The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 5 authors
"Mom is it okay if I hang out for a little?" He asked, although he knew she wouldn't care at all. It's not like she was actually his mother.
Tyler nodded as she spoke, wanting to ask questions, but not wanting to pry. As friendly as Kelsey seemed, it honestly felt like she was holding back. She seemed to have a lot of interesting things about her, but what they were, he had no idea. "Yeah i understand. I probably won't leave the house much, seeing as I know no one," he said, being completely honest, but in reality, he was a fast friend maker.
"Well, I've already been thinking about how I'm gunna at least try and throw a party. I mean, have you seen this house?" He shrugged, grinning. "You'll be at the top of the guest list." Tyler over heard Jayson talking about heading up to her room, and he decided he'd do the same. It wasn't necessarily the best environment to meet someone when you were standing in a room of 8 others. "Wanna go upstairs? I'm not gunna lie, it's pretty crowded down here."
Having just met someone wasn't a very good time to have anti-depressant medication lying around and even around her 'family' it wasn't something she wanted to discuss or have them see. Her foster parents knew about them of course but her foster sibling well that would be one hell of an explanation if they were to see them next to her "special case" then it'd be even worse so to prevent that she hides those things and now had no reason to worry about Thomas finding them. SHe wanted to seem normal and get to know him normally without him thinking something was very wrong with her.
As they entered Jayson's room, he grinned. Yes, he had already been in here, but it was nice to really take in the little things she had used to decorate it and make it her own. He saw her ipod on the dock speaker, and grinned. "So what type of music do you like?
Tyler started walking towards his room, grinning as Kelsey followed. The thought of her coming to his party made him excited, he would be happy to spend more time with her. He knew this house had quite a rep, but high school kids tended to flock anywhere that would have booze, he'd learned from his past.
"I'm pretty good at convincing people," he said, shrugging as they got to his room. He picked up his acoustic guitar from the bed, and moved it to it's stand to make space for Kelsey to sit. Other than that guitar, in his room he had his bed, dresser, desk, and two drums, but not a whole drum set. His foster parents had been kind, buying him a guitar and some drums, as well as a couple longboards, but TYler had never felt right taking such expensive things, but it wasn't necessarily bad.
"So what school do you go to?" He asked, turning to face Kelsey.
She asked now feeling as if she was babbling. Jayson really wanted to seem normal at least to him as even though he seemed like a nice person she didn't want him to see her as weird or crazy. Had it been anyone else she wouldn't have cared but since it was him it mattered much more to her. Jayson felt glad that on her first day she seemed to have made a friend.
Goodness, she was so gorgeous. Maybe it was the way she held herself, her shoulders pushed back and back straight, or maybe it was her perfect jaw structure. Either way, she was the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen.
Tyler sat down next to Kelsey, leaning back on his arm that was closer to her so he turned toward her, chest diagonal. He noticed after he asked the question that Kelsey looked slightly confused, and it had taken her quite a while to answer. When she tilted her head, it seemed as though she wasn't going to answer, but soon after, she did. Maybe it had taken her so long to answer because she was embarrassed, but that seemed unlikely. Kelysey seemed pretty confident.
He nodded his head, a soft and natural smile finding its way onto his face. "Whatever the local highschool in town is," he said, shrugging. "I mean, I could be going into college this year, but I'd be young for my grade. I used to be, but I got held back a while ago due to some... problems where I missed a few months in school." After speaking, he regretted it. Mentioning things like that usually led to questioning, and in all honesty when he explained his past situation to people, they often got scared of him, or began to pity him. If that were the case, which he really hoped it wasn't, maybe it would be better to get it out of the way now, before he fell to hard for her.
"O-Or not whichever works for you is fine with me." She mentally cursed herself for stuttering. She hated that about herself as when she would sometimes become embaressed she became a stuttering, babbling fool. She just hoped that Thomas hadn't noticed her stutter.
"I know people probably question you a lot because they're curious and such about what happened," she began, not really sure where she was going with this. "But I'm not going to do that. You can tell me what you want, when you want to. I don't mind. Sure, I'm curious, but that's not any of my business." Once the words were out of her mouth, she just smiled. She wasn't really sure what possessed her to say those things, but she didn't regret it. Maybe she didn't want to be nosy this early on, or maybe she just trusted him enough to tell him when he chose to.
He took her offering and sat down on the bed, next to her, not losing eye contact as she spoke. "You are quite talented," he said quietly, already interested in this human girl. As she stuttered, his grin grew, and he nodded, looking at her. "Yeah, I would like that a lot, But, if you don't want to, you don't have to. And if you want to do it later, you can do it then." He said, wanting her to be comfortable. That's all he really wanted.
Tyler watched Kelsey's reply, unable to hold a small smile off his face. He could tell on the inside she was asking questions, though some how had the restraint not to ask them. He saw her pull down her sleeves, then hide them under her arms, and though he wondered why she did this, he wasn't about to ask.
He watched her as she spoke, eyes shifting from her mouth to her eyes, and back again. He let out his breath that he didn't even know he had been holding. It was weird. When he assumed she would want to know, he felt completely uncomfortable with the thought of telling her. But now that she was alright with him telling her whenever, he felt completely comfortable with telling her.
"Well, thanks for that," he started, pulling his eye contact and looking down at his lap. "But I think I can tell you." He looked back up at her. "So, as you may or may not know, Mr and Mrs Preston are foster parents. Guess who their real kids are and who are fosters."
She had moved her hand from the strings now noticing her sleeves were up and showing her scars. Jayson quickly pulled down her sleeves hoping he didn't notice her scars as she was sure he noticed her pulling it down so fast.
Kelsey bit her lower lip as she thought about the last child. Eventually she decided on guessing with the last child. "Um, okay. I'm going to say Whitney is a biological child, Jayson is a foster, you're a foster, and the little girl I'm going to say she's a biological?" Kelsey put her shoulders up slightly, as if she were going to shrug them. "I have no idea with the youngest child." She put her shoulders down and smiled slightly.
His eyes were drawn back up to her face when she talked, shrugging. "I don't care," he said, seeing her pull her shirt down out of the corner of his eye. "Whatever is your favorite," he said, grinning.
Tyler could tell Kelsey was thrown off guard at his statement, and he grinned. She was such an interesting girl. He grinned as she talked, listening and staying silent as she thought. When he heard her speak, he was impressed. She was very close. "Very close," he said, grinning, "but you got one wrong. Ellie- the youngest. She's a foster as well."
Reminding himself of what he was telling her about, he let his shoulders sag, and looked back at her face. "So, when I was younger, before I got put here, I'd been in a lot of foster house. This is my 16th actually, and I came here when I was fourteen. No correction, the day before my fourteenth birthday. You following so far?" He gave her a shy grin, biting the corner of his lip. He might scare her away with the rest of the story.
"What do you like to do for fun?" she asked him now placing the guitar down on her bed. If he wished to he could pick it up as if it was one of his talents she'd be happy to see it. In fact she'd just be happy to spend time with him in general.
Tyler asked if she was following and she nodded her head. "Yes. On your last day of being thirteen you came here. This is your sixteenth home. I'm listening, keep going." Kelsey gave him a reassuring smile, as if telling him she could handle whatever he was about to tell her.
He rubbed his hand on his pants, a little nervous. "I have really good aim. I mean really good aim. I can throw a knife from 60 feet away and hit a bullseye." He nervously bit his lip, taking a breath. "And I'm kinda good at sports. But I stopped playing... a while ago," he said, remembering the last time he'd played soccer at a game, scoring the winning goal. Those were the days, when he could walk around as he pleased. "And i know how to use a bow and arrow." Looking at her, he waited to see her reaction.
Tyler watched her speak, taking her smile as a green light to continue. "Alright so the house I was in before here, well, I liked it a lot. You know, cool mom, made cookies every other day from scratch, a son a year older than me who liked playing with me and was a great friend, for only knowing him a few months and a dad would was almost always working, but never really did anything bad. And yeah, of course I didn't really fit in with the family, but we got along well enough. I mean, there were obvious things that made it clear i was just the foster kid, but I'd almost forgotten, more or less. And so the boy had a soccer tournament that took him to florida for the weekend, and his mom took him. They offered for me to go, but I had a lot of school work and didn't want to intrude." He said, everything coming out as though it was a far off memory.
"So it was just me and the dad," he started, pausing to take a deep breath. "He was a really big man you know, probably 6'5, though pretty lean. And muscular. So basically, very, very scary for a prepubescent teen," Tyler paused, laughing lightly.
"I learned to sing from my mother actually while piano and guitar were learned in secret within the other foster home." she mentally cursed herself for blurting out too much information again. Now she guessed he found her to be a freak or something. She didn't mean to blurt it out and she wasn't even sure if he heard all of it but she was quessing he did.
He laughed lightly, but Kelsey's expression remained the same. Her eyes seemed to droop with sorrow of what could have happened, and she looked at the floor. What came next? A thirteen year old boy being left alone with his foster father. Apparently they hadn't seen each other much do to work, but what did the father think of his newest child? It was possible he stayed at work longer to avoid him, but what dad would do that to his child? Kelsey pushed the thought away and looked back at Tyler, thinking of what could have happened to land him in the hospital. The obvious stuck out to her, but she wouldn't know for sure until she questioned him. So that's what she did. "Did he hurt you?" Her voice was barely above a whisper, as if uttering the four words could cause the Earth to crumble right then and there.
He was surprised to hear she was a foster child, though as he thought about it, she didn't look that much like the parents. He didn't let the surprise show on his face. He adjusted himself slightly so he was looking more directly at her, and he grinned. "That's incredible," he said, pulling his feet up so he was sitting criss cross. "I wish I could play an instrument, any instrument. Do you write songs?"
Tyler gave a bitter laugh, his eyes going cold. He nodded, his eyes wandering the room, till he put them on her face again, but he couldn't keep them there for so long. Talking about something so horrible seemed wrong in the presence of someone so pretty, so he let them fall upon his drums as he spoke.
"I came home from school one day. I'd fallen earlier during gym class, and so I had a huge bruise on my leg. It was like, the size of my fist," he said, holding his fist up. "And I thought it was awesome. During dinner that night, the dad, he noticed. He asked where it was from, then assumed i was lying, that I'd gotten in a fight, and lost. And I don't know how his mind made him think this was okay, but some how he thought that if I could lie about that, I could lie about more bruises. So he hit me."
At this point, Tyler paused, stopping his twiddling fingers. "And then again. And I stood up from my chair, slowly walking away. I could tell from his smell that he was drunk. And I was walking down the hall and he called after me. What are you doing, he said. Where you going kiddo, I just want to talk. And I don't know a why I did it, but i stopped, and turned around. He had the fire poker in his hand, and he swung it at me." He turned back to look at Kelsey. "It came this close to puncturing my lungs," he said, holding up his fingers with a small space between them. Then he dropped his hand. "I don't really remember what happened next, it's a little foggy," Tyler said, his brow furrowing. "He hit me, a couple more times, i fell over, his my head on the stair case banister, and thats it." His eyes lightened up, a light smile fitting his face.
"I woke up in the hospital the next day, then I came here."
She wasn't sure if he attended the local school or if he attended school elsewhere. Then there was alternative that he could be homeschooled. It didn't seem unlikely nowadays as homeschool was something that wasn't so surprising or rare. "Oh and I'm sure either Tyler or Whitney are planning on throwing a party so when it does happen I'd be happy to see you there if you'd want to come."
Before she knew what she was doing, Kelsey felt herself move her left hand out from under her leg, and place it softly on top of Tyler's own larger hand. After her death, she was never a touchy-feely person. When she had been alive, she would hug any and everyone. However, with her body mutilated, it was a different game. It was hard for her to shake the new resident's hands sometimes, but she had to do it. Small, random gestures like this were extremely rare. Her sleeve was still up for the most part, but it was lower than usual. In stead of being below her finger nails it was right above her knuckles. From her knuckles down, that's where the third degree burns started. Her own ugly scars she didn't like revealing to others. "It still hurts to talk about it?" She questioned, turning her gaze from their hands to his face. "I'm sorry you went through that, but I want you to know I think no less of you because of something like that. If anything, you're a little hero in my book." She smiled at that, a genuine one, completely meaning what she said.
"Yeah, if I'm invited I'll be sure to be there." He said, a grin forming. He loved when people through parties at this house, and the other ghosts seemed to as well since they could mess with even more people, and no one would think any of it as most people would be intoxicated. He was excited.
Tyler watched Kelsey's reaction, and when she drew her gaze away he assumed he'd blown it. That he had just ruined any chance of anything between them for some pretty face. But when her hand slid over to his, it seemed otherwise, as their eyes made contact and he held them, his fingers slipping between hers and interlocking. A grin fitted on his face as he moved to be laying on his side, facing her and slightly closer to her now.
"It's fine." he said, shrugging. "Everyone has something they've gone through, I'm happy I got mine out of the way." He said, honestly, biting his lip and looking at her.
