Selwyn remained seated, smirking at Shiabiann's attempted words of insult.

"Come now, Magistrate. Jealousy is not a good look on you, especially on such a joyous occasion. I daresay our 'God-Queen' would only want positive emotion from one of her Throne Holders," he spoke with only a mere hint of apathy in his voice.

"Besides, it would be such a terrible shame if one of your top earners were to suddenly disappear, or if perhaps a brothel of yours burnt down from a drunken citizen celebrating the day's events. Of course, should such a terrible event occur, you have the full support of the Merchant's Ward."

Selwyn moved his attention from the cat and mouse conversation over to the blue haired Knight known as Orfea Pathen, summoned for the execution. As she turned to the crowd to deliver her blasphemous tirade, Selwyn reached into his belt and grasped the hilt of an ornate dagger, sheathed in crimson, bearing the head of a silver fox at the base of the handle.

Upon Magistrate Shiabiann's words of scold to Orfea, Selwyn rushed up behind the blue haired Knight and held his now drawn dagger to her throat as the rest of the Knights readied their weapons at the woman. The God-Queen took her leave to return indoors just before Selwyn leaned in close to Orfea's ear, lowering his voice to a mere whisper.

"A word of advice; if there's one thing I learned along my rise, it would be to never let anyone know your true intentions, my dear Orfea."

Selwyn let the God-Queen's Knights take her out of his grasp before turning back to Shiabiann.

"This does not bode well for our Wards, Magistrate. Order must be restored, or riots in our streets are inevitable," the man spoke as he turned to the now restless crowd, chanting and screaming obscenities up at the stage. He began to address them, drenching his words in as much charisma as he could muster. Selwyn raised both his hands in an attempt to garner the masses' attention.

"People of Iracot, do not fear. Praise be the God-Queen and her rule. We are now blessed with not only one, but two sacrifices on this, a most momentous of days. Enjoy the rest of the ceremony, and afterwards, enjoy your first round of drinks on me at any one of the taverns in the Merchant's Ward," he let the words ring out before delivering the finale to his speech.

"In addition, Magistrate Shiabiann Xao-Lai is most graciously offering her Ward's services at half price all evening in celebration of our Holiness herself!"

Selwyn smiled, knowing Shiabiann would not be pleased at all. He lowered his hands and turned to the stunning Magistrate of the Pleasure Ward, speaking so only she could hear.

"We do what we must to keep order," Selwyn said, his smart smirk turning into a full on smile.

"You dare to blaspheme your God-Queen?" The words echoed across the courtyard... "Seize her!" the god-queen had ordered. "Well, that's my Que." Parem whispered to himself. He glanced at the kid burning alive. He could have stopped the fire, but it was too late. He would be long dead before Parem could get him to safety.

With fury in his golden eyes, Parem leaped up onto the sacrificial platform next to the girl. He quickly unsheathed his Elvish made Black Falchion sword and made direct eye contact with the God-Queen. "Not today you foul witch." He shouted with anger and confidence in his voice. The knights began to charge but before they could approach them, Parem formed a meter thick ring of fire around him and the girl. Sweat began to bead down his forehead. He had to force himself not to fall to his knees because of the immense amount of energy needed to sustain the ring wall of fire. Then he grabbed a hold of the girl and with a loud shout "DUROCK!"...

A dark shadow overcame them as the elephant sized, black feathered Griffon rocketed toward the ground next to them. The Griffon made an ear piercing screech that made many of the windows surrounding the courtyard shatter. Suddenly the ring of fire disappeared and using the last bit of energy he had left he grabbed a hold of the girl and lifted her onto the Griffon. "Pardon me miss, but our ride is here." With all the strength he had left he glanced back at the knights that were now almost upon them, then jumped onto Durocks back.

Without a moments notice, Durock spread his wings and soared into the air away from the courtyard...
But not before a rouge arrow pierced Parem at the back of his right shoulder...
With incredible pain, Parem broke the arrow and collapsed on Durocks back bleeding heavily, unconscious.

Everything had gone wrong, Calor noticed. He stood there as the God-Queen took her leave behind him, his head shaking slowly as the knights and those few who dared opposed the God-Queen's rule seemed to verbally duel back and forth, and as the figure known as Parem' Zel rushed through to try and save the woman who had refused to carry out the sacrifice.

"Are these people serious?" He asked, a brow raised as he heard them yell in the crowd. Words of unfairness, cruelty, of being unjust and tyrannical?

"SILENCE! I DEMAND SILENCE!" His voice roared out over the crowd; the silent blade that protected their 'beloved' Queen shocking most of them into silence.

"Cruelty? Witch? Tyrannical? Have you not looked at yourself, you disgusting hypocrites? I have walked as one of you, drank in your taverns, made friends and enemies of both the poorest and most comfortable of you. Let me tell you this, peasants: all of you are below the God-Queen, guilty of all things you accuse her of being."

He began to walk back and forth, his pacing speeding as he kept his head on the thousands below him.

"You people drink, you fornicate, you sit in basements and exchange coin as dogs tear each other asunder and cheer for more as men and slaves use all manner of lethal weaponry to slaughter each other in rings of combat. You laugh as men beat each other to death, as they slice and stab and butcher. You crave war and violence, you ignore those lesser than you in desperate need of help and charity and you seek nothing but to further your own wealth and power and are jealous of my beloved Queen because by right of divinity, she has it.

"Rule under her banner is far more preferable to the chaos you cretins yourselves would cause if you did not have her to follow. And do these sacrifices not resemble the executions many of you go to watch regularly? Where you shout, cheer and insult the criminals about to have their lives taken away? Do you not throw turds and rotten fruit and dishonour them with every movement, even if guilty only of stealing from a market stall, or wrongly accused in the first place? Why are these sacrifices, why are the things my God-Queen demands so much more despicable than what you yourselves do?"

"Our God-Queen is Queen by divine right. She will guide us to be a better people, she works tirelessly to love us all and rid us of the sins inherit in our kind, yet you do nothing but resist her and scream of foulness. By order of I, Calor Elohan, chosen husband of God-Queen Sarene Iracot, I order all of you to bow, re-pledge your allegiance to her and her state and immediately stop all thoughts of treason. If you do not, then you will no longer be welcome in this country and I hereby sentence you to be exiled and cast beyond our borders; your lands, possessions and titles stripped away from you, by force if our Queen's Knights deem it necessary! Those who do not comply with either of these orders will be restrained and taken for future sacrifices."

Oh, he wasn't sure his Queen would like his speech, but it was said and done and he had nothing else to do but turn and follow her back into her palace.

Melody watched complacently as things went south. Poor pitiful Orfea. Melody instantly knew there would be bigger repercussions for the girl's actions and wasn't surprised by her thoughts. Not only did the God-Queen become angry, but decided to punish the girl's family as well. As the musician stood there, she kept her calm as others next to her started to panic. Taking a deep breath, she steadied herself, ready to move if possible. The tension in the air though rose to a feverish pitch by what happened next. She caught a flash of movement as she saw a man saved Orfea. The silver hair woman gave the man credit for his courage. The fact that he was a magic user didn't surprise her for a good number of people were like that, herself included.

When Magistrate Selwyn spoke though, Melody wanted to roll her eyes, but didn't. A more silver-tongue fellow she'd yet to meet. She had performed at his tavern at times and had been a target of some unsavory characters, the magistrate included. She had yet to figure out his true motives though. One thing he was good with was his words.

Of course the next one to speak was none other than the God-Queen's shadow himself, Calor Elohan. When he ordered all to bow, she wasted no time in doing so. Inside though she hated doing this. She only served her masters, but until she was given a direct order to act, she would bide her time. His speech did make a point though. Humans were natural hypocrites. She herself was one of them and be the first to admit it. However, her purpose was for the greater good.

Orfea stared at the man in shock, not really understanding what had just happened. She was so ready to die, and yet there she was; alive. Her eyes opened wide, she finally grasped the situation at hand. As she was swept onto the grython's back, she spoke - well, it was more of a weak mumble.
"Thank you..." But then she looked back over to her parents, as they struggled against the hold they had held upon their wrists. But what shocked her the most was the rage in their eyes. She knew they'd have been mad... But not enraged. They then both noticed her, and began to curse her loudly as she retreated on the gryphon's back with the mysterious man.
Shaking her head slowly, she let the tears stream freely down her paled cheeks. Unknowingly, she'd let her head rest on his shoulder as she gently let her eyelids rest.
Orfea could hear the chaos from below, but was content in her own thoughts. She didn't care for the 'God-Queen' any longer. It was then she realised, that a duty that is nothing more than what then whom it is too.

Inside the Palace of Iracot servants had cowered in the wake of the God-Queen. There were many bowed down at the ground, mouths moving in prayer to Sarene Iracot. Fresh cracks lined the marble walls of the palace and shards of broken pottery littered the floor. It looked like the aftermath of a quake where the God-Queen had tread inside the palace.

The doors to the God-Queen's chambers slammed shut with a boom that echoed down the quieted halls. It was apparent that none were to disturb her.

Once inside the relative safety of her rooms, the God-Queen collapsed to the floor on the lush carpets. She crossed her arms over her half-exposed chest and curled up into a ball, weeping. The paint on her face ran into the threads of the rug. How dangerous it was for the God-Queen to act weak in such a precarious moment but she could not resist. The emotions pulled at her and Sarene needed to vent through her tears.

The Magistrates were going to destroy her if control was not regained. There was an open rebellion taking place against Sarene and she could not afford it.

Trembling, the God-Queen picked herself up off the floor and stalked over to her ceiling to floor length mirror. Sarene ripped at her hair, pulling the braids from it and the jewels. The crown that had rested atop her head shattered against the marble walls of her chambers.

The shards scattered on the red carpets like stars in the sky.

Sarene Iracot ripped the gossamer gown off of her body and began to scrub the paint off of her until her skin turned pink.

Calor had entered the palace, the courtyard outside the subject of quite interesting events, but never-the-less peace would soon be regained and those "treasonous" few who would dare to openly defy Sarene at one of her own executions were likely being dealt with accordingly.

No servant, guard or maiden saw him as he cast his form through the halls; turning, weaving and viewing the mess Sarene seemed to have made in her own palace. Was she upset? Understandable, he supposed. No-one expected a Goddess to be devoid of emotions, much less him. She was likely so used to security and her own way that seeing defiance like that had shook her considerably. However, Calor was there to deal with that. As was the Queen's Knights and all her other loyal servants. She would soon be able to face them again as a divine figure without worry of retaliation.

He reached the doors to her private chambers, but he did not open them or dare to trespass. Instead, he turned and leaned against their polished exteriors, turning head so as to press his ear against the wood and speak into the space where the doors joined together when shut.

"My Queen, it is I, Calor. Order is quickly being restored, the Knights weeding out any who would dare disobey you and punishing them accordingly. It seems Orfea Pathen has attempted to escape with an unknown assailant, but your Knights are pursuing them and will assuredly put them to the sword before the hour is done. If not, I will find them personally."

There was a moment of hesitation in him before he continued.

"What is it you will me to do, my Goddess?"

Calor's voice was dismissed and went unheard by choice. There was too much to do and so little time. The Magistrates would come for the God-Queen soon and destroy her. The paint would not come off! Sarene scrubbed and scrubbed at her skin until it started to become raw. Minuscule droplets of blood started to rise on the God-Queen's skin.

She stopped rubbing at the paint and stared at the blood. The Magistrates had always forced Sarene to never bleed and warned her that if she did so they would bring about her destruction. The God-Queen smeared the blood on her arm and tried to wipe it away to get rid of the evidence of her mortality.

"Calor!" Sarene called. The woman's hands trembled in fright and she was as helpless as a child. If anyone knew what to do it was Calor, her must trusted subject. Never before had he seen her in weakness but now that things were set into motion that could not be stopped, Calor had to know the truth.

Sarene Iracot was no goddess.

At the sound of his name being called, Calor burst in through the door as though expecting assassins to be upon her. His hand was over the hilt of his blade, his other raised as though preparing some spell. He saw no intruders, only Sarene and the state she was in. He couldn't say he hadn't expected it; that he had never had his doubts or suspicions, but when he saw her in such weakness he truly began to consider his suspicions as proved.

But that didn't matter. He had thought enough on the possibility to know that he didn't care.

Slowly, he approached her, quickly removing a silver cloth from his coat to offer her as he crouched by her side. "Do not worry, my Queen," he reassured her. "Some part of me has always known; you do not have to utter a word. No matter your nature, you are still the God-Queen I swore to serve and protect. You are still a woman, with a living body that has desires and can feel pain."

He looked at the smeared pink on her arms and slowly shook his head.

"Goddess or no, divine will put you on that throne. Divine will dictates you keep it. One day you will pass from this world and be reborn as a true Deity... Until then, this blood proves your morality. It proves you live, that you have true power. What good can a dead God do? The power to take and create life is still yours, my Queen."

He attempted to place a hand on hers.

Sarene placed her fingers on Calor's lips to quiet him. She looked about the room as if expecting intruders to burst through the doors at any given moment.

"Divine will did not place me on the throne of Iracot, Calor," Sarene said in a near whisper. "The Magistrates have all the power. I am their doll; their puppet. I am not a goddess but a tool of the Magistrates. What happened today at the Sacrifice, my failure, is unacceptable. They will come for me and they will destroy me, Calor."

"Shh, do not speak," she urged Calor, knowing that he was about to declare his ability to protect her even against the Magistrates.

"I have to leave, tonight," Sarene said, removing her fingers from the man's mouth. The icy demeanor that the God-Queen had always harbored was absent. It was as if another woman entirely sat before Calor yet one that still looked like his God-Queen. She had dropped the facade the Magistrates forced her to bear and had become the personality that was secretly hidden away in her mind.

"Come with me Calor," the God-Queen said. "Let us leave this place and find a new home. I no longer want this... I want to be free from the Magistrates and from Iracot. We will leave Viridian altogether and let it fall to ruin on its own."

"I cannot do this without you, Calor." Sarene's turquoise eyes searched for the answer in Calor's. He had all the power to report her confession to the Magistrates. He could be the beginning of her destruction or Calor could whisk Sarene away into the night under disguise and free her from the tyranny of the Magistrates.

In that moment it was Calor who was the god.

"Your place, my Queen, is here and on your throne. You seem scared, confused; might I dare say not thinking straight? You say the Magistrates hold the real power, but I disagree. Your people hold the real power and it is you they worship, adore and follow as Queen, not them. As you sit on your throne and make this country what you wish it to be, I can take my sword and kill the Magistrates. I can give all power to you and you alone, so that you can make your own decisions and not be subject to the decisions made for you."

He was giving her everything. Even if he took into account the possibility that this was what she wanted, that she had been manipulating him into suggesting these very actions, he did not care. He would remain loyal.

"Request a meeting with them, my Queen. A locked room for secrecy. Allow them to bring bodyguards, if they wish, for then I will not be out of place there. When the meeting starts, you will listen to them and speak to them. You will not touch the drinks, or the food, and weapons will be strictly disallowed in the meeting chambers. As you stall them, I will kill their bodyguards, then I will enter the room and kill them also."

He looked around, to make sure that they were not being overheard. "Then, we reveal the truth of their manipulation and threats. You will not be seen as weak, for you took action against them and they paid for their treachery. You will not lose face and you will remain a Goddess, holding TRUE power. Unless, of course, you are so set on eloping. I will follow you, whatever your decision."

Calor suggested killing the Magistrates. She jerked back from Calor as if she had been slapped across the face. Never before had the thought of having the Magistrates killed crossed the God-Queen's mind before. The idea implanted into her mind and Sarene began to think on it more deeply.

"If we are going to kill the Magistrates," Sarene said, her eyes glancing back at the doors to her rooms. "We have to be more cunning than that. They will sense a trap. They do not answer to summons but it is I who answer to theirs."

"There will be one soon but I will be placed in great danger. They could still have me killed. We must make them the public enemy and Sacrifice them," Sarene said, making her thoughts aloud.

"But I am no strategist. I do not plan wars or battles. If you think it is best to stay, then I will stay. Tell me what I must do, Calor," the God-Queen said, taking his face into her hands so their eye contact could not be broken.

"My Queen," he said, keeping the eye contact she seemed to require so badly. "Be aware that to keep the Magistrates alive for Sacrifice is extremely dangerous. Who knows what guards will be placed over them as they await their death. Who knows what hiccup might allow them to escape and seek refuge with allies? Indeed, who knows what allies might be willing to rise up in their names and act against us? Inevitably, their allies will act, but we can at least weaken them by my slaying of these men with my own sword."

"I will not tell you what you must do; as Queen, you must find the wisdom for both of us. I will follow you to my death never-the-less. If you wish to answer their summons, then please do whatever they wish of you and trust in me, with your body, your heart and soul, to save you from their evil machinations. Trust me to protect every precious hair of your head and foil whatever plans they might have. Trust that no matter how dire the situation, I will always bring you victory and arrive in time to successfully do whatever bidding you ask of me... For you are not only my Queen, but also my love and my future wife. No force of God or mortal has the power to stop me when you point and tell me to act, or when your life is in danger."

He kept himself steady, as though he almost expected their private meeting to quickly take a rather unorthodox turn. The image of her divine Queendom may have been broken, but he still saw her as a woman.

The Magistrates had never allowed Sarene Iracot to touch others, not even themselves. The God-Queen had always felt a disconnect with others and it was the reason why her blessings had been so few. And yet, feeling Calor's skin beneath her fingers and in her palms felt good, even if forbidden.

If there was one soul in all of Althaea that truly loved Sarene it was Calor. He had said it himself. Sarene felt something give way inside; a wall that broke down that had been built by the Magistrates. The God-Queen's gaze dropped from Calor's onto his mouth and she wondered what it would be like to have him kiss her.

Sarene's breathing deepened and her hands trembled in anticipation. Her tongue darted out to wet her lips.

And then the woman stood, reaching at her throat to take off the torturous silver collar. The remains of her gown fell away, leaving the God-Queen completely nude. She sat herself at her vanity and began to brush her hair.

"I will not wait for the Magistrates summons. You will go and summon them as you have planned. As my husband, loyal subject, and my love, I trust your judgement Calor Elohan. Do not disappoint," Sarene said, her cold demeanor snapping so easily back into place. However, in the reflection of the mirror her look upon Calor was anything but frigid.

Calor stood and stepped back, retaining a strict professionalism about him as the Queen brushed her hair. "Very well, my Queen. I will have them summoned for tomorrow eve; an emergency council to discuss possible treasonous elements. They will gather, they will dine, they will bring bodyguards and weapons and all the comforts they desire. Then they will die."

"Might I also suggest, my Queen, that you choose your future magistrates wisely and limit their power so this situation need never happen again."

He went quiet, a moment of awkward silence putting a stop to his plotting. "Shall I go and perform these duties now? Or do you have another task for me to do here?" He stepped closer, his fingers finding her shoulders as he looked over her and into the mirror at their reflections.

"There is one more task that needs to be completed before we can face the Magistrates. Securing your position of power over them will be essential. When the Magistrates are dead we will need to maintain as much power as possible over the people as well. Two entities are greater than one," Sarene Iracot said. Her eyes bore into the reflection of his own gaze.

"Let us exchange our vows and be married in this very room," the God-Queen said. There need not to be all the bells and whistles of a grand ceremony. None needed to know of the marriage except for the Magistrates, who would be red-faced with absolute anger. The announcement of Calor and Sarene's marriage would upset them and force the Magistrates attention on Sarene. It would give Calor a more open chance to slay them all while in their uproar.

She explained all of this to Calor as she set down her ebony brush.

"The engagement they could deny but a marriage they cannot, especially since I am the God-Queen," Sarene said. She stood and turned to face Calor.

"Now kneel before me and take your vows, not as my vassal, but as my husband."

"Very well, Sarene," he replied, taking a rather more personal approach of addressing her as he made to take her hand in his and lower himself to his knees.

"Here I kneel," he began, "and give praise to the eternal beauty and benevolence of my God-Queen for allowing our destinies to entwine so. To arrange that our hearts, bodies and spirits would forever coil and join together as parts of a whole. I offer all of myself to you, with all things considered, for now and always. My heart for yours, my body for yours, my soul for yours, my strength for yours, my weakness for yours, my love for yours. If you would be my wife, I would be your husband and eternally bind my life to you. I hereby make this pledge on all things, that never will I be with another, that never will I dishonour you, that never will I do anything to harm you. That I will be yours in life and death and devote myself entirely to my beloved wife and our family."

With that said, he looked up at her, bracing for her reaction.

"And I, Sarene Iracot, the God-Queen of all of Viridian, pledge my heart, soul, and eternal life to you, Calor Elohan." Sarene's vow to Calor was much shorter than the man's but it was binding in contract. The God-Queen had seen many marriages before. She had expect some sort of change inside of her; a difference in her status. However, there was nothing. She did not feel any different. It was perplexing.

Maybe there had already been love for Calor Elohan or perhaps the God-Queen was not capable of true love.

"Come," Sarene said in a gentler tone, one that was not as serious as she usually voiced. It was softer, more feminine. Standing before Calor was the woman Sarene and not the God-Queen; his wife.

"Let us consummate the marriage tonight and tomorrow," Sarene said, pausing for a moment. "Tomorrow shall begin our new rule over Viridian."

"Very well, I'll spend the night in your chambers," he replied, as he slowly began to remove his coat. "Tomorrow will involve dangerous work, after all, and if our marriage is to be short then we should make the most of it."

Happiness filled him. Finally he would spend time with her, time far more meaningful than "quality" time. They were literally about to consummate their marriage. The marriage between him, humble ex-Dragoon, and her, Sarene Iracot - the rightful God-Queen of all Althea. He could barely believe what was happening - what was about to happen. His heart pounded against his chest and he couldn't imagine possibly feeling happier than he did now for the rest of his life.

So why did it feel so... Dark?

Something was wrong. He could feel it, but he couldn't find it. It lingered in the back of his mind like a stray thought slowly pushing to the forefront of his mind. No matter... There was nothing he could do but take Sarene in his arms and join her on the bed until morning.

The sun poured through the windows of Sarene Iracot's chambers and a light breeze billowed out the sheer curtains. The floor-to-ceiling windows had been opened during the evening to freshen the scent of the room. Calor and his God-Queen had made love the entire night until Sarene had insisted they both needed rest. The silken sheets were ruined from their sweat and fluids.

Sarene Iracot laid sprawled out on the messed sheets, still naked, and as plain as any mortal woman. The sunlight ran over her skin and began to warm her. The songs of the birds were her calling to awaken and begin the new regime of rule over Viridian.

The God-Queen sat up in her enormous bed and pulled the waist-length strands of black hair out of her face. Her turquoise eyes roved over the room and saw that it had been untouched since the night previous. The servants had not yet arrived to clean the mess Sarene had made in her tantrum.

Sarene pulled a robe over her body and tightened the sash that wound around it. There was an ache between her legs; a soreness. It was painful to walk. She looked back to the sheets to see her blood stained on them. Calor would have to burn them or dispose of them in another manner. There could be no evidence that she could bleed, or that she was mortal just like any other woman.

Entering the adjoining room, the God-Queen drew her own hot bath. She sank down into the depths of the bath and sighed at how it took away her womanly pains. There was another sensation in her body, one that she could not place. Something had changed and Sarene felt a feeling of foreboding.

She ducked beneath the waters, and for a short moment, drowned herself away from the world.
