a character in “Arcadia”, as played by VitaminHeart

Description

Full Name: Sable Greyback

Nicknames/Aliases: The Black Cat,

Age: 23

Gender: Female

Species: Greater Manticore

Species Description: Manticores are a large, predatory species that are native to the deserts far east of Arcadia.
Prior to the Magical Revolution, the majority of the species were a primitive, nomadic species who survived as ambush predators, luring humans away into the desert and tearing them to pieces. After the Revolution however, no longer confined to the most remote and arid areas by human expansion, the Manticore species began to settle and put down roots.
It was discovered that they were highly intelligent, sophisticated creatures, quite capable of any intellectual task the humanoid races could accomplish, and gradually they began to appear in amongst general society. It’s still fairly uncommon to see a manticore away from their homeland, but it does happen.

Manticores resemble big cats, their build comparable to a lion or a tiger, but they tend to vary more in size, build and colour than conventional big cats of one species. Some have features closer resembling cheetahs or leopards, it often varies depending on region and family background. Male have large manes, like those of a lion, that grown in adolescence. Females may have extra fur in that area, but not a full mane like the males.

A manticore’s features are more flexible and expressive than those of a conventional cat. Their mouths are able to form complex words and their vocal chords are similarly adapted, allowing them to speak. Manticores are gifted mimics, and will often adopt a voice that they like at an early age. It’s perfectly common to see family members that speak with different pitches and accents.
Their front limbs are long in comparison to a normal cat, and possess longer, more flexible digits on the paw, allowing a manticore to hold things or gesture. It is possible for one of the species to stand on their hind legs to free their ‘hands’ but this is uncomfortable and can’t be maintained for very long. One all-fours they tends to be extremely fast and agile.
The manticore had three sets of teeth, arranged one behind the other. This, combined with the strength of their jaw, allows them to hold onto prey in an almost unbreakable grip. Teeth that are knocked out of become loose re-grown within a week or so.

One of the most prominent features of the species is their venom, which is present in their spines. Manticores have long, slender spines like those of a porcupine. A few are scattered on their backs, though most are present in the fur on their tail. These quills are filled with a very potent venom, and are very loosely connected, with tiny barbs that bean they easily come away and stick inside attackers. Pressure can be built up beneath them to fire them like darts.

The venom has a powerful paralyzing effect that can easily bring down all but the largest creatures quite quickly. Without any sort of treatment, such poison will spread more slowly to the creature's heart, destroying it, though antidotes are available.

Occupation: Lanterners Lieutenant

Faction Affiliation The Lanterners

Description: Sable, as first glance, resembles a large cat, most closely resembling a black jaguar, having some evidence of spots in the pattern of her fur, something she supposedly inherited from her mother. Sable is a black variant, a genetic mutation that occasionally occurs as in ordinary cat species.

A sparse number of thin, reddish quills protrude out in and irregular pattern along her spine, generally remaining flat against her fur unless she's angered. A larger number are concealed within the thick fur on her tail.

Sable has large, wide-set paws, though the digits on her front are longer, allowing her to use them as 'hands' of a sort. All her paws have very sharp, thick claws.

Sable's face is furred and quite feline, though considerably more expressive and articulate than that of an animal, possessing human-llike eyes that are coloured a dark red hue. Her mouth stretches almost from ear to ear, showing off her several sets of teeth in a terrifying grin when she sees fit.

Sable has a collar and several belts fastened around her form in order to carry things, though sees little need for the clothes humanoids wear.

Personality:

Sable, despite her appearance, is a highly intelligent and dedicated law enforcer. She is extremely committed to her job and pursues perpetrators with a dogged determination that makes her well-known, and feared amongst the criminal population of Arcadia.

Having grown up in the Goblin Market and Old Quarter, Sable easily engages with the poorer inhabitants of the city, though her manner of speaking to others could use some work. She tends

Skills:

-Beastly Strength: As a beast-type creature, Sable is extremely fast and strong, able to put her size to good use. She can physically overpower most human-sized creatures without much trouble, unless their strength happens to be enhanced. She is also a very fast and agile runner, able to chase down targets very skilfully.

- Deadly Venom: Like other manticores, Sable possesses an extremely potent venom contained in her quills. She is not afraid to use it to her own advantage.

- Gifted Mimic: Sable, like the rest of her species, is a gifted mimic. She can imitate any voice that she hears with great ease.

Weaknesses:

-Sinister Dexter: While a manticore's paws are more dexterous than that of an average quadruped, Sable isn't able to do anything that requires delicacy. She cannot write with a pen or turn pages in a book, finds eating with cutlery frustrating, and often struggles to use keys and locks. She dictates her reports to a scribe to write down incident reports and similar items.

Sable Greyback thankfully listened without showing any distate for Krel's apparent bad smell. She had a scribe write down his words for as a manticore she lacked the dextereity. It was a good thing that mostly reliable people worked at the Lanterners. Not everyone would be humble enough to admit their shortcomings and hire a scribe to write down things for them. But then again, the ability to accept one's weaknesses had to be a Lanterner job requirement.

"The humans who attacked me were called Torredin, who was the ringleader, Nente, Wavven, Poltas, and I don't remember the others. It happened too fast for me to pay attention to every detail," Krel said. He also told her the section of the sewer the incident happened in before he left. Not that he expected her to know offhand (or paw?) but it might help with an investigation.

He made his way to his home in the Old Quarter and pumped up some water. Although he couldn't smell anything himself, the least he could do for his neighbors was to wash off the sewer stink. Especially since the Festival of Unity was coming up. Nobody would want to unite with a smelly gargoyle, he was sure.

When he was finished with that he grabbed some slightly stale bread from his small pantry and some malachite stones from his collection. He ate the hard bread first, setting his sharp teeth to tearing up the toughness of the dough. It wasn't much of a problem for him. Gargoyles ate rocks, after all. After he ate the bread he popped the stones into his mouth one by one, crunching the first ones up and sucking on the last one to lengthen its dry, sweet-sour flavor.

Verran took out her pet project. She was trying to make a form of entertainment for the Festival of Unity. It consisted of pierced magnetic stones on threads, aligned so they floated away from each other. They were fashioned to look somewhat humanoid, with a center stone from which four limbs and a "neck" stood out.

Although Verran could not manipulate magic into a spell, she could coax magic to take a different form. That was what she planned to do with the spell stones she had. She didn't know the previous purpose of the magic-containing gems in front of her, but knowing that it was manhandled magic was enough for her. It meant she could work with it.

With a special tool she carved a slot in each of the three magnet things for one of the stones. Fitting the gems into their slots, she gently reshaped the magic until it satisfied her.

With luck, she had just created her first golems.
