"You gotta stay upbeat, upbeat, upbeat. Or you'll be dead meat, dead meat, dead meat."

a character in “As an apprentice...”, as played by ArgoYamato

Description

Image[/url]
"Did you see THAT thunder?!"
(This invoked the response was 'No! Cuz' you can't SEE thunder!')

Name: Sigmund Michael
Nicknames: Sigil (AKA: ‘The Lost Seraph’—developed from his rescue of 4 children in a nearby forest, as well as a play on the fact that he seems to have no idea what he’s doing)
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Type: Alteration and Destruction Hybrid
Spells: Currently he only knows two tangible spells.
  • Angel's Blessing: A self developed alteration spell which allows Sigil to form wings of energy on his back. These wings ARE flight capable but only last three minutes as of right now.
  • Solaris: Another self developed spell--this one, however, is an alteration-destruction hybrid. He can convert light energy from the sun into tangible pure energy. He isn't too good at controlling this yet... So far, he is able to shoot small balls of light as well as turn his own weapon into a near-laser blade.

Homeland: Araluen. Born and raised there.

Description: His hair is unkempt and a shade of brown often described as the color of warm chocolate. Sigil has bright blue eyes and looks younger than his age—15—and his usual mannerisms don’t help him seem his age. His features are soft and occasionally noted to be feminine. He is 5”5’, weighs 110 lbs., and is has a thin appearance.

Image
Equipment:
As a mage, Sigil's spells aren't powerful in the offensive sense. He makes up for this by wielding a Guan Dao--a halberd-like weapon. This weapon is also often manipulated through alteration magic to be made more portable, casually it takes the form of a golden wristband.

In regards to protection, Sigil’s battle style revolves around swift movements and, thus, he only wears light armors—a chest plate and forearm armor just thick enough to deflect scraping blows, and thin metal shin guards to prevent attacks at the legs.

Clothing: The boy is, nearly always, seen dressed in white, black, and blue. He typically wears a white, silk scarf--a gift from his friend--which is often left dangling over his left shoulder. Sigil also usually wears a white vest over his clothes which typically include a black shirt and slightly baggy, dark blue pants. (Note: Unlike depicted in the image below, Sigil does NOT have usually have wings...)

Personality: Sigil has two edges. The personality that is most often seen can be described in a single world: upbeat. He is an optimistic, happy-go-lucky, light hearted, and, at times, jumpy kid who is simply enjoying the world of Aincrad and every aspect of it. He often makes attempts at being awesome, with outrageous stunts, and comedic, with jokes, puns (much to the dismay of others around him), and the occasional sarcasm—ironically, he often misses the sarcasm aimed at him. Sigil is very outgoing and talks a lot—often too much for his own good. He loves combat—of all types. He is unable to understand the idea of one person killing another and cannot perform the task himself. He truly doesn’t mind how he travels, with a group or solo, and enjoys it either way. The boy fights with and for his friends—he would do anything to keep them from dying.

The other side of Sigil, which only shows up in the direst of situations, is significantly more serious. He is much more realistic, though not exactly pessimistic. He is also calmer and takes only minimal actions unlike his casual self. In concerns with killing, he is willing to do so, though, only if necessary. This Sigil would rather fight as a soloist than fight in a team—benefits be darned—though, he is still driven to protect those around him (he would never admit it, but he enjoys the presence of others).

Likes: (Happy Sigil): Fighting, Food (any food with some exceptions), Talking, Friends, Children, Penguins
Dislikes: (Happy Sigil): Idleness, Squashes and Radishes and Eggplants and Fried Shrimp, Cowards, Pessimists, Schemers, Killing and Death, Animals that slither
Likes: (Serious Sigil): Fighting, Swiftness, Strength
Dislikes: (Serious Sigil): Unrealistic Optimism, Too much yakking, People who kill the innocent (note: NOT killing, he’s fine with killing), People-who-try-to-help-but-actually-don’t-help, Slithering Animals

Sigil was late. Then again, when was he ever on time?

Since the first day he was born, Sigmund Michaels had taken his time. He hadn't learned to walk until he was two and hadn't learned--nor ever truly found the need to learn--to run until he was four. He tended to take detours on his walks, stopping to enjoy the scenery and smell the occasional leaf he found drifting in the air. On multiple occasions--too many to count, really--he had been scolded for this behavior but, Sigil never really minded. Once, he had been asked to deliver bread to his grandmother's house and return home by sunset. By the time he got there, the sun was already setting and Sigil ended up having to stay at his grandmother's.

Today, wasn't too different. The chocolate-haired boy flew through the sky, a white speck that could have been easily mistaken as a bird, doing somersaults through clouds and loops around hills. He wasn't exactly sure where he was going, the poster hadn't specified a 'where'. Either that, or Sigil had missed that line. In any case, it was too late to worry about that--he had accidentally dropped the poster in a cloud a few somersaults back. Sigil didn't mind. He'd find the place sooner or later. Can't be that hard to miss a campsite in the middle of the Secluded Woods, he thought as he let his electric blue eyes close and lost track of time. The feeling of the wind flowing through his hair was wonderful; Sigil could spend an eternity soaring off the ground.

Unfortunately, while Sigil could mentally spend an eternity doing that, physically he couldn't. His alteration spell for wings only lasted five minutes--after that, the wings would fade away. It had been five minutes.

"Aw man," the boy groaned as his wings flickered into nonexistence leaving him floating alone. "Not again!" He plummeted to the ground and grimaced, bracing himself for the impact. Fortunately, there was a tall tree to break his fall. Unfortunately, the tree still hurt. He hit a branch, "Ow!" Then, another. And another, and another, and another, until finally he crashed to the ground--head first. He made a groaned in pain and rolled onto his bottom.

In front of him, was a woman dressed in robes and a white haired man--they seemed to have just been in conversation. Behind them was a decently sized cabin. The one that had been described in the poster. Sigil had, accidentally, found his destination. "Ahahaha," he chuckled slightly nervously, looking at the woman who seemed to be the one in power. He scratched the back of his head, a typically movement when he was nervous. "Sorry, I'm late?"

Valina's face went red when he said they were married, and her mouth dropped open in a kind of comical fashion. What did he just say?! He then said he was kidding, which didn't really help her much, but before she could say anything back Cassandra came and gave them knives. Her thoughts about Aero's comment almost completely vanished as she looked at them. After a minute of confusion, trying to get her brain to catch back up to the present, she sheathed the blades as Cassandra showed them and just watched people talking.
Valina looked at Alexis, trying not to snicker as he first failed to speak. It was mean, but she wasn't really laughing to be mean. She just thought it was cute. Then, Arci did something and he was speaking English. She wasn't really that surprised that Arci could do that, but it was still impressive. She listened to the boy, learning his name was Alexis. But then she stopped paying attention and started to zone out.
She still hadn't finished her bread, and began to nibble on it again. Then, she nearly choked on it when someone fell in front of Alexis and Arci. Is there nothing normal around here, she thought, looking at the new person curiously.
Strange way to show up.

Arci raised an eyebrow at Sigil.
"And then there was two." She said.

Cassandra sniggered quietly at Arci's comment from across the campsite. She was getting her things ready. Then... She felt something strange. She perked her head up and looked around. She held her hand up so the others would be quiet. She gave the apprentices a death-glare. It seemed to say Make any kind of noise, any kind at all. I. Dare. You. Then she turned away and cocked her head. Quietly, she sneaked into the cabin, and brought out two Ranger's Cloaks. She handed one to Valina and one to Aero, when she came back out. "Now, listen. Follow me, and be quiet. I'll give you a few pointers, for one put on the cloak. tWo follow me, in a stealthy half-crouch stance." She gave them soft leather boots, the kind Ranger's used, it would make their footfall quieter. "Don't tense up and think too much about being quiet. Doing so will make you make more noise." Then she lead them away from the camp, sneaking quietly and stealthily. She seemed to flicker in and out of existence as her camoflauge cloak consealed her to even the most sharp eyes.

Arci raised a finger to her lips, just to make sure her apprentices would be quiet. She knew Cassandra's better judgement, and even if Arci had all of the magic and the title of Dovahkiin she aknowledged Cass as her higher.

Cassandra when she reached a bush, she hid in it. She expected her apprentices to follow, and when they arrived she wispered "Now listen someone's coming, who's not part of our group. When they come, don't tense up. That will cause a slight movement, and it's not you people notice it's the movement. Also, you'll feel a need to duck and hide. Whatever you do, don't move. Stay still. Want to know an old Ranger's saying that will save your lives on multiple occasions? 'Trust the cloak.' Make sure you take all this information it! It's part of your training, even if these people coming aren't planned."

To Sigil, it seemed as though he had fallen in at the wrong time. After receiving one woman's questioning expression followed by the others be-quiet-or-face-the-consequences glare, he wasn't exactly sure what to do. The chocolate haired boy observed with interest as he watched sneak into the cabin, return with some cloaks, hand the cloaks out to the green haired boy and the brown haired girl--who, judging by her sharper ears, seemed to be an elf--, whisper something to the two and skulk off--all done in nearly complete silence. Sigil was impressed; staying silent wasn't exactly one of his stronger points. Looking at the woman still present, he whispered, "What's going on?" Then, "Are we under attack?" Followed by, "Is this part of training?"

Arci threw her hands up in an exhasperated Really? gesture. "Shhh." She said just under her breath.

Cassandra watched as a group of three bandits in between the trees where they were. Two of them were carrying a third, who was injured. The man grumbled, "Ugh, I'm still sore from where I took that arrow to the knee. I hate Archers." Then, the girl said "Go to college they said, use your smarts they said" Cass brought out her longbow, aimed, and fired three arrows in rapid sucession. They each hit a different tree, yet they all hit their targets. The bandits turned their gazes to the opposite side of the forest from where Cass and her apprentices were. "What's that?" "Did you hear something?" They said. She jumped out, silently, and knocked two of them out with her strikers. The third fell with them.
"Ow! Son of a..." The bandit looked at her fearfully.
"Come here," She said to her apprentices.

Sigil pouted at the woman's gesture. And, quite frankly, he had also already gotten off to a bad start with the silver haired man next to her. He looked like he was ready to pounce the boy at any moment. Sigil wasn't even sure what was going on...

How could I NOT ask questions? For a moment--a really long, reeeeeaaaally boring moment--, everything was silent. The boy was about to let out a sigh when a noise cause his ears to perk. He heard voices, older voices.

"Ugh, I'm still sore from where I took that arrow to the knee. I hate Archers."
"Go to college they said, use your smarts they said."

Sigil felt his left hand instinctively reach for his wrist band--which was actually his Guan Dao in its altered form. Then, he heard the whistling of arrows, followed by three thunks farther off. The tones of the voices changed, slightly more confused this time.

"What's that?"
"Did you hear something?"

Then, the voices disappeared. What's going on here? Sigil gave the woman beside him a questioning look with his electric blue eyes.

Aero laughed hysterically when the boy crashed into the ground. After a few minutes of coughing, he finally managed to bring himself to offer the boy a hand. Suddenly, Cassandra raised up a hand to signal absolute silence. Her death-glare reenforced this command, and Aero shut up for good. He saw Cassandra creep into the cabin, not making even a single sound. She came back with cloaks and boots.
"Now, listen. Follow me, and be quiet. I'll give you a few pointers, for one put on the cloak. Two follow me, in a stealthy half-crouch stance. Don't tense up and think too much about being quiet. Doing so will make you make more noise." She said. Aero followed her, as with the others, away from the camp. He had trouble following her since her cloak concealed her well at times whilst other times she allowed herself to be seen by the rest of the group. Aero was amazed at how easily the Ranger can blend into the enviroment, especially with the cloak. Even with the leaves in the way, Cassandra didn't make too much of a rustle. In fact, she practically didn't even make one.
"Now listen someone's coming, who's not part of our group. It's part of your training, even if these people coming aren't planned." Cassandra whispered to her apprentices. Aero sighed and tried his best to not go with the natural reactions that would make Aero blow the group's cover. Suddenly, there were voices.
"Ugh, I'm still sore from where I took that arrow to the knee. I hate Archers." A man's voice entered Aero's ears. Then, a girl said "Go to college they said, use your smarts they said." Aero had the reaction to snicker, but he must stay still, even if it means remaining calm during a statement as funny as this. Suddenly, Cassandra took her longbow and fired her arrows. Instead of hitting the bandits, they all hit the trees. Usually, Aero would protest, but he saw what she was doing. The bandits suddenly turned to the opposite direction, thinking there are archers there.
Then, Cassandra lept from the bushes and hit the bandits with some sort of weapon Aero couldn't identify. However, it was still able to knock out two of the three bandits. The one who took the arrow to the knee fell along with the two knocked out ones. Cassandra motioned for Aero and Valina to come, so Aero followed Valina to the Ranger, still awestruck from seeing what a Ranger could do, even if it wasn't at her best.

Cassandra Elyonill lead her apprentices back to the camp and sighed.
"Arci..." She nodded. "It's about the caves."

Arci shook her head and turned to look at her apprentices.
"Okay. First off, tell me, what magic do you specialize in and what spells do you know? I'll tell you the five types of magic. Alteration, one of the five schools of magic, affects the world around it by altering the laws of reality and manipulating it to one's own accord. The School of Alteration involves the manipulation of the physical world and its natural properties. This skill makes it easier to cast spells like Waterbreathing, magical protection, and Paralysis. Conjuration is the school dedicated to summoning creatures or objects the caster desires. The School of Conjuration governs raising the dead or summoning creations from Oa different world. This skill makes it easier to cast these spells as well as Soul Traps, bindings, and more. Destruction magic provides many means of inflicting damage on enemies. Destruction spells use elements like fire, frost, electricity, water, light, dark and more... To damage health; an enemy's menergy can also be reduced. The School of Destruction involves the harnessing the energies of the elements and other damaging attacks. Mostly, this is an offense type. Illusion magic focuses on changing the perception of the world from the viewpoint of the target. The School of Illusion involves manipulating the mind of the enemy. This skill makes it easier to cast spells like Fear, Calm, and Invisibility. Restoration magic focuses on spells that cure physical ailments. The School of Restoration involves control over life forces. This skill makes it easier to cast spells like Healing, Turn Undead, and magical Wards."

Sigil had heard each of the terms before. Unfortunately, the last boy who had mentioned the words--an older boy who had heard rumors from his cousin--had gotten a mouthful of soap shoved down his throat for his utterance and Sigil hadn't dared to ask more. Hearing the words now, made Sigil just as giddy as they had five years ago, when he had first heard them.

"I can change the direction and force of kinetic energy, but I have to have some form of physical contact with it for it to work, and the more solid the contact the more effective I am." The silvery haired man spoke.

Sigil arced his brows. The boy wasn't quite sure what kind of magic that was classified as. It could probably be characterized as some sort of Destruction magic--nearly everything could be classified as that type of magic. Sigil himself was only capable of a limited two spells, one summoned the wings which allowed him to fly and the other allowed him to manipulate sunlight as a deadly weapon. He grinned as he spoke up, "I believe that I've touched base with Alteration and Destruction Magic. I can create glowing white wings to fly and use pure sunlight in a variety of ways." He turned to the woman. "I came here in hopes that I would be able to learn about new forms of magic and new spells! Seems like I've already learned something today."

Cassandra Elyonill had also only half-listened. She was busy thinking of a few things, like for example, an answer to Aero's question.
"Well... You see, we haven't explored the caves much." She looked at her Apprentices, as a slight grin was hidden in the shadow of her hood. "Yet."

Arci nodded.
"That's right, we were planning on taking you guys down there." She said. "All of you." But then she looked weary. "I was hoping I'd get to teach my apprentices more."

Cass nodded, also.
"So was I, but it seems we may be in a tight spot. The three bandits said around 500 were coming."

Arci had a puzzled look.
"Wait, wait, wait... What?"

Cass recounted what had happened earlier with her, her apprentices, and the bandits. Of course, she left out most of the details and it was a very rough outline. Rangers didn't enjoy sharing secrets, and rarely told anyone of their smallest missions.

Sigil wasn't exactly sure what was going on but, five-hundred bandits didn't sound too good. Three bandits might have been good practice but five-hundred was an entirely different story. Quite frankly, Sigil was worried. Two women, albeit, trained women and four novices against five-hundred bandits? That was usually something that was called "bad-odds" where Sigil had come from. The boy glanced at the Ranger woman. She didn't seemed too worried. Guess it comes with the job, Sigil shrugged.

On the other hand, this would probably provide an excellent chance for both the mages and the Rangers to practice their respective skills.

"So," the green haired boy asked, "We are going to the caves to do what exactly?"

That was a fairly good question. Sigil looked at the two women inquisitively. "Yes, what is the plan?" Immediately, a bunch of ideas popped up in the boy's head. "Are we going to find a way to kick the bandits' behinds?"

Sigil looked up to the sky as he generally did when he was thinking. Seven hundred enemies wasn't a wonderful prospect--the chances of victory were near nothing if not completely nothing. There were two choices in facing such odds: One, stay far away from the adversaries and out of dangers way completely; two, outsmart the enemy and wipe them out purely by wit. Sigil wasn't usually one to run.

"Perhaps we don't have to face the bandits and vampires head on. Caves are extremely hazardous to large groups of travelers--a single earthquake could bring the whole structure down on them." The brown haired boy flashed his brilliant white teeth. "Perhaps we could use that to our advantage!"

Valina was staring at the forest around them, half listening to what the others were saying. She didn't really want to face a bunch of vampires. Bandits, sure, bring it on. Vampires? Not only could you die but you could turn into one. Valina wasn't sure which one she thought was worse.
She briefly glanced at Sigil, who seemed overly excited to fight. She couldn't help but smile a little at the enthusiasm. It was almost enough for her to want to join his in taking on the huge threat head on. Almost.
"I don't think Cassandra or Arci want their caves to be destroyed... right?" she asked the last part while looking over at Cassandra.

Cassandra Elyonill was deep in thought for a few seconds by the time she processed what Aero had said.
"I seriously... Seriously don't like those odds...." She nodded towards him thoughtfully. "Either you aren't a fool, or you have the mind of a Ranger." She paused. "I'm hoping both, Aero." She had been listening to Silgil's answer also.
"That could work. But Valina's right. I don't want those caves destroyed. But..." She stopped. A plan had started formulating in her head, and she wasn't sure of it so far. Just bits an peices coming to her. She looke at Sigil again.
"Find Alexis and tell Arci she needs to teach you two warding spells and destruction, preferably fire, spells after dinner." She looked at her two Apprentices. "You two. There's a lot to be taught to you but not yet. I have a few chores for you two. You both can start by tidying up the table and setting it out, then afterwards cleaning the house."
She wasn't going to tell the apprentices this, but the reason for their chores, and they'd have a lot of them, was because they needed to learn patience. Not only that, but they needed a Ranger's infinite patience. The Mage's Apprentices, however, wouldn't need that amount of patience. Mages and Sorcerers usually are better with less patience, as magic just requires that mind set. Most, anyway.

Sigil's grin wavered a bit at Valina's comment. She was right. Caves were meant for exploring--not exploding. The Sigil that had utterly loved nature purely because of its beauty would have thought of that immediately; at times like these, Sigil felt that he was losing himself to the magic. Magic was like water, in a way. It was always trying to collect itself, wanting to join with more magic, leading the users to seek more and more knowledge... It had driven many Mages insane.

The boy's smile faded as he thought. He didn't want to lose himself.

"Find Alexis and tell Arci: she needs to teach you two warding spells and destruction--preferably fire--spells, after dinner." The woman, who Sigil now knew was called Cassandra, ordered.

Sigil's smile quickly returned. "Alright! The first part won't be to hard!" He was pretty sure Alexis--who he didn't think was too fond of his hyperactivity--was still with the group of apprentices. "Hey Alexis, let's go find Master Arci." And with that, Sigil ran off.

Now, where had Master Arci gone? The brown haired boy had to think for a moment. Oh, that's right--she had gone to make some chow! Sigil took a deep breath and followed the smell of food and, even though it was very light, his extra sensitive sense of smell led him off in the direction of the Master Mage. "Master Arci, Master Cassandra told me to tell you that you should teach us two destruction spells--preferably fire--and a... a barding spell!"

Alexis rolled his eyes at Cassandra's not noticing him. He knew he was quiet, but people generally did not forget the big, armored knight standing a few feet away. He grunted at Sigil, and followed the boy. His steps were slow, but his stride was long, so he easily kept up with the boy's excited movement. When they found Arci, he stayed at the door, quietly while Sigil ran in and spoke excitedly. "Master Arci, Master Cassandra told me to tell you that you should teach us two destruction spells--preferably fire--and a... a barding spell!"

He sighed slightly annoyed. "I think he means that Ms. Cassandra said that we needed to learn two warding spells, and destruction spells. she said that the destruction spells should be fire based." he leaned against the door frame, supporting his armor's weight, giving his body a quick rest. "And I am sorry, but is there somewhere I can put my armor?" He asked. "If I don't need to wear it, then I would rather not."

Arci put down the giant bowl she was holding. Inside it was pasta noodles, uncooked. She nodded at Alexis.
"Right. It makes sense, the Warding spells are spells that can block magical attacks, ward off some evils and undead, and even sometimes block other attacks. Fire spells? Well..." She shook her head. "It's dangerous, but also makes sense. Those vampires are extremely weak to fire."

Sigil shrugged at Alexis' retort. 'Barding'. 'Warding'. Just a one letter difference. Immediately, he retracted the thought--he'd recently realized that a single letter could keep you alive or kill you.

"Fire spells? Well..." She shook her head. "It's dangerous, but also makes sense. Those vampires are extremely weak to fire."

The new information brought a toothy grin to his face. "So, we will be fighting the vampires after all?"

Alexis considered the question, he never thought of magic as being different types, merely different ways of it being used. but he was sure that she knew far more about it than he. "I had partners who were all given a different ability through the use of magic. One could control the frequency and volume of sound, another could change things into different elements, you get the idea. I was given these hammers by the priests. They taught me to use them in conjunction with my magic." He decided to take his armor off as he spoke, and set the plate steel on the ground in an orderly pile. He did not offer his hammers to Arci as Sigil had done, they meant far too much to him to allow anyone else to touch.
