Khan

"They say I'm from Roma. Last time I checked, Roma was just a myth, but I guess I'm a bit mythical myself."

Description

Image
Khan is a man of a philanthropist who was instated into the Guide network due to his need for knowledge. With his new status he has traveled the world in an effort to gain a better understanding of both nature and the new environment. He is intelligent in the way a good Buddhist is, yet retains full understanding of engineering from his pre-apocalypse job; something that he has used to aid many groups around the world. Despite his calm nature, he is oddly proficient in small arms, rifles and traps, ensuring his survival in less civilized populations. He keeps his hair and bead relatively short, but doesn't go out of his way to become clean. To other people he is enigmatic and the source of some rumors, though this has since been revealed as a result of his Guide status. He was a member of a special combat unit before the war, resulting in his proficiency with weapons and quick entry into the Guide network.

Full Name: A Khan - He dropped his real name the few seconds after the apocalypse begun, wanting a fresh start. The idea of him being linked to the warrior Genghis Khan also has its benefits.
Gender: Male
Age: 51
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 156 lb
Hair: Silvery Grey. Surprisingly clean and smooth. Also maintains a goatee
Physical Condition: Surprisingly well considering malnutrition and disease in the world. Lower left leg is a metal prosthetic that was once a functioning robotic leg, but now functions on kinetic force alone. Can still run despite. Not particularly strong, although he can perform hand to hand contact.
Medical Condition: Loss of lower left leg due to radiologically caused tumour well before the earth lost its magnetosphere. Has suffered from relatively low and medium radiation doses over his travels which has culminated in general accelerated ageing and one tumor in his upper left arm that has since been removed. Has also experienced many other region dependent diseases and is somewhat resistant to common disease as a result. Diabetic and dependent on some drugs he has in high supply.
Appearance: An imposing man who appears to be able to see into the darkest corners of your soul while also appearing grandfather-like. His travelers clothing make him look like a cross between a mercenary and a spaceman, with his radiological protective clothing being stored in his military issue backpack when not in use. He also wears a leather trench coat and thick leather boots. Despite his travels, his clothes remain no dirtier than anyone else's. The bottom of the left leg of his trousers has been taped and sealed to the top of the boot in an aid to hid the prosthetic, as missing limbs are 'a sign of the devil' to some tormented, cut off settlements.

Personality

Personality description: Khan is a man who believes in deeper meanings and resolves to guide those who need guiding. He carries weapons not because he likes to use them, but because lives can be saved with threats or a well placed shot. Khan is quite a quiet man, but will openly talk about something philosophical relating to the situation if he deems it important. He also tends to disappear for a while, before re-appearing right where you wouldn't expect to find him, boosting his enigmatic nature. Even before the apocalypse, Khan was never affected by emotional scenes or events, and rarely appears to show any emotion at all. These attributes make people consider him as a crazy old man, yet he waves that statement aside claiming they are ignorant and will learn with time.

More optimistic people claim Khan is a messenger from Roma, but he often denies this - he is actually trying to confirm its existence. The fact that he normally works alone has also gained him a sort of exaggerated god-like legend. "How can one man alone travel around this new world and survive. I have even heard he managed to kill an irradiated ten foot scorpion!" being one of the many humorous anecdotes heard on his travels. Khan uses these statements to describe the dangers of Rumors, especially when exaggerated. He is also somewhat of a comedian when it comes to such stories of the wasteland, and can be sarcastic at times.

Fears: Causing the deaths of many innocents. His weapons jamming. Falling. Quickly clicking noises from a poor quality speaker attached to his hip.
Habits: Being philosophical. Being philosophical to delay thieves and murderers. Cleaning his rifle. Scratching his prosthetic. Thinking intensely at random times. Checking his PDA and Dosimeter.
Emotional Sensitivities: His life before the apocalypse. Being the soul cause of the destruction of a small settlement one year after the magnetosphere disappeared. Thebes in Egypt - Before the apocalypse, his special forces team failed to discover the locations of several dirty bombs, resulted in over two hundred civilian casualties, the death of three team members and the loss of his left leg. The team were dishonorably discharged after this event.
Ethical Beliefs: Doesn't believe in myths of gods, lest they could be physically possible. Maintains his own moral code and adhears to it strictly.

For the second time Khan was tasked with mooring their craft, Annika only helping with the first rope before returning to the group. He quickly found them again, though, as Adelaide's hair made a sharp contrast within the crowds.

----

“Figure we’re on the outskirts of th’ market, now; it’s probably just up ahead. You all ever been there?” asked Adelaide to the group, despite the fact both Khan and Ari were keeping some distance behind and Moonie had disappeared into the stands yet keeping with the group.

"I've been 'ere a few times, though there were less stands. From what I remember there is a entrance up ahead, as in a few metal poles or the like. The last time I came a fire broke out though, and I ain't trusted the place since" Annika responded. She was walking alongside Adelaide, ignoring the traders' calls to what she figured was expensive tat. They weren't in the main trading centre so they were obviously scammers or the like. Despite this, she noticed that Ari had bought something from one of the stands and, in a swift by unsubtle move, placed the item on Adelaide's wrist before returning to the back of the group near Khan. Adelaide almost stumbled in the action and examined the trinket - a crescent moon, probably a remnant of Islam faith. That was the thing with post ignition religions, they had either merged into a single mess of beliefs or were extremist cults. Annika, still watching Adelaide saw her blush slightly and smiled. Annika didn't press about her feelings.

----

Khan didn't escape the traders' insistence either, in fact he seemed to have got the worst of it. He had a polished, high quality rifle, what seemed to be a packed ammo belt, a backpack and untorn clothes. This alone would give the impression that he was the richest of the group and most likely to buy something. Traders were offering sizeable portions of their wares for his rifle, one even offering his entire stand, yet Khan ignored them. Even if he were interested it was merely aesthetics, tenth-hand clothing or in rare cases low grade food. He also noted that the drug pushing stands were by far the largest.

"Good to know they have there priorities right." Khan muttered to Ari, failing to notice that he was ahead busy clipping a copper bracelet to Adelaide.

A child, no more than eight, ran up to Khan with a clear path to bump into him. Khan only noticed him at the last second as the kid was grabbing onto his PDA pouch, not realising it was held on by a steel loop, and slipped in the process. Khan stumbled a little, but continued forward, with the kid disappearing into the crowd behind him. Ari had rejoined him and kept his head down, while Moonie flitted along each stand before shunning each trader in turn, taunting each of them. Within five seconds two rusted iron pillars rose in front of them, clearly made post ignition. This signalled the entrance to the main trading complex.
