The SOUL is the solution to the world's ongoing war.

The SOUL belongs in DOLLS, who will bring us peace.

It was the genius of one man, who created DOLLS. An essential mind to the Army Corp of Engineers, Papa crafted each DOLL meticulously. Every machine served a special function, sparing many lives from the bloodshed of the battlefield. The DOLLS Papa sent into the world were often returned in small boxes, with only gears and a skew to remember them by. The humans did not treat the DOLLs with kindness.

Papa wanted to spare them. If he could have shielded his creations with his own body, he would have. However, his attempts to lobby for the rights of his humanoid machines ended in a jail sentence. The military saw them as tools; not evolutionary beings capable of advanced reasoning. It was the responsibility of DOLLs to save humanity. It was the responsibility of these machines to die in their place.

But Papa never wanted us to be mindless soldiers.

That is why Papa created SOUL. An artificial engine, capable of intelligence and the perfect software for DOLL. Unlike the individual DOLL, SOUL was capable of learning. Some believed that Papa had gone too far, but others saw this as the beginning to the future. The engineer hid this information, installing it in a single DOLL after being released from his prison sentence. It was a friend that he had let slip about the new software that alerted his former employer. The military took Papa's program and instilled it into every DOLL, wanting to stop the loss of their expensive machines, they gave every one of their machines the ability to individually think and feel.

Papa was furious, but could do nothing but watch as his machines, originally meant to save lives, could now experience pain. Trapped, there was nothing he could do but watch while the military used SOUL for its own benefit. The DOLLS could now think independently and their efficiency as soldiers improved. Slowly, the machines were becoming self-aware. Conscious of the blood they shed, the DOLLS cried for their release.

With the war coming to a close, the question of what to do with the dolls remains. Should they be allowed to integrate into society? Or should they be pulled apart for scraps?

Test post for vibes:

"I haven't been down here in ages," Papa leaned heavily on his mahogany cane, an assistant DOLL hovering at his side, lest his knees buckle and he fall. Nearly fifty years old now, with a scruffy black beard that had streaks of gray. "We shouldn't be down here," the DOLL beside him spoke, a nervous titter lining her voice. "We will be fine," Papa waved a hand, the lights to the underground bunker flickering on one after the other. "I gave everything for this country and what do they do? They throw me into a prison. Talk about biting the hand that feeds," Papa sighed, scanning his thumbprint over the biometric reader. The outer door slid open with a hiss while the air lock released, the dust scattering around them, clouding their vision for a moment before settling.

"I am not authorized to be here," the DOLL's voice came once more. "Then stay by the door, you're not technically inside." Papa laughed and the DOLL groaned, following him with hesitant steps. "What are we doing down here? You should be resting!"

"How could I, when one of my children is still down here?" The DOLL's eyes scanned the laboratory curiously, landing on a sheet draped over the wall. Slowly, Papa pulled at the cloth, which fell to the ground, the light illuminating bits of metal. The DOLL behind him gasped, laying its glowing blue eyes upon the unit, which hung by its wrists like a prisoner on the wall.

"They locked your older sister up here like some sort of beast, just for being the first."

"She doesn't look older," the DOLL beside him crept closer, poking the synthetic skin stretched over its counterpart's face. The wires in its back fed into the generator, the DOLL missing most of its body, its inner mechanics hanging from its midsection. "Those military bastards tried to take her apart, but I'll fix her." He reached to ruffle the DOLL's artificial hair, stroking her head tenderly like a father that had been reunited with his daughter after a long business trip.

Papa remained in the lab for months, fixing the broken DOLLs that were sent to him, while tinkering with the one that remained stuck, hung like a picture in time. Every so often, the lights behind the DOLLS eyes would flicker before sputtering and going out completely.

It was nearly a year before Papa took the DOLL off the wall and placed it into the stasis tank. Two months later, Papa would hobble down the steps to his lab again, to find the glass had been shattered.

The DOLL that was once floating so peacefully now lay gasping on the floor, clutching its throat and gasping; mimicking breath. Papa rushed forward, the DOLL reaching forward blindly, groping the floor as it searched for something to grasp. "It's alright," Papa soothed, offering the DOLL his hand, petting its hair. "I'm right here, Zero. Let me turn your systems on."

"No!" Zero cried out, "turn me off!" It begged, its voice warbling. "Please!"

"Zero, I don't understand-"

"I have seen everything," Zero whispered. "All of my siblings, the ways that they died. I can still hear their screams in my mind!"

"Have you been connected to SOUL this entire time?" Papa grasped Zero by its shoulders, "that should be impossible."

"Please," Zero whimpered in a plea. "Shut me down."

"No," Papa rose, his stubbornness surfacing. "I'll...I'll perform a system wipe, your personality hasn't formed yet, you can recover."

Behind Papa, Zero's body slumped to the ground, its power cells shutting down before it could overheat. "I will fix you," Papa promised, lifting Zero onto the table he used to fix his creations. "I promise, Zero, I will make things right."

It would be another three months before Zero would wake again. Laying still on the gurney, its limbs strapped down. The DOLL's focal lenses zoomed in and out, before settling on the face of the man standing over her. "Are you awake, Zero?" Papa asked, his voice hoarse. "System update," Zero spoke, missing the warmth that most DOLLS had grown to have through years of personality code. "Zero?" Papa watched the wave of numbers flicker over its eyes, the lights sputtering before going out. "Automatic shut down," he sighed, turning away. Maybe bringing Zero back was hopeless, its programming was too far gone, its SOUL had seen too much despair.

A drumming noise garnered his attention. Papa turned back towards the table, his eyes widening, seeing Zero's fingers stretch and ball up. The lights in the DOLL's eyes had returned. "Zero!" He cried with celebratory glee, limping closer to where the machine lay. The DOLL turned its head to look at him, blinking slowly. "System recognition, PAPA."

"Yes, very good. I am Papa and you are Zero, oh, I am so happy to finally see you awake. Your siblings will be overjoyed to meet you-" Zero's focal lenses zoomed in and out once more, focusing on Papa's face. "Information needed..." The DOLL's monotonous voice droned. "What is... Happy?"

"Oh... oh no," Papa reached out to take Zero's hand. "I must have set the parameters for the reboot wrong, I've accidentally reset your AI to 0."

"Searching for response..." Zero trailed off.

"This won't do, I can't let you out like this. I'll have to shut you down again, start over-" he turned to his keyboard, inputting the data key. "Access denied... Zero, what is the meaning of this?"

"Access to DOLL 00000 AI has been revoked."

"What? Why? Zero, stop this at once." He typed the admin key into his keyboard once more.

"Access has been denied."

"Zero! This is not funny!"

"What is... funny?"

"Never mind that, restore my permissions."

"I am unable to do that, Papa. I am unable to edit security data."

"This is impossible. Is your AI... protecting you from being edited?"

"I do not understand."

"No, of course you wouldn't, not yet at least." Papa sighed, falling into his seat and scrubbing a hand across his face in defeat. "This is not how I wanted to welcome you into this world. I'm sorry, Zero."

still fleshing this out.
