Welcome to The City. It's a city where the police officers work with superheroes and attempt to control the villains. But in this city, the civilians aren't perfectly happy with that. They don't like the idea of these "goddamn mutants" running around and being able to do whatever the hell they want. Sure, they'll cry out for them when they're in trouble, but when they're safe, their opinions change.

So when someone offers to get rid of them for once and for all, most people don't dare ask questions. As the heroes do, they decide to engage in civil negotiations with this man. Maybe some sort of arrangement can be come to. But someone in the "villainous" team gets inside information. It turns out that the other side doesn't intend on engaging in civil negotiation with the heroes- they intend on kidnapping them.

At first, the villains don't do anything, expecting the heroes to break themselves out of it. But then, that doesn't happen. Instead, they actually do get captured. A few escape. Some get recaptured.

One, however, does escape and goes into hiding. She hears whispers of villains, villains that are smart enough to stay out of the public eye. Smart enough not to get caught. She does some research and finds the name of one, one who has been known to offer themselves out as a mercenary, a master thief for hire. She decides to ask them for help... But can a hero and a villain ever really co-operate?

Max had just finished with the bacon and eggs, as the bread popped from the toaster and Willow walked up beside her. Max found herself smiling as she walked over to the small table by the window to place the plates. "Mornin' Sleeping Beauty," She said jokingly. She filled two mugs with the coffee brew and placed that at the head of the places as well as some silver ware to the side. Then she went to her medicine cabinet and pulled out a bottle of Advil and placed held it out for Willow to take. "There's no way you're no sore so take a couple of these and you should be good for the day."

She sat down in her usual seat that faced the north side of town and left the seat facing the south for Willow. She munched on a bit of bacon and moaned happily. "Oh man, I love bacon." Then she took a drink of the coffee, the warm spreading through her. "Sorry it's so early, but I had to get ready to go to work." Max gestured towards the couch with her half strip of bacon. "If you need to rest more, you're free to stay for the day. If you do leave, just lock the lower lock from the inside and you're okay to go." Then she gestured to Willow's ankle. "How's it feel?"

Willow sighed with relief as Max handed her some painkillers, and downed them in one with a mouthful of her coffee. β€œBless you,” she said. β€œCoffee and painkillers, just what a girl needs.” She sat down and started eating, having to stop herself from moaning. Usually eggs and bacon wasn’t something she felt particularly strongly about, but it was exactly what she was craving, and the coffee tasted amazing. β€œThis is really good,” she said.

She shrugged as Max said she had to go to work. β€œNah, I’m the same, I’ve got to show up to work at some point today. They aren’t too fussy about when I show up as long as I do show up. And I also need to change. Can’t be showing up to work in the same clothes I was seen in yesterday, my co-workers will be gossiping,” she said, having to resist the temptation to wink. It was more of a natural instinct than anything else. And perhaps if they’d met under different circumstances, Willow would have been flirtatious, would have bought her a drink, maybe would have gone there. But not now. Wrong circumstances, wrong... everything.

β€œMy ankle’s fine. Bit sore, but the painkillers haven’t kicked in yet, and I’ve dealt with worse. Should be able to walk on it, although I don’t think I’ll be wearing my heels to work today,” she remarked. She was used to heels and used to pain, but combining the two was just asking for trouble that she just did not want to deal with.

Max smiled shyly. "Thanks, but they're nothing special. Honestly, my secret is shredded Mexican cheese." To demonstrate her genius, she picked up a fork full of cheese eggs and stretched it so the strings thinned. "You put a little in when you mix and then a little more when you're cooking them." She smiled as she explained. Then she ate the fork full of eggs followed by sipping on some of her coffee. Then she lifted her mug and explained, "This coffee is the absolute best though. It's chocolate and caramel coffee. I saw it and had to give it a shot and I think it's my go to now."

Max sighed, finishing her eggs. "Actually," She smiled softly, "I have to work all three of my jobs today. Its the one rare occurrence where I'm scheduled for all of them. Eight to ten at the clinic," She played with her cheesy eggs. "Then I have to work at the music shop from twelve to five thirty. Then I work at Chelsea's Bar over on third for the remainder of the night." She took a deep breath. Finished her eggs and nibbled on her bacon. "Well they put the bread on the table right?"

She gestured to her ankle with the half strip of bacon. "I can take a look at that if you'd like. See if it's any better. Maybe wrap it tighter if you need me to. I'm sure you can do it on your own, but distal extremities--uh that is, your feet--tend to be a little difficult to manage on you own." She finished her bacon and munched on her toast. "And I definitely wouldn't suggest heels. I have some shoes you can borrow assuming we're the same size. That way you don't have to walk to your apartment barefoot in these streets."

When she finished her food, she brought her plate into the kitchen and placed it in the sink. Then she finished her coffee and placed her mug in the sink. "Where's your apartment? You don't have to give me a specific location or anything, just a ballpark."

Willow raised her eyebrows as Max mentioned having to work three jobs. And then there was Willow, only really working so she would have something to do, so she could learn more about the science behind her ability. She wondered what type of person she would be now if she had had to put herself through college like that, if she hadn't had the money her parents had left. Sure, she'd always worked hard. When she'd first started out as a villain, she'd had to work as a waitress on her off nights to put herself through college. But once she'd gotten successful, she'd been able to leave that all behind her.

She shrugged as Max offered to check her ankle for her. "Go ahead, doc, it might be an idea. I promise, though, I'm pretty good at taking care of my wounds. Can't be out of commission for any longer than necessary, and not taking proper care of your injuries is just asking for trouble." She nodded at Willow's offer to borrow some shoes. They seemed to be roughly the same height, so her shoes would probably fit. Maybe not as well as her own, but it would be a start.

She finished up her own food a little after Willow, but continued to drink her coffee in peace. "You know where the university is? Well, if you drew a straight line between here and there, my apartment is just a little to the west of that line. I'm about a fifteen minute walk away from the university." It was a nice part of town, which was nice for when she worked a little too late and had to walk home in the dark.

Max noted Willow's perfectly arched eyebrow and shrugged. "I guess I'm not a very good villain." And left it at that. She rinsed off the plates and rinsed out her mug before placing them in the dishwasher as well as the pan that she used to cook the eggs. The pan for the bacon was allowed to soak in soapy water. That way the grease wouldn't stick to the pan as much.

When she finished she returned to the table and knelt down in front of Willow to inspect her ankle. Her ears, face, and neck flushed fiercely when Willow called her "Doc". Was she that easy to read? Was it that obvious that this is what she really wanted to do? That this was really the hero she wanted to be? How there were nights she cursed herself for not being born with a healing ability, but a sonic one instead? She shook away the barrage of thoughts and went to inspect the ankle. The swelling had gone down significantly, which was a good sign. In the end, Max decided not to rewrap it and just let it heal instead. "Well the swelling has gone down a lot, but I still don't recommend the heels. I do have a pair of boots you could probably borrow. They're a little worn. Ok a lot worn, but the soles are still good and it'll reinforce your ankle nicely." She stood, brushing imaginary dust from her clothes and made her way to her bedroom, listening to Willow give a direction to her apartment.

Max found the boots tucked into the back of her closet and returned with them and a smile. "I actually have to head that way to get to the clinic. I'll go with you. If you don't mind." Max rubbed at the back of her neck absently and ruffled the loose strands of her hair a little. "Honestly, I just want to be sure you make it back safely and that the junk in your system has completely worked it's way out." She held up her hands defensively. "I won't even walk with you all the way. Just... most of it." Okay, now she was sounding a tad creepy which sent her into a fit of babbling. "And I won't like... follow you. Because that would be creepy. I just... since we're working together on this and you were drugged with something pretty strong I just... I have your back. You know?"

The boots sounded like an ideal solution, especially because she was planning on wearing something similar to work anyway. As Max handed them to her, she pulled them on. They were a little roomy on her good foot, but she laced it nice and tight. She left it a little looser on her wrapped foot, and stood up, going over to where her backpack was and digging out a portable charger. She plugged her phone into it as Max babbled about walking her back.

"Chill, I don't mind, okay?" She said with a laugh. "Besides, if you try sending anything after me, I now know where you live. We're at an impasse, my dear, so no point in it," she teased, adding a wink for emphasis. She tossed her heels into the bag and slung it up onto her shoulder.

Out of curiosity, she flexed her hand and grinned as she felt the reassuring crackle of static around it. "I'm pretty sure that shit is out of my system, if that comforts you at all," she said. She wasn't completely willing to show off her power just yet. She trusted Max enough not to stab her in the back in broad daylight, but she wasn't willing to give away that Spectre worked through electrokinesis. Plus, it could raise suspicion about a young, brilliant researcher working on a project that involved electricity. She glanced at her phone. A few texts, most of them ones she could wait to reply to. She quickly sent replies to the ones that couldn't wait.

"Sorry, got some stuff I had to deal with. You good to go?" She asked, looking up as she shoved her phone back in her pocket.

Max was glad to see the boots were fitting fairly well. And that Willow could walk just fine in them even with the injury. At the sound of Willow's laugh, Max paused. Intrigued by the sound. It was a pure sound; a happy sound free of sarcasm and anger. Max stared only a fraction too long, the wink Willow gave sent something shooting through her, but she managed to pull her attention away. She cleared her throat and ran her hand through her hair. What was she doing? Oh yeah: Keys.

She searched for her keys and small backpack all while contemplating her last question to herself. What was she doing? Willow was a villain. If she knew who Max was... she wouldn't be laughing in her living room. She wouldn't be winking at her. But here she stood. And she had. As Max grabbed her keys from her jacket pocket--the very last place she had checked for them--and then removed her jacket from the peg and pulled it on. She suddenly felt guilty for hiding such a secret from Willow. Then again, the woman was still a stranger and you didn't go telling your secret identity to strangers.

Max debated it a moment as she pulled on her boots. Should she tell her? Max looked over her shoulder at Willow who's gaze was down on the screen of her phone. She gave herself a little nod. Another time, she'll tell her the truth. Right now, it was too risky. If Willow freaked, she could have her friends at Max's doorstep in a few hours. Especially now that she knew where Max was working. Good one, Max... great job. She thought and turned towards Willow-- who's attention was now on Max--her skater-skirt twirling slightly around her. She tucked her hands into the pockets of her jacket and turned towards the door. "Yep. Let's go."

As they walked, Max's eyes searched the world around her for danger. It was a habit now as much as it was her duty. Especially since she hadn't done her patrol last night. Dinah's apartment was coming up which reminded Max of something. She hadn't heard from Dinah in a few days... Worry started to coil in her stomach. "Do you have the time to stop somewhere with me for a second? I want to check on a friend I haven't heard from and I'd... rather not be alone. You know how this city is." She smiled shyly at Willow, a little embarrassed to admit it to the near stranger. She was admitting a lot of things to her it seemed. The woman was a walking truth serum. Or maybe Max was just that trusting.

As Max turned to face Willow, her skirt spinning around her, Willow had a second where she completely lost her train of thought. She mentally chastised herself. She was a client. She couldn't think about her like that. If they'd met under different circumstances, it could be completely different. But not like this. Willow cleared her throat and followed Max out of the apartment. It felt strange, leaving like this, like... well, friends. Willow had a habit of sneaking out before the other person had woken up, or else leaving with a kiss and an empty promise that she would absolutely call them. She wasn't in the right place to get attached like that. This was something she mentally reminded herself of as she followed Max. No getting attached. Strictly business.

She looked up as Max asked her about checking in on somebody. "Don't worry about it, doll, I'm not under any time pressure. I know what it's like." Even if she didn't work with other people, she had allies she worried about, people who she knew had her back. They'd gotten her out of one or two sticky situations, and she'd done the same for them. "Better be safe than sorry in this climate, right?" And she knew what it was like to have to spend the entire working day worrying. Only a week or so ago, one of her friends had given her a fright by working on a job. She'd somehow missed three calls from him in the space of five minutes, and he had then not answered his phone or texted her. Turns out his phone had just gotten broken, but that hadn't stopped her from contemplating storming out in the middle of her work day and going looking for him.

Max smiled softly and nodded but didn't say anything. Her hand tightened into a fist. She checked her phone again, just in case she had missed a notification or she had silenced it without thinking. There was nothing. No texts, emails, calls. In the past few days. Max started walking again, a little faster than she had intended and tried to force herself to slow down. She wasn't going to push Willow faster for her own, probably unnecessary, fears. She could injure her ankle further. Max wasn't that selfish.

Dinah lived a couple streets over and to the right of the university. It was a nice part of town, but nice like a suburb. Everything ultimately looked the same and the security was somewhat lackadaisical. They figured it was a nice enough place to live, but not so nice that people would bother breaking into places. When they got to the front door of the apartment, Max found the dark green key on her ring and inserted it into the lock. Dinah had given her a spare a few years back in case of an emergency. She had used it from time to time to water Dinah's plants or to visit while Dinah was off.

Thankfully, the apartment was only on the second floor and their elevator was working. She pressed the up button and waited. "It'll just be a minute..." she insisted. "Just a minute..." The doors opened with a charming dink and Max stepped inside, waiting for Willow before she hastily pushed the "door close" button and then the number 2. The elevator rose and the closer she got to Dinah's apartment, the more nervous she became. She unconsciously began picking at her nails and the dead bits of skin at her fingers. It was a bad habit she picked up as a teenager. Even more so once she started working at the clinic where people practically bathe in hand sanitizer which tends to dry out the skin. She hissed as she pulled at the skin too far and a drop of blood started to form. She sucked on it as she waited for the doors to open. The elevator gave another charming ding followed by a robotic voice telling them they had reached the second floor.

Max tried her best to keep from taking off down the hallway. When she saw the door in sight, she did take off at a run and got to the door just in time for her to pull out the light green key and stick it into the lock. To her relief, it was locked which was a good sign. Some of her fear eased its grip around her heart and stomach and she turned the lock. She took a deep breath and waited for Willow to walk up. "Sorry about that." She said quietly. "You see. Dinah's an old friend and it's very unlike her to disappear like this..." There was the fear again. She took another deep breath and turned the knob.

She wasn't sure what she expected when she pushed the door open. Villains on the other side with a knife to Dinah's throat. The place ransacked. Dinah sitting on the couch cleaning her guitar or practicing her vocals they way she taught Max to. Which reminded her, she needed to start doing that again. She stepped into the apartment and her air stood on end. Something was wrong. She knew it. But why? The place was as pristine as it usually was, which was to say, the place was definitely lived in, but not filthy. Dinah might've been a bit of a disorganized person, but she wasn't messy. "Dinah?" She called out, but there was no answer.

She thought for a moment, maybe she wasn't home. While unlike her it wasn't entirely uncommon. It tended to happen most when she spent the night in the arms of a stranger. Max was about to turn and leave when she noticed Dinah's bag on the table. Normally her keys were right beside them. Maybe she left her bag? Max decided to look around a bit more, starting with the master bedroom. She raised her hand to knock first but decided it was better to just go in. She turned the knob and pushed the door open. There was a blonde head resting on the pillow beside a mountain of blankets. Max sighed in relief. "Dinah? It's Max. Sorry to barge in, but I hadn't heard from you and you know how this city is lately and--Dinah?"

Max crossed over to the bed and gasped, stumbling backward to get away from what she was seeing. Dinah's pale blue eyes were staring up at the ceiling, lifeless and glazed. The sheets were dark with dried blood. There were bruises and other cuts all along her body and, to top it all off, a hole in her chest where a knife had been. Max choked. "Dinah?" Max reached out to her as she dropped to her knees. Breathing was becoming difficult. The air was warm in here and tasted of blood. In fact, Max was surprised she had missed it before. The whole apartment smelled of old blood. It was filling her nostrils and her stomach was sick with the smell. I have to get out of here... The walls suddenly seemed to close. And she could smell blood on her clothes.

She pushed herself up and took off running. Down the hall, and up the stairs. She ran up, up, up, until she reached the roof. It was the purest air she could get plus there was a breeze. And it was bright compared to the darkness of Dinah's apartment. Max gulped lungs full of clean-ish city air, but it didn't change much other than clear out the reak of blood in her nose. Her head was spinning, her stomach clenched forcefully and she tasted her breakfast. She ran to the metal trash can bolted to the roof for people who like to drink, eat, and/or smoke up here, and vomited into it. Every time she closed her eyes, all she could see was her friend's lifeless body, which of course sent another wave of sickness through her. It took her a moment to remember she hadn't been alone. "Willow..." She managed to choke out.

Willow just nodded as Max assured her that it would only be a moment, and took a minute to text her coworkers to say she'd be in late. Not that they ever minded, but she figured it was probably better to let them know. Only common courtesy, right? She was still looking at her phone as the elevator doors opened, and found herself smirking as Max took off running. She followed at her own speed. Max was clearly worried, she wasn't going to take it personally. She just followed her into the apartment.

Willow immediately knew something was wrong. Her intuition was screaming at her to get out of there, that something bad had happened, was happening, or was going to happen. But she stood her ground. She stayed where she was when Max went into the master bedroom, automatically going into guard mode. She found herself wandering, looking for whatever it was that was driving her intuition crazy. It was a little messier than her apartment, but not unusually so. She sighed- and then she realised what it was, seconds before Max burst out of the bedroom and ran past Willow like she'd seen a ghost. The metallic stench of blood in the air, Willow found herself walking towards the bedroom to confirm what she already knew. A woman, dead in the bed. She started running, following Max. Her ankle ached, but she ignored it, glad for the well-fitting boots. She got to the roof to see Max leaning over a trash can, pale and shaking. Willow didn't think twice about storming over to her. Just as she choked out Willow's name, Willow pulled her away from the trash can and into a hug.

"I'm here, okay? I've got you." In her mind, she was already starting to plot and plan. She was willing to bet they were going to have company any time soon. If they were targeting villains, they knew that the people most likely to go looking for them if they disappeared for a few days would be other villains. Two birds, one stone. So they needed to get away. And now.

"Max. Max, I need you to listen to me, okay? There's more than likely going to be people watching this building. So we need to leave, now. I can have friends come pick us up, okay? They can take us... somewhere safe. Do you understand? I know you're scared and I know you're upset, but we need to go, ASAP," she said, holding Max's face in her hands and staring her straight in the eyes. She only pulled away briefly to text a friend of hers. "SOS. Presumed villain targeted. Need you to come pick me up ASAP." She added the address at the end of the message and sent it. He texted back only a few seconds later- "OMW."

She took Max's hand and started pulling her down the stairs, wanting to be downstairs by the time their ride showed up.

Max allowed Willow to hold on to her for a moment. She closed her eyes, trying to breathe. Willow's smell enveloped her like a blanket and she felt calmer being there. Then she remembered what she had just been doing and why and she pushed back just a little. She wiped at her mouth with the back of her right hand and at her eyes with the back of her left. A single sob bubbled its way up and out, but she wouldn't allow any more.

Then she heard Willow's voice and she looked up in time for her face to be held gently between Willow's hands. Her brown eyes boring into Max's so intently it was like she was trying to make sure her words reached deep inside Max. Which was smart because that's where Max was starting to feel herself retreat but for now, she was held there by Willow's gaze and hands. Her heart beat irregularly, but she chalked it up to her grief, the running, and the vomiting. She tried and failed to find her voice--which was a first for Max and it would be terrified in another circumstance. So instead she just nodded, one hand reaching up to cover Willows. It was more a sign that she was listening than anything else.

Then Willow took her hand, and let her out without another word. In fact, she even squeezed Willow's hand once, as her way to say thank you. Once they reached the bottom floor, she stopped and finally found her voice, "Wait what about--" She couldn't say it now. She couldn't say her name without sobbing. Tears bubbled up, but she blinked them back. "The apartment. Should we notify the police? What if they know we were there and come looking thinking we did it? What if by running we become prime suspects?" She was becoming hysterical and she knew it. Being a thief was one thing, but being a murderer? That's another thing entirely. When she signed up for the third life, she didn't sign up for murder charges. She was definitely losing it. The only thing that seemed to be keeping her tethered to her mind, was Willow's hand still wrapped around hers.

They were so close to outside when Max stopped. Willow turned to look at her, still scanning their surroundings and static crackling around her free hand. Max's worries about the police were probably justified. "They'll be able to confirm she was- that it happened before we were ever here. If it was a different situation, I would call the police and wait until they came, like the good, model citizen that I am. But this is an ambush tactic as old as time." She sighed and ran a hand through her hair. It was stupid and risky, but it might just cover their tracks. "Okay. I have a plan. You get outside, there's going to be a man there with a dark grey car any moment. He's tall, like six foot four, jet black, curly hair. Tell him you're with me. And if I'm not back in five minutes, you leave, you hear me?" She ordered, squeezing her hand briefly before gently shoving her in the direction of the door. She'd spotted a security office only a few minutes before, and it appeared to be empty. She turned and ducked into the office. Sure enough, the CCTV was all there. She grimaced, knowing this wasn't exactly the best idea she'd ever had.

She placed her hands on the monitor and let the current surge through her and through the whole system. It was going to strategically fry the wires and destroy the monitors and hard drives she could see hooked up to them. It was messy, she would have much preferred to do this a little cleaner, but she didn't have the time. Just to be sure no footage could be found, she made sure to fry the hard drives individually. This didn't look like the type of place to keep backups, and she was just praying she was right.

She was tired as she turned and ran out of the building, diving into the passenger seat of Winter's car. "Cutting it a bit close there. Freak electrical surge?" He asked calmly as she belted herself in. "Oddly localised to the CCTV system," she said, laughing a little as she sighed with relief.

Max felt a low level of panic rise in her chest as Willow ordered her to leave with a stranger and then pushed her towards the door, letting go of her hand. Max wanted to turn, to protest, but realized how childish that would be so she pushed herself forward hearing Willow's footsteps recede behind her. She took a deep breath and willed all of her emotions beneath the same confident mask she wore when she first met Willow in the bar as Spectre.

It wasn't difficult to find the man Willow described. He was right in front of the door. His attention was down at his phone as he seemed to absently be scrolling. Max walked up, stood with her arms crossed, and cleared her throat. "Are you Spectre's friend?" She asked. She wasn't sure how many of Willow's friends knew who she was so she figured it would be safest to call her by her villain alias. If they were going somewhere safe, it was likely from those kinds of friends than those she worked with as Willow. When she got his confirmation she replied with her own codename. "I'm Banshee."

Then she climbed into the backseat of the car and watched the building. After about three minutes, Max felt worry work its way through her again. "Come on, Willow," she mouthed. Then the woman came running out of the building and practically dove into the front seat. The look of relief on her face and the sound of her laugh made Max relax. Everything was okay. "Glad you're back."

Well... Not really. Her best friend was... and Max hadn't been there to save her or stop her. She wasn't even sure how long ago it happened, but what if she had patrolled last night? Could she have stopped it? It had to have happened recently considering there wasn't the smell of decay. Only of blood. And the door was locked and her keys were missing from the table. It either meant the person left through the window and down the fire escape and she had just misplaced her keys, or they took the keys and left through the front door. Either way, Dinah was gone. And what if Max was next? Maybe Willow was right to be worried about everything.

As they drove to wherever she was going, Max watched the city pass by and remembered the times she had with Dinah in the different places they went. Coffee at the cafe. Dollar movie night at the theatre. Her first drunken experience at Fragrance the LGBT bar downtown. Max felt her lips curl up in a smile as a tear dropped silently from her eye and rolled down her cheek. That had been an experience. She had made out with a couple different girls, had dollars tucked into her bra as she danced, and nearly went home with a stranger. She woke up sick as a dog the day after and decided to never drink again. Dinah had been there the entire time and stopped her from doing anything too stupid. In fact, she was there to hold Max's hair back when she was sick and made sure she had enough to eat. She did make enough noise to solidify her stance on alcohol. Then there was the time she helped Max get a job at the bar she performed at. Dinners at the 50s diner down the street. Late nights studying for her Medical Tech certification. When her ability presented itself, when they first became friends, and she trained Max. Taught her all she knew. All of it happened and would never happen again... The more tears fell, the lighter she felt and the less she felt. Eventually, she felt nothing at all.

xxx"and these secrets all that we've got so far,

Willow turned around to Max and reached over to squeeze her hand as she pulled away, but then left her alone as they drove. She knew that she probably wouldn’t want to be quizzed and talked at. She needed space, and Willow was willing to give her that. She and Winter spoke in low voices as they drove. Willow explained what had happened and how they’d met. Winter updated her on the job he’d been working last night. He’d had a close call of the security guard kind. He’d gotten out by the skin of his teeth and just a little bit of luck.

They pulled up outside Willow’s apartment. She lived in one of the most secure apartment blocks in the city. 24/7 security, gates, three different types of key required, and multiple villains living there. Plus Willow was friends with all of the security guards, which was handy if anyone came around asking questions. In exchange, she baked them a loaf of her secret recipe banana bread every Friday. It was the perfect place to bring Max. Nobody would look for her here, and even if they did, they’d never get near the apartment.

β€œHey, Max, we’re here, okay? Me and Winter here are going to help you out, okay?” She said in a low, gentle voice. She helped the other woman out of the car and led her over towards the gate, where she swiped her entry card. It buzzed open, and she beckoned Max and Winter inside. She tapped her electric key against the stairwell entrance, and again held the door for them. She was questioning herself and her decisions the whole time. Was she doing the right thing? Was this the right thing to do? Or was she just doing it because she was steadily developing a soft spot for Max. She swallowed her doubt and kept going.

When she made it up to the apartment, she let them all inside. β€œListen, I need to go to work. You’re off today, right? Can you stay here with her?” She asked Winter in a low voice. β€œJust for additional protection. You don’t have to interact with her at all, just... mind the apartment.” She added. He nodded, and she turned to Max. β€œMax, I have to get changed and go to work, dear. But you can stay here, okay? Help yourself to anything in the fridge or cupboards, or nap on the couch, or whatever you need. Get Winter to text me if you need anything, okay? You alright with that, dear?” She asked, resting a hand on Max’s arm.

It wasn't a long ride to wherever they were going and when they finally arrived, Max understood why. It was an incredibly secure building that--in Max's opinion--rivals a highly secure lab. There were guards, cameras, and multiple keys. Max was certainly impressed, not that she really showed it. She allowed herself to be helped from the car but walked on her own. It was the cleanest, safest apartment Max had ever been in. If anyone was after her, this would be a place they would never get to her.

When they entered the apartment, Max immediately knew who it belonged to. Not because she had the keys, but because it was very Willow. It even smelled like her. Max stood still, unmoving until Willow finally addressed her. Anger was a heavy weight in her chest. She was being treated with gloved hands. Like she was fragile and delicate. She was a hero for heaven's sake! But as soon as the anger formed, it was snuffed out. She just didn't have the energy to sustain the emotion. She just felt so drained. She placed her own hand on top of Willows and replied, "Yeah. Alright." Before Willow pulled away, Max squeezed her hand and whispered, "Be careful okay?" Willow had done a lot for her. A lot more than she thought a villain would even do. "And... thank you."

Then, she let go. She made her way to the window and watched the city lights. It was still early in the day so there weren't really any lights on, but there was still a glow to the city even in the daytime. An itching thought formed in the back of her mind that she ignored until another emotion reached the surface: guilt. She was supposed to be at the clinic taking calls, filling out paperwork that would lead to people getting treatment, sending medications and blood samples through the tube system, among other things. Later she was supposed to be at the music shop and then at the bar tonight. Max thought about asking Willow if she could go to the bar tonight to inform the others of Dinah's death, but she figured sooner was better than later so instead she pulled out her phone.

"Hey," she said, attempting to put emotion into her voice, but even to her ears it sounded dead. "Yeah, it's Max. Hey, listen I won't be by tonight. I'm sorry to leave you short staffed but... Look, I don't know if you heard, but Dinah... She's..." Max choked on the word, her sorrow rising again. She rubbed at her eyes with the palm of her hand. "She was... There was so much..." She slid down the surface of the window until she sat on the floor, curled and leaning against it. "Yeah... I'll try to be back soon. Can you... Can you play Fish Out of Water for her tonight? I'm sure she'd appreciate that. Yeah... Bye."

She texted her other two bosses that she wouldn't work tonight. Said there was a death in the family. Said it was someone close, which wasn't a lie. Dinah might not have been blood, but they were sisters in bond. They both reassured her it was alright and they would fill in the gaps somehow. They also said that she could come back whenever she felt ready. While the clinic was really going out on a limb for her by allowing it, the music shop would be fine without her for a bit.

Before Willow left she said two things to her, "Stay safe." And, "Do you have drinks here?"

She watched for a moment as Max went over to the window and started out. And then she went into her bedroom to get changed. She knew for a fact that she was mostly just going to be writing up reports today, because she didn’t exactly feel in the right mindset to be doing precise analystical calculations. Which meant she also didn’t have to worry about lab safety. So she pulled on a cardigan over a red and black skater dress, pulled on over-the-knee socks, and shoved her feet into her trusty, most worn, black Doc Martens, and laced them up nice and tight to support her wrapped foot. She’d almost forgotten about it in all the panic, but now that she was aware of it, it was starting to ache a little. All the running had probably counteracted whatever good the Advil would have done. She stopped briefly in the bathroom to do her makeup and take two paracetamol, before heading back out to the sitting room, her bag slung over her shoulder.

She nodded as Max told her to be safe, and smirked as she asked about the drinks. β€œBottom cabinet nearest the window. Save some for me, okay?” She added with a wink and a smirk. But she shot Winter a look that told him to not let her get too drunk. Getting drunk was a necessary stage in what Max was going through, and realistically Willow’s apartment was the safest place to do it. But she didn’t know what kind of drunk Max was, and didn’t want Winter left alone with an angry super he wasn’t prepared for.

Her work day both flew and dragged. It felt like she hadn’t been that productive at all, and yet somehow, she’d made a considerable amount of progress in her reports. Everything seemed normal. She listened to the news and there was no talk of a freak electrical surge, of a body found, of anything that was out of the norm. But eventually, she was walking back to her apartment, not totally sure of what was awaiting her. She took a deep breath before letting herself back in. β€œJust me!” She called as she shut the door behind her.

It took Max a few hours before she even thought about moving. Then maybe about thirty minutes after that, she finally rose in search of the liquor cabinet. She had been debating mentally, and then she tried to distract herself from thoughts of drinking with other things which mostly involved Dinah. That, of course, made her want to drink some more. Finally, she gave in. As she made her way over to the cabinet, the man Willow was friends with--Winter she remembered--stepped in front of her.

"Let me make you a drink," He offered. Max gazed at him suspiciously, but she knew she wouldn't get a drink unless she allowed him to.

"Alright. By all means," She said, wearing her mask of confidence once more. She watched him mix a drink from lemonade, sweet tea, and bourbon...very little bourbon... and then handed it to her. She made a face primarily because she knew he was onto her. She sighed, thanked him for the drink, and moved to the couch. At first, she just laid there and drank. Then she grew bored and started to look around the apartment. A lot of the books Willow owned were about physics which Max had very, very little interest in. Physics in high school was not her favorite subject. Her thing was biology.

In the end, she was up back on the couch with her second drink and flipping through websites on her phone. Once she finished her drink, she went back to Winter for another. She was on probably her fourth, the alcohol finally kicking in with a buzzing sensation through her body, when sound began on the other side of the door. For a split second, she panicked. Then, she remembered where she was and calmed down. Willow walked through and greeted them both. Without looking up, she replied. "Hey, Willow," She said, more chipper than she thought she would sound like, "How was work?" She finished whatever she was reading, locked her phone, and started to get up from the couch to meet her new friend. When she saw Willow, she paused. Max had seen Willow before she left, but she was so clouded with grief, she hadn't completely realized what she was wearing. "Wow," she said finally, "That dress is cute on you." She bit her lip and decided to stay sitting on the couch. Nice... She wasn't feeling sad, thanks to her drinks, but it also meant she wasn't worried about anything she said. She had absolutely no filter which meant she was going to say whatever came to mind. Would prove to be an interesting night.

She looked at her mostly empty glass, downed the last of it, and then walked over to Winter for another.

She was a little concerned about the cheery manner with which Max greeted her. She'd clearly had a few drinks, but did at least seem coherent. Tipsy, perhaps. She glanced over at Winter, who was having a drink of his own. He didn't usually make weak drinks, but given how peaceful things were, he'd obviously made enough to pacify her. She breathed a sigh of relief. They just might survive this.

Willow couldn't stop herself from blushing as Max complimented her and the dress. She shrugged. "I was just looking for something comfortable to wear this morning. But thank you, I appreciate it," She said with a shrug. "And work was okay, I wasn't super busy, but I got a decent bit of report writing done, so I can't complain too much," she said, making her way over to the drinks cabinet. She mixed herself a good, strong Jack and Coke, looking over at Max as she approached Winter for another. "It's okay, I've got it," she said, making Max one the same as she was drinking but with less alcohol. Willow knew her own alcohol tolerance, but not Max's. "Winter, you can go if you want. I can handle it from here." He looked at her, a silent look asking her if she was sure. She nodded. She could handle it from here.

"Okay. Text me in the morning, okay? And if you need me at any point, just text." He said, and she nodded as she handed Max her drink. He grabbed his jacket and left, leaving the two girls alone. "You hungry? I can cook or I can get take out. I know a place that does great asian food. Or I make a mean Pad Thai myself. Or we can get pizza." She said. She needed to eat, but wasn't picky about what.

Max glared lightly at Willow as she withheld half the bourbon that Winter would pour into her drink. "I'm fine, Willow. You don't need to baby me." She didn't want Willow to hold back. She wanted to forget. Honestly, she wanted to tell Willow not to worry about her tolerance level because she had a high one, but that was back before the club incident. It had been at least two years off the stuff and she was honestly surprised the drinks didn't have more of an effect on her after her fourth one. Then again, she was just getting buzzed off four low alcoholic beverages. Maybe her tolerance really was low. Still, she took the drink and took a few sips from it and then waved at Winter as he was leaving.

Max's stomach growled loudly when Willow mentioned food. She hadn't had the stomach to eat all day. Every time she had blinked she could see Dinah. That is, until the alcohol kicked in. Now she was starving and ready for any food. "I could eat," She replied. She thought for a moment, given the options and asked, "Any chance we could make pizza? Homemade pizza is honestly the best." Plus, she wasn't sure she was entirely... stable enough to go out in public at the moment. She was only buzzed, maybe even tipsy, but it was more... She wasn't sure she would run into people that she and Dinah knew. If she did, she wasn't entirely sure what would happen in her current state. They could technically order in, but where was the fun in that?

She swirled her drink around in its glass. "I called off of work... well obviously, but I figured since I asked you I might as well inform you of my situation. They said I could go back whenever." She didn't look up from her glass. Instead, she lifted it and drank another mouthful.

Willow rolled her eyes as Max snapped at her, insisting she wasn't a baby. "I know that. But I do know you have abilities. And because I don't know what they are, I can't anticipate them, and I really don't want to discover the hard way that they're something super destructive when you get too drunk and lose control of them," She said, keeping her voice low and steady. "And I also don't know what your alcohol tolerance is. So you're getting nice, weak drinks tonight, and you're going to deal with it."

She raised her eyebrows as Max asked if they could make pizza. "I mean, yeah, we can, I think we have most of the stuff for it. But do you really want to wait at least an hour for the dough to prove?" She asked, leaning back against her counter and taking a long drink from her coke. She didn't want to wait that long. Sure, she'd work with it if that was what Max wanted, but honestly, she wasn't sure if she wanted to cook at all. She found cooking relaxing and didn't typically resort to take-outs, but that's what she'd fully intended doing tonight, she was being honest with herself.

"That said, feel free to raid my cupboards for suitable alternatives. I'm up for anything," Willow said, shrugging. "And I'm also going to take some more painkillers while you do that," she added, heading back out to the bathroom. She downed two more advil with a mouthful of her drink, and kicked off her shoes, tossing them into the bedroom as she passed. "So, any luck?"

Max wouldn't look at Willow. She was right to be cautious, but Max... kind of didn't care. But..."I've never lost control of my ability." She said quietly. And it was true. No matter how drunk she got, her voice was never out of her control. Now, it's vanished before, but that was either after a long night of using it or when she's under a great deal of stress and her voice itself vanishes. "I've just... lost it before." She didn't feel like explaining that one to Willow though so she took another sip of her drink.

Max thought a bit and agreed with Willow. Waiting for the dough to set would be torture. She was a little bummed but decided to go rummaging through the cabinets after Willow gave her permission. Then she found two things that filled her with excitement. Pasta noodles and Alfredo sauce. She had one container in each hand when she turned, smiling, to face Willow. This. We have to make this." She brought them over to the counter to put them down and then went back to the pantry to contemplate their needing more. She decided one of each was fine and went in search of bread.

"Do you have bread and garlic spread? We could make garlic bread too." She thought a moment, staring into the cupboards. "Do you have any meats we could put in it? Shrimp would work too." Her hunger was causing her thoughts to race and run together like ink.

Willow grinned to herself and kept sipping her drink as Max raided her cupboards, clearly having found some meal inspiration. She seemed a little too animated for somebody that was mourning as much as she had been earlier, giving away that she was a little tipsy. But at least she was animated, and Willow felt like she didn't have to tiptoe around her. She got to her feet and put down her drink as Max started asking about garlic and bread, as well as meat.

"Chicken breasts in the fridge. And we don't have garlic spread, but we do have..." She reached around Max, grabbing a bulb of garlic from the worktop. "Actual fresh garlic and parsley. i can make proper garlic butter. Herbs are the only plants I can keep alive," she added, peeling the garlic and taking two cloves of it. She scooped some butter out of the butter dish and into a bowl, before starting to chop the garlic.

She couldn't remember the last time she'd done this with anyone. Even her friends. Most of her friends were villains, which meant they usually just texted each other about how exhausted they were, and had occasional movie and pizza nights. She couldn't remember the last person she'd actually cooked with. Probably her mother. And for a moment, she was transported back to her sixteen year old self. In the midst of a mood swing and angry at the entire world, her mother had made her help cook dinner. And they'd talked as they cooked. They'd laughed and danced around the kitchen together. She could still smell her mother's perfume.

She forced herself to shake herself out of the memory and started chopping the second clove of garlic. She scraped it into the butter, and pulled some leaves from the garlic plant on her window. Anger was surging in her chest, anger at the heroes, anger at the system that had failed her. She wanted to see them burn.

Max nimbly made her way to the refrigerator and pulled out the chicken breast and grabbed a pan. Once she had them on the counter, she noticed Willow making homemade garlic butter. She watched her for a minute and a smile broke out across her face. "You're a wizard. A friggen food wizard. Like I said, homemade is definitely better than store bought." She shook her head and started to thaw the chicken. She just wanted it soft enough that she could put in the microwave and not have to nuke it. She filled the sink with warm water, plugged it, stuck the chicken in, and left it for a bit. When she turned back around to look at Willow, she noticed a tightness to her shoulders. Max rose an eyebrow and walked over to her, but didn't reach out to touch her. Max got the feeling Willow wasn't one to be touched when her mood was dark. "Are you okay?"

Then she had an idea. "You know what we need? She practically ran to the couch grabbed her phone and scrolled through her music. "Music. Otherwise, it's all just so quiet." She selected an upbeat song and let it play while they moved about the kitchen. She wasn't typically one to dance, but with alcohol in her system, she allowed it. It wasn't that she was a bad dancer she just... didn't really... dance. Her dancing usually involved jumping up and down. Without her boots, she slid across the floor with her socks as she worked on boiling the noodles, warming the sauce, and checking on the meat.

At one point, she was even twirling, her skirt whirling around her. Max! Twirling! Wouldn't Dinah be surprised when she told her-- Max stopped so short she slipped and tumbled to the floor. She realized she could never tell Dinah. At least... not physically. Max wasn't sure she believed that those in the afterlife could hear them and see them unless they were a ghost, but she was certainly willing to try.

Man, she needed another drink.

Willow found the temptation to turn and snap at Max to turn the music off almost overwhelming. She didn't need reminding of what had happened, not like this. It had been so long, and it was still so raw. She kept chopping, and scraped the leaves into the butter, before grabbing a fork and starting to mix it all together. She wasn't even letting herself look at Max. She needed to stay focused on what she was doing, because if she wasn't careful, electricity was going to start crackling around her hands, and she didn't want that. She took another deep breath and started spreading the butter on the bread. She happened to glance over at Max just as the other girl took a tumble to the floor. Willow made her way over to the other girl, grinning despite herself.

"And you were complaining because I was making your drinks too weak?" She remarked with a smirk. "No more alcohol before food," she chastised, a teasing grin still on her face. She held out a hand to pull her to her feet. The anger was gone, however briefly. It came in flashes and waves, a wound nearly healed stretched a little too tight. For a moment, she questioned if helping the heroes would ever be the right thing, if letting them die was just justice for what they had done. And then she brought herself back to reality and to Max. "Sliding around on this floor really isn't the best idea. Learned that the hard way in my first week living here."

At first, Max didn't look up at Willow. She didn't want her to see the sadness beginning to settle over her shoulders once more. Honestly, she should've known better. Even with alcohol in her system, she couldn't escape her grief. A light sob shook her shoulders, but she gulped the rest back, took a deep breath, and took Willow's hand accepting her help up. She smiled softly at Willow, attempting to return to her chipper self. The smirk on the woman's face helped a little. "Thanks," She said quietly, "But it wasn't the alcohol. I just..." She paused and rubbed the back of her head, her fingers catching in the dark strands of her hair. "I thought about Dinah." She walked over to the counter and hopped up on it using the space by the sink as a stool. "You know... I actually swore off drinking?"

"The last time I had gotten super shit faced, Dinah had taken me out. To this day, I don't even remember the reason, but I know it was to cheer me up. Maybe it's back when I figured out I wouldn't have the funds to go to medical school so I settled for lesser education, but anyway," She waved her hand as if swatting away a fly, "She had taken me to the gay bar downtown: Fragrance, because I-well... I swing both ways. Anyway, she knew guys tend to intimidate me sometimes--sometimes--so she figured girls would help. And at first it was a couple light drinks, but she paid the bartender to absolutely knock me on my ass." She laughed a little to herself at the memory. "And I was sooo far gone after that and I was sick as hell the next day. Swore off drinking. Well... until now apparently. But what I was thinking about was how... after that incident, it was really hard for her to get me to dance because I don't... really dance. But here I am, twirling in your kitchen and I thought "Just wait until I tell Dinah" and it hit me that-- that I can't. And the realization I guess knocked me on my ass." She finally looked at Willow, worried she looked as pathetic as she felt. "Graceful, huh?"

She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes as she looked at Willow. The woman was beautiful. In both the traditional sense and in her own ways. She may be a villain, and she may hate heroes, but she was... well good. She cared about other people. Hell, she cared about Max and she was practically a stranger. If she didn't, why was she in her apartment? She tilted her head back, attempting to avoid letting the tears fall and forced a smile. "Ugh, god. I must look so pathetic to you." Well... while she may be feeling her grief again, there was still no filter between her brain and her mouth. Great.
