He considers himself a freelancer who'll take jobs from either side. However, he's currently employed by the king.
He's tall and lanky, just reaching six feet two. Evert has lightly tanned skin, slightly unkempt blond hair, and brown eyes. He generally wears sturdy clothes: a white shirt, a vest, and pants with plenty of pockets. He never goes anywhere without his nearly indestructible leather bag, which carries his books, pens, paint, and everything else he needs for his profession. Evert also wears incredibly thick and bulky gloves, to protect his hands. His hands are his livelihood, after all. He has a small scar just under his left eye.

Born in a moderate-sized town in northern Sylvesta, Evert had a fairly peaceful childhood. His two older brothers was very protective and loving, and his parents were caring, if slightly distant. When he was about ten, his talent for art was discovered. His parents decided to send him to the capital to be apprenticed to a famous mapmaker who agreed to take him in. On his way to the capital, the boat he was traveling on was attacked by pirates and barely managed to escape. Immediately, Evert decided that he hated action and adventure. Finally, he arrived at the city, where he studied for several years under Irida Rau the Mapmaker. The woman was an old, cranky, but exceptionally skilled artist and mapmaker.
When he turned sixteen, Irida decided that he was old enough to go travel the lands. Mapmakers had to actually see the places they were drawing. So, Irida threw him on a ship and told Evert not to come back until he had traveled around. She expected a detailed map as proof. Reluctantly, Evert traveled the southern islands. He discovered that he actually liked traveling. However, he did still not like the danger and adventure that came with it. And unfortunately, Evert was very unlucky in that regard. He always found himself in the most troublesome situations.
Evert, after nearly dying several times (and discovering a talent for force-based magic), returned to the city with a beautiful map. Irida was more than satisfied. He continued working hard under Irida, while also keeping detailed accounts of the places he traveled to. When Evert was twenty-one, Irida passed away peacefully in her sleep. He took over the business, selling maps and information. He soon made a name for himself as the Artisan Mapmaker. His fame also brought some drawbacks. The king had taken notice of his skills, and he commissioned Evert to make a map of the Crescent Belt Isles and the legendary Root of the World. With no choice but to comply, Evert unwillingly set off on his journey...
His photographic memory allows him to remember everything. Evert can draw anything or anyone that he's seen before, with great detail and accuracy. He's also very good with languages, as his memory allows him to remember words very easily. He can also haggle very well, allowing him to buy things for very cheap.
He carries a staff and a dagger, but he's not formally trained in either. He's better with the staff; it doesn't take much skill to hit people with a stick. The dagger, on the other hand... well, Evert knows that he's supposed to use the pointy end, but he doesn't really know much beyond that. When it comes to magic, though, he's very skilled. Evert is adept at telekinesis, using magic to throw objects (and people) around, creating distractions. Evert can also create illusions, which are also effective distractions. His main goal in a battle is to run away; he's rather fast, allowing him to run away from danger very quickly.
