at the sound of the men screaming for their lives. They fought off maybe 4 or 5 monsters together. What could they have seen that struck them with so much fear?

"It's fine, I can walk." He quickly said in response to Regal's other question. His ankle still hurt a bit, but it shouldn't slow him down.

"I knew this forest was bad news..." He mumbled, reaching for the sheath attached to his back hip, and drew his machete shortsword.

Arcius had no plans on being killed in whatever was going on. He surveyed the area and felt that whatever was scaring these men, might be headed this way. He clenched his blade tighter, and faced the two who treated him.

"I'll stay close to you guys. What are we doing? Running, hiding, or dealing with this?"

"agreed, go Ill watch your back" He said quietly as they started to move Regal kept to the rear of the trio and kept his hand on his sword's hilt should anything happen , he might have a chance against what ever it was. See this is why we stay on the path, we don't find injured fools and beast that wasn't to kill us as often. He suddenly longed to be in his bed back in Doral. Its been weeks, I really should head home after this whole blunder of a trip. He thought about the real reason he was there, but he hadn't found what he was looking for.
Regals eyes scanned the woods for anything that might want to kill them that was following them. He heard Vera stumble and turned " Are you alright?" she just kept at it. He nodded at kept going making sure to keep an eye at their backs. They are leaving tracks...this is bad, really bad. He hopped what ever it was didn't want to kill them as well, fat chance but still.

Arcius Taiga

Arcius led Vera and Regal forward to hopeful safety, their footsteps almost rhythmic together.

"Oh yeah, let the injured guy go first with no idea what the other two look like." He mentally fussed. His blade was at the ready, and his eyes darted in all directions, hoping that nothing tried to come out and ambush them. It was times like this that he really wished he was back home in Hemingway. He held up his left hand and froze his palm. The ice glistened and shone to the point he can see his reflection. As pretty as it was, he knew this ice was nothing but a curse; he wouldn't even be out here if it wasn't for it.

He managed to do somewhat small feats with his powers, but had no control over the rest. The young man wanted to use his power to his benefit, but it usually backfired. He took a mental note to try and practice more. After thawing the ice off his palm, he turned looked over his gaze over shoulder to face the other two behind him.

"See anything? By the way, what does... umm..." His question trailed off.

What were their names? Oh yeah! Mahli and Anna.

"What do Mahli and Anna look like? Where are they?"

Right after the last word left his lips, he saw a faint glimpse of something big and yellow past several trees and bushes. It was going the opposite direction of them so he saw it for three quarters of a second.

He pointed towards it, his voice hushed and urgent. "I just saw something big past those trees! I think it was some kind of monster. I really hope you're group is nearby, because this forest is getting more dangerous every minute."

Against her will, Vera let out a frightened squeak as the child-like creature popped from the ground. "Please tell me I'm not seeing things" She said, taking a few steps back for safety. Whatever it was, she didn't like it. This child was clearly unnatural and dangerous. She wondered in the back of her mind if the monster could shape shift, as she'd seen some that could do so. She glanced to Anna and the others for help, adjusting her hands to get a better grip on her arrow and bow, keeping them pointed to the ground. There was a foggy pounding in the back of her head, like a blurred headache. She looked for fear in the others, instead of finding it she found Anna looking a Arcius angrily and Regal regarding him with a strange look.

"Can you not see the child that pops out of the ground?!" She said, exasperated. Was she the only thing that picked up on this?
