Full Name:
Starling James Rhydderch

Jay, Rhy or Rider, occasionally. More often he'll just use his first or last given name. He is, however, referred to as 'Skate King' in tags, or, a bit less frequently, 'Graveyard Crew's Skate King'.
Age:
18
Gender:
Male
Sexuality:
Closeted Homosexual
Profession
Skate King {Informal}, Sound Techie {At Their Local Skate Hang Out; where he gets most of his actual money}, Librarian {When money's tight he picks up shifts at the library across the street from his skatepark}, Musician {When he can get Gigs}, seeking professional skating backing.

Hair Colour:
Black.
Eye Colour:
Hazel
Height & Weight:
5'7", 127 lb
Distinctive Markings:
Scars:
Having been skating for the majority of his life, Starling naturally has some scars. Both knees and both elbows are covered in scrape scars, and his palms and wrists are similarly treated. He has a scar on the back of his neck from a minor surgery that had to be done in his teens, and scars across his calves, hips, and any other bony protruding part of him, of which there are many.
Birthmarks:
Local legend says that the dark spot on Starling's left cheekbone is a gang initiation tattoo; it's not; it's a beauty mark, as embarrassing as that is for a man of Starling's nature. He also has a few dark spots on his left outer thumb.
Tattoos:
The first, important tattoo is the one on Starling's neck on the left side; and a matching one on the right hand. [X] On his right arm, there's a skull design on his bicep and a variety of smaller designs on his forearm, as well as some larger, more intricate black and white work and a spiderweb across his elbow. His left bicep is adorned with flower outlines and designs. [X]. He has a collection of further tattoos, as well. [Reference Face Claim for tattoos.]

Clothing Style:
Starling dresses like you would expect of a skate king in Manhattan. He's the east side's leading man in terms of skate fashion, at least, that's what his crew say. Often seen without a shirt, Starling is found most often in skateparks in only shorts or ripped jeans and whatever skate shoes he tossed on that day. He generally wears whatever he can afford that looks half decent on him, and pockets are a must for him. He's almost never seen without a cigarette, and absolutely never seen without at least one skateboard.

Personality:
A born rebel, Starling will generally do things simply because they're against the rules. Starling is fiercely loyal to his friends, and to skate culture in general. He retains control over the 'turf' of many a skatepark in Manhattan, and has a loyal gang of skaters on his side. He finds interest in most alternative culture indulgences; tattoo art, punk music, and tagging and street art. Still, unexpectedly, Starling is rather not intimidating most of the time. He seems laid back, almost a little shy, and somewhat quiet. Not like the type of guy who could knock you down with a single punch. He closes off any suffering he goes through for the most part, and is good at modulating emotional expression. It's hard to tell what he's thinking or feeling at any one moment.

Starling spends most of his free time at the skatepark or in his tiny apartment (or the coffee shop beneath it if someone who allows boards inside the shop is on shift), and with his gang, Graveyard Crew, tagging walls and putting up vast street art. He also frequents the library just across the street from the skatepark which marks the middle of Graveyard Crew 'turf', and, surprisingly enough, is endlessly curious and has a voracious appetite for literature and trivia.

Likes:
|x| Skateboarding and everything associated with it |x| Rebellion, parties, and free-spirited endeavors which make him feel alive. |x| Reading & books |x| Music, especially punk music |x| His crew |x| Tattoos |x| Tagging |x|

Dislikes:
|x| Authority figures |x| Unnecessary violence at the park |x| Tag wars |x| Spiders |x| Crossing the street in crosswalks |x| Schoolwork |x| Talking about his family or future plans or past or anything except his present really |x|

Fears:
|x| Spiders
|x| Fatal Injury
|x| Guns
|x| Being outed

Strengths:
|x| Good at modulating emotion and faking confidence
|x| Amazingly quick learner and eclectically knowledgeable
|x| Great on a skateboard and better with leading a skate gang.

History:
Starling was born in Brooklyn, New York, but raised until he was five years old in Belleville, New Jersey. He spent his youth, oddly enough, learning to sew, paint, draw, and make music with his artistic and pacifistic single mother, Loraine Rhydderch. It wasn't until he was five that he was relocated back to Brooklyn to live with his father and new stepmother, when Loraine decided to take a travelling tour of the country. Starling spent a year of his youth getting used to his new placement, and picking up a skateboard for the first time, and then his father and stepmother relocated him again, to his father's sisters house in Manhattan, where he spent four years being raised under his six elder cousins in a four room apartment. He spent most of his time outside and alone, tracking down skateparks and friends.
He met the beginning skeleton of Graveyard Crew in these years; two of his best friends and a third, who would later leave the crew for a rival after a particularly vicious tagging war and some scandal over who's girlfriend was whose which Starling didn't get into (but that's a much later story for an entirely different day). He learned independence most in this stage of life. After that, he moved back in with his father and a completely different stepmother, only a few blocks away, and spent a great deal of time with his elder step brother, Casimir Graves, who taught him to sing and play guitar again, and who got him into punk music. Casimir became a constant in Starling's life; he was enchanted with the older boy who could do kick flips like they were nothing and who knew every single band ever.
Starling lived with them from the ages of twelve to seventeen, and it was nearing his seventeenth birthday when Casimir died. Cass had been struggling with alcoholism, depression, and being a closeted teenager in a home full of bigots for as long as he could remember, but Starling wouldn't be told of the reasoning behind his stepbrother's suicide until many months later, when he fleetingly found contact again with his mother, and she informed him she'd been told he killed himself because of those things. It scared Starling beyond repair. By that time, he'd left home at seventeen to crash on a friend's couch and stay at their apartment until he was eighteen and could find his own. He barely managed to scrape by in senior year. He's only recently started to find some stability in his own apartment and leading Graveyard Crew, which he's been amassing for years now.

Now: Now? Well, now Starling is living alone, in a small apartment just above a coffee shop, and juggling time between doing sound tech for shows at the skatepark in the middle of his turf (as well as other locations that friends own), participating in skate competitions and other skate king duties, playing local librarian across from said skatepark, tagging walls and subway cars with his crewmates, and spending time practicing his music in the hopes he someday gets a gig.

Family: He has a mother, Loraine Rhydderch, a father, Merlin Smith, an ex-step mother, Cassie Smith-Johnson, and a current step mother, Delilah Smith-Graves, all of whom Starling is estranged from, as well as an elder deceased stepbrother, Casimir Graves. He considers, more than anything, his crew his family.

Secrets: The whole "gay thing" is probably Starlling's biggest secret.

Reason: He's at the library because he's just getting off a shift change wherein he worked there, and he's waiting for his crewmates to text him back, but the two closest which he's waiting on never do. As his absent friends make him more and more worried, he feels a little better just sitting in the library trying to calm down about their wellbeings.

Face Claim: Ash Stymest

{Here's the first official post of 'Are You Ready?'! Have fun!

ON A SIDE NOTE: Just because your and another writer's character's number was the same, does not mean that they have to get with that character. For example, Boy 1 and Girl 1 do not HAVE to end up together. Heck, we could even date twice if we really wanted. What happens, happens! }

It's 2 o'clock on a chilly, Fall afternoon in New York City. It's bustling about as it is daily, as if the people who lived in the streets of NY didn't even notice the change of seasons. It's pratically the season of newfound love, and you can see couples hand in hand crowding the sidewalks.

Sammie enjoyed the nice tone of the big city, seeing the different shades of browns, oranges, yellows, and even reds on the few trees scattered throughout the city, and the parks. But there was something else she noticed too.

All the new couples that seemed to appear overnight.

She doesn't remember there ever being this many, but she was starting to feel jealous of all the girls cuddling up to their significant other by the fire place sipping hot chocolate, and... she shook her head, she needed to get those thoughts out of her head. She was perfectly okay with not being in a relationship, at least for now.

Besides, she was already running late, to her job at a small cafe just a few miles from her own apartment. Arriving at the cafe at about 2:30, she smiled at the light shining in through the giant windows. It was always nice to the sun, it warmed her skin in that chilly place.

She slipped behind the counter, not really taking notice of how crowded it was today. She saw some of her fellow baristas going at it, and she grabbed her tray, notepad, and threw on her khaki colored apron, and straightened her silver name tag that read 'Sammie'.

Sammie then came out from behind the counter, and went towards a table where there where a group of people sitting and chatting. "Hey guys, did you need anything?"

AJ sat at his desk, thinking, about were to go to lunch. Being the IT systems tech for TIME had its benefits. He sat up and went through the list of local places in his little peace of NYC. "No, no, no....Hmmm" he had scrolled down the web page to find an ad for a small little café down the street. He decided it was time to go and enjoy his 2 hour lunch he had yet to take. He shut his laptop off for now, closed it, sliding I in to his computer bag. He pulled his green hoodie on and reached for his desk drawer and stopping as he looked at what was inside. His gun, a smith and Weston .357 snub nose, it was his item of power, his heat sink. He puled the holster on so it was hidden under his hoodie on his right hip. He also slid his security badge on to his lanyard that also had his employee badge as well as his network IT card. He began the roughly 5 minute walk down his particular part of the floor and ended up at the elevator.

Another 2 minutes and 40 floors later, he was exiting the building via the employee only exit/entrance and heading out along the short walk along the street, sliding his ear pieces on and flipping to his droids music files unto it hit his preferred tracks and Spectrum of the sky began playing. The song was what summarized the things around him, it put it all into perspective and allowed him to evaluate the people he saw as he walked. He saw traces of happiness, sadness, even a few guilt filled faces, as he walked passed. He arrived at the little coffee shop and slipped through the small door...

...Only to find the pace full of people....and not just people, couples. He sighed at the small stab of pain that went to his heart and sat down at a small table that was located next to a Wi-Fi modem. He opened up his bag and turned his laptop on. He logged in to his work account and began working on the data needed the next hotfix to the TIME servers, when a waitress approached him. He looked up to find a rather attractive looking girl around his age and a small smile formed on his face.

Annika had been distracted by a mug of coffee when one of her co-workers gave her a nudge and pointed her towards a man who had just taken a seat alone at a table. She set the mug down, donned her best smile, and waltzed to the table, taking out her little writing pad. She was in a decent mood today, so her walk and grin doesn't look quite so mechanical as it usually does. She strolls over easily, tossing her head slightly to rearrange her hair.

"Afternoon, sir, can I get you anything?"
Her flat London accent sounds vaguely jarring against all the other voices present. Still, she wasn't faking the chirpiness today. She tilts her head slightly, waiting for the man's answer.

Annika glances up as someone else comes in, accompanied by the scent of cigarette smoke. She bites her lip, standing up straighter. She never liked telling people to get rid of their cigarettes, but it had to be done.
"I'm sorry, sir, but you're not allowed to smoke in here."

She gives the man a smile, although she's slightly apprehensive. She's always faintly terrified of someone getting aggressive, and it shows. Her hand trembles ever so slightly and she closes her hand more tightly around the coffee she was carrying. She holds her stance, flicking a strand of hair behind her ear.

AJ looked up when he felt the waitress tap his shoulder and gingerly took the coffee from her. the reason for his caution was that the waitress was shaking, not much, but enough that he could tell she was scared of something. He spoke "Hey, you all right??" he looked around spying a rather strange looking guy at the entrance.

"Hmm?"
She looks round, her eyes wide. People don't usually ask her things like that. She brings a smile back to her face. It's a skill she's slowly refined, and her tense features almost instantly smooth out into her best smile. But it's still not entirely convincing.

"Yeah, thanks. Is there anything else I can get you?"
She clasps her still-trembling hands, trying to look professional. Her voice shakes ever so slightly, as his concern has really thrown her.

Her eyebrows shoot up. It's the biggest tip she's ever been offered.
"Wow--"
She grins broadly, and it's genuine this time.
"Wow. Thanks. Really."

She smiles sweetly at him, and it reaches her eyes.
"Make sure you come back here tomorrow and tip me like that again, yeah?"
She's only joking, but in all honesty she could do with more people like him. With a last smile, and another nervous glance at the smoking man, she goes to serve somebody else. She's still glowing.

Sammie's face turned into a frown as the other waitress that worked there stole her table. Mentally cursing, she walked to the front where an alright looking guy stood with a cigarette. "Don't listen to her. She's new, and following all the rules. Our manager smokes, so, you should be alright." Sammie then winked, and her grip tightened on her tray she had in front of her.

"Do you need help with a table? There might be one over there." She pointed to a wall, where there was exactly one table left. "I'll be right there to take your order, unless you already know? But, I don't think you're a regular here. " She turned a faint pink at how much she was talking. "I'm so sorry. Excuse me." She stepped back, and ran a hand through her curly hair.

"I need to calm down. She's got to be a new waitress... I've never seen her here before." She mentally sighed, and then went behind the counter to her purse, slipping a pack of cigarettes under her apron, and in her jeans pocket, hidden. "I really need a smoke break.." She sighed.

Olivia ran her fingers slowly through her damp hair as she looked in the long black door mirror. She put on some black liquid eyeliner and ruby red lipstick on. She tied her hair into a ponytail sigh a dark blue lace scrunchy and ignored the loose strains of hair that escaped. After she pulled on a dark blue lace long sleeve shirt. She wore a dark blue bra with lace trim with a small bow in between the cups. Next she slid on faded gray ripped skinny jeans and knee length black boots with a small one-inch heal.

She looked in the mirror once more before she slid on her black leather jacket. She clipped a chain to a belt loop on right side of her jeans. The sliver chain connected to her black wallet. She slid her wallet into her back right pocket. After she placed her lipstick and chapstick in her front left jacket pocket. She put her keys and pepper spray in her right jacket pocket. She zipped her jack up. After she grabbed her red knitted infinity scarf and placed it over her head. She turned it in half to pull it over her head again.

As she left her small new apparent she put both locks on the door. Olivia quickly headed down the stairs as she thought about her plans for the day. She started her new job starting on the upcoming Monday. She got a job as office assistance in a fashion company. Her friend had moved to New York a few years ago and got a job at the company. He was able to get her a job there too as his boss’s assistance.

Olivia was glad for the job, but she felt nervous about her first day. She walked a few miles before she came upon a coffee shop. Olivia debated with herself if she should go in or not, but then she saw one of the waitresses. She had seen the girl a few days ago when she was going to her apartment. The only thing she knew about the girl was her name was Sammie. She only knew that because of the name tag the girl wore.

‘I think I will go in, maybe I will even be able to talk to her. I haven’t had breakfast yet anyways,’ she mused. She took in a slow deep breath before she opened the door and entered. She looked around, but all of the tables were full. A soft sigh escaped her and she turned to leave, but then someone had gotten up and left their table. She went to stand near the table to claim it. Though she did not want to sit yet as money was still on the table and it was a bit dirty. She glanced around as she took in her surroundings carefully.

Olivia tensed in surprise, but smiled in pleasure also when Sammie came to the table she claimed. She stayed quiet when Sammie spoke at first and simply nodded in reply. Her eyes looked Sammie over as she leaned over the table and wiped it down. Though she quickly looked away when she noticed Sammie was also done wiping.

As Sammie spoke again Olivia found Sammie's gaze once more. She smiled at the female warmly. Olivia just nodded again in response. She still couldn’t find it in herself to speak. She was still surprised at her luck. Olivia watched Sammie walk off only for a second before she sat down at the table. She couldn't believe Sammie would be serving her; maybe today would be a good day for her.

When Sammie returned she slowly looked up at her from under her lashes. “Hello Sammie. I am new here so I am not sure what to get besides coffee. Though, I was wondering, do you guys sell any type of tea or muffins, maybe corn muffins? If not I will just have some plain coffee and something to eat maybe if you have it,” she stated softly. She knew it was a coffee shop, but she decided to ask anyways to try her luck. Olivia took in a very slow and deep breath to keep herself from blushing. She felt a bit fluster talking to Sammie.

‘Hopefully I am not being a pain by asking her any of this. I wonder if she likes girls. I wish I could just ask, but that would be awkward, even for me and it would be very random. Though it does not matter as I think I will come here again to see her. I could try to flirt with her and just see how she reacts...Why can't I just tell what gender she likes magically?' she mused as she gazed off into the distance. A soft sigh escaped her lips unknowingly as she thought about all of this.

Olivia listened as Sammie spoke and then left to check on the muffins. She smiled at herself in thought. Olivia liked when Sammie called her pet names like hun and dear. Though, she could be calling her hun and dear to just be nice or out of habit. She didn’t like that thought so she pushed it away quickly. She didn’t even notice Sammie was distracted. Olivia looked up again when Sammie came back. She looked at the muffin and then at Sammie again when she spoke. She smiled at her when she asked her if she want anything to drink.

“I’ll have tea with honey if you guys serve that here, but if not I will just have coffee with cream please. Also to answer your earlier questions, my name is Olivia Lillian Nightingale. You can call me Olivia or Lillian, but I have the nickname Lilly too so you can call me that if you like, but if you have another nickname you want to call me then you may,” she paused as she realized she was blabbing; she thought of the other question she had asked before she went to get the muffin, “Also I do not happen to be allergic to anything, but thank you for asking Sammie.”

She watched her bite her lower lip for a few seconds. It was distracting and enticing. ‘Let me not be a creep and stare now,’ she scolded herself mentally. Olivia eyes went to the muffin again and she slowly pulled the wrapper off of the muffin. She kept her expression blank as she noticed writing on the napkin. Olivia’s heart raced in hope, but she kept herself from moving the muffin to see if what she hoped was on the napkin. ‘Is that handwriting or is it just part of the napkin’s design?,’ she thought frantically. She decided she would look at the napkin once Sammie left to get her drink.

AJ, being the hawk eyed programmer he was, was slowly looking around the room. He saw the waitress interact with another girl. That wasn't what caught his eye, no, it was when the girl picked up the napkin and blushed that caught his eye. He sat back into his chair, the new information uploading to the TIME servers, and began to wonder what he should do for the rest of the hour and 45 minuets he had left. Fuck it, he thought, I have already gotten my stuff for today done, might as well take the day off.

He brought up the small IM app on his laptop and messaged Beth, his boss, Hey so, I already have the new hot fix uploaded, and I have nothing else to do for he day, so im going to take the rest of the day off, call me if you need anything. AJ

He bent down in to his bag and searched for his supplies. Bingo, he thought, when he found his spray paint can. He got up, left the cash he owed on the table, some $5 even or so, and headed out in to NYC, pulling his hoodies hood over his head. I wonder if any one has claim to the grave yard.. Well, he knew were he was going next.

Sammie sighed as the girl moved to the side. "God, Sorry." Sammie shrugged. "It's alright." She grabbed the honey, and quickly made Olivia's tea, and glanced up, to see her enjoying the muffin. Sammie cracked a small smile, and let out a sigh of relief.

With the honey tea, Sammie set it down carefully in front of Olivia, smiling as she did. "Here ya go, hun. I hope you enjoy. Did you need anything else? Napkins? " Sammie tilted her head, and then turned as she heard the door open, seeing the man from earlier leave.

"I wonder what tip she got.." Sammie mentally wondered, as she awaited Olivia's response. God, she just got more beautiful every time she looked at her..
