Jessie sat there on her bed looking at her newest bruise from him. Sniffing, she'd run her fingers through her hair. Looking at the time she'd shake her head and sigh. It was time to go to school. Sliding off her bed, she'd walk into her closet, she had to find something he would approve of. Her navy blue off the shouler fringe shirt followed school rules, but also she thought he would like it. Turning right around and grabbing her white jeans she quickly got dressed and gave herself a once over.

She felt pretty, and she thought she looked pretty. Leaving her closet she slipped on her black pumps and sighed. Grabbing her rose necklace Ben had given her, she placed it around her neck before applying makeup to any bruise she saw, and made her eyes stand out with some dark brown eyeshadow. She smiled getting her things together, she quickly made her way down the stairs, but not before checking the time. She had to be ready or else, he would leave her. Running into the kitchen she grabbed a banana, and put her hair up into a messy bun.

She was running a bit late today, but she was rushing to make it out the door on time. Giving her mother a quick kiss she shouted up the stairs. "Come on Cat! Ben's gonna be here any minute, and if you wanna ride with us you need to hurry up!" She'd sigh as she opened the door her eyes scanning the road for her boyfriend's car.

Grunting as he got off the couch, he rolled over and puked his guts out. "Ugh... shock therapy to my guts..." He'd grumble before staggering to the kitchen. "Kory! Get your ass down here now!" He shouted from the breakfast bar. "If you want to eat you will!" God he felt like shit, probably looked like it too, smeared makeup, wrinkled clothes, smelling like alcohol, and stale cigarettes. A walking bar is what David was. Walking over to the sink he checked the time before shaking his head. That boy... didn't even seem to care about his old man. Shrugging David left the kitchen and banged on his sons door. "You got some vomit to clean boy...if you want to go to school.." David was an impatient man... it was easily seen in his actions. Jiggling the door handle he finds it locked. "Lock yourself away all you want... still have to see me." A laugh as he walked away.

She hadn't gotten much sleep the night before. These days, she was lucky to sleep for an or hour or two if she slept at all. Once she closed her eyes and drifted off the nightmares would begin and she would wake up screaming or crying or just plain terrified. All of her dreams were about the same person, the same man who had ruined her life so completely in one night. The funny part was, no one knew...no one had even guessed at it. They just thought she was going through a phase, a timid, depression filled phase. Even if she had told someone, who would believe that a cop could do such a terrible thing? No one.

There was a shuffling sound at her door and then a knock. "Kaylee, sweetheart? It's time to get up. You've got to go to school," Her mother said in the usual, cheery voice. The teen moaned, rolling over. She could claim she wasn't feeling well again and miss school for one more day, already having missed an entire week pretending to have the flu. It wasn't that she was afraid of going to school - she had gone since the Incident - she was just so tired all the time. Her teacher's had started to question why she was always falling asleep in class, the students had started to notice the growing numbers of scars on her arms.

But she couldn't bring herself to miss another day, she had fallen so far behind in school it was a miracle she wasn't failing yet. "I'll be ready in thirty, mom." She said halfheartedly, swinging her feet over the edge of her mattress. It only took her a few minutes to show and pull on the sweater and jeans she would be wearing for the day, despite the fact that each piece of clothing was chosen for a reason. The sweater didn't show cleavage and were long sleeved, the jeans were not skin tight. She was under the impression, that had she been dressed differently...maybe that night wouldn't have happened. Even though, realistically, she knew it it wasn't her fault, but it didn't stop her from feeling that way. She brushed her teeth, put her hair in a pony tail, and pulled her backpack over her shoulders. That was all it took to get ready for the day now.

Her mom had been waiting for her in the kitchen. "Hey babydoll, you hungry? I made eggs just the way you like them!" The fifty-something woman said with her ever present smile. Kaylee returned a small, fake smile but shook her head. "I'm not really hungry this morning...Sorry mom." She replied, chewing on her bottom lip nervously. Her mother looked a little disappointed but didn't say anything, opting to eat the eggs she had made for her daughter instead.

In ten more minutes they were out the door and on the way to the school, riding in silence. When they finally reached it her mother wished her a good day and drove off. Just like most days. Her parents didn't even sort of realize what was going on with their daughter. Part of Kaylee was disappointed by this, she felt invisible to her parents, like she was screaming and they didn't even hear her. She walked towards her usual spot, where she would sit before class, at lunch, and all the times in between, just waiting for the day to be over.

"Kory! Get your ass down here now!"

As always, Kory was awoken by the hoarse, angry voice of him. He had slept a little bit after he was able to escape to his room before the full assault could be unleashed on him. Kori groaned in anger as another yell came from the kitchen: "If you want to eat you will!" Kori finally opened his eyes to stare at his ceiling, loathing that he had awoken once more. He would lying if he said that ending himself wasn't on his mind, but it posed a few problems. Shay would be seriously pissed off at him if he committed suicide: nobody would be there to help with the music store if he did. The little sparrow hiding in his window would be left for dead as well.

Sighing grudgingly, Kory hauled his ass out of his bed to an upright sitting position, just as the door was banged on. "You got some vomit to clean boy...if you want to go to school.." Kory nearly threw a nasty retort back at him, but said nothing as He jiggled the doorknob. Good thing that Kory invested in a lock, or he would probably have another bruise or something. Lock yourself away all you want... still have to see me. He then walked away, but not before adding a chilling laugh that got Kory every time. That laugh symbolized everything wrong with that thing, that man that called Kory his own.

Kory narrowed his eyes angry, and stood up to stretch while examining the few bruises that remained. There weren't as many as normal, which was quite the depressing thought for anybody that wasn't him. Seeing this as his opportunity, Kory grabbed his clothes for the day - black skinny jeans, his spiked belt and a black band shirt - and made a break for the washroom. Not 5 minutes later, Kory emerged from the washroom fully bathed, hair straightened, dye reapplied, and the little bit of makeup he felt like wearing today. Normally, his makeup appliance was determined by how bad the previous night had gone. The worse it was, the more he put on.

In hand was the carpet cleaner, some paper towels and a rag as he passed David, to which Kory simply knew as Him. Truly, the man looked like absolute shit today, which made Kory smirk slightly about. However, knowing that He was an impatient bastard, Kory headed towards the mess of puke on the floor by the coach, and gave a little bit of a sigh. "At least have a freaking bucket next time." Kory mumbled under his breath. He wasn't sure if He had heard him, but he knew that if he had he would be getting a swift hit somewhere. Then again, that was expected in their house: Kory does something 'wrong', David kicks his ass for it.

Caitlin woke up early that morning, groaning softly. She had snuck into the shower and scrunched her all in thirty minutes before sneaking back into her room. She never really wanted her family to know that she usually got up early just because they often would ask her a lot of questions about if their outfit looked good enough or something like that. For quite a while she was pacing around her room with nothing but a towel wrapped around her as she tried to decide what she was going to wear. "Come on Cat! Ben's gonna be here any minute, and if you wanna ride with us you need to hurry up!" Oh shit, really it was almost time for school already? Damn, this was not good because she wasn't even close to being ready. Now she was panicking, and when she started to panic it wasn't a good thing. She shoved herself into her closet, throwing cute outfits onto her bed in search of something not only school appropriate, but also something that she liked to wear. "I'll be down in a couple of minutes, let me get dressed, and put my makeup quickly!" She called out, sighing angrily. Finally she found what she thought was a good enough outfit which consisted of a light blue summer romper, a white bow that she put in her hair, a pair of white toms, and her makeup done just perfectly to match the outfit. Okay so maybe it wasn't exactly school appropriate, but first off she didn't care and second of all if she needed to she brought a change a clothes and finally if any kid didn't like it then all she can say to them is for them to get over it. Once her clothes were fully on, her makeup was perfect, and her hair was prefect she hurried down the stairs and to her sister's side. "Hi," She said softly, looking her sister over and smiling approvingly. "You look pretty!" She exclaimed then gave her sister a gentle hug. She sighed softly, grabbing her bag which was next to the door and slinging it over her shoulder.

Shailene Esmeralda Scott

So, I put my hands up
They playin' my song
And the butterflies fly away
Noddin' my head like, yeah
Movin' my hips like, yeah
And I put my hands up
They playin' my song
And I know I'm gonna be okay
Yeeaahh, it's a party in the USA
Yeeahh, it's a party in the USA

Shailene danced around her room in a flourish, shaking her hips lightly and bobbing her head to Miley Cyrus' old song. Back in the days when she used to like her. She giggled to herself as she did a nice pirouette. She hopped over to her vanity table and pulled out some jewelry, still grooving to the music. Her Dad was out of town - thank God - and her mom was downstairs making her a smoothie. Finally together, she stood up straight in front of the mirror and struck a slight pose, admiring her outfit. She fluffed her red hair a little, adoring the way it curled. She'd been having a horrible time with it. Smiling and satisfied, she grabbed her bag and phone and was out of her room.

However, all of her happiness was stolen as she realized, disappointed, that her father was seated at the dining room table eating breakfast and her mom was just fixing her smootie. Shailene hurried up and painted a smile on her face as she entered the kitchen.

"Morning, mommy. Daddy." She was very polite this morning as she sat at her usual seat. Her mom, knowing her mood change, gave a sweet kiss to Shailene's cheek. She placed a plate filled with eggs, bacon, and potatoes in front of the teenager with her smoothie on the side. Everyone knew her dad hated when people skipped breakfast. He never did. Though I'm still wondering when he became such a health nut, Shailene thought bitterly before taking a bite of her food. Matter of fact, what he had was worse than what Shailene would've eaten. At least, she would've eaten a frickin' muffin with her smoothie. All he had was some coffee and a Danish.

"I've already secured your internship with the firm," he told her after a few minutes of silence and Shailene's eyes rose to him in panic. But she loved her job at the music store. He held up a hand at the sign of her complaining eyes. "It's already a paid internship and you'll be working with me every day. Just filing papers, but getting paid." Shailene frowned.

"But I like working at the music store, Daddy." His eyes turned dark at her and Shailene shut her mouth quickly.

"When will you get serious? College is just around the corner, Shailene." Thus began his speech about her future and being mature and letting go of childish ways. He wanted her to discern between what were her hobbies and what she was good at. Shailene fought the urge to roll her eyes and found that she had no argument for him, despite the one bubbling up inside of her chest. It was suffocating and she could feel frustrated tears stinging the backs of her eyes. "I want you to handle the music situation soon. You'll be starting the internship next week." Bitterness rankled below the surface of her false smile and Shailene scooted back in her chair.

"I have to go. Gonna be late for school and stuff," she lied quietly. Her dad, for once, did not argue despite the fact that he knew she was lying. Luckily, her smoothie was in a to-go cup. With a knowing glance from her mother, Shailene walked out of the house. Silent tears fell, but she swiped them away before they could run any further down her cheeks. She prayed every day for the strength to say something, to just get everything off her chest. And each time, she found herself more and more disappointed.

No,she decided mentally. She had to smile. She had to be happy. One of them had to be. Korky was never as happy and as cheery as she was. And she'd be damned if she wasn't by the time she saw him. Usually, they'd meet up outside of the school and sit before school started. So, for the walk, Shailene flipped through her phone for the right song, text Kory that she was going to be on her way to the school, and plugged in her earphones.

It's a good thing she had One Direction on her phone. Trashy, she may think they are. Catchy, their songs were.

Sue woke up to the same blaring ring that he had everyday. Not wishing to, he routinely went downstairs and into the kitchen. Throwing burritos in the microwave, he went back upstairs while they were being heated. Maybe his parents were home, but he didn't worry too much about it. He got by on his own just fine... for the most part. Putting on a loose, blue striped shirt and his similarly blue cargo shorts, and just glad that no one was awake to complain that he was wearing shorts and long sleeves again. He didn't care too much about his outfit as a few others did, as he only pushed up his sleeves and slipped on his shoes before being ready. It was still early to start walking, but he did anyway, wishing to get as much time with Kaylee as he could. There was only one thing he did before leaving, and that was making sure his sister was awake. Leaning in her doorway and knocking on the wall. "Hey, don't be late."

Sue was slightly frustrated walking. Not that walking was a torture, it was just an unnecessary burden. "Two more days," he told himself. His parents had taken his keys and grounded him. "Two more days..."

The walk was pretty nice. If he were to recap, it would be "sunrise, fresh air, birds. Some Disneyland shit going on." It was even better once at school, knowing he would see his girl. Seeing her spot was empty, he considered that he left a bit too early. A couple of laps around school, picking up and dropping friends seemed to pass the time. Upon her arrival, he sped to her side. It's hard being stealthy when you're above the crowd, though he still came beside her and nudged her shoulder. "Hey. How're you darlin'?" Kissing her forehead, he asked about her attire. "You warm or something?" Her figure may of been masked, but he knew it well. It wasn't outlined by any clothing, but putting his arm around her, he felt her familiar curves.

At one point in time, Kaylee's boyfriend had been the center of her whole world, but the last couple weeks she had been distant. She didn't mean to, there was just a part of her that felt like she had betrayed him and an entirely different part that was afraid. He had never done anything to hurt her, quite the opposite. Sue had been the best boyfriend a girl in high school could wish for, but that cop had ruined everything for her. Now her boyfriend's touch was enough to make her tense in fear and when he kissed her forehead, she nearly panicked. She took a deep breath, trying hard to keep calm and act like nothing was wrong with her. She wished she could just tell him. Then maybe she'd feel better, maybe she'd feel protected.

"Hey. How're you darlin'? You warm or something?"

"Hey baby," She said, her voice a little shaky. When he commented on her clothing she shrugged. "Yeah. I guess I'm kind of cold." She was completely unable to relax, her hands visibly trembling. She hated herself for being this way but she couldn't control it. The once fun loving, party girl she had been was gone. Now she didn't even recognize her own reflection. Kaylee felt his arm slide around her and she did her best not to react, to just be comfortable like she was before.

"Sorry I haven't really talked to you the last few days. I've been...sick." She had to make some excuse for not inviting him over or going to school for the last week. Usually she would talk to him for hours over the phone or texts and the last few days she had barely said a word. Her whole life was a mess and she had never felt so alone in her life, or so dead inside.

She may of been distancing, but Sue hadn't lost hope and still cherished moments with Kaylee. Hearing her breath, he apologized. "Startle ya? I'm sorry." He didn't mean to make her uncomfortable, only to... "guard" her. The last few weeks... they were rough. He wasn't really alone, more over bored. He could still do things, but most of them he wished he were with her.

Kaylee'd responded, with her hands trembling and voice stressed. He knew she had been acting different, but he didn't want to question it. He was afraid asking might make things worse, and he didn't want to stress her more. "Well, I can always warm you up then." He didn't want to push things, but his drive to help couldn't be oppressed.

"Sorry I haven't really talked to you the last few days. I've been...sick."

"Don't worry much about it dear. Grounded. They took my keys, so we couldn't go anywhere anyways." His voice showed he was bummed out about losing his car. It wasn't just his machine, it was his transportation, and more importantly, how he'd take Kaylee places. "Sorry that you gotta ride with your mom now."

"Your backpack?" Only referring to it, not grabbing it. He hadn't asked directly, but it was known he'd take it for her. "Hey, could we go to the park then? I dunno, anywhere you wanna go." He really wanted to do something with Kaylee. He couldn't drive them anywhere, so the park would work. They could always ask their parents, but he tended to avoid asking his for obvious reasons, and assumed that Kaylee would think the same.
