Introduction
One young human grew up playing with her father's Pokemon; pets that were once fierce battlers became babysitters and guardians when her parents were unable to watch her. One day, though, when she was looking through the library, she found a strange book. She looked through it, and was curious enough to rent it out and take it home. After the hour it took to avoid the Pokemon that had helped in taking care of her and raising her, she wandered into the nearby woods.
Reading the book out loud, even if it was just trying to sound out the foreign language, was a bad idea, she soon found. She passed out almost immediately afterwards, unable to stay awake. When she woke up, the book had disappeared, and instead there was a note.
"You've found my book, and now you've read it. You'll have to find the book to turn human again. But to do that...you'll have to find me."
Confused, she looked around herself, and tried to stand up. She collapsed. Worried, she looked down at her feet; maybe she had hurt them somehow? But, instead of her own feet and legs, she found furred legs, and paws. She began to panic. What had happened? She thought back to the note: to turn human again. She wasn't human anymore! She assumed she was some sort of Pokemon; she recognized the type of fur and paws she had. But how was she supposed to turn human again on her own?
Back at the village, her disappearance spread qiuckly. When she hadn't come home for dinner, her parents had started to worry. When she still wasn't anywhere to be found the next day, her parents started searching for her. When she was still missing by dinner that day, they called police for help. The entire village was searched for her, but to no avail. Still, every now and then someone would pause to look around, to see if maybe they missed something.
Now she searches for help, ignored by the villagers, sometimes even thought to be someone else's Pokemon. With no one to listen to her, how was she going to turn human again? Seeing as she found little help in the village, she instead decided to turn to Pokemon trainers. Surely one of them would be able to understand her? To help her out? And, even when she does find help, how much trouble will they really go through to find the book?

And no one else here seemed to be able to communicate with her, or even start to understand. She sat against a building, hanging her head. She was stuck like this, she was sure. If she couldn't find someone to help her, there was no way she'd turn human again. Even if she found the book, she wouldn't be able to speak it aloud. She was sure that had been the key to activating the spell. Her tails wrapped around her feet, keeping them warm against a sudden chilly wind. It wasn't really until then that she realized just how different she was from most other people here in the village. Had she seen a Pokemon looking as miserable as she felt, she'd have picked it up, taken it home, and taken care of it. But very few even looked at her, let alone offered to help her.
As the gust of wind died down, she stood back up, making her way towards the Pokemon Center. Most often, it was only used for people whose Pokemon had fallen ill, or had wandered off into the woods and been attacked, or a young Pokemon that had a small scratch, brought in by a small child who thought the scratch was a tragedy to happen to their Pokemon. Every now and then a trainer would pass through, though, and that was normally their first stop. There had been few trainers to pass through the village, and she doubted one owuld today, but she still found herself drawn to it. Maybe because she was a Pokemon now, and thought she'd find help there.
In any case, she sat outside the building, tails wrapped around her now wet paws; it had rained a few days before, and there were still puddles here and there. Her clumsiness had found her stumbling into a few of them, making her paws numb when another gust of cold wind blew through. She tried to dry her paws by licking at them, but gave up soon after a child stomped into a puddle nearby, making more than just her paws wet. Well, not she probably looked more like she felt. She let out a small, pathetic cry, more to complain than anything. She had stopped talking in general; the Pokemon didn't listen, and the people couldn't understand her. So what was the point? She lied down, covering herself as much as she could with her tails, leaving only her face exposed. She wanted to see what was going on and who was passing her, even if she couldn't get enough of their attention to get them to help her out.
"Be quiet...That sounded like a double negative, so it confused me..."
The Quilava beside him sighed. Sora had recalled the others so that they could rest, and to reduce the number of Pokémon telling him that he was going the wrong way. Even one was too many...
Standing on the hill that overlooked the town, Sora could see his first destination. The Pokémon Centre. His grumbling stomach had long since started telling him that he needed food, and the Pokémon Centre always had a decent supply of supplies to calm a hungry stomach. Making his way down into the town, he seen Quilava roll his eyes as Sora struggled to maintain a normal walking speed going down the hill. Once the ground had levelled out, Sora found himself in a flower garden. One that had a beautiful Beautifly fluttering around. It seemed too busy frolicking to even notice Sora so he continued on. Once he was in the town square, he turned and started to walk towards the Centre. He was about to walk in when he caught himself mid-stride. Turning his body slightly, Sora's met an usual sight. Lying just outside of the Pokémon Centre, was a Vulpix. A blue eyed, wet furred Vulpix, "Cool..."
Momentarily forgetting his hunger, he stepped closer to her, offering his hand for her to sniff, "C'mere...It's okay..." He smiled to the little thing, trying to make it feel at ease as much as possible...
She saw a little bit of hope in the action, though. He had noticed her, hadn't ignored and walked away from her. Maybe this was the chance she had been looking for. The thought made her give a quiet cry of surprise. He even had his own Pokemon, too; a Quilava loomed in the background, possibly his own Pokemon. She glanced between the two, wondering which would be best to talk to first. In the end, she tried to talk to both. At least that way, one of them was sure to understand her. But whether or not the human would even listen much...
The thought that he had only stopped because she was a Vulpix, a Pokemon hard to find in this area, crossed her mind. As far as she knew, there were no wild Vulpix in the area, aside from herself now. Still, she had to try.
"I need help...please..." She was somewhat frustrated; her voice wasn't even her own, it seemed. She was used to hearing her own voice, not the voice of a Vulpix. That was even more unsettling than the fact that she wasn't herself anymore. She had used to be so much more sound-orientated than anything else.
That's what Sora managed to interpret from the quiet, almost non-existent voice that emitted from the small form. Turning to Quilava to make sure he heard right, who responded with a nod. Turning back to the Vulpix, he inched slightly closer to her, "What's wrong little one?.." He asked, oblivious to the fact that they were the same age. A grumble sounded from his stomach again, reminding him to get food, "On second thought, maybe we should talk inside..." He stood upright again, and began to walk inside, gesturing to be followed...
Quilava, however, eyed the Vulpix, somewhat suspiciously, There's something weird about this one...I'd better watch Sora's back... It wasn't that he didn't trust her, but something about her just didn't sit right. She didn't feel like...well, like a Pokémon...
"C'mon then..." Quilava repeated the 'follow me' gesture that his friend had, and followed the boy inside...
She hurried to pick herself back up, to stand on all fours again. She had been in the Pokemon Center before, but it seemed different to her. Everything seemed much bigger than when she was a human, and it certainly didn't help that she had been shrunk a little since she had turned into a much smaller Pokemon. And she hadn't noticed all the smells when she was human, either. She twitched her ears unconsciously, hearing the different sound that footsteps made on tile rather than on cobblestone and dirt.
She looked up to the larger Pokemon and the trainer. "I'm not a little one..." she grumbled quietly to herself before straightening up and looking over the pair of them. He seemed to have at least partially understood what she was trying to say. At the very least, he had caught on to the fact that she was distressed and miserable. That alone might help her out...though she was unsure how much. She looked over her fur carefully, noting where she would need to start cleaning first. She'd have to worry about it later, of course. It was rude to do something like that, especially when someone was actually offering her some bit of help.
"Umm...thanks for letting me inside...I can't open doors on my own..." she offered, looking back up at the pair. That had been the hardest part; she couldn't get into her own room anymore! She looked back to the Quilava. "How much does he really understand, then?"
How much does he really understand, then?
"Hmm? Oh, Sora? Quite a bit actually. He won't really be able to understand you though. He hasn't met too many Vulpix, and those that he has were usually with a Trainer. He seems to have trouble speaking directly to Pokémon with other humans around. Me excluded, of course." There was a sense of joy about the way he said that, probably because Sora didn't care how weird he looked when he did talk to him, which made him feel good...
Just ahead, Sora was checking into the Pokémon Centre's lodging area before he went to get something to eat. He was planning to spend a night or two here, before moving on. On a bulletin board he seen a 'Missing' poster. It showed a picture of a girl. One who's blue eyes seemed strangely familiar to him, though he couldn't place where from. It showed that her name was Songrose, and that there was a cash reward for her safe return. It also listed some more details than Sora took note of, before moving on, Where have I seen those eyes...?
After getting his meal and sitting down, Sora finally looked back to the Vulpix and Quilava that were following him. Looking between them jokingly, "Are you two talking about me behind my back?" He said pointing his spoon at them accusingly...
She looked up as the human spoke to them again, and offered a hesitant smile. "Would it be any better if we talked about you in front of your face? Not that it was anything bad, of course..." She couldn't push this person too far; couldn't make him upset with her, or she'd never turn human again. She had seen his attention when he found the poster, and wondered if it was a good time to bring up the fact that that was her face on the poster; that she was actually human. It could wait, she decided, until she explained the full story. ...Well, when she could explain the full story, after he had learned enough to understand her. She would just have to settle from trying to explain a simplified version for now.
She sat, waching him eat, and tilted her head to one side. Had she seemed to...awkward eating when she was human? Well, from a Pokemon's standpoint, anyway. She hadn't been able to use silverware, and it just now seemed pointless; more dishes to wash for a Pokemon that couldn't use them. She stretched and started to lick her paws dry. She already felt bad about tracking some small puddles into the building from her wet paws, and she didn't want to leave any more behind. Besides, it would clean her fur and make it look so much better than it already did.
"By the way...how long will it take him to eat? I don't want to interrupt his meal with my little explanation of what I need help with."
Pix Vulway...how long pix it take Vul to eat? I don't Vul to Pixvul his meal with pul litpul Vulpix of what I need help pix.
Having gotten used to answering on little more than a vague idea of what they were saying, Sora decided to answer for himself, "Not too long. I never could eat slowly." He said between mouthfuls. Quilava nodded to Vulpix, and added, "He's not joking. I've seen him eat 5 plates of curry in about 20 minutes. It wasn't pretty..." Not wanting to stick his tongue out with a mouthful of food, Sora simply made the 'Mmgh' noise that usually accompanies the action instead.
Suddenly, Sora slapped himself on the forehead, "I forgot about everyone else!" Grabbing the Poke balls from his belt and and allowing them to open. From them came Cubone, Kirlia, Buizel and Smeargle. All of whom turned to look at the new Pokémon amongst them, although Cubone quickly lost interest. Sora then produced a bag of Pokémon food from his backpack, as well as a large bowl. Filling the bowl, he lay it down for them, "You as well." He said to the Vulpix, who seemed apprehensive...
Had her tastes really changed, too? She had so far just been eating berries and whatever she could find that was still edible, mainly food that little kids dropped, before it started to go bad. But to eat okemon food...she wasn't entirely sure. Still, she edged forward, doing her best not to push anyone else out of the way. After all, it was their meal before it was hers; they had gotten to it first, and it was their trainer. She dipped her nose in long enough to get a small piece and backed off, dropping it to investigate it, to sniff it. She had to learn the smells, anyway. She was even more hesitant, though, to actually eat it, but she did.
Well, at least it wasn't too bad. She found her way back in again and started eating with the rest of them. She paused after a minute and looked up at the trainer. He had understood what she was saying. She hadn't really noticed in the light of food showing up, but he had accurately answered her question without much pause. She didn't eat much before she backed out again, and went back to cleaning her paws. She paused long enough to ask, "How do you understand? Most people certainly don't."
How pix you Vulpistand? Most pulple certapix don't.
Sora was brought out of his thoughts suddenly by the question. He hadn't expected to be asked so soon, so he didn't have an explanation for her, "If I'm honest? I haven't a clue...I just...can. I have been able to since I was young, maybe even born. It usually takes me longer to get a grip of what a new Pokémon is saying though. I'm picking you up quicker than normal. Weird, huh?"
He dug his spoon into his meal again and raised it to his mouth, and swallowed it without having to chew much at all. Once the plate had been cleaned, he gave quick thanks (he forgot to before starting), and let out a sigh of relief, glad to have filled his stomach. Looking to the Pokémon, who were in the process of finishing their own meal, he noticed/realised that the Vulpix hadn't actually eat much, "What's wrong? Not hungry?"
"I never had much of an appetite to begin with. Besides, it's a food I've never tried before, and I don't know whether or not it will agree with my stomach. It's better to eat some and have to stay than eat a whole lot and lose it all." She rolled her eyes, then stood and stretched. "And it's not so wierd; it might make my situation easier for you to understand, anyway. Or at least, more believable." She hoped so, anyway. She sat down again, watching Sora.
"And, if you don't mind, I don't know how much longer I can stand to be like this, so let me know when it would be a convenient time to tell you." She was eager to get this over with; maybe he could help her to understand the Pokemon, too, when she was human. She understood them fine now...but there was no way she could understand them perfectly as a human.
Sme smells funny.
Sora was caught off guard by this , "Smeargle..." Sme does...
He hadn't noticed her moving closer and sniffing the Vulpix, and so was unsure how to react, a frame of mind that seemed to be getting more and more common around this newcomer. Suddenly what was said reached Sora, "What what do you mean 'Like this'? No time like the present if you're gonna be explaining something."
In other words: Spit it out. "You speak? Shock..." Sora said sarcastically, to the Cubone that had decided to say his piece, who responded with a 'Tch...' and an eye roll. Sora returned his attention to the Vulpix, ready to hear what she had to say...
"I'm not a Vulpix; I swear I'm not. I'm human, under some sort of spell. You saw the wanted poster, I know you did. That's me; that's what I'm supposed to look like. But I can't turn human again unless I can find the book that turned me into a Pokemon in the first place. That's where I need your help; I don't even know where to start looking for this book!" An unwilling cry escaped her; she was too upset to be able to hold that in.
"No one here will listen to me; none of my Daddy's Pokemon, or my Mom's Pokemon...I can't even get the attention of the other villagers!" Unconsciously, her tails wrapped around her paws; most of her tail movements were just reactions; she was still trying to learn to control her tails. She assumed that the tails wrapping around her paws was instinctive, probably offered some comfort to normal Vulpix. Still, it didn't matter. She watched Sora, waiting to see exactly how he would take her story.
"Cool!" Almost as soon as he said this, he slammed his hand over his mouth, as Quilava face-pawed, "N-not cool...Umm...Deep breath." He took his breath in and looked at her. She looked...pitiable, a phrase that Sora rarely used. It was clear that she believed this and that it greatly upset her, "Not cool...Sad...I don't know what I would do in your position...Mainly because I'm the only person I know who can talk to Pokémon..." He stood and moved over to the Vulp...No, Songrose, as the poster had called her. He scooped her up into his arms, before she had a chance to protest. He rubbed the top of her head with his finger. The longer he looked at her, the more he felt tears rise in his eyes, and a lump in his throat, "I'll help...I'll help..."
Sora didn't realise that if she was human, he would be holding her head against his chest, gently stroking her hair. Because of how...distant he felt from most other people, all he seen was the Vulpix cradled in his arms, it's eyes showing more sadness than it body ever could...
She paused, thinking quickly. Never had she been in an odder position. Even if she was human, this could be seen as a very odd position for her. She barely had friends, let alone human friends. "Well...I'm glad that you'll help, and everything...no one else will..." How could she protest against this? It was very unusual...and, really, she was a Pokemon now. It didn't seem so strange to her in that sense.
"But, well...we should get a move on, you know? We need to find this book...so I can turn human again...I have nothing against Pokemon, but I'm not one...and I've already managed to trip and stumble walking over a flat surface. I need to be human again."
"Umm...Can you wait for another day? I need to rest and resupply...Mostly rest...We got lost..."
No, you got us lost. And don't feel bad about that last part, Sora can trip over flat surfaces too.
Quilava.
"Anyway. I promise to help you get become you again...Just as soon as I've prepared for the journey that we're sure to be going on..."
While he hoped that he could help her quickly and move on like he had an odd tendency to do, something told him that it wasn't going to be that easy. For one thing, they were looking for a book, which was a vague enough statement as it is, and by the looks of things, she didn't have any idea where to start. We're gonna be wandering around for a little while...I know it...
He put her back down on the ground, making sure that she was steady before standing upright again. Buizel watched her closely, curious as to how she could have trouble walking on four legs. It seemed so natural to him, that he stopped realising how much balance, or practice, it took to do so...
"As soon as you've prepared, then." So the Pokemon knew the way, probably by scent, or something, but the human didn't. Well, as long as someone knew the way. She sat down after he had put her on the ground again, licking at one of her paws once more. The sooner she turned human again, the better. She needed to learn how to clean herself all over again now that she was a Vulpix. She felt like she was a very little kid again; learning to walk, learning to clean herself, the fact that everything was bigger than she was...if only she had kept enough sense to not read from that book in the first place!
"So, restocking on supplies, or resting first?"
"Resting...I don't think that I could make it back to a bed if I went traipsing around right now..."
He stood and took his plate back up to the counter, to save someone coming round to collect it. Then he gathered his things and went to the room that he had been given. Laying his belongings at the base of one of the beds, he noted that there was no bag or anything on the opposite bed, I've got the room to myself...
As everyone clambered into the room, Sora quickly claimed the spot at the top of the bed, to prevent a repeat of last town, where Quilava refused to move on the ground that he was there first...It didn't occur to Sora to recall him into the Pokéball until the next day...
Taking in a deep breath, he took a look around the room. It wasn't much different to the other lodging areas, and Sora had seen plenty of them. It was either them or camping, Sora hadn't slept in a proper house in a long time. Not that he minded of course...Maybe he was a little home-sick. Just a little...
Lying his head back, Sora closed his eyes gently, ready for sleep, I just hope that I can be of some help to her... He thought, one last quick feeling of doubt before drifting off...
Well, she had finally found someone to help her out...even though she wasn't entirely sure where to begin. She curled up, tails wrapped tightly around her, thinking hard and fast. She didn't know anyone that might do something like that...did she? She thought about it for a while before she was even able to get to sleep.
Like one of the gangs she had heard about, stealing Pokemon and doing whatever else they like to do. They certainly were mean enough..but why would they do anything to her? She had no Pokemon, and certainly hadn't given anyone from any gang any sort of trouble. And then...well, that other trainer might have planned something like this...but she wasn't so sure he had been smart enough for this. A Pokemon? ...No...Pokemon saw no need to write...and how could any Pokemon around here write? Most had paws, and couldn't hold somehing like a pencil. As she tried to figure it out, she drifted off to sleep.
"Three nights in a row...Damn..."
Rolling over, Sora put his feet down on the floor, careful not to tread on the various tails and paws that were sprawled around. Creeping out of the room, he decided a walk was best for his tiredness, or lack thereof. Before he got to the door, however there was a gentle knocking on the door. Quickly opening the door before anyone woke up, he was surprised to see Nurse Joy holding a sleeping Vulpix, "Is she your's?" She said quietly, "I seen her following you around earlier, and then I found he lying in one of the corners..."
With a tired sigh, Sora scratched the back of his head, "It's more that I'm gonna be travelling with her for a little while..." He took the small form into his arms and moved her to an empty spot on the spare bed, before bowing slightly to Nurse Joy. He decided that he still needed that walk. Letting the door quietly click shut, Sora walked with the Nurse to the main area, "I couldn't help but notice you converse with them earlier..." She thought for a second, "Most trainers I see seem to talk at their Pokémon, but you don't. You talked to them...I have to admit that it was a little weird to see at first..." Sora tried not to show how much that sentence stung, but Joy seemed to notice, "N-Not to say you're weird...I-I mean...Oh, dear..."
Sora quickly replied, "No...Don't feel bad...I am a little weird..." He put on a smile, "See, I'm not offended...I guess that means I would stand out no matter how big a crowd is...That's a good thing, right?"
They shared a shrug and a laugh. Looking out the window, Sora seen the moon. It was beautiful...
She stood up and stretched, then looked over herself. Of course she would be so careless; she had managed to rearrange her fur a little, making it look all messy. She sighed quietly to herself, and starting trying to make it lie flat against her body, to make it neat again. Well, at least it was good practice; she felt she was getting much better at cleaning herself. she paused and looked around again. She recognized the Pokemon, but realized only then that Sora wasn't there. A nighttime stroll? Or a midnight snack? Well, either way, he wouldn't leave her on her own; not when his Pokemon were here, too. And even if he had lied about helping her, he wouldn't leave his Pokemon behind. No reasonable trainer would.
She carefully made her wayto the edge of the bed and looked for a clear space to jump into. There was one close enough that she knew she could land in. Before she jumped, she looked around. A window...well, maybe it was just a little warm in here, with all the Pokemon. Or maybe it was just that there was more than one fire-type there. Either way, it seemed a little too warm to her. And she had seen a Vulpix jump that far; the only question was could she do it?
She moved closer to the window without leaving the bed, avoiding any Pokemon in her way. She jumped, and nearly missed. Her back paws ended up scraping the dresser underneath the window. She heaved herself up, looking down to where she might have fallen. Fortunately a clear patch of floor, but the sound it woulld have made might have woken up the others. She climbed to the windowsill, struggling to open the window on her own. Paws weren't designed to unlock windows, or to grab a hold of the window tightly enough to open them. "Come on..." she mumbled to herself. If this kept up, she'd just have to wait until Sora got back and ask him to do it for her.
"Try not to get lost 'kay?" He said with a smile. He lay back down on the bed, letting his eyes shut again as he sank into the bed...
Sora woke up with the feeling of the sun coming in through the window. He felt a slight weight on his chest. Looking down he seen a red furry ball lying there. Not wanting to move out of fear of waking her, he continued lying there, thinking about a few things.
The book was one of those things. He pondered what it could look like, or what it would say inside. Another thing that crossed his mind was how cute Songrose looked lying sleeping. On his chest. For some reason he felt himself going a little red, though he couldn't tell why. After all, it was just a Vulpix sleeping on his chest. All of his Pokémon had done that at some point or another, with Cubone being the exception. Except it wasn't "just a Vulpix" was it? It was technically a girl lying sleeping. On him. Attempting to shake the thought from his head, but failing, his brain managed to conjure up an image of her, like she really looked (on her 'Missing' poster) lying against him sleeping. This only served to make him redder. Now he really hoped she didn't wake up...
"Sorry; not sure when I managed to find my way there." Still, it was a good thing the fur covered her face; made it harder for him to see her blushing. Besides, how was this too much of a problem? He had picked her up the day before; she had been there against his chest then. The looked over herself to make sure her fur wasn't too much of a mess. That still wasn't very different; she had always had to make sure her hair wasn't much of a mess. Then she turned her attention back to him, her head tilted to one side again.
"So, after breakfast, I assume we're going to the store to find supplies? That is, if you eat breakfast." Too many people she knew didn't eat in the mornings, which she had always found strange. "Fortunately the store isn't too far away...won't take too long to get there...and it should be open by then, too..."
