History: The household she grew up in prided itself in both its family tree and, not wanting to simply rest on their genealogical laurels, their business savvy. Her father was known economist and businessman John Stuart Campbell IV, and her mother was a lawyer and highly-respected academic. Both seemed the picture of power and perfection, and everywhere they went they were almost universally held in high esteem. The two Campbell children seemed to provide an air of domesticity and softness to the otherwise austere couple, and though that served to improve their image somewhat, owing to the overwhelming media curiosity as to how their home life progressed, the home situation was far from that of the nuclear family they had expected them to be. Her parents often fostered an atmosphere of competition—one she took advantage of with her older brother Jack. Throughout their childhood they spent their time engaging in healthy—and unhealthy—competition both curricular and extracurricular. One advantage she found to being nine years younger was that she had plenty of time to one-up her brother.
She was, as expected, an exceptionally gifted student and breezed through her elementary and secondary school years. Her college years, however, were met with a minor setback due to an accidental pregnancy. At twenty, she wanted little to do with a baby, feeling that taking care of it would set her long-term goals back. The ambitious young adult was, initially, at a loss. Though the baby was a burden, she was unwilling to abort for fear of unnecessarily complicating her health. Ultimately, she decided to carry it to term, settle the matter with the man responsible for her setback (her then-boyfriend Thomas Whitby) and leave her with him as soon as she possibly could. After that, she was free to carry on with her pre-law and law education, rising through the ranks in the law firm she worked for, and through steady community involvement. She needed to make an image for herself, no matter what it took.
Meeting Irving Macbeth was something of a fortuity. Though years younger, he was physically appealing and served as something akin to arm candy for her. Discovering his link with Claude King and the remote, but very possible, possibility that either one of them would ascend even higher served to make a union with him even more attractive.
