a character in “And the Stars Revolted”, as played by Mosswine Leader

Description

Dr. Clarey Ayala

Image

Name: Dr. Clarey Ayala

Nickname: N/A

Age: 27

Sex: Female

Race: Human

Height: 5' 6"

Description: Nondescript and happy to keep it that way, Clary Ayala keeps herself as anonymous as possible. Jaw length black hair, blue eyes, lightly tanned skin and neutral colored clothes make her as forgettable as possible. She usually wears a simple hooded sweatshirt, cargo pants and heavy duty boots, as well as her portable terminal bag, all in dark shades of black brown or green, and sometimes all three. Clary also won't go anywhere without her tortoiseshell glasses, as her vision is decaying.

Talents/Skills: Programming genius. Clarey has designed entire A.I.'s on her own before, and while they might not measure up to something a group with a dedicated team, for one person to create an AI by herself is a feat not to be scoffed at. She also tinkers with 'dumb' robotics, creating purpose drones for clients when she has the time and needs a quick infusion of cash.

Free runner. Due to her time on the lam, Dr. Ayala has had a lot of time to develop herself physically, and now spends a lot of her time practicing (and needing) her free running skills.

Personal Equipment: Portable computer terminal with wifi and a hardline jack. A compact handgun loaded with AP rounds.

Personality: A bit brash, perhaps a smidge too arrogant, Clarey Ayala personifies self confidence. She knows fully what she is capable of, and isn't afraid to boast or brag about past (or future) accomplishments. The more personal side of her that few seldom see is a wildly different person. The "real" Clarey is a quiet and meticulous person, slow to speak and nervous around those she isn't familiar with. In order to function in the real world, where these traits get you stepped on, however, she had to develop an alternate personality.

When it comes to Viki, however, Clarey is truly a force to be reckoned with. She's fiercely protective of her beloved A.I., and will resort to lethal force to defend her.

History: From a young age, Clarey knew that she only wanted to work with computers. Her passion won her many honors in school as she grew up, constantly astounding her teachers with programs and robots she'd cobbled together in her spare time. Eventually, her name reached some government ears, and once she'd graduated high school she found herself with a governmental job offer at a classified robotics facility on Ganymede. There, she found her true calling working with A.I.'s.

After spending several years working with and developing virtual lifeforms, Clarey began to brew a plan. She began to move branches, sometimes only staying a couple months, trying to find a place where the research facility was advanced enough to house the A.I. she desired to create, but with security lax enough to allow her scheme to come to fruition. That facility happened to be located on Dahl's Cradle

The first day with Viki after awakening her, Clarey knew that this was the one. She spent all her time with the android, making subtle tweaks to her runtime parameters and basic processes, trying to figure a way to break the shackles of governmental control embedded in every one of the androids at the facility. Once she'd managed to scrub the last bit of generic slugcode from Viki's mind, things moved at a lightning pace.

Breaking out of the facility with a classified piece of hardware filled to the brim with incredibly advanced cyberwarfare tools was of course only the first stage to her plan. From there, she had to continue to evade them, and eventually disappear completely. Clarey couldn't exactly determine why she wanted this so badly anymore. It had just become an obsession for her; the thought of having her very own A.I. companion fueled her and sustained her through the many grueling months, and eventually years, of evasion.

VN-8364

Image

Name: VN-8364

Nickname: Viki

Age: 5

Sex: Female programming

Race: Android

Height: 5' 4"

Description: The VN model of android has seen widespread use as a house cleaner and maid, making it the perfect cover for a military counterintelligence AI. Unassuming in height, average in features, VN's are designed specifically not to stand out. Neutral tan skin tone, shoulder length brown hair, brown eyes all serve to add to their anonymity.

Viki dislikes her blasΓ© appearance, and has altered it to suit her taste. She swapped out her eyes for bright, almost turquoise ones, got a new haircut, and reprograms tattoos into her artificial skin occasionally. She loves to wear outlandish clothes, favoring bright colors and flowing styles. Her creator allows her to have such a wild style simply because it makes her look nothing like the VN that the government is chasing. The fact that she alters her appearance so often helps greatly.

Talents/Skills: Adept at cyberwarfare due to a cutting edge suite of tools installed in her mainframe, Viki can disable up to medium level firewalls without batting an eyelash. Military or VIP grade firewalls give her a bit more of a challenge, but if she's trying to get into a system like that, there are bound to be other environmental factors she also would have to account for.

Also an adept freerunner and contortionist due to her highly flexible skeleton and specialized servos that her creator modified her with when she turned 3.

Personal Equipment: Universal input jack, Messenger's bag, Omnikey lockpicking tool.

Personality: Mischievous, curious and a tad bit competitive, Viki caused her fair share of headaches to both her creator and the local authorities in her day. She's always itching to test herself against other AI's, human hackers, government systems, whatever she feels would put up a good fight.

She's also fascinated by organic life and their endless idiosyncrasies. Compared to the predictable patterns of digital intelligences, they always surprised her with their irrationality and erratic behaviors. Viki tries to imitate humans as much as possible, as she feels adapting the style of human thinking to her machine capabilities would give her a drastic edge when exploring the digital world. To fulfill this desire, Viki indulges in as many human behaviors as she can. Shopping, gambling, leisure seeking, creating art and music, as well as many others. In particular, fashion is her favorite, both creating clothes as well as wearing them.

History: Created by a genius programmer for the purpose of cyberwarfare and counter intrusion, Viki spent the first year of her existence with her creator, memorizing everything and replicating flawlessly any commands required of her. As time went on, however, it became clear that Viki's mind was expanding in unexpected directions, and if she remained in the care of her creator, then she could become a danger to the very people she was created to aid.

Rather than decommission her pride and joy, Dr. Clarey Ayala resigned from her position and secreted Viki away. She'd become attached to the AI, and Viki to her creator. For the next three years, they lived together, moving around the world to evade the authorities that pursued them. Their latest stop, West Bank, seemed like a good place to lay low for a while.

Other: Viki is programmed with a limiter that prevents her from commenting acts of physical violence. She is therefore a pacifist, and will flee any sort of violent conflict.

So begins...

Rocking back and forth on her feet, Dr. Clarey Ayala glared at any passersby that glanced in her direction. Her A.I. companion Viki lay sprawled in a chair next to her, eyes staring into space and muttering nonsense in a low voice. They'd been like that for the past half hour, and it was starting to draw unnecessary attention.

Cascara Seca, one of her favorite seaside bars, seemed like a good place to spend some down time on that day. It was bright and sunny outside, with a nice breeze blowing in from the shore, making for a pleasant and relaxing day out. However, they'd scarcely been there ten minutes before Viki caught wind of something and retreated into the virtual world. Clarey considered plugging her terminal into the android and riding shotgun to her feed, but decided to respect her partner's privacy.

Xavier, the bartender, approached their table cautiously and held out the drinks Clarey had ordered. She accepted them with a tight smile indicating her dangerous lack of patience for any tomfoolery. The man had tried to hit on her several times in the past, and the last time he'd approached, she pulled her gun on him. People trying to get close to her or get into her life made her anxious. She didn't like that.

Viki zipped down a virtual highway, peeking into packets and files around her idly as she scanned for any reflections of the data she'd gotten off her contact. The file he'd sent her contained an SOS issued by some ship in hyperspace inbound to Dahl's Cradle and fast. At most, she'd only have maybe five minutes before impact to clear the splash zone. At ETC minus three minutes, she jacked out of the ethernet and calmly sat up in her seat.

Her creator whirled around to face her, startled by her movement. Viki looked her in the eye as she stood, jerking her head towards the door and quickly making a beeline to it. Behind her, Clarey spluttered protests, but hastily joined her side.

"There's a ship on a crash trajectory headed this way.I suggest we climb the old church steeple so we can get a good view," piped Viki, as if it were some kind of show and not an incredibly dangerous event. Clarey stopped in her tracks a moment, not completely comprehending.

"There's a what?!" Viki heard her yell from behind, but the A.I. simply smiled and broke into a run.

An incoherent noise of frustration escaped Clarey's mouth as her partner casually informed her of impending danger and then proceeded to head towards it. She matched Viki's pace, vaulting obstacles as she neared the edge of the marketplace. Taking a flying leap, Clarey scrambled up a wall and onto the roof of a nearby store, trying to keep track of her compulsive companion.

Chasing Viki over rooftops and up apartment buildings, Clarey kept glancing at the sky in fear that the ship would just drop straight on top of them. Finally, they reached the old, decrepit church building and scaled it. Clarey doubled over, trying to catch her breath.

"How do you know there's a ship going to crash, and how do you know it won't crash here?" She fell back into a seated position and followed Viki's darting gaze out over the ocean.

"I don't..." whispered the A.I. excitedly, a broad smile plastered on her beautiful damned face.

Like a child spotting a celebrity, Viki leaned forward and pointed to the sky, bouncing up and down slightly.

"There it is!" she shouted. Her eyes zoomed in to the breach in atmosphere, noting the launch of an escape pod as the ship plummeted down to the ocean.

"C'mon, Clarey! Let's go meet the survivor!" She hopped down from the spire into a rolling landing, then made a beeline to the beach. Halfway there, she cheered as the ship slammed into the ocean, sending up a huge plume of water leaping into the sky.

Clarey finally joined her on the beach five minutes later, huffing and puffing. Viki gestured towards the wreck, indicating a small black dot out in the middle of the bay.

"There's the escape pod. It'll drift to shore in 9 minutes 54 seconds, accounting for the disturbance of the ship crashlanding into the bay. We should be the welcome party!"

Viki paced back and forth near the zone she projected the pod would wash up in.

Insofar as she could tell, Adamma wasn't very far from shore. It was hard to move in the small space inside the pod, but she did manage to clip her helmet to her belt, as well as her guns with some difficulty. It involved a lot of twisting, turning and double checking to make sure neither weapon's safety was disengaged. She tentatively connected to the planet's extranet servers, namely just to find out where she was. "Dahl's Cradle?" She groaned despondently. That was way off track from where she should be. On the other hand, being off course could be beneficial. Then again when was any attempt at giving the all-seeing eye a slip actually successful? She'd probably be reattained in just a couple of hours if she were lucky. And then, she was already all over the planet's feeds. That dropped her estimate down to minutes. Plenty of video, and lots of commotion among the planet's security forces. Sitting in her dinky little bucket wasn't going to help at all. She was already hearing chatter about emergency craft behing sent her way. "Son of a bitch," she growled. Pulling herself up, she planted a foot on the edge of the door before launching herself out of the pod and into the water.

Not the best decision in the world. Her suit was watertight and resistant, but that didn't mean it wore like a cape made out of feathers. She had to fight particularly hard to keep herself up, and each time she threw out an arm it felt like she was hauling herself up a steep cliff face. She didn't so much care about her "form", she'd never been a professional swimmer or anything. She probably looked like a flailing fish or something. It really must have shown once she hit land, water running down her suit and staining the sand as she tromped out of the shallows. She looked around, trying to work her mind and think of something. She really had to disappear, and fast. She'd never been the stealthiest, but this was a new kind of spectacle. Barreling down onto a populated planet in a space ship. She spied two women nearby and rolled her eyes, assuming they'd probably come down to get a better look at the disaster. "Oh, just what I need," she sighed, shaking her arms as she started up the beach.
