Cassius

Goddess of Emptiness and Confusion

0 · 440 views · located in A small coffee shop on Earth.

a character in “Apocalypse Over Coffee”, as played by CyraEm

Description

About 5'7", and seventy eight pounds, Cassius is nothing more that bones and skin. Her head seems incredibly large for her frame, and her eyes incredibly huge and wide for her face. Her cheeks are gaunt and her shoulders, elbows and knees are all knobs compared to her thin arms and legs. Her voice is not loud or overbearing, but has a grated edge to it when she speaks. She wears black spandex leggings for pants, running shoes, a lacy red camisole, and occasionally a gray fleece pull-over. What little muscle mass she has is ropey and disfigured. Has a dragonfly sewn onto the left side of her leggings in bright green thread. Intentionally resembles a collarbone, sternum, and ribs. Looks like this: http://missmayhem74055.deviantart.com/a ... -176452541

Has a habit of drawing absentmindedly, mostly scribbles that have been gone over several times in several colors. Has a habit of interrupting people when she knows they're talking about her.

Based on the Roman god/concept Chaos, which gave birth to Gaia.

Personality

Manic and constantly moving, her energy seems to have no source. She's an intense person, but has no real ulterior motive. She wants the destruction of the world; it's her primary driving factor. But she's not interested in violence or tearing down. She wants the light to be snuffed out without a lot of fuss.

Incredibly underhanded, with a wicked sense of humor, she has a short fuse, but tends to internalize any negative emotion. She's constantly contradicting herself, often becoming so confused as to be stymied, because at her essence is a chaos that leaves her indecisive and self-questioning. She can't settle on one thing or in one place, which is part of the reason for her mania, and the reason she feels so at odds with life outside of the void. Every once in a while she enjoys brief moments of clarity, during which most of her planning is done, and she will become manipulative. Other times her energy peaks and she becomes a petulant child.

Her actions are by no means extreme, though. She can hold a conversation, and the change is not readily apparent. To most humans she just seems a bit stupid and lacking focus as she flits from one topic to another.

Equipment

A sketch journal in which she is constantly drawing and scribbling with a marker.

A large glass jar of bright orange, metallic-looking pills that she takes constantly. They're meant for a cleanse for a healthy human, but on her do nothing more than act as a security blanket reassuring her that she is till empty inside.

History

Cassius is one of the oldest gods, but cannot be observed as having the wisdom normally expected with experience. She was there when existence was still a void, a chaotic cloud of matter and energy yet unorganized. When the others came together to shape space and time she fought violently against them. She did not want order. She did not want anything to fill the space. She was restrained by her elders and kept where she couldn't hinder progress, and eventually she capitulated to the desires of her peers. She never gave up trying to suck humanity back into the void, though, and their eventual corruption in the first world was due to her influence amongst the other chaos gods.

When the second world was created and she was imprisoned, she sought her escape through the mind of a young girl on earth named Cassandra. She poisoned a healthy child with her aching hunger for emptiness and vacancy and twisted the girl's thoughts into something resembling her own. And when the girl was a suitable vessel and had wasted away to almost nothing, Cassius fled from her prison into the girl's mind. She stopped feeding the body she inhabited, not even allowing herself to swallow spit. She kept herself empty, creating her own void. She kept the body going, despite giving it nothing to go on, and became the haunting figure she now puts forward. And she began her work anew, exacerbating the cruel and neurotic nature of humans on earth.

When the gods were called together to make the all-important decision, Cassius knew her opportunity lay in hiding her cards. She made her way to the coffee shop, hoping to regain her beloved void.

So begins...

Cassius The door opened and Cassius walked in without a sound. Her eyes prodruted from her face just a touch too much for comfort as she smiled at the inhabitants.

"I must admit, I didn't expect dearest Maisie to react quite like that. I didn't do anything. You all summoned me. No more."

She snapped her gaze from Maisie to Danse, "And what's this about being 'fair', Mors? You're not known for it." She started paced and fidgeting her fingers, looking from person to person as if expecting something.

Cassius stopped, rather surprised, it seemed. "I had nothing to say. Although clearly you want a conversation." She gestured to the empty glass on the table. "You wanted famine, I'm here." Looking at the glass, still containing a touch of milk in the corner and her face fell a touch. She started to pace again and wrestled a bottle from her pocket and dumped a few pills back before stowing it again. She turned on her heel and strode to Quagmire's end of the table, jerking the laptop in her direction. "So what did you want? Need my help building? Should be fun."

Cassius She lifter her hands in the air condescendingly. "So, does this mean I'm officially invited. I've never been a part of planning before." She narrowed her eyes. "The cage that was a bright idea. Although I was never sure which one of you did it."

Cassius looked around the room. "Hostile." she said. It was almost name calling. She slid into a seat next to Danse and began to tap on the table. She looked expectant. "Well?"

Cassius started forward in her chair as if intending to leap across at Maisie. She even extended one hand towards her, but stopped herself when her hips touched the table. She smiled a bit as Maisie flinched and sat back down. Now Cassius was standing, at the head of the room, so she took advantage. "Fantastic, Maisie, really outstanding. It's amazing how much you've grown as a person. Been doing your exercises and affirmations? You're so weak." She sat down, then stood back up again and started walking in ever-narrowing circles behind Danse.

Cassius stopped dead and tilted her head towards Infinitous. She wasn't sure she'd heard him correctly. "Nuetrality?" Her heart leaped into her throat, the arythmic beating something she was used to. "Nothingness..." A faint smile came to her and she softened a fraction. She seemed to come to a decision and sat down with a decisive smack of hip bones against polished wood. "Alright, let's do this. I'll behave if you do."

Cassius blinked. "My grievance is humanity. This place is all wrong. You've shaped the universe into something it was never meant to be. You can carve a tree to look like a dolphin and it'll be all well and good, very pretty, but if you're not careful you'll kill the damn tree!" She flushed a bit making her face ruddy and mottled. "It's and abomination. That's my stance."

Maisie sat in thought for a moment. "Well...I think I'm a bit partial. I'm of humans, and therefore for humans. But it seems to me that despite all of our grandiose power and standing, we lack a lot that humans possess in spades. The world is such a grand place but all we can do is correct and adjust and get involved in the petty inner workings. Humans, in their endless quest to perfect an imperfect world have actually come to embrace it, come to accept that the rules don't make sense and aren't fair. Their imperfect world is fantastic. It's not an error or a botched job. It's organic and flowing and messy, just like it should be. We need them." Throughout her schpiel she had been mostly talking to herself, unable to lift her eyes from where her arms were crossed across her stomach, and as such her voice was low and quiet.

Cassius laughed out loud at the thought. It carried through to a cackle and then a jolting, ragged breath. She turned to Death to see if he found it quite so funny, but found him to be sulking as usual, and somewhat banged up. She smiled at him anyway. "Today may not result in the best decision, but at least we get to see a show! C'mon, you pile of superficial flesh wounds," she gestured at the scars on his arms, what little were visible, "at least be happy about that!"

Cassius nearly started screaming when Maisie spoke to her. All that came out was a gagging noise, as if she were about to vomit. The rage in her system was consuming her every synapse as she struggled to form words. Finally, she spoke, "You insufferable intumescence that dares to claim status among the great ones! You corpse fit for hounds! You came late into a universe you cannot possibly understand, none of you could possibly appreciate!! You are a young and inexperienced child, and you have no sense of what it is like to lose your world and be punished for mourning! Not one person in here knows what I have been through and not one person here can claim more providence than me! You all want to keep this abomination running for your own self-serving reasons but just because you stitched it together out of the pieces of my home that you had left after destroying the rest doesn't mean that you have any right to it, any rule over it! The arrogance, the sheer pompous arrogance..." It was at this point that she started sputtering, and her words lost all comprehension. She was spent vocally, but her posture and movement betrayed the furnace still burning inside.

Cassius was choking on her own words. She couldn't even think anymore. All that came was a welling up of the same pride and loss that had always been there, and it was castrated now, robbed of all power and vitriol by her outburst. She felt spent. Death was wrong about one thing. Maisie wasn't the only one who had become accustomed to her body. How long had Cassius looked down at these same hands? How many times had she seen this ghastly face in a mirror? How long ago had she started considering it her own?

Cassius called out in a shrill, high voice, "They'll never understand Death. I don't know why you try. You're boiling your own blood for nothing at all." She looked back and forth between them, completely overlooking Maisie, "Is this going to turn into the same fight we had the last time we pulled the plug?"

Cassius 's thoughts had cleared. It was like some frequency that had preventing her thoughts from forming had been shut off. She felt acute and in control for the first time since arriving.

Cassius spoke with as kind a tone as she could, but her vocal chords were stressed almost to breaking, "I think you're missing the point. We're not better than them. The humans. They got it from us, we didn't do it to them. They are 'made in our image'." She quoted something she'd heard her host body's mother say, and the thought made the bile rise in her throat. While all mortals bereaved her, she found personal offense with the few she had first met upon her escape.

Cassius sprung from her chair, happy for the movement, and chased after Danse. Her muscles shook from their coiled positions as she ran, and there was the joy of relief mingled in with her concern and anger.

Cassius followed Danse through the door at the back of the room into the dim hallway. "Danse, are you alright?" She was surprised at the amount of earnestness in her lying sympathy, but dropped any change in expression that had cropped up almost immediately. She reached out and grabbed his shoulder. It was bony, like hers, and she wondered briefly what the host had gone through.

Cassius moved forward and wrapped Death up in her arms. The hug was cold and hard and without feeling, but she hoped that in his human revelry he'd take the attempt at comfort as a reason to trust her. Her head, however, remained as far from him as it could and her tone stayed at polite-secretary levels. "There, there. You know, it doesn't matter if they 'get it'. We're going to win," she released him and stepped back five or so steps, "They aren't our equals. They don't know. We have more right than them."

She could feel the facade slipping. "We have to win. I can't make it through another universe. Another time..." Her face had fallen and her head was turned to that she was staring sideways at the floor.

Cassius paused. "I... I just... I'm tired. Tired of pretending that this is working for me. I know I'm the only damn one who cares, but it's not something I can adapt to. I mean, what is a god of emptiness to do in a full world?!" Her eyes looked pleading, although it was unclear with whom she was pleading as she was still directing her gaze at the adjacent wall.

Cassius found her voice and brought her head back to attention, although she still wouldn't meet Death's eye. She instead looked over his shoulder like a blind woman. "We should rejoin the others before they finished constructing another cage." She turned on her heel but paused briefly before the door to make sure Death was behind her. Then she rushed out the door and strode over to Justice and Nyama with a menacing smile. Her mind was starting to buzz again and the clarity was waning. She opened her arms wide like a long lost lover, "Well, dearest siblings, haven't I missed you!"
