Introduction

Protection.
With excess beauty comes unwanted attention, and aside from the masses of tourists and merchants flooding the island, Agathya is attracting attention from powerful countries around it. There's no army, no defense line and no iron wall big or strong enough to prevent bigger and stronger countries from coming in and taking over the land in it's entirety. There are rumors of wars and invasions and not enough time to prepare for them. The king's only choice is to form alliances with nearby countries. With this purpose in mind, the king plans to marry off his 21 year old daughter and 20 year old son to the son and daughter of two powerful kings, thus ensuring the protection of Agathya and it's people. It all seems to be going well. His son and daughter are in agreement, and are willing to make the sacrifice for the safety of the country and their people. Of course, things don't always go about as planned. When the king formulated his strategy, he didn't expect his daughter and bride to be to fall in love with a simple and poor country boy instead of her fiancΓ©, nor did he count on his daughter's fiancΓ© to fall in love with her younger brother instead. Something that's strongly looked down upon in such a conservative country.

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 2 authors

The castle is silent, that is until the moment he takes a step out of his bedroom. The tall, French baroque doors slam shut, echoing in and out of every corner of the structure. His father's voice follows merely seconds after. "Romano, Alessia! Come see me immediately." his thundering voice has a sense of urgency to it, more so than usual.
"Good morning to you too, father" the boy catches his father's call on his way down the large, gold accented steps, and presents himself front and center, usual playful smile in place. "Did something happen?". There's a short pause between the two. The king appears to be considering his next words carefully as if to not alarm him, meanwhile the young prince watches, the misplaced feeling from before still in place. "No" the King answers firmly, then wavers. "Not yet".
Not yet. Implying that something will, which means that the misplaced discomfort was not so misplaced after all.
"I have an important announcement to make. Where is your sister?". An announcement that requires both prince and princess to be present is unusual. Alessia, as the oldest of the two as well as the most fit to rule a country, is normally the only one needed to be present. The King entrusts her with important tasks, and she never fails to carry them out to the utmost perfection. She's cunning, wise, responsible, everything needed and expected of a queen. Romano is nothing like her. He's too quiet, too naΓ―ve, too common.

She'd been out with Matias, they hadn't been doing anything so scandalous but she was Crowned Princess, heir to the throne, she should not be seen with the local florist...so she made sure not to be seen. Alessia turned over in her bed, dreaming of the next time she'd get to see her beloved Matias, and his contagious smile when her handmaiden came rushing in. Her eyes sprang open and she sat up straight, her dark hair spilling down her shoulders like a cloak.
"What is it?" She asked with a start, her hand on her chest. "Your Father, the King, Principessa, He wants to see you." said the handmaiden, Lina, a woman who was an aging beauty, and had it not been for her wrinkles, and white hair that was swept up in a bun and mostly hidden by a bonnet, she would have looked like Alessia's sister. Alessia sighed, dropping her shoulders.
"Can't it wait?" She asked, Lina, and the woman gave her a knowing look. "You should have gotten to bed earlier." she said as she pulled back the blankets to help the princess out of the massive bed. Alessia gave her a smirk, to which she was rewarded with a swat on the thigh. Lina had been with Alessia for a long while, and treating her much like a mother after hers passed so while they were alone, Lina was awarded the informality.
"I know, but I just can't help, Lina, I loss all track of time when I'm with him." Alessia smiled, climbing out of bed, standing straight so that Lina could remove her nightdress and pull on first her underskirts, then her corset. "That is all you lost, hm?" Lina asked from behind her, lacing her corset and Alessia laughed, but blushed. "Just time, Lina, just time." She said and Lina smiled. "Alright, Let's hurry, perhaps you could sleep a little later on?" She said and Alessia smiled, as Lina pulled on a lovely pale blue dress embroidered with gold roses and vines, it hugged her body but kept her modest all the same. Alessia turned to Lina and gave her two quick kisses to either cheek. "Thank you, Lina." She said and Lina merely smiled. "Go, before your father has your head." She said and Alessia dashed off, though it was quiet ladylike. She hurried, never rushed.
She took a breath before entering the room, trying to look rested and regal. She kept her back straight, her chin high, and her hands rest in front of her as the doors were opened for her.
"Good Morning, Father." She said, with a bow. "Good Morning, Romano." She said, but couldn't hide the question in that. Their father usually called one of them at a time, not both. The last time this had happened, the message was not good news.
"Is everything alright, Father?" She asked, as she entered, her father having waved her in. She stood next to Romano and gave him a soft frown and a cock of her head as if to say, What's going on?
All of this while their father paced. Alessia felt the urge to grab her brother's hand, but she didn't. Queens did not do such things.

"Good Morning, Father." Alessia gracefully walked in, immediately filling up the room with that elegant and regal aura that she carried everywhere she went. Romano watched her silently. It was a wonder how two siblings from the same mother and father, just over a year apart in age, could be so different. "Good Morning, Romano." the question in her tone was crystal clear. She was just as baffled by the current situation as he was. The two exchanged a look, as they usually did in odd situations, telling one another everything without the need of a single word.
"What's the purpose of those looks" of course, their father too could tell they were worried for what might be coming. "I come to you today with great news!" the King exclaimed, a satisfied smile plastered on his face as if he had just found the answer to all of his prayers. And perhaps he had. "Some very special guests are coming today. King and Queen Dashkov will be here this afternoon with their eldest son to discuss future plans and wedding details". There was a short silence while Romano replayed in his head what their father had just announced. Romano had heard that name before. They were a very well known and powerful family. The family name alone was enough to strike anyone with fear. A quick glance over to his older sister said it all. This was the first she was hearing of this as well. The king didn't mention specifics, but they could both take an educated guess. "You gave the prince Lessi's hand in marriage". It was meant to be a question, but it sounded more like a confirmation of what he already knew was true.
"I've already spoken to the Prince himself. He's a fine young gentleman. I'm sure you two will get along splendidly once you get to know one another." he explains as he turns his attention to Alessia, not bothering to respond to Romano's statement. He gives them both a reassuring smile before continuing on. "The future and safety of our kingdom depends on this marriage, so please be on your utmost perfect behavior." Though he's talking to both of them, the young prince can feel the second half of the statement directed more towards him than towards his sister.

Matias wasn't the type to be late to anything. He always had a set schedule to make sure everything his sister needed was taken care of, after which he'd take care of anything needed at the house or the flower shop. Usually, he'd get everything finished in time for bed, to get a good night's rest and start all over again the following day. However, the night before had been far from the usual, and he could tell Dina had caught on, apparent from the smug look on her face that morning. "You were up all night with her again, weren't you?" she had asked him on their way to the school. Matias opted out of giving her an answer. She already knew, and he knew Dina would never tell. She cared for Alessia almost as much as he did. "Be a good girl today, si?" he had sent her off into class before continuing on his way to the shop. It was now five minutes past the usual time he opened. If he took any longer, the locals would begin to worry.
"Buongirno!" he bowed slightly, enthusiastically greeting a few of the older locals as they walked by him on his way inside.

"How could he do this to me.....He didn't even tell me...." She sobbed into her brother's shoulders, tears moistening his clothes. "I can't be married, I just can't." She sobbed, clutching to her brother as if he was the other thing keeping her upright and stable.Which wasn't far from the truth.

"Of course, Father."
Romano immediately turned to look at his sister. She was not okay with this, but as always was willing to make the sacrifice. "But Lessi-"
Once again, he was interrupted. She sounded stable and ready for what was to come, but Romano knew her better than that. Once they were out of their father's sight and far enough to not be heard, she let out all the frustration he knew she had been struggling to hide. She sobbed silently, and the prince felt helpless. There was virtually nothing he could do for her. Their father hadn't even thought to consult her about this before making a decision. Had he mentioned it sooner, Romano would have fought him tooth and nail to stop it. "I can't be married, I just can't." the prince knew why. His sister would be willing to do anything for the safety of her people, but this was a sacrifice he was not going to let her make. The young prince didn't know that kind of love, nor did he understand why people fell in and out of it. He had never been in love nor did he plan to any time soon, but he vaguely knew what love was and what it entailed from reading about it in books. That was more than enough for him.
"I know...I know." there was really nothing else he could say to her now. In fact, she was not the one he needed to be talking to. "It'll be okey" he assured her. There was a small probability that the king would listen, but the prince was determined to at least try. Once she had calmed down a bit, Romano gently cup her wet cheeks. The disheartened look on her face nearly broke his heart, but it gave him that last small push he needed. "I'll talk to father " he stated decisively, gently placing a kiss on her forehead. "And I'll kick out that prince Dashkah-whatever his name is back to where he came from.". It may have sounded like a simple joke, but the young prince was willing and determined to do it. He'd do anything for his sister's happiness, regardless of the consequences.
Looking at the time, there were still several hours until the infamous Dashkov family arrived. The first thing the prince had to do was have a talk with their father. He could consider and decide how to take care of this prince afterwards.

"It's a nice thought, Ro, but there's not use...Father has made up his mind, no amount of talking about it will change a thing...." She said and sighed, sadness shuddering her chest as she turned down the hall, morosely walking toward her chambers. She couldn't bring her self to do anything but curl on to her bed, close her eyes and cry. She needed to get this out of her system before the Prince arrived. She would need all of her faculties to navigate this, as well as figure out how she was to break the heart of the love of her life...

The heavy double doors were opened for him and shut again with an echoing thud. At the center of the room stood the mighty king, still pacing as he had been earlier while the siblings were in his presence. "You could have at least talked to her about it first". The prince had no plan in mind, no strategy, no hope of succeeding, only frustration. It wouldn't get him very far, he knew that. A sigh escaped through the king's lips as he slowly turned to face his son. This was not the first time Romano came to him with complaints, and it would most certainly not be the last. "It was necessary. You know our nation is vulnerable. We need the protection" Perhaps he was right, but this wasn't the way to go about things. "Then marry me instead". There was an odd sound following Romano's suggestion. It almost sounded like a laugh of sorts. "You want me to give the prince your hand in marriage instead?" the king appeared to be very pleased with his tasteless joke. Romano was not, by any means. "This isn't a time for jokes, father" the king's lips morphed into a sharp line. "You're absolutely right, so stop wasting my time". And that was that. The conversation was finished. The king decreed it so, and Romano was left alone in an empty, silent room. As expected, talking to his father got him nowhere, but the young prince had not given up. Far from it. He would get this engagement canceled one way or the other.

Her eyes closed at at thought, forcing tears down her hair. The thought of him with another woman made her stomach lurched and her heart ache. She didn't want that. She loved him. She would tell him, she decided then, but that wouldn't change a thing.
She spirited out of hte castle, being sure to avoid that guards most loyal to her father, and made her way to the city square. The Sun had the nerve to be bright, not a single cloud in the sky. She only wished it would storm, so it could match the feeling in her heart.
"Morning, Princess" She was called to from merchants and vendors as she passed. She could only managed a fake smile and a nod, though a few childern ran up to her, asking her to play. She usually did.
"Not today, little ones." she told them sweetly, trying to force the tears to stay. Childern were perceptive little creatures, as they all seem to know something was wrong. "Are you alright, Princess?"
"Are you sad?"
Alessia smiled sadly. No she was not alright, yes, she was sad. She couldn't tell them that. I have a bit of business, run along now." she told them and managed to disentangle them from her. This was much harder then she thought.
The closer she got to the flower shop, the heavier her heart had become. She wanted to say she wouldn't let anyone stand in the way of their love, but that would be a lie. Alessia was cunning, but she was never a liar.
She ducked inside, finding the familiar warmth almost suffocating knowing what she was going to have to say. She took a breath and called out.
"Mathias? Mathias, are you there?"

"You look tired today, mio bambino, is something troubling you?". Mathias turns to look at the elderly woman, Signora Telli, who stops by once a day just to check up on him. She has been doing so ever since his parents passed away. The boy smiles with a light shake of the head. "No signora, I'm just tired" he says, stifling the yawn that follows. The woman surveys him from head to toe before her soft lips curl into a warm smile. "Ah, I see. You're in love, aren't you boy?". Mathias is always amazed by the woman's perceptive nature. How she manages to pick up on things so easily is beyond him. "No, no" he insists, a nervous smile taking over his features, but the woman doesnβt appear to be very convinced. "Honestly I just didn't sleep very well" he adds, hoping she don't question things any further. Signora Telli doesn't seem satisfied, but much to his relief she lets the subject drop, assuring him that she would be back the next day as usual. After her departure, the shop suddenly felt empty again. For several minutes no one came inside, so Matias decided to venture towards the back and check on the plants.
"Mathias? Mathias, are you there?" the Spanish boy stops everything he's doing, immediately recognizing the voice calling out to him. He would recognize that voice anywhere. He stepped through the thin floral curtains and couldn't contain the smile once he saw the princess' face. Of course, maintaining appearances was important, so he resisted the urge to pull her into his arms as he always does. "Your highness" he says with a soft bow and smile, knowing that anyone that passes by can see them through the glass doors. "What brings you here so early?" They had parted ways a couple of hours ago, so it was a bit strange that she had come back, but Mathias didn't mind. He loved seeing her face and he would love to see it at every waking moment if he could.

"Good morning young prince! I haven't seen you in several days" Romano came to a slow stop in front of one of his favorite vendors, taking one of the pears from the basket and offering the woman a smile. "Good morning Belinda, did you miss me?" he says lightheartedly, taking a small bite of the pear and reaching into his pocket to give the woman what he owes. "Oh no, no mi nino, you know you don't need to do that-" he insists, but as always, Romano refuses. "And you know I never listen" he chuckles, placing the money in the woman's hands. "Besides, this pear is extra delicious today" he adds, reaching over for another to take back home. Not a second after he grabs it, the fruit rolls out of his hand, onto the ground, rolling a few feet away. Before the prince can reach it, someone has already picked it up for him. Romano briefly surveys, a foreigner, no doubt about. If the blonde hair and blue eyes aren't enough of a giveaway, how he is dressed certainly is. Not that it's surprising. Agathya is always filled from foreigners from all over Europe. "Pardon me" he says with an apologetic smile, remembering to be kind and courteous to all newcomers.
