The Tel'tsu Commonwealth

A curious but cautious people hailing from Tel'tsu, a planet in a small cluster in the Perseus arm.

0 · 413 views · located in Sol

a character in “Across a Cold Expanse”, as played by Chuckles

Standing on average 5 feet tall these fairly humanoid creatures boast a double jointed leg (akin to a horse but with longer upper leg, medium mid leg and short lower leg) with a large single hoofed toe and two minor toes set off at between 45 and 90 degrees from center at the back of the foot. The back bone has a defined S curve with a strong but slim mid section coming up to a full chest. Their arms boast a moderate amount of strength, most notably their shoulders and upper arms, which is some what less reflected in their lower arms and slender five digit hands. The hands boast two opposable thumbs set on opposing sides with three slender fingers between them.

Females have a slightly thinner upper frame. The most notable distinguishing body feature of the female is a tail, typically half the length of the body.

The head rests upon a somewhat slender neck, the skull is slightly elongated compared to human skulls. They tend to have a very firm jaw line, defined cheek bones and a deep brow. They have almost no nose to speak of, the four nostrils are set close to the face, two vertically and two on each side in quarter circles. The nostrils are surrounded by flaps of muscular tissue that can cover or even completely close them.

Females have dramatically softer features over all.

An elegant head dress of hair like feathers grows from the center of their scalp, beginning at the crown and working backwards toward the top of the neck. These feathers are generally three to six inches in length at the crown. They boast multiple colors depending on the clan and breeding. These feathers are pliable but will stiffen and stand on command, usually when angered or as a boast, resulting in a dramatic display. The rest of the head is most often bald except in adolescents who have a soft short hair covering their hears

Females grow a full head of feathers, though they do not grow as long nor brilliant as the males.

Eye color varies, light greens, blues, and yellows are common, along with mixtures of those colors. Very rarely a dark eye color will be found, though there is a certain stigmata about a dark eyed Avarian.

Avarians have naturally sturdy and strong legs and large lungs. They have impressive endurance and precision. They are fairly adaptable to environments and climates though they prefer moderate to warm temperatures. Despite their natural strength they are build smaller than some races and by some standards seem rather frail. Their eye sight is very good, able to see quite a bit further than humans clearly.

- Lifespan: (Measured in earth years)
Males 80
Females 100

~23 Billion - ~ 43 million military personnel
- Territory:
Home system: Tek Alasia
Capital world: Tel’tsu - temperate climate, 10 billion
Gansu- Local moon 1.8 billion
Other: Mie - largely agricultural with a band of desert across the equator, 8 billion
Jilin- Local moon 1.5 billion
Hunan- Local moon 1.7 billion

Ishikawa - colony station and military/naval outpost orbiting the planet in the Retch System, the only system to which the Tel‘tsu have expanded. ~700,000

-Note on Ishikawa- The planet is a large jungle planet, home to a very large population of medium sized quadrupedal creatures which the Tel’tsu call “Mika”. These creatures are sapient but retain a certain “feral nature”. They are pack like animals, these packs extent to massive numbers with a single leader, much like the clans of the Tel’tsu. The Tel’tsu are currently in negotiations with some pack leaders to absolve them as a client nation. Mika would make an invaluable (and expendable) addition to the Tel’tsu army.

Avarians live in close family groups referred to as houses. Houses include multiple nuclear families who will have their own living space. The oldest child will remain with in the family House, taking on the role of Elder when their father or mother passes. Other children will live in their own homes, be married into other families, or serve in the military. (Though service in the military is not limited to those who do not marry). Houses are connected by Clan, a loose connection representing the common ancestry of the families there in.

Avarians are natural artisans and craftsmen. As a result they have as much an eye for form as they do function, all things should be done well. They pride themselves on which ever skill they master, and all skills are worthy of pride. This has planted a deep seeded urge to do better, become more, be greater than oneself. While competition between Avarians is common and fierce it is nothing compared to the competition with one’s self. This is the driving force behind every advancement in the Tel’tsu society, nothing is ever “good enough” so long as there is any possibility that it could be better.

They have a form of cast system. The Ruling House, the Warrior class, and the Common class. The Warrior class is not elevated above the Common class other than in respect and honor. The same is expected of the members of both classes, to do all their tasks well. The Warrior class and Common class are most interconnected.

While slavery of a fellow Tel’tsu is unheard of they are not openly against the concept of alien slaves/servants though they feel (generally speaking) that any creature doing work should be treated well and provided for.

Tel’tsu are naturally curious, they are not a shoot first ask questions type of people despite being cautious of the unknown. They will generally attempt contact and communication with any species they contact, hence current negotiations with the Mika.

The Ruling House:
The Tel’tsu commonwealth is ruled by a single House which is advised by various Clan representatives. This system emerged when the Clans were finally united by Lord Tsu Xain in the Last War of Sorrows, or the Commonwealth War.

Prior to the Last War of Sorrows their was often infighting and warring between clans. Since then the Xain house has held its place as the Ruling house, uniting the clans under the commonwealth, the discovery of alien technology has fortified this union.

Jump Gates:
One jump gate at the far edge of system space and two (one unexplored) jump gate exists in the neighboring Retch system.

The most notable accomplishment of the Tel’tsu is that of the Perpetual Motion Ring. While fusion reactors still play a role in supplying power the advent of the PMR has cut the need for them in the civilian domain down dramatically, this has allowed the navy access to a vast amount of fuel surplus. This is not true "perpetual motion" though. It is an extremely efficient form of energy recycling in which a small charge or fuel source is required to maintain a base constant. The Rings then are able to siphon latent energy and recycle it into the electrical grid.

On the battle field information and sensory systems are considered indispensable, as much or more so than a weapon in hand. While physical integration is considered taboo, the Tel’tsu surround themselves with technology. The Military is a prime example, no Tel’tsu is sent into battle with out a full range of information and sensory devices which are normally implanted in their helmets. These include highly accurate range finders, communication devices, holographic HUD view plates, atmospheric sensors, audio enhancement and even IFF and movement indicators. Some are equipped with high level targeting devices which are integrated into both the weapon and the HUD.

Tel’tsu employ a range of weaponry including rail guns, Mass Accelerator Cannons, and laser technology ranging in size from the Naval Las Canon to the standard Combat Lasrifle.

Las weaponry: Due to the nature of laser weaponry the Tel’tsu designed a two part thermal type clip that acts as both a power source and a heat sink. The heat energy generated from the weapon can be recycled on a small scale to extend the normal life of the power supply but eventually the supply must be replaced. These supplies can be fully recycled upon returning to base or ship.

Las weapons are designed to fire short burst of energy which allows for a greater use of thermal clips but can be switched to fire continuously as a cutting tool.

Naval Las Canons are directly linked to ship power and heat sinks, as a result these weapons require very little service. They have a cool down period which varies depending on the repetition and duration of use.

The Navy once used missile’s in space combat but with the advent of Point Defense systems it became clear that spending hundreds of thousands on missiles that had a small chance of hitting their targets was a waist of funds. All but one ship class has completely abandoned their missile capabilities.

Ship Design:
Tel’tsu ships are mighty testimonies to their eye for detail. These craft are often long and sleek, arching forward hulls and sweeping lines are common.

Tel’tsu ships utilize a fusion reactor to fuel their drive systems. They employ "perpetual motion rings" to power all electrical systems aboard their starships. These rings piggy back off the Drive Reactors for the necessary base constant energy. Latent energy is grounded to large "Ground Sinks". The Perpetual Motion Rings siphon energy out of these sinks to recycle it. Other heat sinks are built into the frame work of the ship to control whatever energy and heat that can not be recycled by the PMRs

Military ships by class:
--Note on designations:

Ship of the Fleet: Any Military ship designed for military engagement. These ships generally have forward oriented firing positions and are used for a multitude of tasks. Noted by the deep red hulls.

Ship of the Line: Any ship designed for the specific role of military engagement and naval combat. Often capable of firing devastating broadsides as well as forward oriented firing positions. Noted by deep red hulls with massive white bands or striping.

Ship of the Commonwealth: Ships that are not necessarily specifically designed for military engagements. These ships are often used in Colony building, Large troop / personnel transportation. Noted by pure white hulls with blue striping.

Mariad class Ship of the Commonwealth (Frigate): Diplomatic relations.

A long range and agile craft, elegant in design. The sole purpose of this ship is inter planetary relations.

Armament: Point defense lasers (PDL) 2 Naval Las Canons (NLC)

Sword class Ship of the Fleet (Frigate): Support and transportation.

A long range craft, similar in design to the Mariad, outfitted for support role. Often used to escort Mariad class ships.

The most fearsome ships in the fleet, Fuji class ships are easily twice the size of Tsunami class ships and are completely devoted to Naval Superiority

Armament: PDL, 20 hMAC turrets, 20 NLC, 16 medium BRG’s, 8 heavy BRG’s, 6 heavy SRG’s, 6 Planetary Bombardment bays, 6 Planetary Assault bays (drop bays)

Tel’tsu class Ship of the Commonwealth (Dreadnaught): Combat, planetary assault, colony ship, diplomatic relations. Flag ship of the Commonwealth.

The pride of her people, the largest ship of the fleet this Dreadnaught serves primarily as a colony ship though it is heavily armed and armored.

Armament: PDL, 40 hMAC turrets, 40 mMAC turrets, 20 NLC, 14 heavy BRG’s, 6 heavy SRG’s, 10 Planetary Assault bays.

Planetary Bombardment Bays:
These gun bays consist of two ultra heavy MAC turrets, two Planetary bombardment Rail Guns and two standard ordinance launchers. This is one of the few areas in which the Tel’tsu employ “conventional” ordinance. These conventional weapons are “smart-dumb” fusion bombs yielding between 8 and 10 megaton blasts which are housed in “Entry vehicles” akin to guided rockets. This is the only type of weapon the Tel’tsu employ that has never been used in clan warfare, created as a byproduct of the militaries involvement with fusion reaction power plants.

Tel’tsu boarding parties:
These are the only soldiers in the Tel’tsu army issued ballistics weapons. It was found that the projectile weaponry was effective in the low gravity environs in which they often worked. They wear air tight combat suits with multiple provisions from electrically magnetized boots to small vector thrusters.

Military Design:

Standard Tel’tsu armor:

The Tel’tsu warrior wears a thick micro prism / carbon weave under suit. This loose fitting garment helps dissipate laser fire. Over this he wears a form of plated armor, large plates cover the shoulders and upper arms, the chest piece fits over the head and has a large collar. The lower torso is guarded by a plate hanging from the chest piece. Four plates are belted around the waist, two larger one on the sides and smaller front and rear. The paints are the same micro prism /carbon weave, but with armor plating built into the thigh, and lower leg. The leg below the second knee is protected by the boot.

The helmet is a two part construction, the lower is a mix of flexible material that fits around the neck and a hard collar that follows the jaw line and wraps around the back of the head. The upper surrounds the head. The forward portion of the helmet has multiple sensors and a reinforced view plate / HUD, the rear is slightly elongated and holds the internal communications systems.

Tel’tsu armor is a variant of the same micro prism weave of the under suit wrapped tightly over scaled carbon weave plates.

The Under suit is a dark bluish black while the armor plates are primarily tan

Military over view:

The Tel’tsu military is small, highly effective at medium to long range, and focused on fast engagements. They lack the heavy artillery that many nations have. What they lack in numbers and firepower they make up for in shear proficiency and awareness. The military is constantly on alert, recon is a priority as the army lacks the heavy power to get into a pinned position and last long. They often strive to meet their enemy in the field to allow more opportunity for troop movements.

Military Organization:

Expeditionary force 2 - 6 Planetary Assault Groups

Planetary Assault Group 2 - 4 Grand Armies

Grand Army 2 - 4 armies

Army 2 Battalions

Battalion 2 -4 Assault Groups

Assault Group 2 -6 Companies

Company 4 - 8 Platoons

Platoon 4 - 6 Attack teams

Attack team 2 -4 Combat teams

Combat team 4 - 6 Squads

Squad 2 fire teams

Fire team 8 soldiers

Military Units:

Las weaponry: Due to the nature of laser weaponry the Tel’tsu designed a two part thermal type clip that acts as both a power source and a heat sink. The heat energy generated from the weapon can be recycled on a small scale to extend the normal life of the power supply but eventually the supply must be replaced. These supplies can be fully recycled upon returning to base or ship.

Las weapons are designed to fire short burst of energy which allows for a greater use of thermal clips but can be switched to fire continuously as a cutting tool.

Fire team: the common soldier carries a Laser rifle and pistol into battle as well as a variety of survival tools. These rifles are the core of the Tel’tsu army, a medium to long range weapon with good accuracy and good power. They run on power packs that can be replaced in the field and recharged at the fleet. These soldiers are efficient marksmen.

Ranger team: these soldiers are highly trained and issued small scale Rail rifles that enable them to fire over large distances, beyond naked eye visual. These teams often incorporate two soldiers, a spotter with a special range helmet who carries a standard Las rifle and ammunition, and the sniper who carries the Rail rifle and extra supplies. These units are trained to operate in stealth, but also at distances of up to 2 miles away from their targets.

Support team: These teams carry special com arrays to assist in battle field connectivity and mapping. They also carry a Las Canon. They will set up nests at strategic points in a battle to aid the Fire teams

Heavy Support team: These teams forgo com arrays and jump strait to heavy weapons. These are the strong arm of the army, often used as anchors. Their Las Canons and equipment make them much slower units over all.

Deep combat teams: These fire teams specialize in infiltrating the enemy line, or getting as close as possible to them as opposed to the traditional Tel’tsu nature of keeping the enemy at a distance. These teams are brutal and effective at causing disarray in the enemies rank. Deep Combat teams have a high mortality rate.

Vehicle support:

Support vehicles are semi-aerial based platforms. these hover two to ten feet off the ground utilizing turbo fans and are powered by the same electrical generators that power Starships electrical systems. They have a micro-fusion reactor aboard, these reactors are not nearly as efficient as starship reactors. These vehicles require periodic refueling (Once a month or so) but do require a regular maintenance and can be grounded do to over use, poor maintenance, or damage.

Shanxi: These medium armored vehicles have two las canons and are used in mobile units to transport Fire teams quickly around the battle field.

Piranha: These armored vehicles have a turret mounted MAC gun, these craft can devastate most infantry.

Swordfish: These vehicles have forward mounted las canons as well as a turret mounted Rail gun. These are effective against armor.

Taka: These aircraft are interceptor craft, designed to protect ground units from enemy air craft. These units are mounted with PDL’s as well as forward mounted Las Repeaters.

The Avarian race has a long history of clan rivalry and war mixed with one of great craftsmanship and beauty. For thousands of years clans grew in power, fought, faded, and the cycle would repeat. Naturally competitive against themselves, they where constantly creating, inventing, perfecting, this pushed their culture forward in great strides.

War followed the Avarian’s into space, causing Clans to construct mighty war ships, each as beautiful and deadly as the next. It wasn’t until colonization of Mie that the clans became united.

Lord Tsu Xian diverted his attention from the colony world back to the home world, when his fleet arrived he began gathering support and quelling those who fought against him, with a majority of the Clan armies en-route to Mie this was a simple task. While the confrontation turned bloody Tsu Xian’s message was clear, no longer could they exist as many. In this age of space travel the Avarian people would have to become one, united, for the common good. They could not branch out into the galaxy and hope to survive if the threat of infighting and Cult feuds was an ever present danger, they must be strong to face the great unknown.

The war lasted fourteen years, though in that time very little fighting was actually done. The Tsu Xian offered something that was for the greater good, and his demands had been more than reasonable. A council of advisers, each clan would have their say, and a Ruling house to guide the decisions of a nation. When the final peace treaty was signed the war became known officially as the Last War of Sorrows, for no longer would the Tel’tsu cause their fellow Avarian sorrow. The Tel’tsu Commonwealth was formed.

As time progressed and technology improved the Tel’tsu colonized three moons in their system, they where reaching a golden age, though none knew the extent to which that age would stretch. Nearly 80 years after its founding the Commonwealth stumbled upon a Warp Gate on the far fringe of their home system space. This discovery solidified the unity that Tsu Xian had worked so hard to create.

With alien technology on their very door step the Commonwealth knew it must be ready to defend itself in the event that any they find on the other side might be hostile, so the great fleet was increased, mighty war ships were once again built in much grander scale than they had before. The mighty Tel’tsu Ship of the Commonwealth was commissioned six years after it’s approval, the mighty White ship boasted a bold Blue stripe off set down her spine. Upon completion of the Tel’tsu the Warp Gate was finally utilized, sending the Tel’tsu presence into their neighboring system.

Here they encountered their first sentient species. The “Mika”, though not an advanced culture, exhibited many social similarities with the Avarians, though much more war like. The Tel’tsu constructed a joint Colony/Naval Station orbiting the planet, this took twelve years to complete, during which time they learned to communicate with the Mika.

Four years later the Tel’tsu are negotiating possible client status of the Mika and preparing to delve deeper into the galaxy, curious as to what other races exist beyond the vast darkness around them.

So begins...

The Tel'tsu Commonwealth's Story
