The rising sun caked the landscape from atop this lone mausoleum, a lone figure gazing into this bright new landscape. No one around, a solitary scene as newly departed souls whisked past. Laments of woe and grief were all that rang out in this lone scene. No one else could hear these cries, no one else but him. The figure stood and started to climb down, wanting to leave this place. A few thoughts began to probe into his mind, shutting his eyes and drowning out the cries and noise. A few moments later the figure spoke, to anyone else it would seem as if he was talking to no one but to him he spoke to the translucent image of a small boy. "Shh little one, don't cry. Soon you'll be safe and warm with those who love you." The boy looked up at him for a moment before starting to ascend like the others, leaving this man alone in this cemetery. He had to leave, to return to watching over those who have not left this world yet. He had to adopt his chosen name. Lucas, an ironic name for him. He walked through the streets, most people driving to work at this time. Walking into town, people were walking minding their own schedules and wandering around. An anonymous blob of people is all this was, nothing more nothing less. a few curious glances and Lucas saw something that sparked familiarity. A woman, one he had ran into before. She looked that same, yet different. She jogged down the street, passing his sight without a second look. He moved through the crowds, something was different about this woman, a name to go along with the face. He had no idea what it was but he followed, trying to catch up with her to get one last look.

Thea kept up her jog, going as far as the park before slowing to a stop. She needed a bit of a breather. Her hair was plastered to her forehead with sweat, and she suddenly regretted taking a shower that morning. It had been a wasted effort. Althea shook her head to herself, putting her hands on her hips to open up her airways and allow her to regain her breath better as she continued walking. She had learner long ago in gym class that it was bad to get your heart rate up and then just stop moving. You had to keep going at some activity to let your heart rate slow down. Besides, it was absolutely gorgeous outside.

Since it was early, it wasn't dreadfully hot yet, as it could get in the summer. In fact, there was even a pleasant breeze that carried the scent of freshly cut grass and nature. Althea took a deep breath and looked around. The trees towered over her with leaves of jade green. The sunlight would stream through at points, turning her hair a lighter shade of brown where it hit. When it got in her eyes it turned her deep chocolate eyes to a more amber color. The sunlight helped to add a healthy glow to her skin. She absolutely loved being outside on days like this. She still had her music blasting in her ears, and she decided to take the headphones out and heard footsteps behind her. She saw a man, it seemed, who was trying to catch up to her. He looked familiar in a déja-vu kind of way. However, the fact that he was trying to catch up with her kind of scared her. What could he possibly want from her? She turned and began walking at a quicker pace than before, regretting not bringing her cell phone.

This woman was picking up the pace, turning back to look at him almost afraid. "Wait, wait!" Lucas had to know who she was. She looked so familiar, so close. He picked up his pace to catch up to her, wanting her to stop. "Wait. Please, let me talk to you. I think I know you" His heart raced, he had to see her face. He was so close, something flashed in his mind. A visage of someone he knew. Someone from before, from a time in heaven. Something was off though, like an imperfect picture. A name, she had to have a name. He needed to hear her, to know who she was. He ran beside her, trying to look at her face. "Please, wait. I just want to talk." His gaze looked over to see her nervous and scared, an apologetic look escaped his face. He sighed, starting to slow down a bit. "Can we talk for a bit?"

Thea cringed when she heard the man's voice. He wasn't going to just let her go, that was becoming obvious. She knew enough to defend herself if necessary, so she decided to stop, turning to look the man straight in the face. He was strikingly handsome, enough to make her lose her train of thought for a moment. An overwhelming sense of déja-vu hit her again as she look him in the eye. Quickly, she looked elsewhere. "What do you want?" She asked, her voice nervous and defensive. She had no idea who this guy was, and the amount of interest he was taking in her was a little unsettling. She couldn't bring herself to look him in the eye again, too nervous. She blushed deeply as she talked. She didn't normally talk to anyone she didn't know, and tended to think herself socially awkward with new people. After a bit, the silence was unbearable. "Well? What is it that you wanted?" Her voice was higher than it normally was because of the newness of this person to her. She wasn't comfortable with him yet.

Lucas looked over this woman, her voice so familiar. "Do you, do you know me?" He looked over this woman, she was so familiar. For a while he tried to figure out who she was. After a while it struck him. He ran into her before. To be exact past incarnations, but she was different. Something about her seemed inhuman, almost angelic. He sighed a bit, he probably looked insane to her. "I'm sorry. You looked like someone I knew. I'm Lucas." He tried to give a smile, a feeling of embarrassment inside him. He looked at this woman, nervous and awkward around mortals. Rule one, don't associate with mortals. He gave this woman a soft smile, trying to keep from being awkward. "I, uh, should I go?" He looked at her nervously, his heart pounding in his throat as he looked at her. God, imagine how she feels. Some crazy man running up to try and talk to her. Stupid. He looked away, blushing a bit as he sat in self loathing. He looked over at the woman once again, waiting for her response.

She watched as the man stumbled over his words, instantly feeling bad for him. Her gaze toward him softened and she was able to look him in the face again. She gave him a kind and understanding smile. "I don't think I know you, I'm sorry. I'm Althea. Althea Anael." She extended her hand for him to shake. "You don't have to go. I'm sorry, I was just a bit skittish at first." She laughed nervously, running her hand through her hair. The sun was getting in her eyes and it was bothering her a little bit. But regardless, she saw this guy was obviously embarrassed. "Hey, don't be so hard on yourself." She gently patted his shoulder even though he was very much taller than her. "It was an honest mistake, people do it all the time. We're only human." She offered up another smile, hoping to help him relax just a bit. She wanted to help him.

Lucas gave this woman a smile. Althea was her name, she gave him a soft smile. He looked at her softly. "Of course. We all make mistakes." He looked at her with a soft glance. He shook her hand a bit before looking into her eyes. Something about her was still familiar but he could press on that. "Where are you off to?" He looked around a bit, things changed over the years. He was fond of this place, strange as he has traveled everywhere. He looked back at Althea, wondering why she looked so familiar. He has ran into her past incarnations but they were different. He softly smiled, looking over from her to the rising sun. "Want some company? Anywhere you need to be?" He tried to shirk off that feeling as he looked at her.

Thea shrugged her shoulders a bit. "No where in particular. I go on a jog every morning." She said to him after he asked where she was going. She never really knew where she was going. She just went usually. She looked back to the man in front of her and had to admit, he did seem vaguely familiar. Had she seen anyone else with those amber eyes? Or was it something in those eyes that drew her attention? She didn't quite know. But she figured she shouldn't ponder too long over it. After all, she had just been asked a question. "I don't mind the company. I'm just killing time, really. Nothing to do during the summer." She shrugged her shoulders and sighed slightly. "I'm done jogging for now, so if you had anything in mind... I'm probably not great to be seen with in public right now." She laughed in self-humility. "I'm probably kind of gross from the jog."

Lucas smiled a bit, looking at Althea with a small bit of nervousness. "I had nowhere in mind. I've got nowhere to be." Something about her was so familiar, he couldn't shake it. Althea Anael. Althea. Anael. Anael... Anael... Realization struck him, his eyes widened a bit. How could he not see it before? Finally he spoke again, not wanting to betray an air of awkwardness. "Actually... There was somewhere I needed to be for a bit. Only for a bit, care to join me?" He gave her a small smile, his voice felt sweeter, more hopeful. He tried his best to hide some enthusiasm. Seeing her, he noticed everything about her was so much like how she was before. No doubt was left, something lingered in his mind, something that perturbed him. Does she recognize me? She didn't say anything. What if I'm wasting my time. Her eyes shone to him, he could see her now. He needed to know if she could remember him.

Althea watched his face with a slight curiousity. He seemed to have some sort of epiphany, she could see it in his eyes. About what, he had no idea. Maybe it had to do with this new place that he suddenly needed to be. There was a new quality to his voice. A quality she had dreamed to hear in her own boyfriend's voice. Why was a complete stranger sounding more in love with her than her own boyfriend? The thought made her stomach quiver anxiously. Randall had been a bit distant to her lately... No, Randall loved her and she knew it. This stranger was simply being friendly. She smiled kindly at Lucas and nodded her head. "Sure, I'll come with, as long as it's no trouble." She looked around. "Uh, which way do we go?" For some reason, she felt like holding his hand. Though she figured that was because when she walked with Randall they always held hands, so it was habit. Regardless, just to be safe, she put her hands in her pockets.

Lucas gave her a wider smile, pointing out towards the cemetery. "I have to take care of the grounds around there." A lie, but he had to see if she could still see the spirits of the departed. He led her to the gate, listening to the soft laments of those waiting. He hated the sounds of the recently departed but he had to know. "I'm sorry to drag you along, I just need to take care of a few last things." He smiled a bit, seeing the morning sun shine on her. It was a thing of beauty. He attended to a few pieces of litter, keeping the facade a bit. The cries struck holes in his heart but he had to know if she could hear them. He had to help her remember. He looked over to her, smiling softly yet sadly looking at her. "Do you hear that?" His voice cracked a bit, the tale of a mother lost and looking for her daughter ringing into his ears as he looked at her. The spirit of the mother called for her daughter, unrest as she waited for a response. He waited for Anael to say she heard, to say she remembered him. He needed to hear it, to know she could still remember him. The rebellion was so long ago. So many years, so much time wasted. He needed her to remember.

Althea had followed him reluctantly to the cemetery. She always hated these places. They made her so very sad to look at, especially with what had happened with her mother. In fact, she believed this was the cemetery in which she was buried. An old wound in her heart opened up once more as she looked around. They had stopped in front of a headstone and he was working on whatever was covering the ground. When asked if she heard something, she listened closely. "No, I don't. Why?" She may not have heard anything, but she felt as if there were other people all around her. A feeling she always got in cemeteries. She always hated it. She noticed that he seemed to be in pain as well. She looked over at a headstone nearby and her eyes welled with tears as her mouth opened and she fell to her knees. She threw her arms around the headstone and sobbed for the first time in a long time over her dead mother.

As Althea knelt to the head stone a feeling of remorse crept onto Lucas's face, with a slight motion he knelt beside her. He turned his head a bit to read the headstone and a sting of guilt plucked inside him. He looked over to see the woman still calling for her daughter, unable to see her as she wept at the grave. Something was wrong, she could see him as all the dead can see those who come from Heaven or Hell. Is she truly mortal? Did she sacrifice everything for this? Lucas looked over at Althea and whispered softly to her. "Do you need anything?" He wanted to hold her, to comfort her as he should but she didn't know him. She didn't remember him. The spirit looked over at him, asking for him to help. He couldn't say anything now, not with Anael beside him. He looked at her with a small smile, longing to hold her but restraining. He would be here for her no matter what she chose.

Althea managed to pull herself together when she heard Lucas speak. She wiped her eyes and sniffled a bit. "I'll be fine. I'm sorry. I just... haven't had time to grieve..." Althea stood up and brushed the dirt from her jeans, regaining her composure though her heart was still raw. She looked to Lucas with a small smile, trying to give the impression that she was alright. "Anything else you need to do? I would hate to keep you from your work." She looked around, still feeling like there was something, someone else there with them. She shivered slightly. "If you don't mind, I think I'll wait by the front gate." She said and hurried away, stopping right outside the cemetery and leaning against the fence, closing her eyes. Never had she ever shown such vulnerability in front of anyone. Yet she had felt as though he would protect her. She didn't feel exposed crying in front of him and she didn't know why. But she was going to find out if it was the last thing she did.

Lucas gave one look to the spirit at the grave, silently apologizing before heading to the cemetery gate. He was at a loss, she didn't remember and she couldn't see the spirits. He walked over to her and gave a soft smile. "I'm all wrapped up here. I don't have much else to do. Is there anywhere you would like to go? I'm here for you if you need me." His smile was soft, masking his despair as he opened the gate. He held the rusted gate open and smiled, "After you." His heart beat heavy in his chest as he looked into her eyes. He held the gate, looking back at the graves for a moment before returning his gaze to her.

Thea smiled gratefully to Lucas, walking out of the gate quickly, not wanting to be there anymore. "Thanks, but I think I'll be just fine." She smiled brightly, though the pain was evident in her eyes. "Wherever you want to go is fine with me." She said, desparately needing a distraction, any kind of distraction. She grabbed Lucas' arm, pulling him along. "I know the perfect place!" She said and started running, slipping her hand naturally in his as if she had known him her whole life instead of a few minutes. She hardly noticed though, she was racing ahead, dragging him along behind her. She moved to the woods, rushing under branches, leaping over rocks. Finally, she stopped in a small clearing next to a small brook, the rising sun shining through trees and branches onto the water. They were on a small outcropping above the brook and there was a small hill that then leveled to the bank of the brook. The grass was lush and there were some flowers here and there. She takes a deep breath in, still holding Lucas' hand, closing her eyes. A small smile forms across her lips. "This is where I feel most peaceful... like nothing can ever get to me, I feel safe here..." She realizes she is still holding his hand and lets go of it, blushing lightly. "Sorry." She mumbles, then sits on the outcropping, dangling her feet and looking off at the brook below and trees beyond.

Lucas followed behind, ducking under branches and doing his best to keep up with Althea. Finally she stopped at a brook, smiling and shutting her eyes. He looked over her, a soft smile forming on his face as well as he watched her. She let go of his hand and blushed a bit, mumbling sorry and sitting on the outcropping of the brook. He smiled at her and spoke. "Don't be sorry, it's ok." He looked around, enjoying the scenery before realizing where he was. He remembered this place, memories flooding into his mind. "Promise me you'll never leave Azrael." "I promise. I will never leave you, not even for a moment." Two figures, two lovers holding each other in their arms. Wings shining in the setting sun. The two embrace and stand at the outcropping of a brook for a while before leaning in and sharing a tender and loving kiss. The ultimate expression of love, of devotion. The two figures soon ascend, returning to the heavens, to their home. Something welled inside him. Something alien as he looked back to Althea, a smile on his face. The sound of her voice ringing in his ears like a chorus. How long had it been? How long since he had been here? It felt like an eternity, from a time when he felt the warmth of another in his life. He sat down beside her, smiling and wanting desperately to hold her. He wanted to tell her everything, but as he tried to form the words they caught in his throat so he smiled and sat beside her. He looked over at her with a smile, finally finding something to say. "This place is quite special to me too."

She looked over, slightly shocked to hear that this place was special to him as well. She had thought that this was her place alone. Yet, she knew that she had always felt as if something was missing... and for some reason, with Lucas here, it seemed everything was finally perfect in her private little place. It somehow made sense to her that it was special to him as well. As though it was right for them to share this place. "What's so special to you about this place?" She asked, turning to look him in the eyes. There was that déja vu again, hitting her. She had no idea where it came from. What was so familiar to her about this man she had just met? Her eyes searched his, looking for some past meeting she couldn't quite remember. It just wasn't there, not for her. His eyes seemed to hold some recognition, some distant memory. There was something else as well, she couldn't place her finger on it. No one had looked at her this way before. It was quite odd. "I have to tell you, you're the first person I've ever brought here. Not even my boyfriend has seen this place." She laughed a bit. "Funny, I don't show a place near and dear to my heart to the guy I've been dating for a year, but I show it to the guy I met half an hour ago."

Lucas gave Althea a small smile, looking into her eyes. "I made a promise to someone very dear to me." His words came out sweeter than he intended, a small blush coming across his face as he looked away. He kept his smile, sitting with her as she spoke. "Funny, I don't show a place near and dear to my heart to the guy I've been dating for a year, but I show it to the guy I met half an hour ago." A slight tinge grew in the back of Lucas's spine, though he laughed it off a bit for her sake. "Maybe we have some connection." He knew they had a connection, but he couldn't tell her. It burned inside him, he wanted to spill everything to her but he couldn't. He had to change the subject, he couldn't keep himself quiet like this. "So, tell me about yourself. I mean, I thought you were somebody I know and just ran up to you. But I want to know a little bit about you." Hopefully she would humor him, he needed to have something else to focus on. If he didn't he would start spewing out everything and she'd probably find him crazy or worse a freak.

Althea had heard the sweet tone in his voice, and a soft smile graced her lips. It felt almost as if he were talking about her. But of course he couldn't be. They had only just met, and this was the first time they had been here together, whether ot felt that way or not. When he said something about a connection, something warm grew inside her, the urge to say it was more. But of course she resisted. She felt guilty for even having the thought, and silently reprimanded herself in her head. She layed herself back, looking up at the sky and trees in the morning light, a neutral expression on her face as she kept battering away at herself in her mind. Her eyes seemed to grow darker with each passing moment. She looked over, being pulled out of her thoughts when Lucas asked her about herself. Her eyes lightened slightly as she became distracted with what to say. She shrugged her shoulders. "I dunno, there's really nothing special to know. I mean, it's just me after all."
