Don't give me that look!

0 · 3,033 views · located in Secluded Woods

a character in “As an apprentice...”, originally authored by Izzyvamp, as played by RolePlayGateway

Description

Name: Vilina Rivers
"Little butterfly... Kill the butterfly!"
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Craft: Hidden and Unseen Movement
Theme Song 1: Lessons in Love
Skills: Can move around while staying completely silent. As of now it okay with a bow.
Archery- She is okay with a bow, and has a fair amount of experience. With a target, instead of hitting center every time it's more likely she'll hit on the edge. She has lots of room for improvement.
Hidden and Unseen Movement- Growing up as a homeless kid, she stole a lot of her dinners. After time, she became really good at not being found. So, she has experience.
Saxe and Throwing Knife Skills: No experience, probably can't even hold the knife right.
Speed: She has fairly good speed, but nothing to brag about. Little experience from running from angry people (mostly merchants).
Climbing: Little skill. She can climb some things, but only if it's really easy and not for a long time.
Intelligence: Has street smarts, but as for book smarts, she's not very intelligent. Still, she can make decent plans in her head.
Oakleaf color:bronze
Homeland: Summerset Isle?
Description: Vilina is an elf, and has a lean figure. Her hair is brown, long and flowing. She usually wears it down, but sometimes puts it up in a braid. Her eyes are a dulled blue and her ears are pointed, obviously. She has fair features and an innocent expression that used to be able to trick any merchant into giving her something. Or giving her an opportunity to steal it. Her eyes often hold mischief, as is matches her personality.

Theme song 2:What You Know

Personality

Personality: Vilinna is attracted to mischief. She loves to watch it and cause it. She's a bit of a rebel at times, but mostly when she needs to be. She has a nice, calm personality when she's in a happy mood, but when in a bad mood she'll bite your head off for looking at her weirdly. Her favorite thing to do is either pranking, or sleeping.
Horse: N/A
Relationships: N/A (She's been alone her life)
History: Her parents died, sick, when she was around five. Ever since, she's been alone. She had to leave her house, because people were starting to get suspicious of the girl who was never seen with her parents. She ran away, moving from town to town. When she turned 16, she began to do little jobs in the towns she came to, but when she was little she was just a thief and a beggar. When she finally did start doing normal jobs, she found she wasn't good at them, and really only knew the life of a thief. She didn't want to be a thief, so she searched for something else to do. After awhile, she believed to had found it.
Likes:
-water
-cheese
-reading
-animals
Dislikes:
-the dark
-bugs
-"guards"(anyone who will arrest her)
-mean people
Other: Will add if seen fit.

Equipment

Equipment:
Cloak- Rangers are never found without their mysterious ranger cloak. The trick of the cloak is the special woven pattern of forestal colors, similar to that of camouflage, but more complex. The cloak is the main thing that
marks a person as a ranger.
Image
Armor-She wears light leather armor under her cloak, it isn't much though it can provide plenty protection for his/her needs.
Image
Ranger's Apprentice Recurve Bow-
Image
Double Knife Scabbard- The double knife scabbard is attached to a ranger's belt, with slots for the saxe knife and the throwing knife. It is issued only to rangers, and cannot be obtained by anyone else.
Saxe Knife- The saxe knife is a long knife rangers discovered from the Skandian sea raiders. It is very sharp and made of extremely strong metal, being able to bend and break a sword and not even leave a scratch on the
knife's blade. It is also balanced for throwing.
Image
Throwing Knife- The throwing knife is smaller knife, designed for being thrown. Extra width at the top allows for balance with the hilt, which helps drive it home in the ranger's target.
Image
Ranger Strikers- A newer ranger weapon which is a brass tube fitted to the ranger's hand with a brass ball on both sides used to strike an enemy, mainly good for stunning or blunt damage. At the middle is a brass tube,
long enough to fit in the wearer's hand, and on either side is a lead-weighted brass knob, used to strike at an enemy, or used to throw at an enemy, stunning him from up to 6 meters away (in the hands of an expert user). The
average ranger carries two, and they can be screwed together to make a club. This extends their stunning range to 20 meters. They are, essentially, fistloads.
Clothing: If she's not wearing her Rangers cloak and armor, she wears a lot of earthy colors.
Image
Image
Arrows:
General Purpose Arrows- This arrow is the standard issue arrow of the Rangers and the Temujai because of its ability to pierce armor. Its tip is very pointed. Because of this arrow's lack of sides that secure the arrow in
the flesh and cause more damage if the victim attempts to dislodge the projectile, the arrow can be removed, sanitized, and reused, although the Rangers, who rely on swift, quick and killing shots to the head or vital organs for
a fleeting end, consider this idea distasteful.

So begins...

Valina trudged through the woods, feeling miserable and hungry. Her lip was split and bleeding, there was a dagger would on her shoulder that she had tended to but still hurt, and she probably had a dozen other bruises. How had she not noticed all the merchants staring at her so closely, how had she not noticed them smiling secretively as she drew close. She winced as she continued to walk, remembering what had happened a few hours ago.
"Look what we got here, it's the little thief," the man who sold trinkets said, holding Valina by her hair. She tried to swat his hands away but froze in fear as she felt cool metal press against her throat. "What are you waitin' for Smith, kill the rat!" a female merchant shouted, a very disgusted look on her face. "I've noticed my fruit disappearing, I know it was her!" she woman continued, voice rising. Thing was, Valina had just arrived in this town, and she would have remembered stealing from them. She hadn't. While it was true she stole from people and begged on the streets to live, she never took what would be missed. An apple that had turned brown, some meat that was close to being 'not so fresh'. She growled at the merchants surrounding her. Some more had joined the slowly forming circle of people who wanted to watch. Why would they think she had stolen from them? Then she saw it. If she had blinked, she would have missed it, but there was another girl, not an elf mind you, but a girl. She looked Valina's age, and Valina could tell she was poor. But she wore an evil grin. The man holding her had become frustrated with the fruit seller, and was distracted enough for Valina to push his arm away as she glared at the other girls retreating back. Though she had pulled away, the man reacted quickly and stuck the dull blade into her shoulder. Valina hissed in pain, staggering. Then, the fruit woman punched her, causing Valina to fall onto the stone ground. The people around her threw a few things at her, and through the pain she was in, Valina managed to get up and run off. They chased her. Finally, she found a place to climb up the city's wall. Once on top, she saw it was a hill that went down outside. Though she tried to go carefully, she ended up tripping and rolling down the hill anyway.
Valina groaned at the memory. Why am I so stupid? she thought bitterly. She wasn't even strong enough to defend herself. The one time she's ever caught, after all these years, it was for something she didn't do! She was still in pain, but this memory outraged her and she let out a frustrated yell and she picked up her pace. She had to get to the next town, she was starving. But instead of a town, she stumbled into what looked like some camp, where people seemed to be gathering.

Cassandra Elyonill nodded to Aero.
"Yes, I am a Ranger. Question is, are you willing to be my apprentice?" Ma'am? She thought. I'm starting to like this kid already. She thought again.
She gestured towards
Aero, Michael, and Valina to join her and Alexis.
"Now then, you've all seen the fliers. My first question to all of you would be, is the tongue I'm speaking in your native tongue, or atleast a tongue you're familiar with?" She asked all of the soon-to-be apprentices.

Valina stared at the woman in front of her. She was expecting them? Valina supposed it made sense, but it was kind of weird to her since she had not purposefully ran to the camp. Sure, when she saw the flier she wanted to go, but it had no location. This was that place. "Odd," she mumbled under her breath before taking hesitant steps toward the woman and the person she'd been talking to. Apparently, she wasn't the only one to just arrive. Awkwardly, Valina shifted her weight from one foot to the other before replying to Ranger.
"It's not my native tongue, but I have been speaking it for years," Valina said with a small smile. Was this really happening? That's luck for you,she thought.

Cassandra Elyonill chuckled.
"That answers that question. Very well, we'll sort that out for you later.
Arci knows many languages and may be able to translate. I, however, only know this tongue, Dovah and Latin." She looked at all of them. I'm guessing you, you and you," She pointed at Valina, Michael and Aero, "Are with me. You, however, look like you may be Arci's knew apprentice." She looked at Alexis. "Magic?" She said to him and nodded thoughtfully.
"I'll go wake her up. You three can wait around here, explore the camp or whatever. I have nothing to hide from you." And with that, she walked to
Arci's cabin to go wake her up.

Valina looked at the guy who had been with Cassandra, and tried to hide a smile. He really didn't know their language that well. It made her want to giggle and help him at the same time. Instead, she just pretended he wasn't there. When Cassandra walked off, Valina looked at the other person who was supposed to be with her. Then, she just stared. His hairs green, she thought dumbly, still staring at him. Normally people get embarrassed about staring or being stared at, but she didn't care for either. She learned to not care what people thought about her. But why is his hair green, is that natural? She had heard of people changing the colors of their hair with herbs, but it looked natural. Maybe it was normal, and she had just not met enough people yet. It was a likely option. She continued to think about this, a thoughtful expression on her face as her eyes darted from his hair to his eyes. They nearly match, she thought, and had to stop herself from smiling at that thought. Instead, she turned away and sat on the ground.

Aero looked around as soon as Cassandra was gone. Maybe he could play a prank on someone? Then, he got the feeling someone was examining him. Aero turned around to see an elf looking at him. "What?" Aero asked. "Do you want something?" And there was that signature smile again.

Valina looked back at the green haired guy as he asked if she wanted something. After a moment, she just shrugged. "I like your hair," she commented, before turning back around and closing her eyes. She was a little tired, since she had half ran here bloodied and bruised. Honestly, she was glad no one seemed to notice or at least mention her split lip of the blood on her shirt. Maybe they'd leave it alone.
Valina gingerly touched her shoulder. It was feeling a little better, but still felt like, well, someone stuck her with a knife. She was probably lucky the guy was an idiot and didn't actually hurt her that bad. Just a lil' knife wound, she thought, opening her eyes again.

"I like your hair." The elf said before turning around.
"Okay..." Aero responded awkwardly. He looked at the table and examined the bow and arrow without touching it. The bow was a longbow, and a true work of art compared to other people's craftmanship. Aero wondered if he can just pick it up and use it on the target, but he restrained himself, for once. "I'm not going to get myself thrown out before the lessons even started." Aero muttered, and went to look around. There were a couple of cabins to sleep in, a stable, the picnic table Aero just went from, a blacksmith, and a cave.

Aero sighed. He was bored, but the usual "fun things" to do included pranking someone in some way. But, as he said before, Aero wasn't going to be kicked out before he had learned anything... yet. He looked at the elf again, and decided to converse with her. He walked to her quickly, and Aero greeted her with an unusually (at least, for him) polite tone. "Well, hello there." Aero greeted.

Valina had been looking around and decided it was a pretty good camp. Even if it had looked more run down, she wouldn't have minded. She was just glad she ended up here in the first place. Valina had continued to rub her shoulder, as if that would make it feel better.
Valina jumped slightly, hearing someone speak. She looked up at the green haired boy, mild interest in her eyes. She wasn't really expecting him to talk to her after his response to her comment. She figured he thought she was weird. Not that she wasn't .
"Hello," she said using the same tone he did. Though, she had a grin on her face. "Do you want something?" she asked, repeating his own question from earlier. She hadn't stopped rubbing her shoulder, but now she wasn't focusing on the pain. No way did she want anyone here to see what she had gotten herself into.

Aero shrugged. "I just wanted to talk. After all, according to that woman, we are going to be apprentices... We might as well get to know each other." Then Aero added "Well, that, and the fact that I'm bored. I usually play pranks and all, but I don't want her foot up my ass before I did anything here." Aero smiled. "So, what's your name? Mine's Aero. Oh, and I nothing is wrong with my hair, if you are wondering. I just had it ever since I remember. I asked my... parents and they responded with 'We dyed your hair when that first strand of hair came up, dear.'" Aero leaned in and whispered. "In all honesty, that is all comp, ete bullshit."

(Sorry. I accidentally tagged Alexis.)

Cassandra Elyonill walked outside the cabin, Arci following.
"Alright everyone. I figured I'd give you all the day off until the other two apprentices arrived. But that doesn't mean you're free to go. I think the first thing we should all do, if you haven't started already, is get to know each other." She smiled.

Arci shook her head.
"You'll have to forgive her for now, she's acting a bit like a drill seargent, huh? That's because she's never had any apprentices."

Cassandra Elyonill nodded.
"I'm sorry. I guess I should loosen up. With most people, Rangers way more in peticular, it's hard having apprentices. But, when we get apprentices, the relationship becomes more than Master-Apprentice. It's more like Mother-Daughter or Mother-Son." She sighed. "I'm Cassandra, Cassandra Elyonill. You can call me Cass or Cassie."

Arci laughed.
"And I'm Arci. Nix Arci, call me Arci though." And then she added, "And if any of you are up for some adventure just tell us. We've both been a bit stir-crazy lately. Also-" She never finished the sentence. Instead, she noticed the blood on
Valina.
"Oh, dear! Are you okay? Do you need help? I have a few potions back in my cabin, they're sure to heal you up in hours."

Valina jumped slightly at the woman named Arci's comment. "Oh, it's nothing really. Just got into some... um, trouble, before I got here," she said uneasily. She hadn't thought someone would have reacted that way. Maybe asking what happened, but people never showed much interest in her well being. "I got blamed for something. They didn't take it well," she added, shrugging with 'What can you do?' expression. "You really don't have to bother... I usually heal fast."

Cassandra Elyonill grinned secretly, behind the shadows of her cowl. It was common for Rangers to get in trouble bth before being a Ranger, and after. Just they tended to be differently. If you were a Ranger, it wasn't allowed for you to be a theif. You could be a troublemaker, like playing pranks, but nothing too bad. Of course, a Ranger's never had to punish their apprentices for such reasons because if you were chosen to be one that means you have the common sense to listen to the Ranger.

Arci nodded thoughtfully.
"Are you sure? I am the teacher of the Mages here, after all."

Cassandra Elyonill turned to face her.
"Now, now, Arci. Don't be trying to steal away my apprentices with your temptation of magic."

Arci laughed.
"Don't be silly! I'd rather be a Ranger than a mage any day!"

The girl introduced herself as Valina, and she asked Aero "Why are you here?"

"I got here because of-" Aero was interuppted by the Ranger coming up with another woman. They introduced themselves as Cassandra (The Ranger) and Arci (The Other Woman). Acri then was shocked to see blood on Valina's shirt. Valina shrugged and explained with "I got blamed for something. They didn't take it well. You don't have to bother, really. I usually feel fast."

Huh... Another fact to keep in mind. Elves heal fast... Aero smiled. "I feel you're pain. Happens to me a lot." Aero chuckled. "So... Um, do you mind if I introduce myself now so I don't have to do it later?" He added.

Valina smiled at the boy tapping his finger, who seemed to be trying to keep up with what happened. When he saw her and didn't look away, Valina took that moment to try and decide what kind of guy he was. Couldn't really ask him, as it was. He had white hair and greyish eyes, making Valina laugh a bit inside. Do all guy's eyes match their hair? she thought.
After a moment of still staring, she decided it probably wouldn't be too much a problem he couldn't communicate that well, since he seemed like the quiet type anyways. Still, he looked kinda like an outcast, standing over there while the rest were talking (somewhat).
Her smile turning into a grin, she waved her hand, motioning him to come over. She then looked back at the Ranger and the Mage, letting him decide if he would come over or not.

Cassandra Elyonill waved his hand aside.
"No need, Aero. We're a family now, this is more than just a job." She looked to each of her apprentices. "Now, normally apprentices start off doing chores. I know, I know. Aww! Chores? I thought this was going to be fun. But you two need to learn patientce at a Ranger's level. And the fun will come. We'll be going into the cave sometime this week, after I give you basic knife training. You're going to need it down there." And with that, she walked off to retrieve some items.

"Alright." Aero responded. He turned around and sighed. Chores? I thought I was- ... Patience Aero... You need patience she said. After all, she's the full-fledged Ranger here, not me... Aero mentally sighed again. He looked around to look at the camp one more time. It's all secluded from society... Is this what a Ranger is like? The ones to be isolated from everyone else? Oh boy... That'll be a problem for me... Aero facepalmed himself.

He went back to the elf again. "Hey." Aero put up a smile, despite the disheartening news. Disheartening to him, at least.

Valina didn't really mind chores. Living on the streets, she had to do things for herself, so working hard came natural to her. If not from fending for herself, then from all the jobs she took traveling. She did notice Aero sigh at the mention of it though.
He came back over to her and greeted her. She nodded at him in acknowledgment, thinking about the cave mentioned. She then looked at Aero and grinned. "So, you don't like chores much?" she asked, though she figured she already knew the answer from his reaction to Cassandra's 'speech'.

"Nah... I'd rather walk around and prank people." Aero replied. "However, I can't right now. I don't want to be kicked out." He looked around a bit, then sighed. "My own village was burned down by a bunch of bandits. Before that, I was the village 'Bastard.' I played pranks, joked a lot, did the occasional theft. However, my life changed when the bandits came. I missed what I lost. However, I moved on. I was told to 'Do something with that pitiful life of mine' and stuff. I asked around and someone by the name of Will told me to seek out a Ranger. Now I know what a 'Ranger' is." He explained everything. He had been holding it down for so long, Aero had dropped it all on one go on a random stranger who he is supposed to work with.

"Uh... Ooops...." Aero chuckled. "I guess I dropped it all on you by accident... Sorry, Valina." Aero apologized.

Valina was listening to him tell his story, and was slightly surprised by him apologizing. "I don't mind at all. I'm sorry about your village..." she said, trailing off. She didn't really know what to tell him. Her own thoughts were staring to be side tracked by memories, but she quickly stopped them. She didn't want to think about that right now. "Kind of figures you were, or I should say are, a prankster. Explains the hair," she said, grinning. No way was she letting the green hair thing go. It did look cool, but come on, who naturally has green hair? Apparently Aero.
"Your village... were your parents there?" Valina couldn't help but ask. She really wanted to know, though she wasn't sure why she did. It didn't change anything and she knew that. The words left her mouth anyways though.
