Background: Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Joe Blake began his political career at a young age as a local activist. After becoming the youngest Mayor in Pittsburgh's history at age 25, Blake spent eight years reforming the city's corrupt political landscape before moving on to the House of Representatives, representing Pennsylvania's 14th district. In Washington, Blake found himself a ready platform for his own idealistic brand of politics. Having been one of the most visible young members and considered a rising star in the party, Blake was persuaded to enter the Democratic primaries, which he won after a close contest with a tough opponent whom would later become his running mate, Jim Lewis. His win in November came easier as the incumbent President, Richard Keller, was embroiled in scandal and highly unpopular, allowing the reformist Blake an easy victory.
