Ashes and Dust

Ashes and Dust

0 INK

We're monsters. We were created by science, and like our mythical counterparts, destined to be slain...but we're not planning to go quietly. (Bleak DNA and superpower-based RP with a mythological twist.)

732 readers have visited Ashes and Dust since VitaminHeart created it.

Introduction

Dear Reader,

I'm writing this not as some accusation or attempt to push the blame onto you. Through all this I can say I've never grown to hate humanity. You confuse me a lot of the time...but I still have to hope you're not an evil species. I do, after all share nearly all of my genes with your kind.

No, this is not a message of contempt, but rather an attempt to tell our story, while I still can. You see while some of our number still hold up the hope that we can escape our fate, and while I don't want to step on their fragile dreams...as a realist I cannot see that we are likely to survive much longer. They've already killed a good number of us, the ones that weren't claimed long ago by sickness and defects.

We are not so different from you, reader...but at the same we are worlds away. You see, we were created, not born. Most of us don't remember much about our early years. Those of us that do don't speak of it. I would rather not go into any detail but I will say our creators were not very much concerned with the quality of life their creations had...so long as they had life.

We were designated Monsters. That was our classification, modelled as we were on creatures of ancient greek mythology. Of course we knew nothing of that at the time. We are twisted mockeries of living things, most of us...but our abominatory forms give us skills to survive...and soon came the day when we were to need them...when they introduced us Monsters to the Olympians.

Raised in isolation, we had always assumed that we were the only products of the experimentation, but the truth was far more sinister.

We were not the projects.

We were the training aids.

The olympians were the real results of the effort at the facility. Each named after one of the deities of greek myths, they resembled humans..but with powers that far outdid anything a human could do...and anything that we could do.

We were given a simple brief. We were to be released into the world. Six hours later, the Olympians would be dispatched on their training exercise, their orders being fairly simple..locate and kill us Monsters.

The Olympians themselves were far better trained and disciplined, educated to follow orders without question, and true to their word, they came after us at full force.

It has now been about a month since we were released. With Argus' death yesterday it brings us down to only six...and they're closing in on us with each passing day. As it stands I doubt it will be more that a week until the Olympians, the world's most unstoppable soldiers, complete their mission. Us monsters will be nothing but ashes and dust, just forgotten stepping stones on the road to military glory...but we don't intend to just lie down and wait for death to come knocking.

If there is any way that we can escape, or fight these beings...however tiny the chances of success are, we are going to take it.

Kinds Regards,

Medusa.

Ashes and Dust is a DNA-type RP with a Greek Mythological twist, set in the not too distant future and following the chase between The Monsters and The Olympians. While the plot was written in first-person...it is in fact written in third-person, just to clarify.

Monsters

These will mostly be humanoid versions of the monsters of myth, think something that could conceivably disguise itself in a city without causing a major incident with police and screaming citizens.

This list is a draft, so if you have a monster you'd really prefer instead, please ask.

Medusa - Female (Taken.)

Chimera - Male (Open)

Harpy -Female (Reserved)

Cerberus - Male (Reserved)

Minotaur - Male (Open)

Sphinx - Female (Open)

Olympians
They resemble humans, though may have features that are slightly 'off'. They're effectively brainwashed into what they do. Aside from individual abilities they are incredibly strong, fast and resilient to damage, though have very little understanding of the real world.

Olympian Slots

Zeus- Male - Electrical manipulation (Open)

Hades-Male - Able to manipulate and control dead things for short periods. (Taken)

Hermes- Male - Incredibly fast and agile. (Open)

Artemis- Female -Can exert a sort of mind control on animals, using them as she pleases. (Open)

Nemesis-Female - Wings and the ability to fly. (Open)

Nyx- Female -Can shroud an area in complete darkness. Also able to see perfectly in the dark. (Open)

Medusa hesitated, turning her face towards the annoying flickering that was disrupting her writing. The battering powered lamp she'd been using was flickering out. While the cold light of a new morning was beginning to filter into their hiding place, the tinted panes of glass covering her eyes made it rather hard to see, even in normal light. She got to her feet, folding the letter up with a gloved hand and slipping it into her pocket before walking away from the flicker. They'd stopped off in an abandoned comic book shop in a small industrial town, a welcome shelter from the rain and a place to hide form those searching for them. It was a simple place, with no power of running water, but the structure was sturdy, and they had a few stolen sheets and sleeping bags....not that Meddie had been using them much. It was about six in the morning, but she hadn't gotten a wink of sleep.

She was worried, to be honest. Worried about the others more than anything. It was getting hard to travel unnoticed...and the continued travelling was taking its toll. Beyond the town was miles of woodland and hills, and food was going to be a lot harder to acquire...something that posed a challenge in itself. She'd been trying to figure everything out in her head...but it all just made her rather nervous.

The gorgon went through to one of the rooms that served as the kitchen, as it had a chipped wooden table and some plastic chairs. She dropped her form into one of the chairs and reached over for a bottle of soda that sat there. The responsible way to start the day of course....their diets had been far from model....but then considering there were no guarantees that they'd live to the end of the week, concerns about weight gain and tooth decay were the last things on their minds.

------

Elysium Facility, despite its name, was not the most pleasing of places. In fact on the outside one might have overlooked it entirely. It was situated some distance from any towns, on a windy hilltop devoid of trees, nothing by miles of long, grey-green grass against a steely sky. The complex itself was an assortment of blocky grey buildings, the walls made from thick, reinforced concrete. It was built like a fortress in order to prevent security breaches, a legitimate concern considering many of the experiments developed there could easily tear a door off a frame or force their way through a wall.

Inside was little better. There was an air of hospital about some of the interior. The walls were painted white and dispensers of anti-bacterial solution were hung in the corridors. On occasion a purposeful-looking man or woman might stride past with a clipboard or a tray of vials and needles. All of that seemed fairly normal, well until one would catch a glance of a trolley being moved along the corridors and see one of the twisted forms lying on them, sometimes hastily concealed with a white sheet.

Most of the creations of Elysium were never likely to leave. They were twisted failures with short lifespans, their bodies unable to support them. The staff regarded with with disdain and mild disgust. Nearly all the creations were seen with a sort of cold disinterest by most of the staff members...except the Olympians. They were scared of them. There was something profoundly unnerving about a being that could snap your neck as easy as look at you. Of course they were deemed to be entirely safe, but even so their presence left people on edge.

When not out on the training or engaged in other important exercises, the Olympians were housed on the top floor. They were generally given the freedom to wander the floor on the assumption that they would behave, though a strict schedule had to be adhered to at all times. At that point in the day, for one of them it was down as the time when she was expected to charge the VISOR, and this could not be deviated from.

Nemesis' room was dark most of the time, her mode of sight having little need for light. Layers of padding had been fastened onto protruding corners on the bed and furniture, a measure to avoid damage to the wings. The wings were, after all, Nemesis' greatest asset. The Olympian was perched on the edge of her bed in the gloom, a thick power cable trailing down from the side of her head to a socket in the wall.

During charging times, the Olympian was effectively blind, and tended to remain in her room...not that she was especially proactive most of the time. In general she drifted around, almost seeming to be daydreaming, until someone told her what to do. Of course, what she did do was enough to cement a bit of fear from those around her.

Today was another dispatch day, where they'd be sent out to go after the targets yet again. Nemesis knew the drill, and wasn't especially excited. She wasn't especially moved by the idea of killing..but she was quite prepared to of course. It all rather depended on the brief.

Minotaur was briefly watching the sunrise, trying to see what would happen in the world that he was unaware of. He had heard a somewhat abridged version of the news of Argus's body being found. Poor guy. Never stood a chance did he? especially from someone like Hades or Nemesis. Minotaur himself faced off with Zeus and barely escaped with Both hooves intact. He looked down at them and compared them to normal feet. Not much but it still worked.

'Ico' as he liked to be called then put his hood on, which caused his large bull horns to shrink into small stubs to hide his appearance, walked to the kitchen to find Medusa there. He sat down in a chair across from hers and he just silently scratched at the table. Just very silently scratching the table. The silence however pained him, usually Minotaur was more talkative but the others were sleeping and it was the 'leader' of the remnants of the 'monster' Experiments which were to be used as Olympian target practice. He didn't know what to do at the moment so he remained scratching the table. Just continued to do that as if nothing was ever the matter.

"How long's birdy-girl gonna take, anyway? If we're gonna do this briefing I'd rather do it soon." Hades sat in what was considered the lounge for the Olympians. Scattered across the room were chairs, sofas, as well as a collection of assorted items with which to occupy ones time. Comfortably reclined in one of the softer chairs, Hades sat cross-legged and relaxed, his usual smile upon his face. Standing not far off was a guard who had the misfortune of being landed with watching over top floor for the day. The somewhat stout guard looked visibly nervous as he replied "The briefing doesn't start for some time, sir Hades. Until it is time, you are not allowed to leave the premises." Hades turned his head in the mans direction "How many times are you gonna repeat the same thing? And here I was thinking you had to have some brains to work here." Picking up the glass of juice next to him, he drained it in one gulp before setting it back down. "Well if they don't hurry up, I'm taking off anyway. This place is becoming a bore." Reaching over to the chessboard in front of him, he picked up one of the pawns and began twirling it in his fingers. "It's not like we're ever told anything different, anyway. It's always "Today you are to find the remnants of the monsters. Hop to it." They make it seem like we don't know how to do our job." He let out a laugh as he crushed the pawn in his hand.

#, as written by Akantha
The cover of black feathers stirred, revealing patches of golden fur or smooth human skin. The quiet darkness surrounding the curled shape was stale yet restless in the gloom of morning. Sphinx, better known as Phin, opened her eyes to the gray light that filtered through her feathers to chill her warm body. Her unusual red gaze rested on the far wall with disinterest, and slight drowsiness. She moved to stretched slowly, gently, letting her wings unfurl from the position of the protective cocoon, having her front paws flex as her claws sink into the blanket beneath her, and her haunches rise to stretch out her back muscles. The ripple of pleasure raced over her spine as the warmth spilled over her pelt and her muscles moved for the first time after so much resting. She pushed herself off the ground to stand up on her back paws, easily balancing after so much practice at being human because to survive a monster had to be a human. Likewise, a human had to be a monster to survive in their world of politics and crime. Wasn't it simply ironic? Phin chuckled and raised a paw to comb out her long hair that was currently flowing over her chest and shoulders in waves of midnight black. Her wings folded in and pressed tight to her back so that her balance wouldn't be disturbed. After seemingly getting it into a presentable form she strode towards the living room snatching up a tank top to put on as she went. Rather than taking a couch or other sort of comfort she didn't mind sleeping on the floor. The fur covering her lower body up to right below her chest would be enough to keep her comfortable and warm. The undershirt slid over her body and covered her chest nicely even though the outline and shape wouldn't be unseen but it was good enough. They weren't like humans who would be concerned with that.

Phin stepped into a kitchen after some searching and spotted two of her companions. "Well aren't the cows and critters up early today?" She grinned. "Good morning." She didn't mean anything as a hurtful comment but it was simply how she expressed her pleasure to see them but whether or not they understood that was their own mentality. She stopped near the table and clawed the wood, furrowing it and sharpening her nails with delight. She looked up to the minotaur of the group with curiosity in her gaze as her claws paused. Ever since Argus's death things had gotten more sullen and tense as the danger settled in but she wouldn't let it effect her. The weak died first and she was determined to live but she wouldn't let the rest of her companions go as well. Not without a decent sort of fight. Her claws dug into the wood as anger seethed beneath the surface of her calm exterior before she surprised it and walked over to the cabinets. "What's for breakfast? I hope it isn't mice Medusa, I don't think bulls eat meat. Don't you think so?" She smiled warmly whilst her tail waved in luxurious rhythm with her emotions.

"I have no idea Phin." Ico said as he calmly tried to look for breakfast as well. "Might as well look around, maybe find out what this rundown place has. Also, I'm half human as well Phin which makes me just as much a meat eater as the rest of you." he added as he looked about the kitchen trying to find something. "That is, according to the standards I know."

He never gotten used to some of the comments, sure a Bull would be a vegetarian, but The Minotaur in Minos's labyrinth was famous for killing and devouring the sacrifices of Athenians. The one thing about Sphinx he had never been used to was how she was just as clever as she was beautiful. Her riddles always made him try and figure some of them out, only to be met with failure in the long run. That never unnerved him however. It just made him more on his toes. He was looking around a whole lot for breakfast however that he lost his train of thought for a second.

"Darnit my hunger's overtaken my thoughts." He muttered.

Medusa rose to her feet wearily, disappearing out of the kitchen and returning a few moments later carrying two boxes of cereal, slightly out of date. Enough that they'd ended up sitting in a dumpster behind a store ready to be scooped up.
She put then down on the table in front of the others.
"There..that's breakfast. We don't really have anything else considering the events yesterday." she stated, her voice strangely muffled by the mask fastened over her face.
"Need to work out a safer way to acquire food in the future."

----

Nemesis' VISOR snapped on with an electronic bleeping tone. A pixellated loading screen filled her vision for a few seconds before the world around her pulled into focus, colour draining into the objects around her. The image flickered for a moment, the stabilized.

The Olympian pulled the power cable free and slipped off the bed, wandering out into the common area where Hades was waiting. She turned to face him for a moment, possibly staring at him....it was somewhat difficult to tell, before clambering onto one of the chairs and crouching on it, wings hanging loosely either side of her form.
"....briefing is soon.." she mused after a moment.

Ico took a look at the Cereal boxes and picked one of them up. "Oh well a handful or two would keep me going for a while I suppose, since My stomach is not like yours anyway....." he mused as he poured a handful from it and started to eat it. He knew that they had to find a way to get food faster, he actually thought about if they reached the forest, set up a small nomadic styled camp and have people hunt for food as fast as possible so that way they can stock up on foods. The real question in his mind right now is will more have to die because of this hunted down bit before they even reach the woods. He hoped that he along with the others make it through alive.

They just had to.

Re: [OOC] Ashes and Dust

If the spot for a sphinx is still open I would love to have it! I think it might be fun!

Re: [OOC] Ashes and Dust

Hee, Sephi-lympians. Be afraid. Well you're welcome to either of those Firewind.

Well Vio-Lance to be honest I was considering a few mythologies, but I ended up with Greek because it was the one I was least likely to get totally wrong.

The harpy idea sounds pretty interesting...could cause a considerable amount of trouble for the monsters too, go ahead.

Hades accepted, I like him.

I might put one of my characters in as an Olympian, depending on whether we need them or not. I don't want to steal any roles that people might want of course, but I'll put one in if needed,
