Adventures in New Terra

Adventures in New Terra

0 INK

Richview is a small town tucked away up in the mountains. Seemingly normal is almost every way, people have began to go missing without a trace.

837 readers have visited Adventures in New Terra since The Professor created it.

Introduction

Image
Image
This small mountain town remains hidden away from most of the world. While not a secret by any means, it's small population and being so far out of the way keeps most folks from ever paying this little town much attention. Normally a very peaceful town, something strange has been happening in this little town of Richview, people have been going missing over the past few months. Some vanishing in the dead of night, others simply vanishing while walking home in the middle of the day.

No one knows who might go missing next and the town has began to become unnerved.

Image

As the name might imply 'New Terra' was not the first Terra. Terra was the home world of the High Elves, a group of Magical adept Humanoids which tend to draw their power from the lighter Forces (not exclusively good magics, just primarily), and the Battle Thirsty Orcs, a group of war mongers who seek glory through conquest and unending battle. Their old World having been used up and scarred in an unending war, the Elves sought a new one to flee to so they might escape the Orcs whose quest for battle wouldn't end until their race was dead.

Image
The Elves of Terra in the old days were a Sophisticated Society built up on the idea of furthering their knowledge in the Arcane arts for the betterment of all races.. However those were the days before the war, back when the Elves had nothing to do with their immortal lives then to sit away in their towering spires and study the time away. Now the Elves spend much of their research time in trying to find was to put the fiendish Orcs and their allies down for good. The Elves thought they had found their 'out' of the war when they left old Terra behind for a new world, as the Orcs had very little knowledge of Magics they would have had no way of following them to this new world, or that is how things would have went before the Powerful Devils came out of the pits to make allies with the Orcs and give them the magics needed to follow the elves through and continue their war. Having been on New Terra now for close to a 100 years and have managed to thus far keep the Orcs from digging their 'claws' in deep on the planet but they never seem to keep them away for long before they start their war campaign yet again.

Image
Thought by many of the higher races to be no more intelligent then any other common beast, the Orcs of Terra are breed, raised, and all died for the soul purpose of War. Taught from birth that the only way they can ever reach their eternal peace is to die fighting honorably in battle. An Orc who dies of old age or sickness may never have peace in their life ever after. Ancient Scrolls from Old Terra say that the Orcs use to be peaceful nomadic race of Hunters and Gatherers only going to war to keep their lands from invaders - Elven Scholars still aren't sure what caused this dramatic change from their old ways to their modern War Mongering ways but so much time has past since those days of old, almost no one save the oldest of Elves even remember the Orcs as they once were.

Another perplexing mystery surrounding the Orcs is why the Devils have decided to pull themselves out of the Pits and begin to help the Orcs on their unending campaign for eternal war. Most simply believe they like the blood shed as much as the Orcs do - but this answer doesn't sit well with Elven High Council, because if that were the case they would have helped them earlier on in the war, but no real answer has yet to rear its head.

Image

The Dwarves are one of the few races who were truly Native to New Terra, however before the arrival of the Elves they had kept mostly to themselves, leave their Mountain Strongholds and vast underground caverns only to collect exotic supplies they could not find within their underground homes. They have, as a group, only started venturing out more onto the surface as the Orcs have began to raid more and more on their Mountain Strongholds. Trying to remove them from homes forever, they have sided with the Elves throughout the war on New Terra.

The Devils have made their presence a more and more common site on New Terra then it ever was in the old world. Their vastly diverse appearance and mostly unknown (to the Elves ) magics make it hard to determine were and who they might be. Some appear in the more traditional sense - Red Skin, long tail, pointed horns - but some might look just like an Elf but with glowing red eyes, something easily disguised with magic. What they want and what they are willing to do to get it- no one can be for sure just yet.

Image
Although not truly Native to New Terra, Humans have been found on the plant since before the arrival of the Elves. Their presents on the planet has never been a very large one - mostly they remain in small groups spread out all over the surface of the planet. They remain in mostly tribal like organization, although small groups have developed further than that, some even to the point of forming small countries with rapidly developing armies of their own (as it has been needed to defend off Orcish armies).

Image
Many other races make up the population of New Terra - Satyrs, Gnomes, Merfolk, Gnolls, Catfolk, and the list goes on- how will their presents change the out come of this war- and with new people now arriving on the planet, what will they do to change the tides of war? Will they aid the Elves in stopping the never ending War Machine, or will they help the Orcs to plunge the plant (and ever other planet to come before them) into eternal war?

The air was crisp and slightly chilled this morning. Not an unusual morning in the little town of Richview by any accounts. The normal 'morning rush' had already began in the center of town, as people walked back and forth to work, to school, to the store - where ever they had to be that morning.

Image The Street Side Cafe, a small coffee shop, sits just down main street. Despite the large influx of people moving about the town, no one seemed to be moving in or out of the small shop, just a few people sit inside. The Barista thumbed through his news paper, leaning against the counter as a look of boredom overcomes his face. An elderly couple sit in the back corner, the old man looking out the window at the passers by, the old woman reading over her paperback novel. Some young, would be novelist, typing away on her computer as she works on her latest inspiration - and sitting at a table in the middle of the room is David Smith. His head down, a hand placed on the back of his neck, and a coffee in his hand. His head hurt - then again, after how much he had drank the night before, he would be more worried if it hadn't.

Taking a long, slow sip from his coffee - David knew he had over done it, but it wasn't like it was his usual night out. It had been his 'moving in' party, he had the right to drink... then again he probably should have stopped once his new neighbors had left for the evening. His dark brown hair remained uncombed, he still hadn't even looked in a mirror today let alone attend to any grooming habits.

The ring of the stores front door bell would pull his attention as he looked up to see a couple walk in together. Both seemed rather distraught - the woman having clearly been crying recently, and while he couldn't be sure the mans eyes didn't look untouched either. The two walk up to the counter, the woman handing the barista a flyer.

" Could you please hang this up... I-Its a missing poster of our son... We haven't been able to find him in three days and the police aren't doing anything about it. " Says the woman, trying to hold back any new tears. " Please.. he's only fifteen, we have to find him! " The barista nodded, taking the flyer only to hang it up on a pin board behind the counter along with several other 'missing persons' flyers - all ranging over the past year.

David hadn't noticed the board before now, it wasn't something he would expect to find in such a small town, but he was still really new to town, so he wasn't really sure WHAT to expect just yet.

Aurelia Nicholls

Aurelia was running down the main street heading towards the office that was at the end of the road. She was late from work, again. She spend hours every night just thinking about the disappearings in town. There was so many questions open. Why no one saw anything? Why there was nothing in common in victims? Why there was no pattern of any sort? "Good morning Aurelia!" a man across the street shouted waking her up from her thoughts. Aurelia waved her hand "Have a nice day mister Wilson!"

Her hair was still messy, she had just put them into a ponytail. It wasn't rare sight to see her at this time of the morning running half-asleep with unbrushed hair and no make up. She usually take care of those when she arrived at the office. Almost everyone who had lived in town more than a month knew that. It was a small town after all.

Like every morning she stepped inside the cafe. "Morning miss Nicholls" the barista greeted her. "Morning, the usual one" Aurelia answered and then noticed the couple and the new flyer as well. It was part of her morning routine. Getting herself a cup of coffee that she would drink in her way to work and checking the new missing posts.

She gave couple of dollars to the barista that handed her a big cup of coffee and then turned towards the couple. "Is that boy your son?" she asked friendly. "I'm Aurelia Nicholls, I work in View. If you want I can ask the editor add your missing post to the news paper as well." Aurelia spoke in quiet, caring voice. There was already two pages of the paper dedicated only for those who had disappeared.

"Oh! Oh Thank you! That would help us so much!" exclaims the woman, tears of joy beginning to run down her face. Her husband trys to take Aurelia's hand. "We were starting to give up hope, especially with all the other missing people... We're just so glad to see someone still helping. " He says while trying to shake her hand.

Image David sat up at his table as he heard the group at the counter talk. How common were these disappearances he wondered. This wasn't the big city, that's where people go missing and never turn up, not out here in a small town like this. He had to learn more. Slowly standing up from his stable, he took a few steps towards the group gathered at the counter.

"Uuh-.. Excuse me. " He said, interrupting their conversation. " Hi, yeah... I'm David.. New in town.. I was just curious, um.. How common are these disappearances? " He asked looking between the four of them, hoping someone would answer his question.

Aurelia smiled as the man shook her hand. "Of course I help. I truly hope you find your son soon"

"Uuh-.. Excuse me. Hi, yeah... I'm David.. New in town.. I was just curious, um.. How common are these disappearances?" Aurelia turned towards him. "Welcome to town David. Hopefully you enjoy your time here." she greeted him offering her hand. "I'm Aurelia Nicholls. And I'm late from work.."

"Like every morning" the barista laughed interrupting her.

"Eh, yes... So what I was saying I should be going, but if you want I can fill you the details on the way. The office is just at the end of the road."

David too the womans hand, giving her a quick shake before the barista interrupted.

"Like every morning" The Barista laughed. David looked over the cafe employee, not seeing the humor in such a thing. He nodded lightly. " ... Thanks.. " He said coldly, not amused.

"Eh, yes... So what I was saying I should be going, but if you want I can fill you the details on the way. The office is just at the end of the road." said the woman, David turning his attention towards her.

" Thank you! Just.. Let me grab my coat. " He says walking back over to his table, grabbing up his light Jacket before following her out the door. He sipped his coffee as he followed her, keeping up with her stride.

" I gotta say.. I'm kinda surprised to hear about.. ANY disappearances around here... This just seems like an odd thing for such a small town, don't you think? "

Aurelia nodded answering David's question walking out of the cafe door heading towards the office coffee in her hand. "That's not even the oddest part. What's odd that no one sees anything. The police had found no clues. There's no clear pattern behind these disappearances. The victims have disappeared during the day and night. Their age has been from 14 to 58. Both woman and males has vanished without no one seeing a thing."

She took few sips from the cup and continued. "And as you might see from all the missing posters on the board they're far too common in here. Let's see, the total is no 23. No. 24 counting that kid who has disappeared just now. At first there was one or two in month but now it's became more and more common. During last two weeks five persons has been announced missing. I'm afraid that the true number is even higher. Living alone in here at the time like this isn't a good thing..."

They had arrived in front of the office building and Aurelia drink some more coffee. "Everyone's living pretty much in fear..." she said quietly.

" Well then... " He says, looking away as he runs a hand up and down the back of his hair. " That would have been ... NICE to know.. before I moved here by myself. " David says looking at Aurelia with a half smile. " So no one has any real theories as to who would be doing this? .. No.... FBI or CIA or whoever coming to ... look into all these strange and sudden disappearances? "

Taking another sip from his coffee, he looks around for a moment, only now really noticing they had been stopped for several seconds. " Oh! ... This must be you're work! " He starts to take a few steps backwards, his eyes never leaving her. " I guess... I'll leave you to it then.. "

"Moved here by yourself?" Aurelia repeated. "Then you should ask your neighbours to look after you. That's how most of us work in here now days. I live alone too, but the guy next door, as well as that cafe barista, have said that if they don't see me every day, they'll go announce me as missing person."

Finishing her cafe and throwing the paper cup to the nearby bin, she continued. "And answer to your question, there's seven different theories, from government that's trying to destroy the town to aliens. If you're interested, come inside. I'm in charge of this case. I have written most of the news and those weird theories related to disappearances. I can find the old papers if you want to read them.”

ImageWith that said Aurelia stepped inside the office building. "Morning
Chris, morning Lauren, morning Eleanor." she greeted her colleagues
handing over a flyer of the missing boy to other woman. ”New one”
Aurelia said sadly. Then she turned around to see if David had followed
her.

Image "Na... The Government would have just hired the aliens to do their dirty work, and the aliens are only interested in buying property these days - " he says, clearly joking.

David stood at the doorway for a moment, looking into the office building with curious eyes. His initial reaction was to say something along the lines of 'sorry I have to be somewhere' ... but that would be a complete lie. It's not like he really had anything else to be doing right now.

" Uuh- Sure! " He finally said, replying to her offer to let him read the old papers. Stepping into the office building, still clinching onto his half drank coffee. He follows behind Aurelia, his eyes wondering around the office as his curiosity takes control. He smiles at a few people as the glance up from their work, noticing the stranger in their work place.

Image " Hey... Aurelia! .. W-Wait one second!" Says a voice from the other side of the office. It was an older man, currently trying to rush his coversation on the phone as he just keeps saying 'uhuh.. Yeah... Yeah.. Yes... Uhuh'.

Mathew Wallberg, one of the editors on the paper, Hanging up the phone he quickly came walking up towards her, a slight frown covering his face as he approaches.

" Did you hear? Abby went missing last night.. " He says very somber voice. Abby had been a photographer on the paper, often one of the first ones to an event or accident to snap a few shots for the next days paper. Still only 16 she lived with her papers and siblings - meaning someone would have noticed her disappearance rather quickly.

" Get this... She apparently went missing from her second story bathroom... They found her shower running and everything. It's like she just... 'poofed' vanished without a trace - How bizarre is that!? " He says, still in an almost 'unbelieving' state.

" At this rate, the whole damn towns gonna vanish in a puff of smoke, without some much as a single eye witness! " He exclaims, rubbing his brow .

Aurelia stared Mathew for a while before she realized what he was just said. ”No...No. NO!” Aurelia fell sitting on a chair. Tears started to fall down her cheeks. ”Why...Why her....” Next she felt someone's arms around her. When she rose her head, she saw Eleanor hugging her and gently petting her back. She knew how close the two of them had been. They were the youngest journalists in the paper after all. A-A-team as they were called.

But Aurelia knew something the others didn't. She and Abby had found something when they had been investigating a small mountain path that was popular among joggers. Apparently many of the victims had disappear when walking there. They had found a ring. Of course they had taken the ring to the police, but they didn't care about it. They had said someone had just dropped it when walking there.

ImageHowever, A-A-team had their suspicions. The ring was too fancy to be someone's who lived in Richview. It was golden, had a large square shaped ruby and detailed ornaments around it. Abby had taken few photos of it and then the girls had taken it back where they had found it. At the next day the ring wasn't there.

”I'll go there” she said quietly. She wanted to see if the photos were still in Abby's room.

Image Mathews frown deepened as Aurelia began to cry. As Eleanor began to hug her, Mathew would place a hand on her shoulder. He would rub her shoulder reassuringly as he crouched down to try and get to her eye level.

"Hey! Hey! Listen... We don't know what's happened to anyone who's gone missing yet. They could all just as easily show back up tomorrow- plus you know Abby- she's adventures .. Maybe she just snuck out of her house to try and do a little digging - she could show up in a few hours or something. " He said in a calm voice. " Just don't give up hope - alright. Whatever you do.. Don't do that." As he finished talking, the phone back as his desk began to rang again. With a deep sigh Mathew left Aurelia's side to go answer his phone.

David stood close to Aurelia the whole time - clearly in a bit of a shock as this events unfolds around him. As Mathew walked away, David would start to pat her on the back.

" I'm sure.. Uhh.. She'll be alright. " He said, clearly just trying to be helpful - but he had no idea to be honest. This was one of the wildest things he'd ever heard of happening - Nothing like this had ever happened in the big city let alone this far away from one. " If there's anything I do do to help... "

She flashed a slight, ”I'm trying to look hopeful”-smile when Mathew was talking to her. ”Yes...Abby is fine. She has to be...”

I'm sure.. Uhh.. She'll be alright. Aurelia heard David's voice. She rise her head and looked at him. She had already forgotten he was there.

”Um...I don't know... if there's anything... you can do...” Aurelia was still sobbing. ”But thanks.” She rose up and Eleanor hugged her once again before going back to work. Aurelia wiped out the last tears. ”I'm going to her house. She deservers her own article. And as I promised you can see the older articles about these disappearances. Chris?” she talked to man who seemed to be in his thirties. ”Could you find the articles for David. He's new in town.”

”Sure.” Chris nodded and went to a large cupboard and started to find news papers.

Image David sat down with a large stack of newspapers that were handed to him by Chris.

"Thanks.. " David said to him, before Chris nodded and walked off. He flipped though a few of the pages, spending a few minutes reading about some of the people who went missing and various theories from a serial kidnapper to alien abductions. As he read on, he finished the last of his coffee - only noticing as he went for another sip only to find it empty. He turned back to look at Aurelia.

" From what I read... everyone who has gone missing were alone at the time.. but some where less then a 100 feet from someone else.. Some people went missing when they simply walked into the bathroom.. This is ... the Wildest thing I've ever heard of.. "

He turned back to pick up a news paper. " The first person to go missing - this... Jack Wilder.. He was some kind of expert on legends and the occult ... did you know the guy? "

Aurelia shook her head. ”Not really. He preferred to be alone. I think someone made an article about him. Last year. When he did new research. Ask Chris or someone to find it if you like.”

With that said, she waved her hand and left to Abby's house. She came to her house and knocked the door. After a while Abby's older brother came to open it. His eyes were slightly red, he had been crying. Aurelia patted his shoulder (which was hard since he was much taller than Aurelia). ”Can I go?” she asked pointing towards upstairs. He nodded, and went to kitchen to talk with his mother.

Aurelia walked upstairs. First she went to bathroom. The shower was shut down, but everything else were still there. Abby's clothes was in a pile on the floor, the small window was slightly open. ”Wait. Open?” Aurelia walked over the window. It really was open. But it was too small for anyone to go through it. Besides the bathroom was in the second floor. No one would be able to climb there.

Seeing nothing else weird, Aurelia went to Abby's room. Luckily the door wasn't locked. She walked over to desk and opened the bottom drawer. She went trough papers Abby hold in there. Looking for the four photos she had taken. They weren't there. Aurelia sat down staring the empty drawer trying not to cry anymore. ”Abby...” she whispered quietly.

David read on a little bit more about this 'Jack Wilder' - before he would ask to borrow a phone book. Thumbing through he would find this 'Jack Wilder's phone number and address. Maybe someone had already looked into the guy - but David had to see for himself.

"Thanks guys - Next time I'll bring the doughnuts!" He says as he darted out the door - stealing a doughnut off the a front table as he rushed out.

'Maybe this whole 'disappearance' thing was just some kind of prank they pull on new people around town.. ' He thought to himself as he walked down the street, realizing rather quickly how stupid that sounded. 'What am I even gonna do when I get to this guys house? If no ones there to let me in, am I gonna risk breaking in, and if there is someone there do I really think someones gonna let me in? Yes.. Hello - I'm a complete stranger new in town, and would like to look over this missing guys stuff'.

As he arrived at the address, a moderate sized home on the far side of town - David walked up to the door. Newspapers were stacked up against the front door and the grass left un-mowed... no one had been here in some time.. not even family to come take care of the house after the man went missing. 'Well... breaking in it his..'

As Aurelia sat in Abby's room - there would come a light knocking on the door. A moment later, it would slowly open to reveal Abby's father, Tom.

"Hey.. " He says, giving her a forced smile. " thought you might be by at some point.. " He speaks softly, clearly having been upset himself - but had tried to keep himself together for everyone else in the house. " You... wanna come down and have a little bit to eat? ... "

Aurelia heard a knock from the door and turned around. " You... wanna come down and have a little bit to eat? ... " It was Tom. ”Oh? Well. I...I don't want to bother you.” she said quietly.

She rose up, straightening her clothes. She glanced herself at the mirror Abby had in her her room. Then she realized it. She had left in hurry so her hair was still messy and she was without make up. Her eyes were still red from crying. She looked awful in her opinion.

Aurelia looked back at Tom again. ”Umm...I was thinking I could do an article about Abby if that's okay? I think she deserves it.” Not every missing person got their own article to the newspaper. First of all, not everyone was that interesting and secondly it was one way to avoid panic in the town. Thought that panic had already spread.
