Clarissa grew up in a broken family. Even before the divorce her family was always described as dysfunctional and that's because they were. Her parents would be arguing and yelling at all hours of the night, keeping Clarissa awake when she had school in the morning. This caused her to stop having friends over and she was never home during the day, even at night she found herself returning back home a few hours late after curfew because she didn't want to ever be home. This continued on until she was about sixteen when her parents finally divorced and her mother moved out of the house.
Now she always believed the endless drama would end there, but with her mother having joint custody of her her parents were always arguing about what was best for Clarissa. It even got to the point where Clarissa was now the messenger between them. She couldn't take all of the drama that was going on within her family. It all became too much. Finally she decided it would be easier for her to deal with all of the emotional pain she was receiving by harming herself. This is when she began to cut. She always turned to this form of harm because she wanted to be in control of the pain in her life and this was her only way to do it. Of course nobody ever seemed to find out about it, so she never had a reason to stop. Clarissa enjoyed the rush from the pain she received by cutting and it always seemed to draw her back like it were a drug.
Eventually the teenager had enough and just ran away at the age of seventeen and bunked with her best friend, Malia. She decided to continue staying there until she was able to get onto her own two feet. Not that Malia's parents minded because Clarissa practically lived there anyway. So it wasn't like much changed.
Clarissa did happen to find herself getting into a bit of trouble with the law. She was hanging out with the wrong crowd and was talked into robbing a convenient store and got caught in action by police. The seventeen year old was sent to juvenile detention for six months. In the middle of all this, she not once heard a single thing from her parents. It made her feel like they just gave up on her and no longer wanted anything to do with her. But maybe they were right to. All Clarissa ever brought to her parents was drama and problems, she was always the reason why they were at each other's throats all the time. With her out of their lives they were able to get on with their own in peace.
But while she was in juvenile detention she happened to meet a boy. The two of them hit it off immediately and it sprang up into much more than a friendship. Of course the small fling didn't last very long because once Clarissa was released to go back home she dropped all ties with Jamison. She never even told Malia about the fling because there really wasn't anything to tell. It meant nothing to her so why bring it up? Besides, the only person she ever had feelings for was the one person she could count on in her life, Malia. Sure the female didn't know anything about how Clarissa felt about it but maybe that was best for the both of them. Besides, Malia liked guys and it would only make their friendship awkward.
Like most teenagers, Clarissa continued on to college after graduating. She found herself continuing to hang out in the wrong crowds and eventually dragged Malia along. A few months into their sophomore year of college, Clarissa found out that Malia was doing drugs and she immediately felt at fault for it. If Clarissa hadn't dragged her to all these parties it never would have happened. That along with the fact that she loved Malia were the reasons why she did all she possibly could to bring Malia back to herself. Ever since Clarissa has been keeping a close eye on her hoping that she wouldn't have a relapse. Of course she wasn't able to keep an eye on her 24/7 because they both had their personal lives as well, but she did all she could to keep Malia away from the drugs.
