"Anything you want I can get, all you have to do is ask nicely"

0 · 586 views · located in Terra

a character in “Aceteria - Collapse of the Spirit”, as played by Kirihe

Description

Vera isn't someone you want to play around with. She's only 5"3 and a 125 lbs of black hair and bright violet eyes but she packs a punch that would send you flying. She deals in information, using her "super power" of compulsion to work even your darkest secret out of your skull. And she'll pass the information on to anyone...for a price. Vera travels light, with only a messenger bag, a pouch tied around her thigh, and her bow and arrows. The supplies you'll find her are mostly trinkets she's picked up for her price tag, basic supplies, and anything she takes a shine to while she's passing through. You'd be better off to leave her alone. But there's something strange about the violet eyed girl that makes you want to know her. And that may just be enough to get you trapped in her web.Though she has no family ties as far as anyone can see, Vera comes from the northern lands; a place of corruption and violence. She doesn't like to talk about her past, and keeps it all shut in for only her eyes to see. Though she seems harsh on the outside, when you get close she opens up to reveal her true self.

But don't get too enticed, it only takes one little blink to do you in.

So begins...

Vera didn't like rumors. So when she heard that there was a possibility of a changeling in MayFlower from one of her customers she headed straight for the small village, determined to find the truth. So far, she wasn't especially impressed with the small cluster of houses as she entered from its south side. People were hurrying to pack things into wagons as a man directed them to do so. She paused, watching the commotion for a moment before proceeding to push through the crowds to him.

"Why are the villagers leaving" She demanded as she reached him.

The man's eyes turned to her in fear as she spoke. "I-I....Um M-Miss. You, You s-should leave" His voice was shaking fitfully as he spoke.

Vera sighed, she hated when people were either too stupid or too fearful to answer her questions the first time. With a slow blink of her eyes she forced the familiar compulsion into her voice "I think you want to tell me why they're leaving" She batted her eyelashes at him, making sure her honey-soaked voice sank in deep, stretching its claws into his subconscious.

The man's eyes widened before they glazed over, caught in the trap she'd set. "A girl on the edge of the village is going to be a changeling. She ordered everyone to leave the village so she can deal with it"

"A female bounty hunter, hm? Haven't met any of those for a while" Vera smirked to herself and released the man from her compulsion. "Get out of my sight"

She left him there in the middle of the road, taking the path he'd indicated as he spoke. A female bounty hunter was somewhat of a rarity where she came from, and she was eager to see the woman in question for herself.

Vera paused as she heard the screaming noise, like nails on slate. It was close by, less than a street at most. Vera wasn't about to let this bounty hunter be killed before she got the chance to talk to her. She grabbed her bow from where it was slung across her shoulder and started toward the screeching. She rounded the corner just in time to see who she figured was the bounty hunter shoot out of a hut. She scoffed, looking at the girl with a hard scorn, barely a few meters away at this point.

"I thought Bounty Hunters killed monsters, not run scared from them" She said, giving the woman she was facing a look over.

She didn't seem particularly impressive, but Vera didn't have much experience with Bounty Hunters. She tended to keep away from them because they were hard to use. It was impossibly difficult to get into their heads with her compulsion and they kept out of Gamryway, the village she usually remained in.

Her attention was directed to the doorway of the hut as the monster crawled out of the doorway. Upside down. "Gross" she muttered, drawing an arrow and aiming at the creature. "Well Bounty Hunter, what do you plan to do about our friend over here?"

Mahli liked to walk. She walked here and there with not so much as a second thought. Today felt different as she packed her bedroll and set out again. The birds in the trees cried out to her. Something was wrong, but she couldn't make out what they were trying to say. She walked ahead calmly, not wanting to upset the forest further, in search of the disturbance. Her war club lightly bounced off of her leather wrapped legs and her bow rubbed against her skin. It was almost uncomfortable but Mahli welcomed the discomfort, for it meant she was alive and well and on another journey to nowhere.
Up ahead there was a large, and as she crested it, she could see a large village below. Her mind told her not to bother. It wouldn't matter where she went, she would always get the same looks. They were always strange to others, her thigh length raven hair, the feather, the tattoos and makeup that adorned her face, and even the more revealing leather clothes she wore. But out of all of her experiences in interactions with common townsfolk, it was her eyes that drove people away. They knew she was affected and no one bothered to look into the golden orbs for more than a second.
In the end, her animal instincts won out at the promise of food that had already been hunted and prepared. Hopefully the fox and rabbit pelts were enough to get adequate supplies. So she pushed ahead.

"Mother help me to survive."

She reached the bottom of the hill, close to the outskirts of the village, but couldn't help but quirk an eyebrow. The villagers seemed to be abandoning the village in a mild panic, not necessarily running, but definitely looking for somewhere else to be. She attempted to peak to them but none paid attention. Finally she stopped a middle-aged man in an apothecary's hat.

"Old man, what has happened here?"

Looking startled he averted his gaze, "A monster is there. If you value you're life you will leave this place."

Remaining silent, Mahli released her hold on his arm and walked forward into the village, what by this time was all but empty. She opened her ears and the panic of the forest reached almost a climax when a shrill, bone chilling, scream was heard throughout the air, adjusting her bow, and palming her war club, Mahli set into a run to investigate the scream. It wasn't long until she was forced to halt at the sight of a slight young girl with piercing violet eyes, and a taller, fairer woman in a suit of armor with her sword poised above something that looked to be a girl once. The girl was gone, however, replaced by a monstrous maneater. She looked between the two women, waiting on a blow that has yet to come.
So Mahli drew her club and stood at the foot of the bed and spoke clearly.

"Strike swift...or I will."

Vera's eyes flickered to the new comer, looking over her slowly. She'd never met anyone like her even throughout her traveling. The trip to Mayflower was turning out to be more of an investment than she'd thought.

"I was going to let Bounty Hunter do her job" She sighed. "But it looks like one way or another that monster is going to eat us."

She tightened her grip on the arrow and took aim at the monster, narrowing in on it's weak spot; a patch of smooth skin just below it's pointed ear. She released the arrow, sending it directly into the skin and causing the monster to screech in pain and anger. It turned away from the Bounty Hunter, focusing in on Vera. She drew her second arrow and took aim again, her eyes flashing from the two of them.

"Excuse me, but I don't exactly intend to take on this thing alone. So if you'd be so kind as to lend a hand" She rolled her eyes and sent the next arrow flying.

"...Neat..." Anna watches Vera hit the arrow into the monster's weak spot. Anna also notices a couple more people show up at the scene. Great... I thought I told the villagers to abandon the village for now. Now there are more lives at stake. That one with painted face, she looks different. Never seen her before. As the monster rushed towards Vera, Anna runs towards the middle of where the monster is headed.

As she neared the monster, the bounty hunter had flashes of the child before it turned into a monster and beads of sweat strung her forehead. She winced. But quickly she grabbed her sword with a fist and sliced the monster in half.
The monster was now moving in two directions. Slicing it didn't work. She had to aim for the head and slice it to smithereens.

Vera stepped away from the monster again. "Lovely, invincible monsters. Nothing better" She sighed and moved out of range. If the bounty hunter and painted-girl wanted to get themselves eaten it clearly wasn't her problem. If anything she could sell a bloody story for a nice price. Maybe one of those little blue furred creatures back in the market she'd passed. They were cute. Probably weren't anything to mess with either based on the black star they'd had in the center of their foreheads. Too bad she'd forgotten to see what they were.

"If you need me, I'll be over here" Vera wrinkled her nose at the disgusting smell of the monster in front of them. "I'd rather not be lunch, if it's all the same to you."

Mahli narrowed her eyes at the girl retreating from the room, a growling purr emanating from her throat at the thought of the battle that lay before her. However, no sooner than the she watched the girl leave the room, than the sickening suction of flesh meeting steel reached her ears. Her head whipped to the side to see the other woman with the sword had split the beast in twaine. Much to her amazement and disdain the beast remained awake, almost as if it would never die unless it was sated.
Mahli had to think quickly, one part due to the severity of the situation and also because the beasts upper half was crawling towards her with sickening speed and determination. Her eyes widened at the shear look of it, but she was able to snap out of it long enough to raise her war club over her shoulders and to bring it down with a roar.
Of course, one hit to the cranium merely stunned the beast, so Mahli lifted it once again and brought it down in the same spot. She repeated this over and over until the monsters brain laid strewn on her boots and all over the floor. Needing rest, she dislodged the club from its skull with a crack and took a few deep breaths. She closed her eyes and tilted her head back. The rest ws cut short however by the sound of thumping feet. Mahli looked to her left to see that the hal deposited legs and lower abdominal region of the monster had actually stood up and begun a slow and stumbling walk towards food. Mahli's jaw clenched and she sighed annoyingly.

"I have had enough."

Picking up her war club she spun in a circle and unleashed it upon the severed legs pinning then to the wall. She sat down on the floor and looked at the mutilated carcass of the monster that was.

And kicked it.

Anna Winterfrost puts her sword down. The battle, it's over for now. It would have taken her longer to defeat the monster if she was by herself. However with the help of these people, the monster finished within 30 minutes. Not bad, not bad at all.

Anna kept her eye on the girl with violet eyes and black hair, made note that she's a good archer.

She also kept note on the girl who had painted face and beads in her hair and made note she was a good fighter.

Anna saw there was 3rd party member with ears and a tail, it was a man who was about over 6 feet who ran into the commotion. As Vera turned around and walked the other way, Anna turns towards them as her back was facing the crowd.

"...Thank you!" Anna shouts to the crowd, though it's not very loud. Anna's voice was very quiet and soft compared to her stature. She puts her sword back in it's hilt and carries on her back. She said her name hesitantly. "My name... It's Anna."

"Who's bounty is this? Why, I claim it. Does anyone want to spar for it? That's what I thought. I'll take the bounty to Hemingway Capital."

Vera was leaning against a wall, taking in the entire scene before her. Villagers were beginning to creep around corners to see the slain monster at the Bounty Hunter's feet. She'd barely managed to catch the girl's name by the soft voice she spoke in. Vera took a few moments to survey the scene, making sure enough people were around that the Hunter would have a hard time getting away with striking her in public before walking forward. She closed the distance between the two of them, lifting her head high.

"Vera Mason" She smirked, leaning slightly toward the shier girl. "All the information you could ever want right at your fingertips" She stepped a tiny bit closer, flashing the girl a smile. "For a pretty price of course. Not always money, no. But a shiny trinket or a favor would do" She forced a little bit of her compulsion into the last bit, making sure it sunk as deeply as it would go before stepping away. "Does Anna have a last name? Or can I still call you Hunter"

Mahli scowled and stood abruptly. She walked calmly over to the dead lower half and ripped the war club away violently. She then turned and cleaned the diseased and coagulated blood from the blade onto the dead would-be girl's sheets. Quickly she put the war club back into its make shift leather sheath and walked slowly to the two women, taking note of the man outside of the door, a Anthro as well perhaps?
Her face emotionless as she studied them blatantly. The taller one said her name was Anna. She is strong, sometimes uncontrollably so. I was almost as if she was at war with her own strength and had not found her true form. She was fair of face though, an incredibly beautiful woman, something that clashed with her powerful physique.
Mahli turned to the littler one and quirked an eyebrow, realizing almost instantly that the girl was trouble and mischievous. Those violet told al she needed to know, she was most definitely affected, but how? Her earlier jibes suggest something of the mind. Mahli would bet that silver tongue saved her more than once. She was fair like the other, but her features were more angular, like a fox or a deer. Their fathers must be proud to have such fair offspring. But then again, why are they here? A question she barely cared to know the answer to.
She stated that her name was Vera. Mahli scoffed, the name was fitting she supposed. Unfortunately for the girl, there were no money or trinkets, nor any desire for bounty to be found here.

She looked at both and spoke in a clear voice accented with her native tounge"Money is of no importance to me. I've come to investigate and do what's right. I've done that."

Mahli adjusted her bow and club, taking a drink of water she walked towards the door and gazed upon the other Anthro-being while taking another sip. She wiped her mouth dry and turned around.

"My name is Mahli." saying just loud enough for the other guest to hear, while also casting a challenging glance at the naysayer who's ego he decided to pronounce to the entire village.

Regal wandered into town by this point. Dark leather armor , a well used short sword on his hip, a bow in his hand and a pack on his back. His blood red hair was thick with grime but his dark green eyes cut through the muck on his face. There were a group of people over by a body. So that was all the noise was over. ' He shrugged and looked for a trader or a tavern though the likelihood of such a thing was nil. He gave up his search after a moment. He saw a well and moved to it. I'd rather not deal with that mess. he said watching the two women, clearly bounty hunters. He held him self like a proud man but not aggressive, quiet the opposite, he seemed to have a rather lax posture.

"Actually, that proclaiming voice is me..." Anna said as she stood out. She didn't feel so shy when it came to work. It was like she had two sides to herself: one shy and the other strong and protective. Two sides of her coin.

"I guess we can split the bounty since it only seems fair. I know I am in need of money, if any of you are. It wasn't that much though, it's about 5 golden coins. MayFlower village does not make that much money, which is fine. "

"There's also an Inn in Hemingway if you all are interested if you don't know. I know the bartender there. His name is Kerry and he's a pretty big middle aged man. You all must weary from your travels. I also need to stop by the bounty office and receive the gold coins, which we shall split. "

Anna also looked at her armor and realized it was in so good condition.

"I also need to repair my armor in Hemingway's marketplace... It is nice to meet all of you. By the way, Vera, I do have a last name. But I'm not going to tell you." Anna batted her eyes and smirked at Vera. Anna felt like she was laughing inside, it was funny to her.

"Also Mahli? Is it? Your clothing, I've never seen before in this country. How did you know to investigate here?" Anna looked at Mahli.

Anna noticed that there was a newcomer to the party. She didn't know his name, but by his stature he seemed like a regular young man.

"Why, seems like someone has made it here to the village as well." Anna says to the group about Regal.

If there was one thing Vera hated most in the world, it was being teased. She did plenty of it herself, often using it to get her victims to lower their guard. Her compulsion got her most of the things she wanted in life, and if she ever needed for anything she could usually depend on it. But it was harder to influence those who'd developed abilities of their own and those who knew their own strength. Bounty Hunters were typically human for the most part, making it a stupid idea to go after monsters in the first place. Vera felt the familiar frustration of not being able to get inside a person's head build up. She clenched her fist, willing her breath to come out evenly as she looked between Mahli and Anna. Both of them were considerably taller than she was, with wider stances. Mahli was leaner than Anna though, and looked as if she could knock the bounty hunter out with a good smack to the head. Anna on the other hand looked like she'd rather be friends than fight, a trait that wouldn't come in handy if they needed to protect themselves again. But, Hemingway was a bustling economy; full of gullible suckers she could woo into getting her way. And who knew, maybe she could worm a few secrets away from the tribal woman while she was at it.

Vera turned her attention from Anna to Mahli, taking in the way the woman was looking at her. It was as if the woman could see inside her to the compulsion that she thrived on. She felt herself mentally recoil as her eyes met those that were so clearly staring into her very soul. If she didn't already know about Vera, she had a good guess, and that was very dangerous. Vera didn't like when people go to close. It invited intimacy, and intimacy meant she got the secrets she didn't want. Things she never wanted to hear. If she were to travel with the two of them she would have to worry about Mahli more than Anna. Anna was easy, predictable. She didn't know female bounty hunters as well as she knew their male counterparts, but chivalry was always in their blood. She could always twist that ethical sense into a defense for her. But the other woman. She would have no sense. The intent she held was personal moral, not career related, and Vera got the distinct impression that it wouldn't be easy to persuade her.

"Money is what makes the world go round, Mahli" Vera forced her compulsion into her voice, thicker than she ever had, ensuring that everyone in the area felt it. "If it weren't for the pretty things I take a liking to I wouldn't be here, and I can help you both. I know more about this country than people think. Information is my trade, and I'm good at it. But as I said, everything has a price" She settled her voice once more and focused the compulsion in her eyes, making sure she caught the gazes of both women.

Regal's ears picked up a keyword.Money. He looked about and saw the three women , they seemed apt to taking care of them selves. He weighed the risk of asking them if they wanted someone to take them quickly to Hemingway. Hemingway was about 3 days away if you walked, 2 if you hurried. Regal knew a path that maybe took 2 days if they dragged their heels and stopped every time they saw something interesting. He shrugged, why not, one coin would feed my scrawny ass for a week.
He approached them. "Pardon my ease dropping, But did I hear there was a dire need to get to Hemingway? " He asked. He voice was rather fair for such a gruff man, not feminine by any means but nor was it a voice that seemed to travel the waste, It was more like a bards voice. "Forgive me I haven't introduced my self. Regal Withernorth , guide of guides. " He bowed slightly.
"As I was saying, I could get you to Hemingway In a day, at the most a day and a half for one of those gold coins you've earned. "
He motioned to the corpse. " Might I add the path I take is safer than the road where some ill mannered rouge might attempt to collect your gain. Not that you wouldn't be able to fend them off , It makes more sense to avoid suck ....altercations...does it not?" he let the question hang in the air.

Mahli closed her eyes and took a deep breath and the girls words slid over her mind, making her think thought she had never had before. So her suspicion was correct. It seemed the girls affection was some form of mind control. Mahli looked to Anna then back to the girl, her eyes growing wider and more angry as the girl continued to speak.
"Everything has a price," she said with such deep intention that Mahli actually gave a growling purr from deep within her throat. She couldn't believe the audacity of such a girl.

Her voice became more grainy as her temper rose. "Unfortunately for you," she said looking her up and down, "The lust for money was never there."

For added measure , Mahli unhooked her war club and plopped in on her shoulder. She did not like to be messed with much like her spirit animal and she was prepared to fight if necessary. She took a step towards a window inside to calm down, but eventually turned with a solemn look to the girl.

"You'd have a much easier time with my lust for freedom than my lust for money," she looked to Anna, "or fame."

She turned to look back out of the window again, but she was forced to immediately turn at the sound of someone approaching fast.
It was the man hiding, the other anthro. She took wide steps and barely heard him ask if we were going to Hemingway. She looked at him curiously as he continued on about a path to Hemingway and that he was a guide of some sort, probably out to con her as well. As soon as his last word left his lips, Mahli raised her war club to rest just under his neck, and while he was about 3 inches taller, she stood her ground and looked to all of them, speaking with purpose.

"Let me speak now so all is clear, I am Mahli, the wind walker, i need no guide, no fame, and no currency. I came to this place after a scream was heard and i killed the monster it belonged to, as intended. Do not get so comfortable with me to assume we are to travel together, for I have absolutely no reason to trust you."

Lowering her weapon she gazed at her rabbit pelts, that were once tied to her side, had been ripped off and cover in monsters blood. She sighed in frustration and looked to Anna. "I need supplies fo I will follow you to this Hemingway so as to aquire them, " she looked to everyone and restrapped her war club and adjusted her bow, "Let's go," she walked out calmly.

"I'll go with you" Vera said slowly, looking between the three people that surrounded her. She was still seething from the ineffectiveness of her compulsion. Now Mahli would know exactly what her ability was and memories were hard to get rid of. Taking a journey with them would be risky. "But it's only because I'm a nice person and you might need my....expertise"

She made sure her words were punctuated by a long, hard stare at Mahli and Anna. They would both need to know that Vera wasn't going to be someone they could take advantage of. She was a fighter and a master of her trade. Neither of them would be the ones to bring her down from everything she'd worked for.

"You will need me you know" She smiled, directing the tiniest bit of compulsion toward Anna. "Some bounty hunters aren't nice. And I know all the mean ones. Where they live. Where they spend their time. Who's in their pretty little bingo books."

She let the words sink in to Anna, hoping there was enough truth in the lie to be believable. While it was true that she had her own bingo book, one that she updated with the bounty master of each town, she didn't know all the bounty hunters who might have a price tag on any of their heads. The only one she really knew was a man in Crosa that hated anyone with the mutations with a passion. She'd kept away for the most part, hoping that he wouldn't take any special interest in her.

"Especially in Crosa" She lied again. "They don't like people like me up in Crosa. And their bounty hunter doesn't like new hunters in his territory"

"Does everyone have a habit of picking on me" Vera said with a huff of breath. "Nevermind the nonsense with needing a guide, why does everyone have to play me off like a silly parlor trick"

She turned her eyes on Regal, staring him down. The compulsionist had had enough with people trying to brush her off like the common house hold pest. This man was the last straw, she focused every ounce of the fury she felt into her words, shoving the compulsion at the three of them with everything the had.

"You will not be walking away from me. All three of you will sit here and talk over a bargain like adults. Regal will take us to the city for a fair price. Anna and Mahli will not be arguing the point. And we will not be degrading each other by speaking to the village elder and taking it out on them!"

She kept her fists clenched tightly, focusing the compulsion on their minds for as long as she could before letting out a huff of breath and placing her hand on the building closest to her. Her head felt fuzzy and her balance was off; colors and shapes swirling in front of her eyes.

Mahli bit the inside of her lip and tried not to turn, her eyes blazing a bright gold at the man's temper tantrum in from of the whole town. She turned and grit her teeth at the onslaught of fury that welled within her, but it ceased at Vera's words and she took a few good deep breathes. She had to hand it to her, whether or not she was able to control her at all, her strong compulsion to calm was non negotiable and something Mahli welcomed, especially before anything bad truly happened.
She walked up and placed a hand on the girls shoulder and touched foreheads with hers before straightening, not moving her hand, "Thank you, friend, for you surely prevented a disaster." She gave a small but reassuring smile, removing her hand from the slight shoulder and turned towards the man in front of her now. Her eyes narrowd a slight bit and she took another breath.

"Calm yourself. Any true warrior of merit would have done the same. Not only did you run towards our presense, but you did so after an honorable, but horrific battle. You presume to know what we do and you require money for this knowledge. You also presume that we are not capable of protecting ourselves which, if you were to investigate, is untrue. If i frightened or offended you I am sorry. You should know now before we continue that my cat doesn't like suprises," looking around at the gathered crowd, "or strangers." She placed her fist up to her forehead and immediately placed that hand to her heart.

"For this I am sorry. Know I am a warrior to my very soul and will try to avoid such dealings in the future. "

Mahli adjusted her bow and looked around the townspeople staring at her and then she looked to the others, "We should leave soon if we are to reach the next town by sundown.

Regal nodded slightly. "Forgive a mans temper, I have been wander on my own for months learning new trails .I forget myself sometimes. And many kill for gold and I heard such spoken today, I meant no disrespect until I did mean it. " He said rather frankly. this was under his own accord not the power of the word witch. though their exchange had been...odd.
"And you are right if we going to make it on the marrow then we should indeed be off." He turned again "We can discuss the road when we are well enough away from it" He said as he started to walk away.

Vera blinked away her confusion. In all honestly she hadn't expected it to work, let alone produce results as well as it did. She was internally pleased with herself as both of them turned around and didn't kill each other as they did so. about time she thought to herself as they joined together again in the center of the street. She was especially pleased that the man, Regal, had listened to her as well, seeing as she hadn't had any success with her compulsion since the man who told her about the Bounty Hunter.

A gentle touch to her shoulder startled her from her thoughts. She jerked her head around just in time to catch what Mahli was saying to her. Vera watched as the woman looked away from her to the man who was glaring harshly at Vera. She glared right back, already irritated with him. She made a mental note to keep an eye on Regal. He seemed the type of person who would slit your throat in your sleep and do it gladly. She would make sure to put Anna and Mahli between the two of them while they were traveling. Safety first.
